Diner Reviews
  • "Nine-Ten is perfect for foodies, date nights, and even meeting friends after work. The wine menu is INCREDIBLE! and the service out of this world."

  • "Usually wonderful. This time the food was not as good as usual."

  • "The 3-course prix fixe is an easy tasteful lunch. Every plate has its delicate flavor infused by the chef. I like the salmon with a hint of orange fragrance, and the fish was wonderfully cooked. The spring salad and the main dish peas and asparagus was fresh and light. The bread butter was lemony and light, and the cheese dessert recommended by the waitress was good."

  • "We have eaten here several times and again the food did not disappoint. However, the service was absolutely awful! We sat on the patio and after 10 minutes, I finally had to ask the hostess if we even had a server. Everything he proceeded to do during our dinner was rushed, screwed up, and generally perplexing. We would have left him a very, very small tip. Unfortunately, because we were dining on Passport Unlimited, the 18% gratuity was added."

  • "Superb setting to watch the sunset (we sat on the patio), but it was the food, wine pairings, and expert but friendly service that made this meal truly memorable ($55 for 3 courses + $20 for wines: the most economical way to go). The scallops entree, Mexican white shrimp appetizer, and meringue with citrus sorbet were beautiful to look at and simply delicious, but everything else was outstanding too. Ate during the same week at much-heralded INK in Los Angeles and Pelican Grill in Newport Beach -- both very good and imaginative, but Nine Ten was far better in every way."

  • "We dined with another couple. The food, as usual was excellent, service was very good, and the Wednesday one-half price wine deal allowed us to drink a special wine at the winery price (Loring Rosella's Vineyard Pinot Noir). The nightly appetizer special (rabbit risotto) was superb: beautiful presentation, multiple tiered layers of flavors and textures. Also unlike many other top California restaurants, the servings are more than adequate. This is the first time we ate on the patio. Nice sunset view in March-April. Very casual and quiet."

  • "This was our 3rd time to Nine-Ten and each time was a fabulous all-around experience. The food is meticulously prepared, fresh, creatively presented and tasty! Service is always top-notch...attentive but not too much. We particularly appreciated Thiery this last time there."

  • "We had a wonderful meal and a great table. All was as close to perfect as it could be, except that they have reduced the size of their portions so my husband didn't get enough. I know when I can eat everything, that the portions are not very generous as I do not have a huge appetite."

  • "Took 7 people, included 3 kids between 3 and 7. Food was excellent, choices were varied enough that all kids found something they liked. Staff was welcoming to the kids. Waiter was very prompt and attentive. Granola was my favorite, but the French toast and Benedict dishes were excellent, and the omelet was savory. Drinks were the weak link: bar drink good, coffee terrible, as was the hot chocolate, neither had any flavor and neither were very hot. Definitely soured the experience, sadly, but really the rest was good."

  • "...particularly in freshness, organic sourcing, care of prep, and esp. the perfectly prepared and varied vegetables. I am not a vegetable person, but at NineTen, I coverted to a Believer."

  • "Arguably the best food in San Diego and comparable to some of the best we've had in France at considerably less cost. The one issue with Nine-Ten is the noise level if the weather doesn't permit you to sit outside on their heated back terrace. If you can dine outside, the noise level is moderate to quiet and the ambience would get another star. If you compare Nine-Ten to some other fine dining restaurants in San Diego, including George's Modern, Pamplemousse, Addison, etc. you are much better off at Nine-Ten. One other cautionary note is that their 3 course $55 prix fixe can be a good deal but you have to be careful because you get to pick essentially from the entire menu and the prix fixe can actually be more expensive than a la carte."

  • "We love the food and ambiance of Nine-Ten and have been there on several occasions. However on a recent visit this week the service was perfunctory. The waiter never checked back in and had to be signaled from the table, water glasses were not refilled and even though it was only 9:30 they started stripping and resetting tables noisily for breakfast. when we were trying to finish our conversation."

  • "I loved dining here! the service was excellent and the food was awesome. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and my mom ordered the pear salad which we both recommend highly."

  • "The hostess, Antoinette and the server, Chris were accommodating, very nice and added to the experience of having delicious food. The special on 2/21, prime rib eye was one of the best steaks I have ever had. The scallops that the other guest had were good, but not s great as the steak."

  • "The ambiance was fabulous. The service was top notch. Everything was professional and what you would expect from a quality restaurant. The food and drinks were fantastic. I had the short rib which was excellent. I also tried the salmon which was cooked beautifully. The pasta appetizer was delicious. The drinks were great as well. I'd highly recommend this place."

  • "We wanted to try this restaurant for a while and decided to go last Sunday. We had heard mostly good things, but every body had said, too expensive for what you get and they are right. The food was very good but everything else was average. I'm not a big eater and the portions were very small even for me. The prices of this restaurant are as expensive as Mr. A's but Mr. A's is above this and all other restaurants of this class in San Diego."

  • "Food was excellent, particularly the sashimi, scallops, duck, and dessert that was some sort of citrusy ice cream. Thierry, our server, also made the evening particularly enjoyable."

  • "We had an excellent meal at Nine-Ten. The food was fresh and flavorful. I have a perfectly prepared appetizer of Mexican shrimp and an entree of grilled Halibut that was cooked to perfection. The portions are not huge but they are full of flavor, texture and freshness. The waiter, a French gentleman was professional and efficient. He was friendly and extremely helpful when deciding on our menu selections."

  • "This place is very comfortable with some space between tables unlike so many restaurants these days which made conversation easy and private. The service was as good as you'll find in SD county. The menu offers a good variety without overwhelming you and the food preparation and presentation is executed to perfection. The wine list had good offerings at multiple price points. I'd rank Nine-Ten as a top five restaurant in SD county. Food highlights include the Hamachi, Jerk Pork belly, Baby Beet salad, the Savory Scallops, Short ribs and a host of other items not to mention a very impressive cheese plate selection. If you appreciate a great dining experience this place is not to missed."

  • "Been here many times at various times of the year with all sorts of different menu's. And it never disappoints. So glad it's recognized as one of the best restaurants in San Diego and continues to hold that position for so long."

  • "We got the 3 course prix fixe with wine which is a pretty good deal. Unlike many places there is no restriction on menu items. That being said, t thought the food was fine but not with the "wow" factor I had been expecting. Have had much better grilled octopus and nothing really stood out. The service was professional but seemed detached with no real interest in being helpful. It is a hotel restaurant but is very attractive with muted tones & soft contemporary furnishings."

  • "Four of us had Sunday brunch the other day and ate outside on the patio. Seating was comfortable with a nice view of the pool. Our waiter was cordial and presented us with a menu with many delicious selections. We chose a smoked salmon with bagel appetizer which was large enough for a meal, grilled salmon entrée, brioche French toast and a short rib pannini. All of the food was tasty, but the toasted bread short rib sandwich was not a pannini in any way and the French toast had only 2 pecans on the top. Portions were very skimpy except for the "appetizer" which was the largest menu item we purchased."

  • "This is a true unfound neighborhood gem! It's cozy, small, friendly and has amazing food and service. Our meal was exquisite and totally unique. The chef is from the Caribbean so there are some wonderful twists on many of the dishes. I had lamb medallions that were prepared perfectly and was full of all kinds of wonderful spices, we all had the butternut squash soup with pork belly pieces....amazing. My buddy had the short ribs and girls had salmon and tuna. Totally a wonderful experience. We'll be back again soon!"

  • "My wife and I dined on a recent trip to La Jolla, staying at the property. It was a nice spot. Unfortunately we planned our trip during restaurant week. While the food was good, I felt that the menu was restricted to stay within a certain price point. The appetizers and desserts were outstanding, which I have found to consistently be the case during restaurant weeks. I have a feeling I would have given Nine-Ten superior rankings if not for the compressed menu in honor of San Diego Restaurant Week. A definite go-to for anyone staying in La Jolla"

  • "We visited during restaurant week - That can sometimes be disappointing, but not in this case. We were seated out on the terrace which is quiet compared to inside. The great service was matched by the quality of the food. Pacing of the meal was well done and we will definitely return."

  • "We took our daughters to Nine-Ten for Restaurant Week because they had heard it was a great place. They weren't disappointed! The menu was terrific and offered a little bit of everything to suit everyone's palate. Highlights included the broccoli soup and pork belly appetizers. The surprising best entree was the tofu! My wife, an unapologetic carnivore, raved about it all evening. The desserts were slightly too sweet for me, but the 3 ladies all enjoyed them. Thiery was an amazing waiter. Always there when you needed him, and extremely helpful and kind to the girls. I appreciate a professional like him."

  • "Four of us had dinner at NineTen during San Diego Restaurant Week in January 2014. We ordered from the RW menu with wine pairings. Our server was superb - selected the wines for each course and gave us detailed descriptions of each selection. We ordered different things, but tried each others. Conclusions were that the best selections were the Jamaican pork belly appetizer, the braised short ribs entree and the half baked chocolate cake - all were amazing and decadent! We will definitely come back again."

  • "It would be easy to walk past the Nine ten and not realize that a delicious restaurant lives in a quaint old hotel. However, the Nine-ten is a charming, well priced restaurant. The decor is comfortable and welcoming, the seats encourage one to stay awhile. Interesting and varied menu. The lamb tacos were killer!! We did a birthday lunch there and the birthday chocolate dessert was divine."

  • "We have so many wonderful memories of La Jolla and Nine-Ten features prominently in all of them. We love the Mercy-of-the-Chef option. If you are celebrating a special occasion, your server will greet you with a card signed by all the staff. It's a nice touch."

  • "Have reviewed before...food is very good to excellent. It's very noisy if the weather doesn't permit eating in their porch area -- hence the ambience rating. Outside is very good. Service was basically ok but we had to pour wine ourselves once. Also, they have the bad American habit of not waiting until everyone is finished eating before removing dishes and trying to remove a wine glad containing a small amount of wine without asking."

  • "I have been living in La Jolla for 20 years and never thought to eat at Nine-Ten for breakfast. I would normally go to the regular hot spots but after eating there I will be back. The service was 6 stars and the food was 7 stars, the value 10 stars. Our waitress had no problem with any substitutions we made, and even went to check in the kitchen for my wife. I had the steak and mushroom omelet and substituted salmon for the steak, and it was one of the best omelets I have ever had. We will be back, many many times. Great job folks."

  • "Second time we have eaten here and have not been impressed either time. The food is good but not great. We sat on the patio so while quiet, you feel a bit abandoned out there. The heater ran out of fuel and that was never sorted out so it was cold. We did not like either dessert we ordered but the wine was good. With other great restaurants to choose from, this one just doesn't compel us to go back again."

  • "Went here with my wife on a Friday night to celebrate our anniversary (noted in our OpenTable reservation). The staff could not have been more wonderful. I don't want to list all of the extras they gave us because I'm not sure it happens every time, but we were impressed. We chose the "Mercy of the Chef" menu - five courses with wine pairings, so between the two of us we got to try a significant portion of their menu and all of it was incredible. We also sat on their outdoor patio in the back and it was quiet, romantic, and comfortably and evenly heated (this being something most restaurants have difficulty with). Indoors appeared to be more energetic. We've enjoyed most of San Diego's fine dining, and this was one of the best experiences."
