About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Lively
  • Hot spot
From the creators of Sweet Basil in Vail Colorado comes a fresh, innovative new restaurant opening December 2012. Aptly named Mountain Standard, this rustic and relaxed tavern aims to set a new standard in the Vail valley by using an ancient form of cooking.

The majority of Mountain Standard’s menu will be prepared via the most primal cooking method: over an open and live wood fire. The only restaurant in the valley to devote themselves to this age-old way of cooking, the food at this exciting new restaurant will have rustic, bold and honest flavors, focusing on the purest ingredients in the Rocky Mountain region and beyond.

Service, like the cuisine, will have that perfect balance of providing a first class dining experience with a more casual vibe. There is no smoke and mirrors here - no fuss - just simple, honest, from the heart service and cooking. The beauty of the creek side location is mirrored by the high energy vibe of this dynamic restaurant.

Good overall, but fell short of my expectations. I read great reviews prior to dining and don’t get me wrong, the food was good but it didn’t blow me away. The pimento cheese appetizer was excellent. We ordered the piri piri chicken and the tri tip for entrees, and while both were good, they weren’t excellent. The temperature of both was lukewarm, and was close to cold by the time we finished eating. The chicken was very flavorful and well cooked, but very heavy on the garlic. When we ordered the tri tip, our server said it comes out medium rare and I confirmed that was good. I don’t think what we got was medium rare, and was borderline well done. The fritter was very good, albeit cold. Drinks were good, and service was good although a bit slow. I know you’re paying a premium for everything in Vail, but the experience overall just didn’t seem to justify the price tag.

2nd time eating here. Service was ok but not attentive. The lamb gyro was not what was expected. We think of gyros as thin slices of meat while what we got was shaped like a sausage. And it was hotter (spicer) than expected. The biscuit with the ham and hot pepper jelly was just ok, but smaller than the $6 cost would justify. The clam chowder was the only part of the meal that was above average.

Our family of 9 had a wonderful experience at Mountain Standard. The service was timely and the wait staff was so attentive. The drinks were delicious. Our little ones loved the children’s meal selection. The Piri Piri chicken is outstanding. We had a fabulous time and would highly recommend!

I had the Copia and it was good but the rice gnocchi’s were not very good. Strange texture. Overall, the food was good, but what was disappointing was the massive up charge for a different tequila. We were surprised by $10 for a drink up charge. The waitress did not communicate that when she was asking which of these other tequilas we might want. $25 for a margarita is outrageous. They should at least communicate that up front.

Thank you for your honest feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed parts of your meal, but we’re sorry to hear about the concerns with the gnocchi and the drink charge. Clear communication is important, and we take this seriously. Your experience is being shared with our team so we can do better.

We had a resy for a table of 8 and they wouldn’t seat us until everyone arrived, even though the restaurant was 1/2 empty. The booth was hot and right by the kitchen, and when we mentioned it was hot the host smirked and said it’s not hot.. ok. The menu was very condensed from the last time we were there, so not a lot of options. The food we did order was good, just small portions for the price.. $26 sandwiches with no sides is crazy. The waiter was good and attentive. Our 1 GF guest got a Cuban sandwich and said the GF bread was delicious, which is hard to find. Overall it was okay.
