  • "We celebrated a birthday at Michael Smith with a group of 5. The waiter recommended and excellent pinot noir that went with everything we had ordered and was delicious. Various asparagus appetizers (soup, salad) were all wonderful. I loved my duck and my husband thought his rabbit appetizer was the best dish he'd had anywhere in weeks. The restaurant was full, but we could all hear each other very well, and we were talking a lot. It's just an excellent restaurant for special occasions especially, but that has included lunch or dinner when we happen to be in Kansas City."

  • "2nd trip-same as 1st. Food very good, not outstanding. Wines good, but not great, including private label Bordeaux. Menu a bit strange. Wait staff doesn't want to make modifications to please the customer. Also, wait staff appeared somewhat hurried & not overly friendly. Questions became an imposition. Both visits left me feeling "cold" to this restaurant. This place just leaves me thinking "snobbish" when I left. We did enjoy the evening because we were with friends. But that seemed to annoy the wait staff because we were talking and weren't ready to order when she appeared. I enjoyed my halibut, though nothing I haven't had elsewhere. Server warmed a bit by end of evening. Grade: B, but feel the potential for A+"

  • "My wife and I chose to do the four course meal. Fish dishes were amazing, meet dishes were gamy, desserts left a little to be desired. The crowd and waitress seemed to be more pretentious then friendly. I don't want to say we had a bad experience, because it wasn't, but there are better restaurants in Kansas City in that price point"

  • "Food was wonderful, but by the end of the meal, my seat had become fairly uncomfortable. Maybe something with a little more padding. Either that, or I can come gorge myself and work on my own padding. :) But other than that, a very nice meal. Green onion risotto was particularly nice with the crispy pork roast."

  • "We ordered the four course Chefs tasting menu and were thrilled with nearly every dish. The rabbit gnocchi was amazing, perfectly cooked and flavorful. The amuse of mushroom bisque was creamy and flavorful. It made me want a full bowl full.We had the Scallops, skatewing, sirloin and Hamachi and all were great. The only dish I was not a fan of was the 8hr pork. My husband and I both felt it was under seasoned and overcooked. We would not hesitate to go back."

  • "I went to Michael Smith's for my birthday dinner and we'd really disappointed. I had a four course chefs choice meal with wine pairing. My steak was smothered in barbeque sauce. My rabbit gnocchi where dried out from sitting in the window too long. The skate dish was poor as a whole not to mention the skate and shrimp where over cooked. Dessert was fine. My server had to be asked to bring the wine for my first and last course the problem was that he was no where to be found for twenty minutes after he dropped our food. Bottom line not worth your time."

  • "Lets start with his name Rob. Never asked if we want a cocktail,never offered any addional pepper. Took my plates away while one of us was still eating on the small rolls,took away the butter dish. Found that very rude. I had ordered the quail. Which was good, but the items that were supposed to be with it had changed. Some nasty grain called farrow. I should have been notified that item had change. He then slapped down the desert menue,like Im going to eat more. NoNoNo. the man acted like he did"ntcare. Or should I say have the time for us. Very disappointed in the portion size of the cod could not have been 4oz. of meat, and the 2 1/2 finger potatoes. The whole meal was hard to swallow for the prijce we had to pay."

  • "Had the 7 course chef tasting with wine pairing which I highly recommend, or fewer dishes as there is quite a lot to eat. The wine pairings were wonderful and very decent pours. Since they give you and your guest different courses you can taste up to 14 plates & wines. The second plating, salad course, was just so-so but the rest were fabulous. This is the thing to do if everything on the menu looks good and you can't decide. The service was efficient but a bit more of a friendly nature could help. A robot could have performed in a similar fashion. We'll be back and request an area where the waiter likes at least a bit of interaction."

As far as the food, some was great and met the expectations we had for a well renowned chef and restaurant like Micheal Smith, but others were simply ok - nothing exciting or great, but they were edible. All and all as far as value goes, I felt even with the groupon we had, we could have gotten better food for the price elsewhere. The service and environment were excellent and on par with the upscale restaurant experience. On a note to potential visitors that is not meant to reflect on the restaurant - we had trouble finding parking close to the restaurant, so be sure to plan ahead if driving."

  • "I wanted to thank a friend who was new to KC with an exceptional dining experience. The groupon was great for my budget and the ambience was upscale and intimate. The groupon stated must have reservations. However at 5pm, I was able to click my to a 8pm reservation with ease. When we arrived, they new my name and had a table waiting. My friend was blown away. Also I was nervious about what to order and they already had a 4 course meal special that was perfect. Like the server said it was Michael Smith's special prepared course and fun. We both enjoyed being served each course deliberately and with style. I am glad my first Michael Smith experience surpassed my expectations and also my friend thinks I'm the "cat's pajamas"!!"

Definitely short staffed on wait persons because our waitress was normally not available but other support staff picked up the slack. I believe you should have a comfortable and enjoyable relationship with your wait person. The food was outstanding."

  • "The food was amazing. I ordered the 8 Hour Pork Roast, and it was the best pork roast I have EVER eaten. My date ordered the Broken Arrow Ranch Antelope which was very good too. Before our entrees, the chef gave everyone in the restaurant a shot of the soup of the day which was a great surprise and very good. The only negative thing about the restaurant was our server. He was very slow and not friendly at all, but, who knows, he could have been having a bad day."

It was like taking a stab in the dark at trying something new and you had no idea what you were ordering. I lucked out. The scallops were fabulous. Great experience, but probably won't go back. My husband did enjoy the honesty of our server regarding the wine and which one was better over another."

  • "I'd heard great things about Michael Smith, so my huband and I decided to dine there for our 10th anniversary. Our server was fantastic. Intuitive, fun, personable with great suggestions. The food was good, not over the top fantastic. My husband had the pasta with scallops and it was nearly too salty to eat. He didn't return the food because it would've made our special occasion just...awkward....and it wasn't the server's fault. The wine was wonderful but as we sat there we realized the mood of the place was like a rest home! Next door we could hear the crowd at Extra Virgin and it was bustly with good energy but the Michael Smith side was a dull, old boring crowd with ZERO ambiance. Disappointing!"

  • "My date and I were the youngest ones there (27) by at least 2 decades. The restaurant was well decorated, but nothing really made the room stand out -- I was surprised that a place downtown didn't take full advantage of the exposed brick or other historical elements of the structure. Also, while the restaurant itself is a quiet oasis, the VERY loud noise coming from Extra Virgin next door was distracting. Don't let this fool you. We had a lovely time; our server was attentive, without being too cloying, the wine list was diverse, and the food was out of this world. I had the eight hour braised pork, and my girlfriend had the veal. We very well might return, but only on a Saturday where the noises from next door won't be so out of place."

  • "Went for the first time during KCRW on 1/22. Food and service were outstanding. One of the best meals I ate all week and probably one of the best restaurants in KC. Flavors were unbelieveable and everything was perfectly matched. Had a substitution on the appetizer but was able to get an order of the Rabbit to go and it was fantastic as well as the pierogies. Had Skatewing for the first time and would highly recommend it as well as this restaurant. Will return."

  • "I cant say the food was worth the outlandish price - I went for resturaunt week as I knew the menu was pricey.The Shrimp Bisque was good, but not excellent. Main course consisted of 6 thin slices of beef - I dont even think it was 2 ounces, a dollop of mashed potatoes which were quite good and two sprigs of brocalini - I dont think I even had 7 bites (thats because I slice the meat in half) and my entree was finished. Thank goodness I got 4 dinner rolls - I dont mind paying a bit extra for a nice dinner - but I expect to leave the table with a fuller stomach. The waiter was pleasant - but again - he just took my order and served it. Nothing special. If you just want to spend money for little return then this is the place for you."

  • "We dined here during the KC Restaurant week festivities with a predetermined menu. The rabbit and potato gnocchi and roasted cauliflower soup were delicious starters for the main event: the slow-braised pork and skate wing and shrimp. They offer a great selection of wines. We were impressed with the quality of dining, but a little surprised by the restaurant's volume and how brightly lit the atmosphere was. We've since determined that was likely due to a high volume of guests, week night dining, and the special event, as a friend has confirmed it is typically a romantic adventure. We enjoyed our evening spent there and will happily dine there in the future, but perhaps with friends next time. Enjoyable, delicious food, great service."

  • "Michael Smith's is quite possibly the best restaurant in the KC Metro. There's nothing they won't do to make your experience perfect. Their staff is professional and knowledgeable about the food and wine pairings. Nancy (GM) is always on hand to recommend a wine to pair with the meals. I've never had one bad thing on the menu. Michael makes everything on the plate harmonize and you can get a little of everything on the plate and get "perfect bites" each time with the way the components balance each other out. Highly recommend. If you encounter any problems, the staff and Michael and Nancy will make it right!"
