This is an awesome space and Inso
wished it could have been set up in an elegant fashion. Perhaps it was as Teller's..and perhaps that is why it is now called a gastropub, so it can look ordinary or bar like. Service was good, menu interesting. Food was good, but not great. I yearned for a flower on the table to counter the blotto decor and to give the architecture of the room its due."

I was visiting family in Lawrence,
KS and we wanted a special evening together. The Merchant more than fit the bill,"

Merchants has lots of beers to
choose from, but the food is heavy with minimum of flavor."

Great food great service Friday
evening January 31st. Asked close friends join us for a Valentines dinner Sunday evening February 6th. Service then was 'not' excellent. Had a different waiter who did not know what the kitchen was running out of - with the substitutions loosing the essence, taste & texture proposed. Want to go back, but will need to learn waiters names and ask ahead if items are available as stated."

Consistently the best meal in
Lawrence. My wife had a vegetarian option that was very good, and my duck was outstanding. Also, the restaurant's take on corn fritters is possibly the best thing on the menu. On past visits, we've enjoyed the burgers, but for some reason, there were no burgers listed on the menu (maybe it was a special Valentine's Day menu?)."

We sat at both the bar and in the
dining room. At both locations, we found the staff to be well informed about the menu and selections. The environment was open and vibrant. I loved the pairings of small plates and main dishes. The variety of beers on tap was extensive and eclectic... with something for everyone, regardless of taste and preference. Much of their fare is locally sourced and seasonal too! All in all, a great time and worth a repeat visit."

This was our first trip into this
restaurant since it changed from Teller's to Merchants. It was recommended by a few friends and they were right. The food was awesome. We were still talking about some of the dishes the next day. Highlights: peppers stuffed with candied nuts and basil goat cheese; the buffalo chicken meatballs; Brussels sprouts salad. On the downside, the service was just OK. The waiter didn't know enough about the menu and forgot to put in our drink orders at the bar...twice."

I'm not sure how I feel about
Merchants yet. Things like dim lighting, and suggested business casual dress make the restaurant seem more like a special occasion venue. But the noise level, the furniture and openness of the space make it more casual. I know that Merchants is relatively new, so I would say that the restaurant still needs a little time to define its character. The food is pretty good. From their menu, I have tasted the Angus Strip Loin, a brisket ravioli (Valentine's menu), the Bison Bolognese, the Sweet Corn Arancini, the Pork Belly Brochettes, and the Left Hand Milk Stout Chocolate Cake. I like everything, so far, but nothing was absolutely amazing (except for the house steak sauce--it's tart and I like it), and that's ok."

I took my girlfriend to Merchants
for Valentines Day after hearing multiple rave reviews of the restaurant. We loved the atmosphere, it's a lovely place with ambient lighting. However, the food was nothing special. I ordered the brisket ravioli and she had the bison bolognese. Both were very...bland. I was expecting a little more food and something more memorable for the price we paid. Our waitress was pretty quiet and hard to understand. There was a man, whom I assume is the owner, who greeted us when we walked in and was all over the restaurant chatting with customers though."

My husband and I had an early
Valentine's Day dinner at Merchants. The staff was wonderful, timely, attentive. Beer selection outstanding. Great food options - all delicious. The upstairs was relatively quiet which is what I like. The bar scenen is on the main level. Overall a very pleasant evening."

We had a great, knowledgeable
server, Maria, but overall the food was disappointing. The crispy walleye was good in itself but barely a tablespoon of slaw on the sandwich which made it overall quite tasteless. Soup of the day, cabbage and cauliflower stew with sausage, was good. Chocolate cake dry. Would love to come back for another try, but downtown parking is a nightmare in the evening, especially for older folks who can't walk too far."

I'm a pretty picky eater with
various food restrictions. I was pleased that this place had lots of selections on the menu I could eat and many items listed whether they were GF, DF, V. Made ordering really easy. Food was a bit salty though. Nice ambiance too. Request seating away from the windows on a cold night. First balcony seating is nice, with great view of the whole place."

Merchants is a great place to have
a drink. They have an extensive beer list and half priced Sundays are great. But the house wine is good quality at a reasonable price. I love the merchant burger! The onions are flavorful and the bun is soft and delicious, The service is always friendly and timely. Check out the vault bathroom while you are there. A unique piece of history preserved."

Wonderful variety, moderately
priced, server was knowledgeable about menu items. All four of us enjoy ed our selections - salmon, mac-n-cheese, pulled pork sandwich, and a burger. The kale caesar salad was great as was the bean soup. I highly recommend!"

We had a great dinner at Merchants
- It works for both my wife and I because they offer both carnivore and vegetarian options. Depending on the evening it can be rather loud in the space as it is so open and seats so many. We've tried things across the entire menu and have been very happy with the revamped space, feel and menu!"

Food was tasty and creative,
reasonably priced, and delivered promptly. Server was attentive, courteous, and helpful. Ingredients are mostly local, which is a nice change. Definitely a recommend taking your SO and friends here for a treat."

We had been here before and it was
good but not great. This time, it was outstanding. The food was great, our server was funny and attentive. One person in our group is a vegetarian and it can be difficult to find a dish as some restaurants that is vegetarian friendly and worth the money. The vegetarian dish that she got was amazing and fresh. The dessert was out of this world. Best I've ever had. Overall, it was outstanding."

Great wine list (for Kansas,
restricted as it is by the alcohol distributors); and fantastic long list of beers. Although typically a red wine drinker, I opted for a dark beer (something called Left Hand Fade to Black?). Very nice for a cold evening. I had the paella, which was good, maybe not as richly seasoned as in Madrid, but worthy of a try--others at my table had sandwiches of various types and were quite happy with their choices. They had french fries which were praised. I also ordered a side of toasted Brussels Sprouts with nuts, which convinced my friends to start liking the plant after negative experiences as children. All in all, a very good dinner and excellent conscientious, but not intrusive, service."

My food was actually excellent,
but I rated it 4 stars because my husband's chicken was a bit overdone. I had the scallops and the curried cauliflower, and aside from the cauliflower not being hot, it was very good. I went with the server's wine recommendation and was happy with it, although she took away my glass without asking if I wanted another (which I did). So they missed out on that sale! Otherwise the service was very good. I was happy overall and will be back."

The menu was limited but the
selections were very good. I love meat but I think this is the first time I ate an all veggie meal. Very filling and great flavors. I will be back!!"

.We've been to Merchants twice and
were impressed with the food on both occasions. While the ambience is nice, it is a bit noisy, or "energetic" but not to the point where it becomes mind numbing. The pork chop and the sweet potatoes were truly outstanding, along with the mixed green salad. We were there on a night where it was full and the staff handled the crowd quite well. However, I'd still say the food is the star."

So good! The loaded potatoes and
the French onion soup were my favorite!"

Interesting menu with a wonderful
variety of items at reasonable prices. Cocktail menu is fun as is the beer menu. We ordered a number of foods including beer and a cocktail, soup, crab cakes, scallops, tuna, brussel sprout salad, and bison pasta. Oddly the drinks were served after the soup and salad. The beer was not the one ordered and it took a few minutes to catch the server's attention to correct the error. We enjoyed all the dishes except the Bison Bolognese which was barely warm. Because the server was so busy I didn't bother getting his attention again to have the dish warmed. The chocolate beet torte ws good but not the dense "decadent" cake we expected. Inspite of the "glitches" we will definitely return to Merchants."

The food was great. The open floor
plan made it very hard to hear. We were yelling through the entire meal. We were there for a birthday dinner but the occasion was never acknowledged. We had a request to switch a side item out but it was denied which is odd."

This was our first visit to the
former Teller's restaurant. We tasted the truffle potato leek soup (excellent; a little on the cool side), classic hamburger (just OK), mac and cheesemonger (OK), pumpkin agnolotti (good; maybe a little too pumpkinny), short rib sloppy joe (very good), and kale and white bean griddle cakes (very good). So the food was good to very good. Our table, though, was right next to a heater vent that was pouring out cold air. When asked if he could do anything about it, the server indicated no, and that he had gotten yelled at before when he tried to shut it off for another customer. We resorted to hanging our coats over a fire extinguisher that was nearby. That helped block the air, but it was still too cold."

The new Merchants Pub has all of
the elements required for a fun evening, great food, spirits and excellent service. It's one of the top 5 places to be and be seen in Lawrence."

serve great roasted brussels
sprouts and veggie mixes without covering them in fat (butter, olive oil, whateer). That plus good scallops makes for a great meal. My friend loved the Merchants burger"

Went pre-concert, we were not
disappointed. Good food, good service what more can you ask for?"
Dined on 12/6/2013
Lots of beers on tap. My brother
and I split the kale caesar salad, Pub Plate (I think that's what it was called: homemade bratwurst, duck prosciutto, giardiniera on bread) and rabbit-apple sausage. My wife had an excellent burger. The goat-cheese cheesecake was also great. Prices were reasonable and the food was delicious. Servers were friendly and helpful. We'll be going back."
Dined on 11/29/2013
All the items on the menu are
based on local ingredients. Although the menu doesn't necessarily describe the dishes well. My rabbit cacciatore was good very light on the rabbit and heavy on cacciatore and grits. The chicken my wife had was a much better chose with a generous serving of chicken breast. She was allowed to substitute a vegetable for the sweet potato fries it came with. the staff is efficient and knowledgable."

Had some old friends in town and
wanted them to see the inside of Merchants. Had hoped the food would match the setting and it did. In fact, it was much improved from my first visit. Look forward to going back."

This was my first time trying
merchants. It was very good for lunch, and I look forward to going back for dinner."
Dined on 11/16/2013
The menu is constrained but
adequate. This is the place to go if you are looking for a great beer selection. I was impressed by the breadth of the local brew offerings."
Dined on 11/1/2013
A very nice beer selection and
inventive dishes combine for a fine bistro dining experience."
Dined on 10/20/2013
We started with superior crab
cakes, then incredibly tasty kale Caesar salads followed by the special - seared yellow tail over a thick corn chowder, which my husband and I shared (the chef divided it for us without asking.) Our friends said Merchants was a happy combination of Free State and Pachamama's which is high praise. The service was excellent from top to bottom and I don't know when I've seen such a diverse crowd in that building before. Great time. Great job by Merchants."
Dined on 10/18/2013
Gave the new Merchants Pub and
Plate a try although was not sure what to expect from the name. They had been pushing the large selection of beers on tap as the main draw. While they did have a fairly large number of beers, the selection was very heavily dominated by IPAs. If you like IPAs, this is the place. However, since I am not a big IPA fan, I was underwhelmed by the selection. Based on the name I had expected the menu to consist of mainly "small plates" but found a rather normal restaurant menu. While the selection was limited, everything we ordered was well-prepared and tasty. So the chef has made a wise choice in keeping the number of items on the menu small but having each item be excellent. We will be back!"

We were a party of 7 and it was
our first visit. This is basically Teller's with a more limited and more expensive menu. It does offer a great beer selection and the service was outstanding. It is quite expensive for what you get. There are other better options in Lawrence so it's unlikely we'll return."
Dined on 10/7/2013
The menu selection is not big but
most of the food is very tasty. I highly recommend the braised pork Sloppy Joe if it's available."
Dined on 10/5/2013
Enjoyed our first meal with
attentive service and good food. May be a bit pricey to eat here with any frequency. Menu clearly included seasonal items; hopeful it will change with seasons and not become stagnant. Charcuterie is quite good; still need to work on the duck rillette. Ambiance is more casual than previous occupant (Tellers'), which is, I think, a good thing."
