Diner Reviews
  • "First, the food is excellent at Mateos and consistently high quality. Wine list will also not disappoint. Was my wifes birthday and we took another couple. We were disappointed that despite our early booking (6.16pm) we were seated closest to the kitchen, right in the middle at the back of the restaurant. In hindsight, I should have said something when we were seated, but didnt really want to make a scene and wasnt sure if the restaurant was fully booked. In the end, no one came and sat down at the tables behind us (towards the door and away from the kitchen). Thought the staff were ok - took a while for our server to come to us initially and didnt deserve his 20% tip of a meal at $440 for 4 (yes, we drank some terrific wine)"

  • "It was just a dinner with a friend but my first wine pick was not available and when the entre came my partners meal was wrong. The waiter acknowledged this and went to the kitchen to have the correct entre made. That created that awkward stage where you don't touch your entre for fear you'll be done by the time his arrives. Everyone was pleasant."

  • "Food is outstanding, and the service surpurb!! Probably not a great place to go for a quiet romantic indoor dinner."

  • "This is the second time I've been to Mateo. Both times it was fantastic! Great food, great cocktails, great service. What else do you want? :)"

  • "I haven't been to Mateo in many years and was delighted to see it was still a great restaurant! The service was fantastic and the food was delicious and the surprise of our visit (early, before going to the theater) was the great happy hour menu! Great evening!"

  • "Mateo was a wonderful experience. The service was very good and the food outstanding. We had a great time."

  • "We were so happy with this restaurant recommendation. My husband and I were able to relax and enjoy appetizers, entrees and desserts without feeling rushed. The service, food, and presentation were wonderful. we will return again for another special occasion."

  • "Was surprised that the restaurant was completely full for lunch on a Tuesday. So glad that I made a reservation. The food was excellent especially the French Onion Soup. The service was extremely slow. I think there was not enough staff to deal with the crowd. If the large numbers are a daily occurrence than there should be more staff. Too bad to mar such a lovely lunch with feeling that things are moving way too slow."

  • "we sat at the front group table. ate good food, drank good wine and made a few new friends. It was a very enjoyable evening. The staff also was very helpful and friendly."

  • "I was looking for somewhere special to take my bride of 31 years for our anniversary. This was the perfect place. Mateos reminded us both of our favorite French restaurant in Maryland, the Cafe De Paris. My favorite there (and here) is the steak and Fritis! My wile loved her Salmon. Salads were incredible as were the desserts we took home to enjoy there. We will be back and will let all of our friends know about Mateo."

  • "This place is truly a gem and though a little small - and hence at times pretty cramped - the food and wine and service more than make up for it. How they keep the - very high - quality and inventiveness going is beyond me, but I am hoping they can keep it up. Certainly compared with some of the the "competition" on the west end of Pearl this place is WELL worth a visit. Memorable as always!!"

  • "Our waiter recommended a perfect wine; your meals were to perfection; our service friendly and gracious. Mateo is the perfect restaurant to catch up with a friend or to celebrate a special event, all the while being waited on attentively yet not overbearingly and with sincere attention to perfection."

  • "been here several times over the years but had not been recently. The food is still as good as it ever was but the service was lacking., My husband and I went to celebrate both of our birthdays, the restaurant knew that and other than confirming that this was the case upon our arrival they never acknowledged it again. We both had dessert, which we were charged for. Not a big deal except that most places would comp a dessert on your birthday or at least put a candle in it. We sat at the table with two empty wine glasses for about 20 minutes before I finally flagged down the waitress and ordered another. Then our food came and we still didn't have our wine. For the price and for what this restaurant is trying to be, the service needs work."

  • "The entrees here are good and the service is as well, although the wild boar ragout is extremely salty and the croque Monsieur is dry and somewhat lacking in flavor. You won't be wowed by the experience as much being simply pleased."

  • "This place has very good food, it's more expensive than it needs to be, and the noise level in the restaurant almost makes me decide to go somewhere else. I had a cocktail that tasted good, but was served in a glass that was occupied almost entirely by a gigantic ice cube, and cost nine dollars. I think thats a little ridiculous."

  • "We have been to Mateo many times, including several special event dinners. We enjoy the standard menus for lunch and dinner, but the special prix fixe Valentine's Day dinner was exceptional, especially with the wine pairings. And they had no problem substituting a sparkling wine for the dessert wine for my wife, who does not like sweet wines. Great dinner."

  • "Three couples on Valentines Day: great food and wine. We go there often. Steak frites is just great!"

  • "Restaurant was very busy and food was great, but once we were given dessert menus, it was an hour before it was served. Waiter was apologetic and he did give us a gift card. Next time we will not order dessert."

  • "Our first visit to Mateo, but will not be our last. Entrees very good indeed - best interpretation of Cassoulet this frequent visitor to France has had in the USA. Good affordable wine list - we tried 4 different off the by the glass selection and were very pleased. Desserts didn't quite make it - Pot au chocolat was too close to a muffin and Tarte Tatin was not quite there"

  • "This was our second time here. it's much nicer if you can be on the patio, the noise inside is a bit much. My only complaint about the food is that the beans were not fully cooked. All good flavors, though. The desserts were yummy, but not the best I've had."
    Dined on 2/11/2014
  • "Nice atmosphere. Pretty quiet on a Monday night. The beans in the cassoulet were "al dente" rather than creamy and the dish was a bit dry-- not the warming homey dish I was expecting. Boar ragu had a good flavor but was also on the dry side. Overall average"

  • "Had an unacceptably horrid meal! All four diners were dismayed, and two of them found their main courses inedible. Yet in November I had one of my best meals ever in Boulder there. The most recent meal was so bad none of us will try Mateo again for months."

  • "Drinks were superb here at mateos. The new Mateo Sazarac was perfectly made. Steak frites was superb! Nice wine selection."

  • "One of Boulder's better places. The frites are a real treat."

  • "The dining area is light and airy. The menu is varied in its options, but not overwhelming. The server was quite helpful with suggestions of both entrees and wine pairings. When my guest said she was gluten free, he immediately began pointing out the numerous selection available and the accommodations that could be created from non-gluten free selections. I enjoyed delicious slightly spicy mussels which I would certainly order again. She had a beautifully presented beef salad which she said was just right. Mateo is on my list of keepers."

  • "Mateo is that special mix of gourmet and real food. It has a classy ambience with warmth and energy. The service staff is friendly, attentive and competent. The prices are very reasonable for the quality. One of my favorite places to eat in all of Colorado!"

  • "The food at Mateo is reliably delicious; the shrimp appetizers are generous and perfect in texture and taste and salad greens fresh and dressed just right. The trout is delectable. My friend had the massive and perfectly grilled burger. Most notable on every occasion has been the professional and friendly waitpeople--this time our waiter informed us we barely came in time for the happy hour (we had only planned on dinner) and encouraged us to enjoy some wine and appetizers before the final call. He was gracious and attentive, and the young woman who seated us was most gracious in finding us a more preferable table. The din gets rather loud around 7-8:30, but the food makes the volume worth the visit."

  • "Our first visit to this restaurant, two of us had the trout, which was really tasty, and two had burgers, which they enjoyed. Service was quite good...kept on refilling our water glasses, and left us alone to talk. We even got to take advantage of happy hour prices on a Saturday night! I would return."

  • "We had great drinks (mixed drink of "missing link" and recommended wines) and Excellent French Onion soup, licorice-flavored mussels which were pretty good and steak-frites which was very good. Dessert was pot-Chocolate, which was an ok lava cake. Service was very slow. It took us 2 hours and the place was 1/3 full. Other tables got out in under 1 hour so it was our waiter who talked to other tables more than wait on us. He and the other staff were very nice, just not very quick."

  • "This was probably the third or fourth visit to this restaurant over the last couple of years for me, and they just keep the quality at a *very* high standard. The menu is very good - varied and interesting - and the food well prepared and just about the "right" sized portions. Service was - as always - attentive and excellent and the restaurant is well maintained with a good noise level and well laid out - perfect for a romantic evening. No hesitation in recommending this place, and am actually looking forward to going back again in the not too distant future."

  • "My wife and I had a late lunch at Mateo on Christmas eve and it was most enjoyable. By 2:00, the restaurant had cleared out somewhat so the noise level didn't interfere with conversation. (When it is busy Mateo can be quite noisy, though it is a "happy" noise.) My wife had a seafood dish, I had the ham entry and we enjoyed a bottle of wine. The meals were tasty and well presented. We had a window seat near the front on a crisp, but beautiful Boulder day. The waitstaff was friendly, helpful and attentive. All in all, this was a fine lunch on a special day. We've had mixed results in our previous visits to Mateo, but today was perfect."

  • "The cuisine is exemplary, fairly priced, well portioned, and supurbly served. My wife and I love to dine here for an evening out or a special occasion. Dress up or go casual you'll fit in either way."

  • "Mateo bumped Brasserie 10 10 out of top spot in my book. The food was divine. I think what someone considering Mateo just needs to consider is that it's a small place so 1. Make Reservations if you really want to be sure to get in and 2. You're going to be rather close to other tables. This wasn't a problem for us but I could see how someone wanting an intimate private evening together might feel it was a little too close (although they might have tables more suited to this so just be sure to ask when making your reservation). This was an outstanding meal and and an outstanding evening. Thanks Mateo!"

  • "When it's a special occasion and you want fancy but not formal, and you want great food and drink but not to take out a loan, AND when you want to be treated a little bit like family, Mateo is the place. Christmas Eve was our evening to dine out and our group was all in agreement-it had to be Mateo. A holiday meal raises the bar for any restaurant and these people did not disappoint. The ONLY sour note were two nearby tables each with a crying baby. Not the fault of management. I wonder if they have an office they could have offered to the parents of the really unhappy baby for a few minutes of soothing quiet time? All of the guests would have appreciated that. All the food was super. Oysters/scallops/boar ragu yum. Eat dessert too"

  • "Our work team went to Mateo for our Holiday Lunch, and it was fabulous. The server was very attentive and knowledgeable about the items on the menu. The food was well prepared and very tasty. The only negative we had was that it did get very loud once more people came in. Otherwise, thank you Mateo for an excellent experience in fine dining!"
