Diner Reviews
  • "Made a reservation at Market based on Trip Advisor Reviews, and was definitely not disappointed. The food and dining experience were absolutely amazing. We had the halibut and the mac & cheese, both delicious! Looking forward to return whenever I am back in St. Helena. "

  • "This restaurant seemed to be very popular! The bartender was the most knowledgeable and friendly bartender I have met in a long time. The chopped salad was excellent! I was not impressed with the Tiramisu, There was way too much cognac!!! The staff was very friendly!!!"

  • "Went to celebrate a family birthday. The warm welcome mentioned by others is distinctive and adds a special note. Service started off a little slow and did not recover much but we were not in a hurry. Everything we chose was very, very good. Began with mussels and lobster roll (not your Cape Cod lobster roll by any stretch). Braised lamb shank was superb comfort food with deep layers of flavor. A halibut special served on seasonal local vegetables with a great sauce was perfectly prepared. Prices are reasonable, for Napa, and the atmosphere is classic bistro. Highly recommend."

  • "We dined at Market last October twice in three days and did the same this time. Food is great, and staff, especially Lauren and Chelsea, bartender/servers, plus of course Eddie, owner. Locals all love this place, a good sign too."

  • "I think sometimes this place gets overlooked for two reasons. One, they lack an outdoor space. Two, the are right on the main drag in St. Helena, and thus customers must deal with parking downtown. Also, there's always that subset of people who avoid downtowns no matter what. Well, you'd be missing an excellent restaurant, with top-rate service, food/wine knowledgeable staff, nice atmosphere, and a top-notch chef. I went twice and I can especially recommend the Halibut and the Fruit Cobbler desert. I happen to love downtown St. Helena, so I never hesitated going here. It's highly rated, anyway, so fortunately, it's not so overlooked, I guess. Ask your waiter for his/her favorite cabernet or merlot, etc. You wont be disappointed."

  • "Pros: We had great service, and one of the warmes, most sincere greetings at the door that I've ever had...really made us feel welcome. It's a great space in one of the nicest hamlets around. Nice menu choices, beautiful bar, etc. Huevos Rancheros were good! And all food was beautifully plated. For the location, not bad prices. Cons: I had a broccoli and potato soup (du jour) that was really just average. But the disappointing meal was the Filet Mignon Medallions, which were riddled with grissle, had a big visible vein/artery, tough, and didn't even have good flavor. And the shoestring frites were cold and bland...may have just been my dish and not representative of what they typically serve."

  • "We wanted something light, but good, and were not disappointed! Service was mpeccable, right from the minute we walked in,. The food was fresh, delicioue and well prepared. The dungeoness crab salad was just sensational!"

  • "This was our third time back to Market and we loved it. Awesome service and great menu. Really enjoyed ourselves and we will be back next time we are in St. Helena."

  • "My cousins were traveling from out of town and were running late for our 5 o'clock reservation. Although Open Table had no 5:30 availability for the three of us, I called Market and the manager was kindly willing to provide us a table at the time we needed. The staff was very kind and welcoming as they always are when I go there. The food...beyond amazing."

  • "Ambiance welcoming, owner made patrons feel wecomed like locals. Service attentive, waiter knowledgeable, engaging. Food unique combinations that delighted the palette, with presentations to match. A wonderful evening for a special occassion or just out for dinner, we'll definitely return and share this finf with friends."

  • "We fine dine all of the time. What we treasure is fine food, well presented and--hopefully--with a twist or two to reflect the chef's creativity. We really got that in part at Market, but at the price we paid, it was more than a bit off from our own personal target. The appetizers was superb. Our main courses were both fish dishes that seemed to be striving for difference. Didn't work. I am sorry, but salmon and chorizo are not complementary. Snapper in oxtail soup is close to an abomination. Desserts were also superb, but the overall experience was polluted by the main courses."

  • "We went. We enjoyed. We went back the next night and found it just as consistently delicious as the night before! We'll be back when we're here!"

  • "Everything on the menu looked yummy! What we ordered was amazing just wish I could have tasted it all. Lobster rolls and tuna tare tare was so good! The service was perfect! Waiter very knowledgable and offered many ideas. A must if your in St. Helena!!"

  • "This is one of my favorite places to go when I am having lunch with friends with whom I want to visit. The atmosphere is lovely with the stone walls and beautiful antique bar. The staff is friendly and gracious. I particularly love their hamburgers, but everything is delicious."

  • "They're very similar: big portions of fine quality ingredients. Whether you'll like the conception is a separate issue. We don't like Mustards; of the two we would prefer Market. At both the cooking is over-the-top: "more is better". The restraint and elegance of chefs like Chris Jones or Perry Hoffman aren't even on the radar here. The crabcake was delicious and massive, but the beurre blanc was richness on top of richness and too heavily applied. The porcini mushroom ravioli were well-filled and generously portioned, but tasted too much of tart red wine and shiitake, not porcini. The cornbread is 3 big squares, so don't order more than one plate unless you've got a group. We rank this higher than Redd, lower than Ca'Momi."

  • "Any of the "highly rated" reviews of Market are correct. Our first experience there was great and we will be certain to dine there again. We were greeted as soon as we entered and were shown to our table. The wait staff were always prompt with service and suggestions and were friendly (the real kind, not the fake). Food was great, respectable portion size, well prepared and arrived at the table warm and well presented. Did not make it to the desserts because the entree's were too good. Will have to pace ourselves next time. Please note: Market is the exception to all the other resturants in the area as they Do Not charge a corkage fee. Thank you for that Market!"

  • "We visit the wine country often and normally have dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. This time we decided to try a new one. Market is highly rated and the location is convenient. Unfortunately the food was disappointing: My lobster rolls wrapped in rice paper was nice, but the rainbow trout was oily and lack of seasoning, and the cauliflower puree was too sweet. My husband's salad was bland and the meatloaf special was tough like a baseball. It actually required some effort to cut. They also forgot our side order of spinach- maybe that's a good thing since we had lost our appetite. While it was disappointing but not horrible, given that there are so many other choices in St. Helena, we probably won't go back anytime soon."

  • "Our new Favorite in Napa/St. Helena! Food was wonderful, service wonderful. Alfie might be the nicest, friendliest waiter ever! He makes the meal so enjoyable!!! Great spot, and...the most beautiful mahogany bar outside of Chicago!"

  • "I really liked Market and I really wanted to love my dining experience at Market as I had read such good things. However, it was not to be. Our table for two was crowded in with other tables and was in the bar area which is a cement or tile floor---made for noise. The waitress had a hard time maneuvering around the tables because they were so close together. Our waitress ended up totally forgetting about us once the restaurant became full/busy. We finished our meal and it took quite a long time before someone came to clear the plates. The waitress never returned to ask if we would like dessert and/or coffee/tea. I finally got her attention and, again, she never asked, she just brought the "check". I think it was just too busy for her."

  • "This is a very pleasent restaurant with good service. I had the special (chicken salad sandwich and potato/brocolli soup. It was very good, very fresh and made with homemade bread. My husband had the filet mignon stew which was excellent. We enjoyed our lunch thoroughly."

  • "From the front of the house to the wait staff and the presentation plus great food quality, this place has it going on. If you don't try the mussels for an appetizer you will continue to think you've had the best ever once before! Cheers."

  • "A must when visiting Napa Valley! Great cocktails, amazingly priced wine and food all of very high quality. Jesse and the ENTIRE wait staff were awesome. Will be making this spot a wine country tradition!"

  • "My wife and I shared several small plates and each one was fantastic, especially the mac -n-cheese which was the best I have ever had. Sat at the bar and met the GM who was friendly, hard working and a great ambassador for the restaurant. The bartender was obviously well trained and did a great job with us. Also met one of the owners before we left and he was great too. Great atmosphere, great food, great service. We highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "Most of the diners were obviously locals, but that didn't mean that visitors like us weren't welcome. The ahi tartare was excellent and recommended wine choice perfect. The calamari were a hit with the aficionado in the group. We didn't believe our waiter, but the lamb shanks really didn't need a knife! Again a perfect wine recommendation made them even better. The Mac and Cheese was good, but expectations were high, so we were a bit disappointed. Butterscotch pudding, on the other hand, deserves the praise."

  • "The place has just the right amt of energy and ambience. The food was as expected - excellent. Special call out to the Lobster rolls which were the best with an awesome dipping sauce. Tenderloin appetizers melted in your mouth. Accompanied by a nice Sangiovese - great dinner, great service and the price is fair given the service ambience and quality"

  • "This may be wine country's most consistently good restaurant. Without doubt, it is the most under-appreciated. Food is outstanding with a fresh menu that changes frequently. Service and ambiance are excellent and prices are moderate for the area."

  • "My girlfriend and I had a nice dinner at Market. I had the Lamb Shank and she had oysters and a Crab Louie Salad. We would definitely come back again. The wait staff was really friendly, the restaurant has a nice and semi-casual atmosphere (jeans are fine) and the food was great and reasonably priced."

  • "Wife & I were celebrating special occasion and came across this place. Little did we know we were in for a treat. The food was wonderful (don't think you can go wrong with anything you pick). The host, waitress and overall service was terrific. Street parking was plentiful and the location reminded me of neighborhood restaurants in Paris. Better yet was fact you could bring your own special bottle of wine without worrying about corking fees! We are already telling all our friends about this gem!"

  • "Mimosas are a little pricey at $10 each but I forgot about that once the first two appetizers hit the table. We had the calamari and the lobster rolls. Both were spectacular! My date had a bowl of lobster bisque and I had the Mac & cheese. Both were good but nothing compared to the two previously mentioned appetizers. The highlight was the S'mores dessert! Roasting marshmallows at the table was so much fun! Made us feel like kids again! Accompanying the roasted marshmallows are Rice Krispie treats, chocolate, peanut butter and graham crackers of course. The service was slow with only 3 full tables. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Nice atmosphere, food was fantastic! Loved the specialty cocktails too. We had the trout and the cornish game hen entrees, both delicious. For dessert we had to get the s'mores... It says "enough for two", but I'd say 3 or 4 people could share it. It features a mini hibachi delivered to the table along with a platter of marshmallows, house made chocolate spread, peanut butter spread, and the best part --house made graham crackers! There were also rice krispie treats on the platter as well. Toast your own marshmallows and build your own s'more creation. Definitely recommend."
