Diner Reviews
  • "Saved Ludwig's for our last night in Vail. We were not disappointed. The duck special and the potato soup were outstanding."

  • "Regrettably this is a bad review of a fine restaurant. I say that because on the other 4 occasions that I dined there the food and service were impeccable. However this night, Sunday March 9, 2014, it was a complete and total disaster. When being seated at a table we were taken to one then switched to another, with no explanation. I ordered the Dover Sole as I have before, and also recommended it to a business associate that was dining with us. It was served almost cold and was riddled with bones. I barely ate one bite."

  • "A hidden gem with old-word charm, ambiance and a small but varied menu excellently prepared and served."

  • "While it may sound strange to have seafood in a restaurant with a distinct Alpine decor and ambiance, there is nothing wrong with this combination at Ludwig's. The food is delicious, well prepared and served quickly (but not too quickly...) and the service is extremely attentive, professional, and above all, very friendly. It was the best meal during the week we stayed in Vail."

  • "Elegant, old world and refined setting with top of the cart food! Service is perfect. A must visit in Vail!"

  • "There is a new chef and the food here is better than ever. The ambience and service have always been top notch and that has not changed. We have been to Austria to ski and the dining rooms here are more atmospheric! We tried the seafood side of the menu. I chose the tuna variations to start and loved it. If you are a sashimi cover this is for you. My husband chose the boulliabaise starter which was surprisingly light, but we both liked the tuna better. I had the lobster next and my husband had the Dover sole. We were both delighted with our choices. We paired this with a white burgundy recommended by the sommelier. After dinner we stopped by the King's Club. The entire evening was exceptional."

  • "Ludwigs is vail just reopened with a new chef. Our meal was amazing and the service was 5 star. We had the scampi tempura, dover sole and butterscotch bread pudding for dessert. All great!"

  • "Superb Lounge with comfortable sofas and plush chairs & romantic European style decor. Very good singer/guitar player. Lovely dining atmosphere with good wine list & very good food served by beautifully costumed waitresses. & waiters in traditional native dress. Delightful surprise at meal's end is the fruit flavored cotton candy dessert at no additional charge. Other desserts available on the menu . For feeling like a VIP this restaurant is exceptional."

  • "Best Red Snapper I've ever had! We will definitely return on our next visit to Vail."

  • "Excellent food, excellent service. I highly recommend Ludwig's for anyone looking for a special dinner."

  • "Ludwig's left much to be desired. We had the tuna pizza which came soaked in an aoli that masked the ahi tuna. The lamb chops were delicious but again, the sauce covered everything and one couldn't really taste the meat, the beets or anything else on the plate. The beef duo was only ok. Our real issue was that for the truly high prices, and such good ingredients, why didn't we walk out wanting to return??"

  • "I had picked this restaurant as i wanted a very special dinner for the celebration of my birthday. I was so disappointed with the quality of the food and the service. Very disappointed as the lamb chops were all fat and the fish not well prepared. Extremely slow service."

  • "Beautiful dining room, excellent service, very good food(dessert uninspired). Would definitely return."

  • "excellent short rib. we liked the sorbet trio for dessert- presentation was great and flavored were delicious. trout and the salmon were very good too."

  • "Food was delicious. Music was radio playing and didn't match the ambience of the place. Waiter was very knowledgable and experienced."

  • "With the name, was expecting heavy overcooked German food and was pleasantly surprised. The wine list was exceptional--we had a 2001 Lynch Bages that was very well priced. The tuna on the tuna pizza appetizer was exceptional as was the sauce (not wild about the crust it was on, but that is more me than the appetizer). The lamb loin was perfectly cooked and the taste was exceptional. The accompaniments were perfect. As but one point of the perfect execution, my entree plate was still warm when done eating--a minor point, but when paying for great food it is pathetic if the chef is too lazy to properly heat the plates. Desert was fun (not big into desert). One of the better places in Vail."

  • "The new fresh seafood menu is a terrific change from their old heavy German selections. The black cod special was outstanding. The atmosphere feels like you are in a chateau in the Austrian Alps. After a quiet delicious dinner you can move to the Kings Court bar area where you can enjoy traditional music and dancing fun!"

  • "Nothing on their website about a price-fixed dinner on Christmas, so that was a surprise when we got there."

  • "Service was great!! From the manager, wait staff to sommelier. The sommelier was super friendly, helpful & attentive. Some food courses were great & some ok. Raw oysters were fresh, cold, shucked perfectly but had too much vinegar in them (better to leave that on the side), my husband had the tuna/foie gras & said it was awesome. Salads were great but the entrees were disappointing. His fish was blad but salty & my filet was over cooked & the side potatoes were too salty to eat. Dessert was the molton lava cake & that was good. The beehive banana cotton candy was addictive!!"

  • "This place was our favorite in Vail. We ended up going back for a second time before we left. We had 2 young children and at times they got excited, but otherwise the restaurant was quiet! This place is a must"

  • "Wonderful, attentive service. The trout special was cooked perfectly. One of the best trout dishes my husband has ever had. The lobster special was well worth it, too. An excellent evening!"

  • "Expensive but such is life in Vail. Beautiful bar area. Must have drinks before or after in King's Bar (piano lounge)."

  • "Lovely presentation, but small portions for the price."

  • "The food was very good here. I got the Elk Wellington and she got the tenderloan. Both entrees were prepared well. Our server was also the Sommelier and he was outstanding! Not only did he bring us some wine to test taste while I was poring over the expansive wine list, he offered us a glass on sinfandel to accompany our Italian wine so that we could ocmpare and contrast compliments of the house. The atmosphere is super here as is the piano bar attached to the restaurant and part of the hotel. The meal was not cheap, yet we felt that every dollar was well spent."

  • "It was the most romantic Valentine's dinner we ever had! The ambiance was so romantic and cozy. Red rose pedal all over the table... Tango dancers swinging by the tables... Food and wine pairing were excellent! I highly recommend this restaurant for any dinner! Their Sunday brunch is amazing too!"

  • "Exceptional in all respects---the restaurant is gorgeous, the service is impeccable, and the food is creative and beautifully presented. If you are looking for an elegant meal in Vail, dont miss Ludwig's. It is well priced also. And for however long you dine, you will feel as if you are in the Alps!"

  • "The food was disappointing, especially for the price point. Service, wine, and ambiance were very, very good."

  • "This restaurant had the worst service I had ever experienced. The food was good but the portions were pathetic. My group waited an hour and a half for the appetizers, time during which we were bombarded by water and bread. Gave it 3 stars because of earlier experiences in this restaurant i don't know what happened this time but i was really disappointed."

  • "Consistently good. A great and better alternative to Sweet Basil and others in Vail. The quality of cuisine was fantastic, however no one can match the service."

  • "Not a great dining experience. The Executive Chef, Steven Topple, was not in on Sunday. We were the only diners in the restaurant from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Food was good but not great. We expected better things than we got."

  • "We had a wonderful experience. Food and service were outstanding. We will definitely be back."

  • "The whole place is a bit over the top with the atmosphere - felt like I was at an Epicurian Disney World. Not necessarily a bad thing. My food was great but 2 out of the 5 of us thought it was just average. Dover Sole was "fishy". I encouraged my guest to tell the restaurant but she was uncomfortable."
