Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was excellent. Meal, Service, Atmosphere! This was our second time to dine at Just Dinner and we will return again and again."

  • "Very eclectic atmosphere. Food was exceptional! We'll be back!"

  • "other than one small issue I would say this place was great. My wife and I went for our 6th wedding anniversary and it was quiet, cozy and the food was delicious"

  • "My wife and I were looking for a quiet, romantic place for an above-average dinner experience and we found that. The ambience met and exceeded our expectations, more than making up for any shortcomings. It'sa charming, converted homestead probably built in the 30 or 40's. I half expected to see a cat or two curled and napping in a window sill or fireplace mantle. Three separate small, intimate dining rooms helped create privacy without feeling out on an island. As for the shortcomings, our server was obviously new, a bit nervous and a little unsure of himself, but we cut him enough slack without things ever getting awkward. And, our entrees were slightly overcooked and mine, a little cold, but not so much to feel compelled to return it."

  • "My Partner and I were looking for a new place to celebrate our anniversary. When 'Just Dinner' came up, I was a little nervous because it didn't seem like a good spot to celebrate a special occasion and frankly, it's name is very similar to a dating site. After looking over the website and reviews we decided to give it a try. Our experience was wonderful. I can honestly say, there was not one negative thing I can say about this place. All of the staff was friendly and professional. The food arrived right on time and was wonderful. There are several vegetarian options and they were willing to alter dishes to suit vegetarian needs. I strongly encourage anyone looking for a new restaurant to visit Just Dinner."

  • "This was the third time we've been to Just Dinner and each time we go for a special occasion, this time being our 2nd anniversary. The restaurant is BYOB. They do not offer a wine list which is great for myself as I have a pretty nice cellar of wine and I am able to bring bottles that I know I will enjoy. The host immediately seated us for our 8pm reservation and our waiter came and advised us of the specials and uncorked one of our wine bottles. We ordered the cheese plate which had great variety. For our meals I ordered the crab cake special and my girlfriend the smoked duck. Both were excellent. For dessert we had the creme brulee dusted in lavendar, also delicious. Our waiter was friendly but not obtrusive. Highly recommended!"

  • "Special items for each menu category- we had the 2 special entrees and special appetizer. All of them were very good! The desserts were particularly impressive. Good to know: BYOB; there's no real signage so look for "1915" lit up in blue in the window; and homemade Nutella truffles with your check! Yum! We would definitely return!"

  • "I love the relaxed feel of Just Dinner - like a comfortable dining room in a friends home. This was our second visit and the food was delicious and we would definitely return to try more dishes. Our waiter was very attentive to our needs and made sure we were satisfied with our experience. I would highly recommend Just Dinner to family and friends."

  • "I was stunned when our waiter came to me told me that there was another party waiting for our table. Perhaps had the food service been quicker, we would not have needed to stay longer. I have never been told this before and it ruined the evening for me. If you go there, ask for a timeframe in which you are allowed to be at the table. If you're running slow, don't order dessert or just don't finish your meal, or you too may be told that you need to boot scoot and boogie out the door! Awful!!!!"

  • "This is our second time here, and it was not as good as the first. Service was a little week, and food was just ok."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our wonderful meal here. The foie gras was magnificent as well as the crab cake appetizer. This is a hidden gem!!"

  • "My wife and I often come to Just Dinner because it is our favorite neighborhood BYOB. Leila, Daniel, Cruz and Tony are wonderful and food is fantastic. Great place for a wonderful dinner close friends too!"

  • "We decided to try this restaurant after reading the great reviews. All of our entrees were delicious. I didn't love the sweet potato soup--I didn't realize it would be sweet like the potato casserole that is served at Thanksgiving (which I don't like). I also didn't love being seated right next to the curtain that separated the dining area from the kitchen, especially since we were the first ones there and they could have seated us anywhere. But overall the dinner was a success."

  • "The food at Just Dinner was very tasty and the serving sizes were appropriate-not too big, not too small. The only reason we had anything left over was because we were saving room for dessert. The ambiance here is very sweet and romantic, and the restaurant is very comfortable. Our server was nice, but not especially attentive or easy to get a hold of. Our water and wine glasses were not consistently refilled; and when they were finally refilled, it was only after asking someone. Also, the waiter did not know how to prepare the bananas foster at the table which is a BIG DEAL. That is such a fun and tasty dessert, but to have it essentially ruined by an inadequately trained waiter is a disappointing end to an otherwise enjoyable evening."

  • "This place is a must if you are looking for an intimate meal. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and seemed to have a passion for the food as well. Another really cool aspect of Just Dinner is that it's BYOB! Finally, the food...I had the boneless short ribs. DAMN THEY WERE DELICIOUS! So so tender and the explosion of flavor with every bite shows that the chef is not just preparing food...he's creating a gastro experience!"

  • "Dinner was excellent, I had the pot roast, girlfriend had the vegetarian option. Loved the bring your own wine option, although I'm not quite sure they poured the whole bottle into our decanter...would like to see more vegetarian options on the menu, but otherwise, A+++++++."

  • "I loved the food, but if you are going to charge $100 for a dinner for two, the service has to improve. We waited 10-15 minutes between seating and ordering, 10-15 between end of appetizer and main entree, and 5 minutes from end of entree to receiving bill. I think hiring an extra person or two would solve the problem."

  • "My husband and I went to Just Dinner for a Friday night date night. Our server was beyond accommodating and gave us excellent care the entire evening. The ambiance is that of eating dinner at a friend's home; the restaurant is in an older home, very quaint. It is BYOB, which we somehow missed, but the corkage fee was a bit high at $8 a bottle. My average rating is due to the food. We ordered the quinoa stuffed chard rolls, the fish special of the night, sorbet trio dessert, and a vegetable appetizer. All of it was good, but none of it was spectacular. For the price of the entrees (around $20-$25 each), the food should be spectacular."

  • "If you simply drive on Dunlavy, you probably would miss the restaurant. Read your map and house number as you approach Just Dinner. It's a small restaurant, very warm and romantic. The food is fresh and delicious! Bring your own wine too! (There is a service fee per 750ml bottle.) The lamb shank is definitely recommended! Tender and juicy. Their sauce is special and I love it personally. We ordered crab cake as appetizer and it was good too."

  • "Every part of the meal was outstanding and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was like having a meal at a friend's house, if your friend was an elite, classically-trained chef."

  • "We went for our anniversary and it was very pleasant. Both had the Filets and I thought it was great, but my husband said "good, not great" - he is a picky eater though ;) LOVE the BYOB concept and the slow paced, non-rushed atmosphere, even though waiter was very attentive. Will be back to try something else - the lobster & crab mac appetizer was interesting and tasty, but probably wouldn't order again...very rich and we needed more stomach room for entree. Owner gave us a small scoop of homemade carmel gelato and it was yummy!"

  • "I had heard great things about "Just Dinner," but I thought the food was just o.k. and the service was poor. I had the crab cakes (dinner); there was too much salt on one of the crab cakes, although the risotto and vegetables--what there was of them--were excellent; my friend had the chicken with the same sides. Portions (other than the crab cakes) were tiny, prices were high. But the biggest problem was the overextended servers, who just had too many tables. I had to go up and ask for coffee; no one came by to offer dessert; we were just pretty much ignored. Then the waiter didn't want to separate the check into two (we just needed to know how much we each owed)."

  • "This place is great! It was our first time and it was a surprise date night for my wife. She was so euphoric when she left. Ambience was perfect, server Tony was great, food was exceptional. Will definitely be going back soon!"

  • "i spend a month at a tin in Houston on company business and dine out nearly every evening and as such sample many resteurants. Houston is blessed with many terrific places to eat but this is the best I have been to. Great menu selection, great funky atmosphere, old house in the burbs converted to a wonderful fine dining experience. Normal sized portions, be honest Houston you do serve up ridiculous sized portions for the most part. Great service, waiter very attentive, friendly and very menu savie. will be back for sure on my next rotation.A must do in Houston."

  • "I had been hearing about this restaurant from a number of different sources. It took a while to get a reservation, but it was well worth it. They only have 13 tables. They have no liquor license, so you can bring your libation of choice. We brought a special bottle of wine, and the corkage was very reasonable. They even supplied an ice bucket. The food was both interesting and delicious. The portions are also LARGE, which is unusual in places of this stature. My wife had the vegan collard green rolls and loved them. I had the Chef's signature braised short ribs and they were amazing. The portion was enough for two meals, and I am not complaining. I highly recommend this restaurant for a relaxing romantic meal."

  • "First time diner. Wonderfully quaint local family run venue in an old house. BYOB with minimal corking fee. Good size menu for such a small establishment. Appetizers and salad was great. Boneless short ribs in demi glacé was amazing. Two guests with steaks not so much. Overall great experience . Will definitely return"

  • "My S.O. and I celebrated the day of romance four days after the actual date because of work conflicts. It doesn't matter what day it is, Just Dinner will kindle that romantic feeling anytime. The food is delectable and the service was impeccable. We brought a bottle of white and a bottle of red because we were not certain about our entree choices. Turns out the red was perfect. It's such a pleasant experience! Please go."

  • "We are going to come back and give it another experience. The ambience was great but my food wasn't exceptional. i honestly expected more. I had the spaghetti consisting of garlic and anchovies , the waiter described as salty, and spicy. My wife had the short ribs that were tender and juicy and that dish was pleasing to her. All in all the experience was decent but for the price I want to be blown away."

  • "I had such high expectations given other reviews. But, I was disappointed and underwhelmed. Our appetizers came out warm, not hot. Two of the bites were actually cold. Our steaks were not cooked properly. I asked for medium well - it was medium rare and had to be sent back. My husband asked for medium rare - it was cold/rare. Dessert was good. To compensate us, they only charged us half price for the dessert. However, anywhere else would have comped dessert. Disappointed and will not be back."

  • "My husband and I decided to celebrate Valentines day a week early this year. I saw "Just Dinner" on yelp a long time ago and decided we would give it a try. I had no idea what to expect. This place blew our socks off. We LOVED everything about it. It was quite and very intimate. Food was fantastic. Service was over the top!"

  • "the manager and the bar tender watched me walk in and sit at the bar then continued to talk with each other and ignored me. After about five minutes I started to look at the manager and then at my watch hoping he would get the hint. To this he simply turned around and went and asked the hostes to come ask me if I had a reservation. If this place had not been so special to my wife and me, I would have simply told him (the manager) what I felt about his service and left with no intentions of ever returning again. This type of service is inexcusable and should never be tolerated, those two men have no idea who I am or what type of influences I have. Everyone that walks through that door should be kindly greeted and made to feel welcome."

  • "We had nice table by fireplace on a rare, very cold night. Brought our own special occasion wine (they are BYOB) and found very interesting menu selections. Boneless shirt ribs were incredible and so was the cannelloni. Cold avacado soup with hot chili oil was excellent. Portions are very large so, next time will go with another couple and order 3 entrees and 4 plates. Did not order dessert, but selections sounded delicious. Loved everything about our experience and will be back. Also server was excellent and bonus is free parking off street in lot next to restaurant."

  • "We had a great night out at Just Dinner: the food was wonderful, fresh and with imagination, the service was very nice and attentive and the setting of the restaurant favors intimacy. I love also the idea of having no wine list and be able to bring what you likes to drink (at a "real" price and not the restaurants' usual inflated prices)."

  • "Small, cozy, warm fireplace, bring your own wine, the best food ever, and great service. It is located in a house so from the outside it doesn't look like much, but inside it is just perfect for any special occasion. The majority were dressed formal, however some business casual. Very romantic ambiance, bring your own alcohol and only pay $8 service fee. Very nice, would recommend to anyone!"
