Diner Reviews
  • "I decided to take my wife somewhere different for our anniversary this year, and I'd always heard great things about John Howie and his restaurants. The things I'd heard fell utterly short of reality. The service was fantastic, the food was phenomenal. We stuffed ourselves until we couldn't eat another bite--the food was so good we would gladly of kept going if we could have. We started with the tableside prepared Caesar salad. My wife had the Filet, cooked to perfection. I tried the 42-day dry aged rib-eye steak. It was like nothing I've ever eaten before--exquisite! We shared a side of Yukon Gold potato cakes with Creme Fraische. At that point we had to tap out...no room left for dessert. Simply Amazing Dinner!"

  • "After hearing great reviews this was a disappointment. Good but not outstanding food, slow service, and boring ambiance was our impression."

  • "No other way to say it, everything was simply awesome, from the people, the food, the atmosphere, it was just perfect."

  • "Food was great, service was great, noise level: a 10 out of 10."

  • "Although I've eaten numerous time at John Howie's other exceptional restaurant, SeaStar, this was my first visit to the steakhouse. The bar had already been set high, and I'm happy to say that the steakhouse reached that standard, easily. Service, ambience, and food were all exceptional – I started in the bar with appetizers (deviled eggs ) and a drink, and then moved into the dining room. I had an amazing baseball-style top sirloin, mushrooms and twice baked potato. The dinner was very filling, so my only regret is that I didn't have room to try any of the amazing desserts. Although fairly spendy, I will certainly return to John Howie Steak in the future."

  • "A range of selections. Our steaks were cooked to perfection. Right up there with the Met!"

  • "This was the first time we had tried John Howie. We were celebrating our 20 year anniversary. The waitress suggested a combination steak in order to try two difference kinds of beef. We were glad to have tried both, but did love the Wagyu Beef the best. The roasted corn and potato cakes were delicious as well. For dessert, the salted caramel tart was delicious! All staff were so attentive and helpful throughout the dining experience. We would suggest John Howie for others who really want to enjoy a special night out."

  • "First, we had great service from all the wait staff. But the food and the price simply do not match up. We split everything and had one of the cheapest wines on the menu, but the meal came to $250 (2 people). For that, we need a knockout steak and other dishes. That didn't happen. Everything was good, but not great."

  • "We had a wonderful evening for my wife's birthday. The food was fantastic(especially the filets we had). The only thing I wish it had was a better view."

  • "It was my second time there, but this time I didn't get treated as nicely as the first time I was there. We celebrated our anniversary there that night, but the waitress didn't ask us about whether we're celebrating anything. We wore something more casual, so she probably just assumed that we aren't celebrating anything. She also treated other guests better because they dressed up. I don't think I enjoyed being treated differently, and I will not go there again. The food was just okay, definitely not special anymore. You think you would be treated fairly when you go to fancy restaurants, but unfortunately that's not the case."

  • "Our food was amazing and the staff was very attentive. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Can't wait to come back and sit in the bar! Looks like a great happy hour!"

  • "We went to John Howie for my husband's birthday with another couple this year and this restaurant did not disappoint! The service was absolutely perfect and the food was divine. The husband got a free full-size dessert of his choice which we were all able to share. The price of the food is pretty high, albeit worth it, so we were happy to have found a Groupon."

  • "While the service was tip top, my wife and I found the food to be good but not one of the greatest dining experiences ever. There are certain restaurants like SeaStar and Wild Ginger where the food is as memorable as the company. The appetizers were really great, but being a bit of a grill master myself, the steak wasn't anything amazing. Not for the $50+ we paid for each entree. The drinks were incredible and the dessert was outstanding, but the main part of the meal was just okay. If you don't cook steak yourself, then you probably would have rated it higher than this, but I expected a mouth watering experience and just got a good (not great) steak. April, our server, was probably one of the best servers we have ever had. Top marks!"

  • "Incredible food! Table side Caesar, fried bacon, best steak I've ever tasted --bone in filet-- table side banana foster! YUM! Will return when back in Seattle! Chris, our waiter...simply the best!"

  • "We wish we could recommend this restaurant for lunch but we cannot. There is a big difference between eating here for dinner and eating here for lunch. Doesn't seem like the same restaurant. Food at dinner is vastly superior although at much higher prices. Two of us had steak salads that were close to inedible. Meat in the salad was very tough. Combination with various greens was poor. Go for dinner instead when the restaurant has had delicious steaks."

  • "We met friends for lunch. The menu was ecletic. Service superb- The meal would have been one to die for, but one does not die for lunch- Appetizers of brussels sprouts/mozzarella superb. You won't find the bahn mi in China Town. It wa an experiece. The lamb burger had all the plus of lamb and no negative Everything worked and the finale of bananna fosters was a coup. SUgar fruit rum and icream- all basic sensory groups were met"

  • "Hubby and I were in Bellevue for a business trip which coincided with our anniversary. Went to Howie's and got the Wagyu beef, which was worth every penny. Also crossed off a bucket list item by getting the kopi luwak. Also, worth it. Great place, great food and ambiance."

  • "Salmon was just that - a piece of salmon on a plate - nothing else...nothing to make it appetizing - one piece of salmon for $40! Also ordered the Beechers mac n' cheese (al a carte) which was too hard - mac should have been cooked a bit longer!"

  • "I have not seen such expensive prices for steak on a menu like this, but even the moderate priced steak was definitely worth it. Amazing flavor and perfectly cooked. Everything is al la cart so it is a rather sad sight to see a piece of meat all alone on the white plate, but after all, the meat is the star at this restaurant. The other stand out was the fois gras, absolutely fabulous and worth a visit just for that."

  • "We were told this restaurant was so incredible. Went for our anniversary. It was OK, nothing spectacular. The tableside Caesar was awful. Heavy on the mustard and lemon and way to much oil instead of the traditional creaminess Caesar typically has. While the steak was good, it was definitely not work the price. The Chocolate Molten Cake was hard and dry. Best thing we had were the rolls and the veggies. The wait staff hovered way too much. It was uncomfortable"

  • "Thanks to help from the Sommelier, we bought a moderate ($68) bottle of wine called TERMES from Spain and it tasted like a very expensive re blend. We ordered the Australian WABYGU, I had zabuton cut and hubby had the NY strip. The steak was unbelievable, as was the twice baked potato, the strawberry and pea salad and just everything. We were treated like royalty. It beats the Seastar on noise level and is a cut above food wise but they are definitely my 2 favorite restaurants of all time. This is the best meal I have ever had in a restaurant or otherwise."

  • "Came here with my wife to celebrate a special milestone and turned out into an amazing experience. Everything was outstanding: food, service, ambience. They were really helpful in finding the best food for me and my pregnant wife, all the recommendations were spot on and our steaks were perfect. They really went above and beyond in creating an experience for us. Great investment of our time and money."

  • "I have been a longtime fan of Seastar in Seattle and was finally able to dine at John Howie Steak! I had the zabuton steak which was the perfect mix of tenderness & flavor! The mojito I had was just average but that was the only miss of the evening!"

  • "We were seated in the passage way/hallway just as you first come into the main seating area and it is not a very good area to sit in our opinion, too much foot traffic to/from bar and restrooms, should've asked to be seated in the main seating area. Sitting where we did just felt uncomfortable, especially since we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. Next time, we'll ask to be seated in the main area."

  • "Metropolitan Grill, Ruths Chris, Mortons, Daniels, El Gaucho (original and current) - this beats them all. Vast array of steak options on the menu as well as non-steak items. Presentation was extremely well done and not ostentatious at all. Service was fantastic will all wait staff being extremely friendly and attentive. Waiter even filled our water glasses rather than getting the person whose responsibility it was to do it."

  • "Of all the places to eat in the Seattle area, this was the right balance between elegance, exotic and comfort. The service was beyond outstanding and accompanied by an exceptional menu elegantly prepared and presented offered the most romantic, inviting experience I've had in the area, and perhaps the country. I will be returning many times and encourage my friends and colleagues to do the same."

  • "The steak was excellent, everything else was meh. Sunday night, not crowded, and we're seated in a booth in the hall (we had reservations made weeks in advance). When spending $150.00+ pp on Dinner I expect to sit in the dining room. Starters of Tempura Fried Bacon (which was ok, but more of a gimmick than anything) and the Crab Cake (very nice). Caesar was very good. The steaks were excellent, as you would expect. Sides were mixed but ultimately didn't live up to the steak. Crème Brule and coffee to close were very good. Service was acceptable, but we did wait for the check."

  • "I've asked to go to John Howie Steak for Father's Day the past two years. This year, we learned that my daughter has food allergies. The staff at John Howie Steak was extremely accomodating and worked with us to modify dishes to avoid any issues. We were extremely grateful for their willingness to work with us and make it a pleasurable experience for the whole family. This was all on top of the great food and great service that you'd expect from a great steak house."
