A word from Izakaya Den
Izakaya Den is Denver’s popular Japanese gastropub, modeled after the lively after hours establishments found throughout Japan. The restaurant is located on South Pearl Street and is the second restaurant of the Kizaki brothers, founders and owners of Sushi Den.

The menu is arranged in a tapas style, serving traditional Japanese small plates along with dishes infused with international flavors and textures. The more traditional Japanese offerings include sashimi and nigiri, sourced from daily fish shipments from around the globe, along with dumplings and noodle dishes. The global cuisine experiments with a bevy of different flavors including unique items such as Grilled Panzanella Salad (jumbo lump crab, toasted focaccia, local goat cheese, pistachios, plum wine vinaigrette), Kobe Beef Sliders (seared foie gras, pomme frittes). A gluten-free menu is also available along with a popular weekday happy hour from 5 to 6:30 pm.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We did not order, just told our waitress of a few preferences. We asked her to bring us what she thought was great. She did and indeed all that she brought was great. Not cheap but great."

  • "The new location is an architectural delight and my 22 year old daughter was very impressed by the detail as she has an artist's viewpoint. My daughter is a vegetarian so we ordered the miso eggplant and she had a few of the vege rolls and the house salad which she remarked that the dressing was very nice. We tried miso cod, and lobster dumplings. The miso eggplant was a great hit and we ordered another plate! It had great flavor. The cod was also very flavorful with a nice seared crusty exterior but may have been a touch overdone. The big mistake for me was the wagu sliders that were tragically well done which is never good in my book. Izakaya should stick to traditional dishes as the duck confit fritters were also a disappointment."

  • "The new restaurant interior design is amazing! Live bamboo plants, beautiful woodwork and lighting. Can't wait to experience the open air roof top deck this summer. Food and service are top of the line. Only negative is the noise level. It's hard to talk with others."

  • "Inventive and delicious sashimi, with considerable variety. Nice feature that you can order either sushi or sashimi versions of many foods on the menu. Having lived for over 30 years in Maryland, we're rather particular about crabs and rarely order crab cakes except at our favorite restaurants on the shore. Izakay'a's crab cakes were outstanding. The parsnip puree was an excellent accompaniment. Can't say anything about the service other than it was impeccable. We'll definitely be back."

  • "This was our 1st time to the new location. The atmosphere was awesome as was the food. Unfortunately, our waiter was not very service oriented. We had a late reservation 9:15pm, we were seated right on time but we didn't get any food until 10:15. Our waiter was just not attentive, nor helpful. Great food, poor service this time around."

  • "I didn't know they had moved because it had been years since I had been there. The food was good (of course) but the restaurant is not as pretty as it once was which is a bummer but not a show stopper."

  • "Delicious food, excellent service, beautiful decor."

  • "The food and service were both excellent! We had a wonderful table upstairs next to the window. Beautiful restaurant and a great atmosphere! Excellent food and martinis."

  • "As always- fabulous sushi, but you always think they're going to amaze! ... But no, same "specials" as always. Nevertheless, izakaya den is a denver staple."

  • "Izakaya was a very fun and tasty dining experience! The remodeled interior was very modern and cool. We went on a Friday night and it wasn't that busy. I would highly recommend the Crunchy Spicy Tuna!"

  • "When you are seated, you are given a traditional American-style menu and a Japanese menu, with options for small plates. Be adventurous. The miso eggplant and grilled whole mackerel are amazing. We had a fantastic meal."

  • "We go to this restaurant regularly. If we want just a drink and a side dish, we enjoy that. Other times, we will feast on the delicious selections. I am Japanese, and this is the only Japanese restaurant in Denver that is truly authentic. They not only serve sushi but also "tapas" or small dishes which are traditional in Japanese homes. Wonderful every time!!!!"

  • "This was my third time visiting this restaurant and the first and second visit were spot on in terms of service and food quality. This third time the food was tasty, but it took too long to receive drinks, and one of the items I ordered never came out. I tried flagging down the waiter but he was no where to be found for several long periods. Like the food, but service needed some improvement that night."

  • "We took our extended family to Izakaya Den when they were visiting denver. From moment one, we had an excellent experience. The table was ready when we arrived, the hostesses gracious and the restaurant looked urban and hopping! Our food was absolutely delicious across the board. I have not one bad thing to say! This place is wonderful!"

  • "We had an outstanding meal at Izakaya Den. The service was attentive and helpful without being overbearing. The sushi was the best I've had in Denver, as the quality of the fish was superb. The tuna just melted away. We had Banana Creme Pie for dessert, and it was fabulous. I was very pleased with dinner."

  • "Great sushi place with very creative approach to dishes as well as exceptionally high quality fish. Great Cocktails. The staff were helpful and efficient."

  • "I can't say enough good things about this place. The waiter Brian was extraordinary, the food was succulent, the options kept me wanting to come back soon and try more dishes. My 3 other dinner companions share the same opinion. The staff zealously watched over me recommending and serving only items that were safe for me considering my food allergies. The cocktails were delectable. The Onikoroshi (hope I spelled it right!) sake was delightful. I read other not so positive reviews and I have to say they are wrong (including the one in a 5280 article). Everything about my dining experience was phenomenal!"

  • "Great meal at Izakaya den...had sushi of course, but also tried the beef carpaccio as an appetizer to share and that was outstanding - melts in your mouth. Followed that up with the Hamachi collar which was a great experience and oh so tasty (thanks to Alec for steering us right). Overall just a great time."

  • "It's pricey there, no doubt, $18.50 for a salmon roll, and $20 for a local (mediocre) craft beer and a glass of house wine, but good and fun for special occasions."

  • "The sushi was incredibly fresh and delicious! I was surprised by how reasonably priced the sushi was. The drinks, on the other hand, were quite pricey. The Firecracker and New Salmon rolls were fantastic. The spicy edamame was also uniquely tasty."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary at Izakaya and found the "new" location to be amazing! The ambience was lively but not too noisy and the food and service were excellent, love the small plate offerings. We will be back and look forward to enjoying the warm weather features of the sliding roof, large open windows and patio."

  • "I have been a huge fan of Sushi Den for years after being introduced to it by a wonderful Japanese friend 'who seriously knows his sushi'! Izakaya is the sister restaurant that now has the benefit of sharing the kitchen with the original Sushi Den. The vibe is slightly 'trendier' to me than Sushi Den and I'm sure that's by design. The food is modern, creative, and to notch! Looking forward to the next time already."

  • "Food was so outstanding! Everything went very will except when I called to make a reservation, they never reserved it. But otherwise an amazing place!!!"

  • "Everything was great. Server didn't seem to want to sell us a certain bottle of sake, which we ended up enjoying very much. He wasn't listening to what I wanted in a sake and kept recommending bottle that were not neutral an were very pricy. Otherwise incredible dinner!"

  • "Ambiance is great as is the food. Sushi is exciting and looks as great as it tastes. The service was very good and the staff is very knowledgeable and accommodating. A place that makes you feel special."

  • "Been here a few times, and this time was good as usual. Only complaints are that the beet salad was really a frisee salad with a few small beets, way disappointing. Other complaint was that the seafood dynamite appetizer was mostly mushrooms. Just description complaints even though the economy behind the actual ingredients is obvious, but most people would pay a dollar or two more for a majority of the good stuff! Everything else was wonderful, great sushi, great drinks, great service. We'll probably be back."

  • "We went in early to see if we could get a table. The hostess said since we were checked in we would be seated in 30mins. So we decided to wait. If we were told an hr we would have gone somewhere else. We waited an hour and half for a table to be seated. My friend were in from another country and tired. It spoiled the whole meal. The food was great. The music was too loud and stuck in the 70's."

  • "I've been to Izakaya a number of times over the last several years, both in the new space and the old that was across the street from Sushi Den. Everytime I go, it's hands down the best sushi in Denver. I've been to most sushi places in Denver (Den, Hapa, Sasa, Kai, etc) and I can honestly say this place beats them all. The new space is so cool and hip. Great place to take a date or bring a group of friends. I recently went during brutal cold temperatures and it was a little chilly sitting in the front of the restaurant but when my date and I requested to be moved, they did so without any issues. Jacob (our server) was super accommodating too. Highly recommend it!"

  • "First time at Izakaya (long time Sushi Den fan) and it was so fabulous! My only issue was we had a reservation and I even called to request to be upstairs, away from the front door and when we arrived, they tried to seat us by the front door so we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table upstairs. It was a nice table by near the front kitchen which was unfortunate for a birthday dinner celebration, however the food was stellar and much enjoyed."

  • "Our experience at Izakaya was mixed. The menu is fairly extensive with both entrees and sushi options as well as a sizeable sake and wine list. Everything we ordered was good but a bit pricey. if you are looking for a sushi place where you can pop in to get some inexpensive sushi rolls and a sake bomber this is probably not the place. We had to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation time to be seated and there is no good waiting area if the bar is full. Our waiter seemed annoyed that we weren't ordering expensive drinks and had an attitude the rest of the time. He also brought us extra food with our appetizer that we didn't ask for. He made it sound like he was giving us some bonus food but it showed up as an extra charge on our bill."

  • "This was my fourth visit and is one of my favorite restaurants. I took a friend for her birthday. I don't know if it was because I drank tea and she ordered only one drink but I had to hunt my server down twice to get hot tea. Once, he tried to pour hot tea into ice cold tea that had been sitting there for 1/2 hour because he disappeared. Then we lost him again when it was time for dessert. After ordering over $100 worth of sushi, I sure didn't expect to be treated that way. It was a Thursday night and there were plenty of open tables so there was no excuse for this kind of service."

  • "This restaurant has a great variety a menu items as well as a solid wine list. The sushi was amazing as well as the crunchy spicy tuna appetizer. All of the appetizers looked amazing and a little unique compared to other restaurants. The atmosphere of this place is very serene with dark lighting to set the mood. I would definitely recommend this sushi restaurant as it is much better than others I've been to in Denver."

  • "We enjoyed dining at Izakaya Den as always. The food is great and the service is just outstanding. However we were a bit disappointed to be seated by the door when we had made reservations a few weeks in advance and it was a special occasion. Walk-ins were seated in preferred locations and a repeat customer with reservations was given the worst table in the house??? I guess I will have to make a specific point of asking to be seated away from the door and hallway next time."

  • "Food was great as usual. However, our server couldn't have made us feel less welcome. He obviously couldn't wait to get his table back, despite the fact no one seemed to be waiting for our table at 9:00 pm. He never offered us dessert and just dropped the check at our table. I have had much better service in the past, so hopefully it was just an anomaly."

  • "My wife and I went here to see the new location and enjoy a good helping of sushi. With our reservations, we got right in, we sat in the back and greeted promptly by our server (I do not recall his name, but he was quite pleasant). The service was quick, and our order was accurate. The only misstep was that we had ordered edamame as an "appetizer" that came out only about 2 minutes before our meal; not a huge issue, but this timing seemed a bit odd. Other than that, the food was great, the service friendly, though not overly, and we very much enjoyed the "new" Izakaya Den."
