Diner Reviews
  • "I took my family from out of town here and for days we kept reminiscing about how wonderful all the food was"
    Dined on 7/5/2014
  • "Anchored by a great wine list and a very creative menu (that changes daily), Irving Street Kitchen epitomizes what the Portland food scene is about. Yes, it's in the Pearl District and yes, it's not the cheapest place in the world, but there are plenty of great spots in PDX that fit that bill. The service was impeccable, the food prep was perfect and the overall experience for 4 adults over a long dinner was memorable. I'd do it again without hesitation. Kudos."

  • "always nice and friendly. Really good food. good atmosphere. Modern place. Great service. They are doing very well with kids. Thanks!"

  • "Great find at the last minute, we found our preferred choices limited on a Monday but were certainly not at all disappointed with our meals, drinks, wine or the friendly and attentive service, no undue pressure to rush, lamb and porchetta cooked to perfection and a starter charcuterie great too. Put this one near the top in Portland."

  • "I've been here numerous times for brunch, happy hour, and dinner. Since I've moved to the neighborhood, this is one of my favorite spots!"

  • "My family took me to this great spot for brunch. We had a separate area (they knew two children were coming and had paper on the table and crayons). The food was quite good but it took 15 minutes to order drinks; 20 minutes to get them; another 20 to start to order for very hungry children that came fairly quickly but they were finished with everything before someone came back to take the adults orders and then perhaps another 30 minutes plus, to get the food. There were a lot of people at the restaurant but far from full. It was a shame given that I very much liked my meal (but perhaps anything would have tasted good by then). If you are not hungry and want to truly dine over several hours, then it is the place. We may still go back."

  • "We had an out of town guest and went here for dinner. The food was very good, cocktails were outstanding, the service was adequate, and the must have dish, the butterscotch pudding for dessert was excellent. Also meatball appetizer when combined with a salad makes a very nice meal."

  • "We have been here a few times, amazing food, great service. If you are just at the bar, and with one other person it is great, very fun, lively. If you are seated in the dining room with a group and trying to talk, it will be challenging. The noise level is just to high in there to carry on group conversation. If you can get a booth, they are better for sound."

  • "I've been here twice for brunch and loved it both times. Highly recommend the Bloody Mary, donut starter, egg sandwich! It does get busy so try and make a reservation."

  • "The food is fantastic. We LOVE the Sat/Sun Brunch. Our favorite is the Eggs Benedict with Salmon Lox and Arugula. Wait Staff is energetic, friendly and responsible. You have got to try the Bloody Mary's. I'v been around the country and the world and, by far, theirs is the best."

  • "Love that reservations are accepted for brunch. The brunch menu was small but well rounded with some very creative dishes and more basic items for all to be able to find something. We started with coffee (yum) and their pastry sampler - so good. My sister had their version of eggs benedict that was fabulous - the hollandaise sauce was light, flavorful and done perfectly and the toast still nice and crunchy. I enjoyed a scrambled egg breakfast nacho dish that was served in a cast iron skillet - loved it. I loved the restaurant décor and will definitely be back here again soon with friends and family."

  • "I don't know how, but Irving St. Kitchen has managed to create a hip feeling restaurant heavily inspired by southern roots in Portland's Pearl District area. From milk bottle lights and mason jar table candles down to the menu (fried chicken with gravy, crawfish! and more), the delight was not just in the food but in the ambience as well. My family of three generations dined here and all loved it (from 10 to 70!). Be sure to dabble in the cocktails created by the chef, especially her Negroni recipe."

  • "As a diner I am very picky when it comes to handing out 5 star reviews. I am giving Irving St Kitchen 4 stars overall which is not to say that I was disappointed in any way. The menu has a southern tilt with many interesting choices and everyone in my party of four found something that they really wanted to try. The food is very well prepared and delicious. The atmosphere is also very nice, energetic, but not so loud that you can't have a dinner conservation. This is really a place for adults and I recommend it for date nights, anniversaries, and other special occasions as well as just a really good dinner during the week. Its a cool place."

  • "We love Irving street kitchen. The service is friendly, though sometimes a little slow. Staff is knowledgeable about menu items and seasonal as well as staple entrees are consistently good. Wine list is not extensive and is overpriced but cocktails are good."

  • "Food was great but our waiter was less than enthusiastic when it came to actually waiting on us, etc."
    Dined on 6/10/2014
  • "Food great! Service not so good....maybe because it was Easter and very busy....had a reservation and then had to wait an extra 30 minutes for them to seat us..."

  • "I've been to Irving St Kitchen a few times and the service and food has been quite good. Not so much any more. On a sunday at noon and there are empty tables, I guess I'm late to the party because others must have figured this out already. We were seated right away. No issue there. The restaurant is nice and clean. It doesn't give you any feelings of wonderment. We did enjoy the bloody mary's. I think the menu tries too hard to be original and that is great, but you must deliver. I had the hash. It was a greasy oily mess. Not an attractive dish and lackluster flavor. The Croque Monsieur which would have been fantastic if they hadn't burnt the outside. It took nearly 45 min from the time we ordered until we got our food."

  • "It was my 3 rd time to this restaurant, and always loved it. The other day the food was not that special and the service was appalling. There was 4 of us, we spent $350, and let me tell you it was NOT worth it"

  • "I've eaten here a number of times and never has a bad thing to say. I suspect this was an anomaly, but it took an hour to get served our brunch. Not ideal. Food was, as always, excellent."

  • "My husband and I dined here before a play and enjoyed each course immensely. We each started with a delicious cocktail and shared salads, starters, entrees and sides. Everything was excellent, artfully presented and prepared well. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the service. We waited for some time before our server came by to take our first order and there was a very long wait between the salad and entree courses. We will return, but hope that the service is a bit more attentive for our next visit."

  • "We eat here often. The food is great and (most important) consistent. I recommend the Salmon Eggs Benedict. Unbelievable !"

  • "The best thing I can say about this place is the bacon. My dish was underwhelming except for two delicious pieces of thick bacon. The house made donuts were good but you only got two which were relatively small for seven dollars. They can do better but they need to be willing to reduce their profit margins and invest in the ingredients and portions. "

  • "Went because a friend recommended it. Was blown away by the service, so attentive. Water glasses were never empty. I've got to know where you guys get your water bottles!!! Then food, oh the glorious bacon. Salmon Egg Bennie was a great recommendation by our server and he was right on. Great find, I've already recommended to everyone who asked me how my Portland trip was. "

  • "Food was incredible all around; really enjoyed a nice spring night outside in Portland with some really tasty Fried Chicken!"

  • "On the spendy side. The food was just ok and spending that much money I expect better. The best dish was the grilled asparagus that was a side dish to the trout. Maybe that's what you get when you go to the Pearl district - ok food at spendy prices."

  • "The food and drinks were good, however, the service was extremely slow and attention to our table needs, ordering and food service was lacking. We had a group of 10 for my daughter's 14 birthday brunch. I booked ahead on Open Table to make sure we had a special table, which worked out well. At the end of the service, I made a comment to the group about how poor and slow the service was - I suppose the waiter overheard since he came rushing out to the street after we paid to apologize and gave my daughter a free dessert. I'm not certain we will go back but I do respect that the waiter acknowledge his lack of attention to our table."

  • "Really enjoyed all the dishes we tried. We had about 10 items. The fried chicken was awesome, so was the kale salad"

  • "With a few consistent signature dishes that they do well, you can count on ISK to deliver, they tend to overdo some things, which a lot of people love...I prefer simple adept preparation of good food and try to avoid restaurants that latch onto the latest foody trends or ingredients, rather I focus on restaurants that can deliver a direct, distinctive taste focusing on one or two key ingredients; and ISK delivers on that most of the time. "

  • "Good food and service, a little pricey, but no overly so. Entree sizes were bigger than expected, so if you start with soup, salad, or some other starter, you might wanna share the main."

  • "the food here is very good - better than expected...it's a relaxed place (this is Portland, after all). There were a couple of kids there - but it's a grown up place. Service is normally very good but it was very busy on Friday night. The wine list is good (I don't know if it is notable) and they have knowledgeable staff. Nice bar at which you can eat. There is outdoor dining (haven't tried it yet) with some heaters and covering. Big place but nice booths on side which can be intimate. Fun place for a group but also good for two."

  • "We chose Irving Street Kitchen because of its reputation for excellent food to celebrate an early Mother's Day. We had a party of 9 for which we made reservations. The table was next to the bar and entryway so there was a lot of activity going around us. When we asked if there was another table in a more quiet location the hostess informed us (in quite a haughty manner) that they were completely booked for the night, but we noticed that there was a large table in the back that was not used for the whole two and half hours that we dined. The food was delicious as expected but it would have been nice if the music was more quiet as we had to practically yell to hear above the music and general din of the restaurant. Service was adequate."

  • "Our 18 year old daughter who eats like a bird said she still felt hungry after appetizer, salad, main course, sides, and dessert. The portions were so small - tri-tip steak was less than 3 oz. The food was mediocre at best and not worth the price charged. We dine out often and thought they could have done better with both portion and quality. The only saving grace was our PHENOMENAL server. "

  • "Great meal with excellent tastes. Server was training someone new which was fine but at times led to minor lags in service as she was trying to juggle responsibilities"

  • "We went from a recommendation from underthetablewithjen and it was awesome! The bloody mary's were horsey goodness. the Moroccan eggs were fantastic. A nice place to go on a Sunday and relax. The atmosphere is rustic and has a great vibe. "

  • "We booked reservations for a Saturday evening to celebrate a new baby on the way. From the moment we walked in the door, the experience was fantastic. Our server was outstanding, I wish I remembered his name. The food recommendations that he provided were spot on. I wanted a fancy drink to pair with my dinner but needed a non-alcoholic version. He again, gave another recommendation that was delicious. I would highly recommend the meatballs as an appetizer. The fried chicken almost melted in your mouth. We will definitely be back. This restaurant nailed it in every area!"

  • "We really like Irving Street Kitchen and have gone many times. Their food is consistent and usually the service is excellent. Last Friday was not the case. It wasn't completely full and the service was not very good. The food was good, but not quite to the level as in the past. I would go back again, but managers need to spend a little more time with servers. "

  • "After having a terrific evening a few weeks ago, I decided to invite a friend to join me at this restaurant. Admittedly, both of us dine out quite frequently so we tend to be a little more picky that most and although we enjoyed our food, it was a bit of a let down from the time before. Both the short ribs and the lamb met the "good but not great" bar. The pecan pie was an excellent finishing touch but not enough to elevate the whole experience to great."
