A word from Irregardless Cafe
An authentic Raleigh experience! When the Irregardless opened in 1975, it was known as the hippie, vegetarian place. In the 80s, it was the first restaurant in NC to ban smoking. Today, the Cafe is the longest operating restaurant in Raleigh with the original owner. It has changed much over the years but its core values have remained the same. It’s award winning, hand-crafted meals feature local and organic ingredients. A casual fine dining restaurant, the Irregardless offers fresh seafood, meats, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menu items - which all respect the environment. We also have a list of unique wines and craft beers as well as espressos, cappuccinos and 25 loose teas.
Live music is performed nightly. Our large stable of musicians play everything from jazz to bluegrass. These groups are listed on our website. Larger bands play on Saturday evenings for dancing.

The Irregardless Cafe is the place where friends dine regularly.

Diner Reviews
  • "It was not what I expected. Tables were crammed together. The live music was nice, but with so many tables and them being so close having a private conversation was difficult. Food was ok, and there was a variety of entrees, including vegetarian. I was a little surprised to see such a diverse selection of clothing from people in shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops, to dress pants and collared shirt, to dresses. There were even a few kids that appeared to be going to prom. The website said business casual, but it was more a little of everything."

  • "Atmosphere was lovely Waiter was excellent. We were initially seated right next to a large pole in the foot traffic aisle. Asked to move and had a better table. Menu is marked for GF dishes. Our salad was delcious and the waiter brought us GF corn muffins. . Husband ordered short rib special which was okay. Did not have a lot of flavor, was swimming in juice (not gravy) with 2 small chunks of potato, 2 small baby bok choys and a few pieces of chopped asparagus. My lamb lollipops did not have a lot of flavor, had very little aioli and the sauteed red cabbage was dried out and not very appetizing. However, the GF flourless chocolate torte served slightly warm was delicious. A nice evening, decent food but not something to rave about."

  • "I went here with my friend. We are both vegetarian. There was a jazz band playing which was great. I ordered the vegetable ravioli and my friend ordered a tofu stir fry. It was some of the best vegetarian food I've ever had. I also feel it is important to note that my non-vegetarian family has been here and loved it. They have chicken and fish dishes too. The waiters were friendly and the feeling inside the restaurant was very nice. I think my only complaint was that is was a bit loud, mind you I was there on a Saturday night and there was a band playing."

  • "Great music, good atmosphere, not blown away be the food and was actually disappointed by the Caesar salad. Short rib was pretty darn good though!"

  • "The jazz band that played was very good! Nice accompaniment to the good food. It is not just a vegetarian place anymore and the choices were limited for vegetarian/gluten free, but what i had was good."

  • "Four of us had a great evening at Irregardless. Sat outside on a beautiful evening. The staff were uniformly pleasant and attentive. The other diners filling the place seemed to be largely locals. The menu had an unusually extensive list of vegan options. In particular, the avocado-based "Vegan Sex" was excellent. The table split halfway between vegan and non-vegan options, all enjoyed. Wine selection solid and reasonably priced. A great night."

  • "My date and I were about 30 minutes early for our reservation, and we were seated promptly. The server was very polite. Our food was brought out only a few minutes after we had ordered it and the live Jazz was the cherry on top of the sundae. The only thing I didn't like was the tables for 2 guests were very close together. We could clearly hear the conversations next to us. On one side it wasn't that bad, 2 older ladies going out for a quick bite to catch up. But the other side it seemed like the couple was having one of their first dates and I didn't want to impose, but felt like I was."

  • "This was indeed one of the best restaurants we attended in the last year or so ... with so many new popping up th ein triangle area .. we were often impressed but with the selection and choice, let along the quality of the food .. both my partner and I were super happy, satisfied and will make this place part of our regular routine."

  • "This was my first time dining at Irregardless Cafe, and we will be going back ASAP! The service was fantastic, the food was AMAZING, and the live music was perfect for an evening out..not too loud! Make a reservation, as it was crowded! Also offers outdoor dining, however, we were inside in a booth, perfect! Can't say enough good things about this restaurant, I want to go back and try everything on the menu! LOVE IT!"

  • "our 2nd time here we decided to go vegan. last time I had the duck & it was very good. this time I had the vegan lasagna & my wife had the ravioli. the only drawback was while eating our pesto pizza app. they brought the main course & it felt rushed thruout. food was a little cool but still very good. will definitely give it another try."

  • "At least once every few weeks my wife and I like to treat ourselves to Irregardless. The menu has old favorites, but always has creative, new dishes that never disappoint. The ambiance is energetic with live music and the buzz of conversation. If you go, you must try the Morgan Street Chicken: amazing!"

  • "I've been to Irregardless many times, but mostly at lunch. This time I went in the evening for a business dinner. The food, atmosphere, and service were very good, as always. I particularly like that there are a lot of vegetarian entrees. My spanakopita was great. I was disappointed however to find that music is played in the evenings, making conversation across the table somewhat difficult. I won't be back in the evenings - my idea of a nice meal does not involve speaking loudly to be heard. I had no objections to the type of music being played - it's just a volume issue. Irregardless isn't that big a space, so anything other than unamplified acoustic guitar is going to seem loud."

  • "This little place isn't near much else but it's definitely worth going to. I haven't had anything yet that I didn't like! Also, they give you a free bottle of house wine (or $17 toward any alcoholic drinks) on your birthday - awesome! The flourless chocolate cake was more like a mousse, delicious but not quite what I was expecting. My husband had the spanikopita which was HUGE and delicious. I had the walnut encrusted lamb chops, it's a small portion but pretty tasty - different from what I've had before."

  • "Service was very good. Very at tentative. Food was very good especially if you are a vegetarian or vegan which I am not but do occasionally eat vegetarian, and I enjoyed my vegetarian dish. That being said, if you want an excellent veg or vegan dish, this is the place to be! Chef Arthur Gordon and staff know what the heck they are doing and their regular meat, fish dishes are excellent also. Coconut cake was fabulous. The soloist playing was not too loud so you could have a nice normal conversation and still have music and singing in the background. I do not like restaurants with the music so loud at dinner time you have to yell at each other. This musician was respectful of that. Great job Irregardless staff!!"

  • "I've always loved this small neighborhood restaurant, but they now have a band that is annoying and loud. I had a hard time hearing my fellow diners and we were on the opposite side of the restaurant. Bands should start at 9:00 in my opinion. Food was great as usual. Parking lot is very convenient."

  • "This place has real potential. The small plates should be removed from the menu, and tapas should be left to a resturaunt that executes the ideas appropriately. Next time we are moving into a situation with different expectations. Maybe we will go back for another meal; but that is the last $100.00 check for this couple. Regards, Rob Readling"

  • "As I've said before and I'll say it again, this is one of our go to restaurants in Raleigh. Whenever we are downtown Irregardless is always one of our first choices. The food and service is always top notch and this visit was no exception. My wife had the house salad and I had the humus. For dinner she had the flounder special and said it was very good. I usually have their version of the Chili Relleno and tonight was no exception. It's still one of their best dishes in my opinion. Who knows maybe one of these days I'll try something else. Did I mention this was my wife's birthday month and the free bottle of wine was just icing on the cake."

  • "Really good!! The small plate of lamb kabobs was a little pricey but delicious.! The only negative was the waitress did not offer us bread which I noticed was given to other diners. The dancing at 9:30PM was terrific. I wish there was a similar place back home in RI. The interior is really neat, sea scene, farming, the plants with tomatoes and basil etc. I would definitely recommend this to others particularly if you want to eat and stay for music to listen and dancing. Manager was very friendly as was the hostess."

  • "Went here for my Wifes birthday and had a wonderful dinner! They have an email list you can join and it entitles you to a bottle of house wine on your birthday and anniversary. They have a great menu incorporating as much local food as possible and vegitarian/vegan as well. The spanikopita was great and their warm goat cheese salad is a favorite of ours!"

  • "Live music. Good food, half of it healthy vegetarian fare, the other half for carnivores. This is the place to go back to every couple months as a regular place. Good for dates, good for bringing visitors, good for mom and dad when they are in town."

  • "A great restaurant that appeals on multiple levels: lighting, seating, atmosphere, and menu items-vegetarian, eclectic, traditional. Ordered an appetizer that was not delivered and our surly waiter seemed to be in a hurry to get us out but that has been the exception to our multiple experiences at this delightful establishment."

  • "The food was fantastic. My husband had the duck cooked exactly as ordered. I had Shepards Pie which was a large serving and tasted delicious. The bread served with the meal was very flavorful. We had a bottle of temparnillo from Portugal which opened up as time went on. Desserts at Irregardless are always wonderful. My husband had the blueberry pie and I had the Coconut cake. There was a great jazz group the evening we were there. They provided wonderful dinner music; not so loud that we had a hard time having a conversation. We sat at a table for two which was a bit too close to other tables for my liking but okay."

  • "Food is fantastic, reasonably priced with excellent specials offered. Service is quick & efficient. Music adds a lot to the experience. Only negative I have to note is the crowded tables. Very little space between tables; reminds me of a New York City restaurant where you are crammed in like sardines. It's hard to squeeze through to get to your table and once there, you are sitting so close to other diners that it borders on uncomfortable and awkward. Any chance for a romantic dining experience is squelched by the fact that you WILL be overheard if you speak loudly enough for your date to hear you across the table."

  • "I ordered shrimp and grids. The overall taste of the dish was moderate, presentation was poor. But worst of all, It was VERY greasy. Actually you could see a puddle of grease on the side of the dish."

  • "Our group of four went after work to enjoy time fine dining, music, and a good glass of wine. Our needs were met. We spent over two hours socializing. The menu offered a variety for the vegean or meat lover. The waiter was great and knowledgeable about the menu, confirming our choices as very good. The chef prepared great lamb, chicken and salmon dishes. We topped it off with the Vanilla creme brulee and flourless chocolate brownie which we shared. The music was provided by guitarist which was wonderful but a little loud. Very good ambiance and we will return for lunch and dinner."

  • "Went to irregardless for valentine's day, and it was great! Definitely would recommend this place for a special occasion. The food is the best I've ever had, the service is impeccable. Finally the atmosphere is what makes it the greatest. The live music in the background is just classy. I've been here twice and they never cease to amaze me."

  • "They know how to cook a wonderful meal at Irregardless Cafe! Customers come back because it is the best meal in town--price-wise as well. The place was packed on a Saturday night, so reservations are a must. Live Band on Sat nights as well. Wait staff was very attentive. Only drawback was that it was slightly noisy, but I have been in noisier restaurants. I would go back in a heartbeat."

  • "There are many good restaurants in the Triangle but, very few can say they are truly unique. Irregardless has a great menu that you will find nowhere else. They have a wide variety of vegetarian dishes as well as offerings for meat and fish lovers. It is the only restaurant I know that also offers at least six dinner salad options. I had the salad with goat cheese and it was delicious. Paella, the national dish of Spain is alone worth a visit. We don't usually order dessert but, my wife and I both decided to try the blueberry pie ala mode. This may have been the best blueberry pie I have ever eaten. There is a reason that Irregardless has been going strong for over 30 years in the same location. I highly recommend it."
