A word from Hy's Steak House - Waikiki
Hy's Steak House is an award winning restaurant in the heart of Waikiki. Open in 1976, Hy's has been a favorite of locals and visitors for 30 years.
Hy's specialties include Kiawe broiled USDA Prime Beef, succulent Lamb, great seafood as well as tableside preparations of many classic dishes. Hy's boasts an exquisite wine list with an emphasis on reds from the most reputable vineyards from around the world.
The ambience is Old-World, classic and very comfortable. Hy's is renown for its signature showcase steak broiler, where the steaks are expertly broiler over Kiawe wood. Kiawe is a Hawaiian hardwood that burns at a very high temperature and adds the perfect flavor to the broiled prime beef.
In Hy's library lounge there is live music nightly from 2 of Hawaii's top entertainers. Valet parking. Proper dress required.

Waiter warned us about hot plates...plates were cold. Steak tasted OK, not worth $75. Restaurant filled with Japanese tourist who were loud and boisterous, ruined our special occasion."

  • "This icon of dining in Honolulu has remained throughout the social transition from a time where gentlemen wore dinner jackets to leisure suits to casual attire to taste superb food at a classy dining club. Its traditional attire for staff remains (almost surreal) as does the midtown Manhattan quality of food and service. And then there's dessert. Bananas Foster, Strawberries Flambe, and Cherries Jubilee (to mention the traditional items) topped my list of choices. You pick. And have lots of fun. Music to enhance, entrance and entertain too."

  • "Our experience at Hy's is never a disappointment. The food is so delicious. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection and the service is out of this world. Our waiters were so helpful, patient and kind. My father in law was experiencing some pain in his leg and has a difficult time sitting for any long period of time. One of our waiters was very sympathetic and even offered him a pillow to help with his discomfort. The waiters kept our water cups filled. This is pricey restaurant, but if you want quality food and service this is the restaurant to go to. They never disappoint."

  • "Food was OK. We've had better at some other local restaurants - and for a lot less money. Ambience was OK if you're into dark wood, fake leather and a room that looks like an old school den. Overall it was OK. I won't be going back. Too many other VERY good restaurants in Hawaii for me to spend that kind of money on 'average'."

  • "After being escorted to our table, the wait staff quickly filled our water and brought the bread. We waited for someone to take our order, waiting 20 plus minutes. Eventually we think it was the floor manager came by to ask us if we were feeling ignored. We were feeling ignored so we said yes because it felt as though everyone else in our area was being attended to but us. In any case, he did take our order and we waited for our food. In general, the food was excellent. The only complaint would be about our baked potatoes. It wasn't as fluffy as it normally is but dry and hard even with the butter and sour cream we had on it. Still we would recommend going to eat here as this was not generally speaking what we normally experience."

  • "My husband enjoyed his 15 oz. prime rib, which was cooked to perfection. I loved my Manchong fish, cooked Oriental style. Both entrees were generous servings and we were able to bring home a doggie bag. The fresh green salad was very tasty with blue cheese dressing, which was lite, not heavy. We celebrated our 43rd anniversaty and we had our picture taken and enjoyed a slice of strawberry cheese cake. It was a very pleasant experience. Paul was an outstaning server."

  • "I love Hy's. been coming here since I was a kid. Wednesday was unfortunate cause there was a police incident and it just so happened to be where no cars could get out. The valet was nice enough to offer to have the cars remain and we go home in cabs. and of course subsequently come back in cabs. Or to walk home or wait it out. about a dozen or so of us waited for 4 hours. in the meantime, no one from the restaurant came to check on guests who just dined there. no offers for water, offering to seat us. in fact, they locked the doors so the car full of 70 year olds couldnt even go to the bathroom. disappointed. Not Hy's fault. but customer svc should not stop with the meal. its the aloha. $750 bucks and no bathroom. wow."

  • "What a special treat! I brought my son and his best friend, who'd just turned 15. They tried foods they usually don't eat at loved them. The steaks were superb and perfectly cooked, the service was friendly and the birthday boy was treated like royalty. They can't wait to eat here again, so I promised them I'd take them for son's birthday in September. An altogether lovely evening."

  • "While on honeymoon in Wakiki, a hotel staff member recommended that we try HYs. We are glad she did. Service and food were second to none. I ordered a delmonico and my wife ordered the Garlic Filet. Both were melt in your mouth delicious. Additionally, it was really interesting to see our steaks grilled in view ( in what is an ornate glass room that slightly protrudes into the dining area). We topped off our dining experience with a delicious table side prepared dessert......special chocolate that melted with special ingredients and then was drizzled over ice cream. Special kudos to Josh. I love fine dining, and he is perhaps the most attentive wait person that I have ever had. This is a must stop for dining in Hawaii. Aloha"

  • "Great elegant ambience. Perfect for intimate dates. They do have a kids menu but not the best restaurant to take kids to if they are not well behaved. There is a dress code for men. No tank tops. If you happen to go there in one, they may have a shirt for you. Service is great and the waiters are awesome. Our favorite app was the escargot. Dinner we went with prime rib, it was cooked perfectly and desserts are amazing as well."

  • "I frequent this restaurant atleast once a month for both Business and Pleasure and as mentioned in the title "Consistency" is key. Celebrated my friends 25th Birthday here the other night. Made these reservations the same day and was able to get confirmation easy and hassle free. The environment and feel of the restaurant is elegant but welcoming. Service was superb and I like the fact that our waiter Philip did not rush or hound us. He allowed us to just enjoy the delicious food in peace.   • "This was my 4th time. Each and every time we've dine at Hy', the food and service are excellent. I had filet mignon that was so tender it practically melts in the mouth. A tableside Caesar Salad has just the right amount of flavor and together the meat and salad are heaven on earth. My sincere recommendation is to go and enjoy this fabulous place!"

  • "Hy's is our go to steakhouse for special events, food and service are consistently great. From the cheese toast to the flaming desserts they have it all covered. I have been coming to Hy's since the restaurant opened and it looks exactly the same but that is one of its charms. Recommend for both kama'aina and for visitors if you want a great steak, you won't be disappointed."

  • "Service was impeccable, everything each of us ordered was very ono (delicious)...the monchong w/butter sauce was absolutely tasty, which is what I had...my daughter & her boyfriend had garlic steak & said it was easy to cut, so tender...the pork chop was huge...our water never went low, the service from the valet to the restaurant & back out was superb! Only thing NO TANK TOPS allowed, so my daughter's boyfriend had to borrow a shirt they have on hand, my other daughter was a little cold, but they had shawls on hand as well :)"

  • "Old World ambience, dark leather, white table cloths, excellent service. We had oysters on the half shell from BC, a wonderful foie gras with apples and dates and our entre was perfectly done medium rare filet mignon with King crab meat and bernaise sauce on baby asparagus with the best baked potato. Our wine was a Riff pinot grigio. We were pleasantly suprised when on the way out we saw a chef grilling in a glass enclosure right in the middle of the restaurant. Pretty wild but a nice touch."

  • "We live on Maui and had dinner at Hy's to celebrate my birthday. Open Table should be aware that using your service they gave us a terrible table right next to the kitchen. The waiter was unfamiliar with the menu. We had to send my husband's New York back twice. He ordered it medium and it cam out literally cold the first time. When we finally tried it it was a bad piece of meat, barely edible with a foul taste. The manager was quick to offer to replace it with a filet not another New York - we're they out of New Yorks or did they knowingly serve us a bad steak?"

  • "Started with ahi katsu roll and the ahi was over-cooked and dry. Surprisingly the dish did not include katsu sauce. My wife had the fillet and the cut and preparation were very good. I ordered the steak oscar medium rare which according to the menu and the waiter was Filet Mignon. I was surprised and disappointed when my Filet was less than half inch thick, was over-cooked and was not tender like a prime cut of meat which you would expect for the $69 price. The house made cheesecake for dessert was small and pedestrian. While the service was attentive the servers were not responsive to questions and observations around food quality. I have enjoyed Hy's on many of my trips to Hawaii over the years but this visit was disappointing."

  • "Hy's was an incredible, unexpected delight. My partner had eaten at Hy's in the 1970s, and I had never been. It was the best meal ever. The service was impeccable and attentive without being obtrusive. The staff were observant and were quick to offer any service needed. The steak melted in your mouth -- almost literally. I had the Alaskan King Crab legs -- the sweetest, tenderest I have ever had. I cannot recommend Hy's highly enough. It is our new, favorite restaurant in Waikiki."
