About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Lively
  • Hot spot
62 years of loyal customers can't be wrong. We are grateful to all of our customers, employees, and critics (...though we may not always agree!). The only way to find out the truth is with a visit. Oft imitated, never duplicated. Thank you in advance.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Open since 1949, this legendary destination is the king of San Francisco steakhouses. From luxurious carved-to-order prime rib rolled out on carts to chefs spinning salads to extra-large martinis with sidecars, every meal in the restaurant’s old-school dining room decked with ruby-hued booths is rollicking and unforgettable.

Go for the House of Prime Rib Cut—juicy, tender, and generous. Pair it with mashed potatoes and sweet creamed corn. Save room for the crème brûlée. Bonus: they let us bring our own champagne.

Service was very fast. Waiter, hostess, and dude with red scarf were very nice. Place was packed wall-to-wall with dining tables and people for a Monday. Meat wasn't cooked to medium, but it was still very good. Only 2 stalls in the restroom. Valet is very helpful and convenient.

Food is always excellent as usual. However, the service is subpar. It took our server almost 15 mins to take our order. Instead of being greeted with "How's your evening going?", we were greet with "What you like? How you like it cooked? sides? " then moved on. During serving of the salad, server offered pepper to my wife and daughter. But when my son brought up his plate, the server put down the shaker and took off ignoring my son. I had to request for water and various items multiple times. Throughout the meal, server never stopped by and asked how's the meal? He just picked up the empty plate and moved on. We've been to HoPR many times prior. My son was still hungry. Instead of offering 2nds, we had to request and the server seemed like he rolled his eyes. When he dropped off the 2nd serving, it was just the meat with nothing else. I had to request for sides as well. Throughout the evening, it felt like we were being ignored. However, the table that was next to us, the server took photos and etc. It was my birthday and special evening after booking the reservations 3 months in advance. Not once were we asked if it was any special event. Overall, we enjoyed the food, but felt like 2nd class diners.

Good place for prime rib but place is packed! Sides are ok and on the smaller portion. Too much au jus on the plate made the Yorkshire pudding soggy, will ask for it on the side next time. But overall a great place if you love prime rib!

This place is worth the drive from Sacramento! The service was top tier and the food was outstanding. The wine list was extensive as well. The menu is simple and everything was prepared perfectly. Definitely will add this to my list of favorites!

I feel the popularity of this restaurant has taken away from the enjoyment of dining here. It’s extremely loud because of how overly packed it is in there. The meal feels rushed, the servers seemed overwhelmed. Our server forgot to bring our bread out. The table next to us that was seated after us got it first! We had to ask for it. The prime rib was luke warm, and the server forgot to bring us horseradish, weird that he was unattentive with us, but not the tables besides us. I’ve been going to this restaurant for 25 years, this was the worst experience I’ve had. As hard as it is to get a reservation, I don’t think I will try to come back 😕

House of Prime Rib has always been one of our favorite restaurants — a go-to for special occasions because of the overall experience. Unfortunately, our visit yesterday fell short of the standard we’ve come to expect, even though we mentioned to our server that we’d dined there before. •No acknowledgement of our birthday celebration — we had to mention it ourselves when the check arrived. •We didn’t get to pick our own cold forks for the salad, which is always a fun tradition for our kids. •The server only brought water; we had to ask if we could order alcoholic drinks. •Overall, the service didn’t feel as warm or attentive as it usually is. This all put a bit of a damper on our dinner. Given how expensive dining here has become, we really hope the warm, thoughtful service that makes HOPR special remains consistent — it’s part of what keeps us coming back.
