Diner Reviews
  • "The Filet Mignon, which had been smoked, had an excellent flavor and was the amongst the best I'd ever had."

  • "They are always adding creative new dishes to their old standbys. Really a wonderful experience."

  • "Herbie's has a fine upscale menu, but I was in a mood for a burger and fries that night. From my corner bistro table with a great view of the Central West End, I was treated to the most excellent Balaburger plus THE best fries, bar none, in St. Louis. The staff was friendly and helpful and attentive, but not overbearing. A great choice anytime, but especially if (like me) you find yourself dining alone with a good book."

  • "This was my second time at Herbie's. I had enjoyed my first visit and decided to return. Unfortunately, this repeat experience was not as nice as a the first one. The soup du jour was overly salty, and the scallops were OK but pretty bland (the seared tuna I had the time before was much nicer). and my guest had to struggle with her filet mignon (arguably she had asked for well-done, but still). The worst part though was that in spite of the restaurant being nearly completely empty (we were in the Bistrot side and only one other table was occupied, which makes for a pretty long empty space), the service was excruciatingly slow. I'll think twice before going there a third time."

  • "I have been to herbies several times for dinner over the past few years and always loved it. This time, The food was just not like it use to be and I felt a drop in the quality and freshness of the food. Maybe it was just an off night."

  • "This is our favorite special occasion restaurant. We celebrated a birthday, and were not disappointed. Our waiter, Steve, helped make our evening special."

  • "Consist service with every visit. Broad range of wines, and the staff is very knowledgeable if you are unsure of which wine to choose. Love sitting in the bistro area, good place to people watch. A true Saint Louis gem."

  • "The shrimp and grits dinner is totally amazing! Will be returning soon."

  • "We are group that dines before attending the Fox. Rarely do we all rave about our food. This was an exception. From appetizers to dessert all coures were prepared and presented beautifully. One requested a very well done steak and another medium. The steaks in addition to being flavorful were grilled perfectly. The salmon cake served on a lemon grass skewer was delightful. Save a little room for dessert. The chocolate bites ( four to plate) (one for each of us) was the perfect ending to our evening. And our waiter was very conscience of our time. He made sure we made the opening of the show."

  • "Herbies is a great choice for entertaining out-of-town professionals to capture a taste of St. Louis Central End style. My New Yorker guest was very impressed with the experience, both restaurant and neighborhood."

  • "I love this place. The service is great and the food is awesome. The cheesecake was the best I have eaten in years. Try the Firecracker Shrimp!"

  • "My wife and I had a great time at Herbie's on Friday night with our friends. It's a relaxed atmosphere in a pretty setting. It wasn't at as crowded as it usually is so we pretty much had our side all to ourselves. A couple of us had the steak frites which were prepared to the desired mid-rare. It was a nice cut of strip steak that came with Parmesan crusted fries. It was completed with a burgundy sauce. Our wives tried the Scallop entree and the lobster mac n cheese and were both happy. The kitchen split both plates for them to share without being asked. The wine list was very approachable with a variety of price points. Overall we had a great meal and a great time."

  • "I had the filet and my fiancé had the salmon, and they were both great. The waiter recommended a cocktail for each of us, and they were great! I can't wait to go back to Herbie's the next time I'm in St. Louis. This place is now near the top of my list of favorites in the city."

  • "Had a dinner w/ family for wife's bday - excellent service - did a very good job, was on top of things - but wasn't too pushy as well. Very good - put us in quiet area where we could talk and visit - band was playing in bar - but was very quiet where we were sitting. Great dinner."

  • "Herbie's is a great restaurant. We should go more often.. Good crowd, nice vibe, absolutely excellent food and preparation. Service broke down on this visit. Time drags on and you begin to think the server forgot about you. He did forget that it was my wife's birthday which the hostess noted. However, one person does not make a restaurant and I would take any group there with confidence. Sure to impress your out of town friends and the price is reasonable. Very nice!"

  • "Herbie's is my favorite restaurant in St. Louis, hands down. It never disappoints, the food is always exquisite. It is difficult to decide what to eat because I always want the entire menu. Anything you order will be very well prepared and there is enough variety that is it suitable for groups of people with varying food tastes. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough."

  • "Between my husband and I we had soup, fries, prime rib, chicken, and cheesecake. We had the Groth Cabernet. It was our first date night in 6 months, and Herbies did not let us down! It was our first time there, and I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed my meal and overall experience that much. Memorable."

  • "I have eaten here a few times, most of which were very good experiences. The food is always great as is the service level. There have been issues with the wine the last 2 visits. Not sure what's going on, but they are 0 for 6 in regards to the quality of the wine for me as of late. Strange."

  • "I had been to Monarch on several occasions and loved it. Had not tried Herbie's, now I wondered why I waited so long. Had the kale salad and shrimp and grits which were sublime. I had been to this location when it was Balaban's, Had both the dining room and bistro experience.. I chose the Bistro again because I love sitting by the sidewalk and soaking in the CWE atmosphere. Our waiter, Josh, attended to our every need, and recommended a wonderful pinot noir which I intend to buy. He even told me where I could purchase it. All in all, I will not wait so long to return!"

  • "This is a nice neighbourhood restaurant with comfortable ambiance that allows for conversation. The mixed green salad was good though the dressing needed something to make it even better. The lobster mac 'n cheese came to the table wafting of truffle oil. It is a decadent dish with the pasta cooked beautifully, a little short on actual pieces of lobster (I had two small bites). Both dishes were large servings; actually a bit too much. I'd rather a choice of smaller portions that would allow for a multi-course meal including dessert as not everyone wants to take things home nor do all dishes lend themselves to being leftovers. Maybe offer a 3 or 4 course menu? Service was good, though the server seemed distracted sometimes."

  • "Chef Chris Ladley never disappoints. I always start my meal at Herbie's with the smoked trout salad & those wonderful fresh corn pancakes. I suppose I don't eat there often enough to tire of it. This time I tried something new - the Kale Salad with Napa Cabbage, pumpkin seeds & miso vinaigrette and it was terrific. Although the Salmon is always delicious, I was in the mood for the pasta of the day. Josh gives great service in the Bistro and I was lucky to be in his station even though I forgot to request him this time."

  • "This was a real gem, a find for me while I was in St. Louis for business. I took 7 others there and we had a wonderful time. Every dish was reported as excellent - I had the Short Rib with horseradish mashed potatoes, outstanding. The wine list was diverse and the staff knowledgable, helpful and didn't push the most expensive bottles. And they have Blanton's bourbon behind the bar - that was a very good sign."

  • "Herbie's was all around awesome. Made my reservation on OpenTable and got a call from Herbie's asking where we'd like to sit, if we had any food allergies, if we had an event to go to afterwards (which we did - symphony). Had a wonderful, relaxing dinner and out in plenty of time!!"

  • "We've been to Herbie's before and as always the experience was great. Our waiter was excellent and though busy we were seating without too long a wait. The separate vegetarian menu is great, a progressive bonus that other nice restaurants in St. Louis don't have yet. I highly recommend it!"

  • "Went there for Valentines Day and was very impressed by everything. If you go here the lobster Mac and cheese is a must. Also the prime rib was outstanding. Nice bar scene and a little loud for my liking but all around a great place!"

  • "Food, service, and atmosphere are all wonderful. Herbies will go above and beyond for you. My husband and I are foodies and place Herbies in our top two restautants when it comes to the total package: food, service, and atmophere with service making the restaurant really stand out."

  • "We have been dining at Balaban's (oops...Herbies 72) since 1973. It remains our very favorite restaurant for special occasions."

  • "Very nice place to take your date or spouse. The food was great. The cost was a little high but is what to expect on a night out eating with a table cloth! The only issue we had was the table was very small for two people. Guess that is so they can get more people inside. Use the valet parking. Well worth the money on a cold night."

  • "My significant other and I went to Herbies for an early Valentines Day dinner. Everything from the food to the service was amazing. We will for sure be going back to Herbies soon."

  • "While the service and atmosphere and attention to detail were top-notch, the food left so etching to be desired. Our mains were fine, but the sides that came with them were practically inedible. We expected more from a restaurant of that reputation."

  • "Wonderful soups and the shrimp & grits was delicious. I liked that they had a smaller size option so we could enjoy apps & dessert. The chicken was tasty but a bit pricey for the quantity and uninspired side of unseasoned/unsauced root veggies. The ambiance is lovely and the valet and coat services smooth and professional."

  • "I love dining out but I'm dieting. A shared salad and the small serving of shrimp and grits was perfection. Loved the shrimp dish. Friends had a wide variety and all loved their dishes. WE WEst Countians must remember CWE restaurants."

  • "Great service, great brunch. We went as group,,loved the frittata and flat breads! Server was great( think it was jennifer?) only complaint- needs some heat on cold days, when you sit in front window-which by the way, has great views!) We will be back!"

  • "Good meal at Herbies. Staff always attentive. We sat inside because it was so cold but we had two choices, the bistro area or main dining."

  • "The Herbie's team always delivers with superior service and wonderful food, which make for a delightful evening. Many thanks to Heidi, the friendliest of hostesses, and Gina our most excellent server. The back of the house consistently prepares scrumptious food that pairs well with the restaurant's elegant, yet casual ambience."
