Located atop the historic Meier & Frank building, Departure Restaurant and Lounge offers modern Asian cuisine with panoramic city views and global cocktails. Executive Chef Gregory Gourdet creates modern dishes using traditional ingredients and techniques from many Asian countries.   • "We were visiting Portland from the east coast and I was nervous taking my young daughter there for dinner while we were in town but I was pleasantly surprised that the service was great and they were very accomodating to her (she is four). The food was great and the view was incredible. We had a great time and I highly recommend it. The rooftop had an amazing view."

I do wish there was more information on the menu on the size of the food, as we were surprised by how little food came with our order. My party waited ages for water, for our food to be ordered, and one person didn't receive her food until 30 minutes after the others did. We waited nearly an hour for a check."

  • "Loved the vegan menu, its innovative take on foods familiar & not, attentive service, urban-chic decor & bird's-eye view from the outdoor terrace. At our table inside, inches away at the next, we saw a dish of spring-green leaves: “wok-fired” Brussels sprouts. We ordered & were pleased. 3 plates of the sweet potato tempura roll, fat & crackling with its spinach, ginger & sweet soy stuffing, would have been fine, but we tried 4 other small (medium, actually) offerings. All good. I'll be back for a dessert extravaganza sometime. All but 1 are vegan. I topped out on the Departure Banana Split: banana tempura, cherry compote, miso butterscotch, coconut-milk-based peanut brittle ice cream--food of the gods! 1 complaint: Tight 2-top spacing!"

  • "Sometimes you sacrifice quality food for a view or be part of the scene, but not at Departure. The food was exquisite. Fresh, flavorful, beautifully presented, it was hard to choose from so many options. All kinds of food preferences can be easily managed with the wide menu options. We had a reservation for a Saturday night at 8:45 and had to wait a little longer than expected for our table. It was bustling, vibrant, a bit noisy and the tables are a little close together getting in an out a bit disruptive for neighboring tables. That said, I would definitely consider going back again."

  • "Greeted and seated in a timely fashion but waited almost 15 minutes before a server approached our table. In the meantime, was sitting next to a screaming child (I feel for the parents but why just sit there and allow the screaming?). During this time a group of business men were being led around the restaurant looking like they were going to remodel it?? What made matters worse was they actually stood around our table and had a discussion which made us feel like we weren't supposed to be there or better yet, not noticed. Once our server arrived (she clearly had too many table's to attend to) she was pleasant and efficient. Our food was good and the cocktail even better. I will not be returning anytime soon."

  • "We went to Departure for my fiance's birthday. It was my first time there, but one of his favorite spots and I understand why. We had the golden curry and big eyed tuna poke and our food was unbelievable! The alcoholic drinks were just as magnificent! The view was unbelievable and the ambience was impeccable. The only downfall of our night was that the service didn't quite live up to the rest of the experience. Our waitress seemed slightly apathetic and didn't seem to enjoy working there. Aside from that it was the perfect night!"

  • "The food was phenomenal! We went for Portland Dining Month and ordered one of everything from the special menu. All of it was delicious! My one complaint was that our server wasn't exactly on top of her game. It seemed relatively busy though, so it may have been a fluke. It didn't affect my overall impression of the restaurant. We had a great time and plan on returning."

  • "We went during the Portland Dining Month 3 Course for $29. There was the two of us so we tried all the offerings. I thought the size of the entrees was appetizer portions. We had the grilled beef coulette with toasted broccoli and the crispy rockfish. The grilled beef consists of 4 slices of beef and 1 small piece of broccoli crown and the rockfish dish was 3 small pieces of deep fried fish where the breading was 60% of the dish. I am a thin person who gets easily full so believe me when I say the portions are small. So, go for the bar scene but not for the food because you might feel you were ripped off."

  • "This place is always a great choice! A great menu with a wide variety of Asian food! Beautiful presentation! For what your getting, the food is worth twice the price! The only place like this in Portland! The seating and bar area are like none I've ever seen! Very modern with a blast of class and a hint of sexy! A great place for any occasion, especially dates! All the servers wear purple dresses too! Very awesome! And the view is the best in town! A better scotch list than I've seen in any other restaurant!"

  • "Departure has become our late night dining go-to spot. The food is consistently terrific, the service is flawless, and the place vibrates with a sense of excitement. The Crazy 88 will always be my beverage of choice. I've tried to replicate it at home, with no success, so I guess I'll just keep it as a special part of dining at Departure. And this is the one and only place that has made me love Brussel Sprouts (who knew they could be so tasty!). Give me those two items and the Crispy Pork Belly and I have Departed for Heaven!"

We aren't high maintenance; we don't have special requests. Why can the servers never manage to crack a smile? It takes away from the experience I have here every time."

  • "The place is amazing and so is the service, probably the best in Portland. Iwe were diss appointed with the portion size versus the price. We expected the prices but the portions were so small we ate elsewhere after. It would also be nice to have a litte more of a selection on the menu, for both food and drink. There is more of a wine selection then the food and drinks together. Overall I would go again."

  • "Great food and visually pleasing but I hated where I was seated it wasn't comfortable and we sat at a tiny table since it was only for two. It was pretty loud in the dinning room and the music was very modern night at the roxbury like and we were so close to the other people dinning it made it pretty distracting. I will only go back if I can sit at a booth or a private room. Service was just average could get the similar service anywhere but again I do have to say the food was amazing!"

  • "Extremely crowded and noisy. No one we saw was over 35 years old. Looked like a real meet-market. Food was good but with very small portions and very slow service. Rather expensive for what you got. Took a very long time to get our car from valet."

  • "I don't even know where to begin! Since moving to Portland the only thing i have complained of has been the food. I grew up in Chicago and my taste buds have traveled the world and back. Though I love this town one thing has been lacking for me. That's flavor. This place blew my mind. Everything on every dish was combined perfectly! The service was amazing! The beverages left a lasting impression and the view.....oh my gosh the view! I can not wait to visit again!"

  • "My partner and I decided to visit Departure during Portland Dining Month--not to save money but to try new places. We typically eat out 3 to 4 times/wk. I'd heard good things about Departure's atmosphere and food, and I was generally not disappointed. A few things really rubbed me the wrong way, though, and they all related to a feeling of being rushed right from the start. Our appetizers and entrees came at an unusually fast pace, so fast that I was still eating one of the entrees when the server delivered our dessert. Seriously?!! And then all items were removed from our table immediately after the bill was paid, with no invitation to take our time. I have never felt so unwelcome, and I will not be returning."
