Welcome to CUCINA urbana, a casual Italian American Neighborhood Kitchen and Wine Shop located in the heart of Banker's Hill. The menu highlights the cuisines of various Italian regions with a distinct California ‘farm to table’ flair for which the Urban Kitchen Group has become known. Chef Joe Magnanelli is excited to preview his Italian heritage and create dishes that are fresh, simple and seasonal. Items include: antipasti, artisan pizza, pasta and piatti. Enjoy wine by the glass or visit the Wine Spectator award-winning wine shop and select a bottle from over 100 selections at retail price ($8 corkage fee applies). The space features contemporary elements and vintage artifacts creating the feel of a modern Italian kitchen combined with the history and comfort of an old rustic country farmhouse. A focus on raw, sustainable material is evident with much product coming from recycled/reclaimed local sources. Continued

  • "I had the risotto special, it was the best I have ever had. We also had the apple tart which was worth the calories. They have happy hour in the bar 4-7. Great experience. It's a beautiful lovely spot."

  • "Just discovered this great restaurant--and will definitely put this at the top of our list. We've been to both the one in Irvine Spectrum and the one in San Diego on Laurel Street. Great, imaginative cocktails, terrific wines, creative dining menu and great choices for the gluten free eaters in your family! Win-win for all! Its like a mini-vaca to Napa~"

  • "The ambiance is great and the food is mediocre. San Diegans must be easily impressed. Some items are good but nothing is GREAT. I have had a few different pizzas, the jars and pasta and tasted the burger. Not impressed by any of them. If you want a wonderful italian meal with great authentic and interesting food go to Buono Forchetta. It wasn't a good idea to go to both places in the same week since BF far outweighs this competition. Won't go back unless someone else is stuck on the idea. Happy my meal was paid for!"

  • "A great restaurant for wine lovers as well as food enthusiasts. Great selection of both in an open, casual atmosphere. Would definitely dine there again."

  • "I love Cucina Urbana. We took friends for their first time. The polenta, as always, was delicious. We ordered a board, drinks and entrees. The guys had the steak & pok chops and both loved their dishes. My friend had a pasta dish that she ate most of but said she didn't love it because it had peas. The last ime I was there I had the archtic char & loved it so I went for it again. I really should learn not to do that any more because the meal is almost always not as good the second time around. While it was still quite good, the white beans were very noticeably undercooked, which was disappointing. Overall we had a great time though and will definitely be back."

  • "My wife and I went here for my birthday and had a great time. The food was excellent and the prices very reasonable. The service was outstanding, it was obvious the staff was well trained and enjoys their job. I highly recommend this dinning experience. Be sure to make a reservation as the place seems to always be packed. Thank you for making my birthday a memorable occasion."

  • "Dinner at Cucina was the perfect combination of amazing food, simply prepared but elevated as well, and exceptional service. The wine list was great and the retail pricing makes it even better. The ambiance was perfect even for a Wednesday night. Cucina will be added to my list of fave SD spots, can't believe it took so long to go!"

  • "We loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. Very hip and fun and a great place to spend an evening with friends. Our waiter was so helpful in picking out the wine and gave us some great recommendations for food. The 4 of us shared 3 entrees and a family style salad and it was a perfect amount of food. Our favorite was the risotto.....the best we've ever had. It was the perfect dining experience and we will be back!"

  • "The way this restaurant is set below the street level reminds me of NYC. Love the vibe. Our entree's where very good, desserts a little to far from standards but I am a purist when it comes to deserts. The quality of the food was high."

  • "Love the ambiance at Cucina Urbana. The food is spectacular and the service top notch and friendly. My friend and I were celebrating our mutual birthdays and the waiter greeted us with a glass of champagne. We were later treated to a birthday treat at the end of the meal. Can't wait to go back again"

  • "There's a reason the short rib parpadelle is a favorite! It's fantastic! The beet salad & prosciutto brussel sprout pizza were amazing. Of course you should always have a vasi (we had the buratta this time) and the squash blossoms. Our server recommended a very pleasing red wine to accompany our dinner. Cucina Urbana never disappoints."

  • "Beautiful decor and lighting. Outstanding service-- I believe our server's name was Sara, and she was incredible. Sara had great recommendations, and she was attentive (but not pushy) and prompt. She knew when to be there and when to blend in. Very impressed. The pear and gorgonzola pizza was delicious and my husband also enjoyed his spicy shrimp pasta. I would definitely recommend Cucina Urbana to anyone who enjoys Italian food. We will definitely be back!"

  • "Cucina Urbana has a wonderful menu; in particular it features some spectacular appetizers--the suckling pig is memorable. They have a retail wine shop in the restaurant where you can choose a bottle paying retail prices (not the usual restaurant mark-up) and then an $8 corkage fee--a very good deal. The space is large but it's been arranged into smaller units so it doesn't seem as large as it is."

  • "We had a delightful evening after a very busy business day. We wanted to have a good meal with our partners from out of town and they were delighted with the venue choice! Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and wine list, was personable and fun to interact with. I would like to include the staff that assisted him in my praise--we enjoyed all of them! I was dismayed to see that the ricotta knudi in sage brown butter was off the appetize menu but the chef was able to deliver--thank you--everyone at the table was able to taste the little delights that I had been telling them about. We shared bites from each others menu choices and yum!"

  • "I have been going to Cucina Urbana for over 3 years and it's still one of my favorite SD restaurants. The wait staff is outstanding and the chefs are amazing!!!"

  • "Our expectations of Cucina is always high and they did not disappoint. They brought us glasses of Prosecco for our anniversary which was a really nice surprise. We ordered the squash blossoms, the arugula and heirloom, the pear gorgonzola and the spicy burnt brussels. Each item was to die for in its own way but the brussels and the blossoms were my favorite. Their spicy sauce for the brussels could be put on anything... Seriously I would have taken a jar home with me. Our server was amazing and attentive even while it was busy. Dishes came out on time and gave us a comfortable amount of space between dishes. Great experience."

  • "I have always heard great things about Open Table from friends, how convenient and how we can build up points (or something like that?) I have never tried it until now. It was super easy, convenient and the day of our event, I received a text to confirm my reservation for 9:15pm. My friends and I arrived a bit earlier than 9:15pm (around 8:45pm), and the hostess was really diligent to seat us earlier than our reservation. She didn't give us a bad attitude like some other restaurants I've experienced. We were all really impressed! The waitress was attentive, food was delicious (although lots of appetizers had the same identical bread as the bread they brought before the meal...so we were a little "breaded-out" by the time our entrees came)."

  • "Pleasant first-time discovery in Banker's Hill area. Empty at 5, full by 6:30 on a Wed. nite. Generous portions. We split the Lasagna and took some home. Roast pig appetizer was wonderful. Service was attentive and helpful. Atmosphere pleasant, but not intimate. Many tempting items on the menu--we will definitely be back. Valet parking and a shuttle to Balboa Park when Cabrillo bridge is open, probably after April 2014. They hold leftovers in refrigerated case at reception desk--a great convenience if you are going to the theater and want to pick up your food afterwards."

  • "We had a lunch celebration at Cucina Urbana and out of 6 people, only 2 had been there before. I will tell you that all of them said they will DEFINTELY be coming back for lunch and dinner. Thank you for the excellent service and tasty food."

  • "This place is terrific. The bar and dining spaces are interesting and inviting, the food choices are excellent, and extremely tasty, and the service was perfect. I also like the fact that the prices on the wine are priced at market plus a very modest "corkage" fee, which means that the cost is thus extremely reasonable compared to a typical restaurant. You folks should open one of these in San Francisco where I live."

  • "Our 1st visit here and definitely not our last! The place was full even on a Monday night. Big menu; liked the salumi/cheese options and the pizzas. The Nutella zeppole were amazing! Will return the next time we're in San Diego."

  • "Tried the three cheese grilled cheese with truffle fries and pear/gargonzola pizza. Excellent food! Finished off with the gelato/sorbet sampler - didn't care for the blood orange sorbet but the others were delicious. Loved the decorations in dining room - chalkboards with artwork, recycled wood on wall, etc."

  • "Never disappointed when dining at Cucina Urbana. The margarita Pizza is fantastic for a simple dinner. I love their approach to wine. Rather than a 3x mark up, you buy at retail and pay an $8 corking fee. We got a an amazing Albariño for under $30."

  • "I dined here with a friend for dinner and had a good time. The entire restaurant is sort of sunken below ground level — a pretty cool detail — and the inside is very well decorated. As far as the menu goes, there were a fairly good selection of pastas, pizzas, and drinks even for a vegetarian. I should mention that the menu has a pretty hefty Italian-to-English ratio, so make sure to ask your server for clarification when you need it. For food, I ordered a mushroom dish and my friend ordered the meatball pizza. Mine was good, but a tad salty. My friend enjoyed his dish. We both had the gelato sampler for dessert. Amazing! It came with four different options, all of which proved unique and tasty. Overall, this place deserves a checking out."

  • "This place is highly recommended for ANYONE. The food is exceptional and the restaurant is appropriate for any occasion, really. It's my favorite place to dine in San Diego with my significant other and also my go-to restaurant for taking out-of-town visitors. Definitely, DEFINITELY make a reservation well in advance."
