Diner Reviews
  • "From the salad to the appetizer then dinner. Our whole experience was fabulous! Special birthday night worth the drive."

  • "Had lunch on the patio overlooking La Jolla Bay. What a beautiful view. Restaurant is very pretty, and the service was very good. Started with the New England Clam Chowder, which was pasty and tasteless. The soup had very little clams or anything else. Good if you want to hang wallpaper. The Louis seafood salad was also disappointing. Rubbery shrimp that seemed like they came from the frozen food isle at Costco, only the Costco shrimp are better. Same with the crab, what little there was of it. Louis dressing was bitter and it kept repeating on me for hours, reminding me that I should have eaten somewhere else."

  • "Our second time here, and just as good as the first. Love the CRAB!!!!! Great service and view. Despite not being near the window we still had a great view. The service was friendly, informative, and quick. We all had the Red (Bering Sea) King Crab Legs. Perfect portion. One guest added a filet, prepared just right. We had the calamari appetizer, good, but if we had more belly room would prefer more. We would recommend this to just about anybody for just about any occasion. It is expensive, but, the food, ambience, and service makes up for it."

  • "Have been coming here for the past two Valentine's Days. They offer a full menu and not one of limited options. The food is amazing and we always have good service. Plus, you are right next to the ocean. What's not to like?"

  • "Great location, great service, amazing food!!! I ended up at Crab Catcher without knowing anything about it and I was happily surprised with everything. Thank you for providing me such a nice evening!!! Looking forward to go back there and have more red king crab. To die for!!!!"

  • "There were 3 specials the evening we ate there. My husband had the bone in rib eye (16oz) It was wonderfully delish. I had the trio crab, shrimp, and swordfish also very good. My dinner came with cream corn polenta. That was not my cup of tea. It tasted like under cooked doughy corn bread. We started our dinner with clam chowder. It was very good but could have been warmer. We noticed they have a nice happy hour. We will go back for that."

  • "Absurdly overpriced for mediocre food. The halibut was overwhelmed by a kind sweet corn polenta. Cioppino was overly spicy. If the restaurant is going to charge high end prices, then the quality of the food should be high end."

  • "Another delicious brunch - Crab Catcher is the place we like to go for brunch - we ordered a combination of breakfast & lunch items. Loved the delicious specials and free-flowing champagne. And you can't beat the view - it must be the best in La Jolla over looking the Cove. Thanks!"

  • "Crab Catcher is kind of an institution; it doesn't get much thought when people are interested in new and trendy spots in La Jolla. That may be fair - but Crab Catcher it is a wonderful restaurant and it fits almost any occasion - celebration, romantic dinner, kind of casual but a little sophisticated and so forth. It's kind of cool, but you still feel fine taking kids there. We had steak and seafood; both were cooked just right. Crab Catcher makes one of the better Dirty Martinis I have had in a while. The service was great and we had a wonderful table with a nice ocean view. Bonus - we have a service dog; the whole staff was wonderful and accomodating with her ... interested but not too distracting. Great dinner; thanks!"

  • "One of the best views in Southern Calif., fantastic oysters, great ambience, great wine list(mostly out of my price range)"

  • "Had a wonderful outdoor dining experience. I had the salmon which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The wait staff was attentive and welcoming. I will be back again!"

  • "my dish - Tombo Albacore was just ok. In fact, another guest at the table next to me sent it back for another dish. My wife's entrée, halibut, was very tasty. It has been years since I dined here and I was disappointed. The table we had left a lot to be desired. It was for 2 persons up against a window with a terrible view of a roof in one direction. My seat had ZERO view. This table looks like it was added to just squeeze more people into the restaurant-not a good idea. There are a lot of great restaurants in La Jolla - George's at the Cove, Marine room- in the same price category with better tasting food and views."

  • "The rowdy and uncontrolled table in the dining room, and the total lack of respect for the other 4 tables of diners was beyond belief. It ruined the entire evening when expressed disturbance by more than our table brought no relief from Management. The couple next to us said they felt like they were in "Chuckie Cheese". We were looking forward to a nice dinner in an upscale restaurant. At the end of our evening, which we cut short, a manager apoligized for not doing anything and sent us home with one comped dessert. Really? Would not recommend and would not return. The question re: noise does not give a category of TOO LOUD. It should."

  • "We ordered the Crab Bisque Soup (loved it), the Garlic and Citrus Grilled Shrimp over papardelle (loved it) and the Crab Louie Salad (not so much). I would not order the salad again. We had the paradise pie and tirimisu for dessert and both were good."

  • "Food was just average, my Hallibut was not served at the proper temperature. The service was ok, not great. I would not go back."

  • "Sunday brunch was my most recent visit, but we've enjoyed dinner in the "courtyard" space, and lunch previously. Though I didn't check the "Fit for Foodies" category, since I'm not one, I appreciate a couple of items that have exceeded my ordinary requirements. The calamari is tender and tasty. The ahi has been perfectly seared and rare. At brunch, don't miss any bread pudding that's offered! The guests in my party enjoyed the sparkling wine that flowed during brunch. My only dinner visit entailed a table in the "courtyard", well heated, on a chilly evening, and some fabulous oysters. The staff has been efficient, and accommodating. A nod to Open Table, is that the staff had taken my request for a coastal view seriously."

  • "I made a reservation with OpenTable and asked for a window table at 6:30pm on Sunday. We were sat in the front but in the for left corner so we could not see outside. Service was very good except they forgot to bring us the soup. Our server was very professional and gave us free desert. Everything was excellent except the Ahi that my husband had was over-cooked a bit. Still a beautiful night with good food and a good wine."

  • "My SO and I received a Groupon for Crab Catcher as a gift from a friend, and decided to use it for our traditional pre-Valentine's Day dinner out together. We were seated with a window view, and enjoyed looking at the lights of La Jolla. The staff was great, but the food was just good. It was a nice experience, but I would probably not end up recommending it to many friends because of the price range, and the amount of food you get for the price. Overall, I had a very nice romantic night out, but would not necessarily go back again soon."

  • "3 of us were excited to share a b-day dinner @ the Crab Catcher together. We had all been there before & had nice experiences. Making this short & sweet: Our waitress, though well versed on the menu offerings when prompted, simply failed to personalize the experience. She was basically inattentive. The worst example was her choice to deliver the 'surprise' birthday cake & candle to the table when the host of the group was not present. Considering the prices & ambiance---one would expect a higher level of service. The sea food dishes ordered, though fresh, were uninspired--- temperature inappropriate (neither hot or cold) & highly priced. We know from experience this place can do much better."

  • "I reserved a window table 2 weeks in advance for our valentine dinner. I asked her and she ask me to wait for 10 minutes and took us to a surrounded table. The host girl was so bad attitude and ask us to wait for another 45 mins in order to have a window table.!!!!! Why would I reserve and still wait for 45 mins? Why don't they give us one of the window table that is available? The service girl is so bad, I don't know how restaurant like this could hire that bad service person. I will go to forums like Yep, angislist ..... to comment about the bad things about this restaurant and recommend people not to go to this restaurant. I wish there is no star to rate it."

  • "I ordered 5 different dishes from the menu. The server didn't even bother to ask me how to serve them (Which ones go first ? Do I want them all at the same time?). I had a table for two which is pretty small and when the server brought all the dishes at the same time we had to shuffle around everything for half an hour in order to putt the dishes on the table. About food: The salmon was good, however portion was way too small for 30$. I ordered burger (medium done) and it tasted all burned. I didn't bother to ask for replacement but what got me is when I told to the server that burger was all burned he didn't even apologize. Rest of the food was just "ok". I spent 100$ there and never will be back."

  • "We went for Valentine's Day dinner. The food was just OK and certainly not with the price, especially the spiny lobster. Portions were small and serving on large plates made them look even smaller. Service was very rushed. Bread was removed. Serving dishes were removed before we were done with them. All in all, if I am going to pay this much for a nice dinner, I will go elsewhere."

  • "I had the scallops and my wife had the stuffed fish. The food was very good, but amount of it was insufficient. Price was a little high- scallops was 38.00. If either price or amount of food were improved I would consider going back. Finally, I did not like how the resturant staff handled the tip issue; they added, by hand written note, the tip to my check. i asked what the entry was and was told they automically add the tip to our bill because it was valentin's day. If we were a large group I would be ok with the procedure, but we were only two people. I consider the way they added the top in this situation to be low class and that is another reason why will not ever go back to the crab catch. Ken R."

  • "....but so-so food. The crab bisque was a very small serving and the wedge salad was the smallest wedge I've ever had, Quality of both were excellent. My wife had the Maine Lobster, which while not tasteless, was weak in flavor. My New Your steak should have been left to stand alone without the sauce. The accompanying vegetables were outstanding. We almost wondered if the Groupon coupon (which you had to present prior to ordering) might have had something to do with what we received. No complaints about the view or the service - stunning!"

  • "We had a wonderful lunch with a wonderful view. Prices are somewhat high but we had a gift card so didn't "feel the pinch." Our food ranged from average to superb: Crab Catcher BLT and Macadamia Nut wedge with lots of chocolate were fabulous. Caesar salad and clam chowder were very good but not exceptional. We will definitely go back. Service was excellent, especially once our waiter realized we are avid coffee drinkers and came around more often with the coffeepot. We arrived almost an hour earlier than expected but they still gave us a very nice table right next to the window table we had requested."

  • "While the service was great, I didn't think the seafood was outstanding. The fish fillet from the mixed grill seemed a little dry and the crab leg in the cioppino didn't seem super fresh (I think a fresh dungeness would have been a juicier choice than this crab that tasted frozen and then thawed). OK if you are using your expense account but I'm not sure i'd take my wife here."

  • "Delicious food and exquisite presentation. Had the calimari appetizer (perfectly cooked) and combo entree with the Ono which was the best I've ever had. Be prepared for sticker shock; two glasses of wine, appetizer and one meal for $100. The outside deck was nice, but the view of the ocean was more obstructed than I remember."

  • "Although the restaurant has great ambience , I did not enjoy my halibut dinner. My friend had the lobster and she loved it. I was not happy with my meal. I love halibut and this one had no taste and was dry. The service was good. the halibut is my only compliant"

  • "Came here to try the lunch menu for restaurant week. We ordered their fish dish (Tuna Tombo, I think). It was a good sized portion and the plate looked beautiful, but the fish was a bit dry and I was not crazy about the sauce. I also had the shrimp and grits appetizer and again, although beautiful, I found the sauce overpowering. I had been here before for their brunch menu and that meal was much better than the one we had during restaurant week. The views from this restaurant are spectacular and we got the best seat in the house, which was in front of the big window overlooking La Jolla Cove."
