A bustling eatery in the central eastside industrial district serving Italian inspired local, organic, seasonal, sustainable fare. clarklewis has received many honors since opening, including restaurant of the year (the Oregonian), 10 most notable new restaurants of 2004 (Wall Street Journal) and 10 hottest new restaurants of the year (msn.com) Dinner reservations are highly recommended, however most evenings we have walk-in availability on a first come first served
basis. Bar counter space is first come first served as well. Online booking available up to a party of 6.

  • "The important things that matter was spot on. The service staff was excellent, keeping my water glass full, re-folding my napkin while I left the table, and checking up on us every so often. The food quality was also top notch; it all tasted great. With that said, I was disappointed in the food portion of my pasta dish. We ordered the entree size which was not adequate enough for both my son and I. My wife ordered the NY steak and although the steak quality was fine, she had to request a new knife since it was too dull to cut the steak and even the vegetable on her plate."

  • "We went for lunch after a class and really enjoyed our meal, the service, and the location and interiors are perfect. The slight odor of woodburning ovens is delightful, especially on a rainy Portland day. We all really enjoyed our lunch and plan on returning."

The portions were good for us as we don't eat large amounts of food but not as large as we Americans have come to expect. The bar area next to us looked like a great place to get together with friends because of the long community tables. we don't get out often but I would go again if asked. "

  • "We were there to celebrate a birthday. After being seated, our server took our drink order. We were not ready to order when she returned so asked for a couple of minutes. We waited more than 10 minutes for her to come back, finally flagged down another staffer. We were virtually ignored for the remainder of our meal, as diners around us who ordered after us got their orders. Two of us were sharing an entree, it came in a single plate undivided. Empty tea glasses for 10+ minutes after requesting refills. Ordered dessert to,share, it was plunked down in front of one diner. Very disappointing, we won't be back."

  • "Clarklewis has perfect service. They never brought a plate until both of us were finished with the previous course and the plates were cleared. I didn't feel rushed like I do at some other places. They really have their timing down and know how to anticipate needs. The food was good, but nothing extraordinary. I was not happy that we were seated right next to the front door, as there were better tables available when we arrived, but such is life. I'd recommend Clarklewis and I'd love to give them another try in the near future."

  • "They have a great chef in the open kitchen. I ordered the sunchoke and mustard greens salad ($10) which was delectable. The halibut ($29) was cooked perfectly and the mushroom risotto was not heavy at all. Both items were very nicely presented. The portion was the right size for me but my husband felt it could have been larger. The water glasses were kept full and we had two very attentive servers. I was glad I could get a late reservation last minute on a Friday night. We left the restaurant at 10:30pm and were not made to feel rushed by anyone. I feel confident that this restaurant is consistently good. We will return when we want to treat ourselves."

The restaurant is naturally loud with an open kitchen and open dining. The staff was great and they had no issues in accommodating a children's request for simple pasta. Well done."

  • "I'm visiting Portland for the first time, attending a business convention. My colleague picked up this place because of some of the reviews we found on Open Table. What a great surprise. We were both very impressed from the moment we walked inside. The smells coming from the open kitchen were delicious. We were seated immediately and our waiter was friendly, knowledgable of the wine menu, and very attentive. Our food was delicious from our salads to the main course. The wine we picked up was a local Pinot Noir and simply delicious. Our bill came to less than $200 well worth it. Would come back here in a heartbeat."

  • "We ordered three dishes to be divided for the two of us. As requested they came one after the other. The kitchen had divided them for us. In our sixties, this was ample food for us. Younger folks will order more food. Our meal was very well prepared, and presented. Paper table top above a white table cloth was annoying because it overlapped oddly (not a big deal). The restaurant is in an old warehouse with garage doors along one side. Every surface is hard, the kitchen is open. Every sound is bright and reverberates. For me the background bright sharp noise is over the top and distracting from the conversation and the food. If you are young or hard of hearing, it might be fine. But the food was fabulous."

The only drawback was the loud noise level, due in part to a very large talkative party in the bar section, and because of all the hard surfaces (walls, ceiling, floor). We told our wonderful server, Karen, that we had walked to clarklewis (we just moved to downtown Portland for 6 months while our new house is being completed) and that it was our 35th anniversary. Karen and the staff of clarklewis made it a memorable night and we much appreciate it. We decided to sample the tasting/chef's menu - great choice for anyone anytime - and they all worked hard to make it a great night. Thanks everyone! We will return soon!"

  • "You can't go wrong with clarklewis - the food and atmosphere on a Saturday night were both buzzing. The ingredients were top quality and the attention to detail pretty good. The very fresh halibut was flaky and moist and served on beautifully cooked risotto and vegetables. All the meat dishes were tasty and satisfying. The desserts were unusual enough to be interesting but still comforting and tasty; Meyer lemon trifle and chocolate hazelnut mousse."

  • "Wait staff were very attentive. Food was delicious. Kitchen uses a wood oven so the place smells wonderful, and in the summer the garage style windows open up which would be cool. Be prepared for smaller than average portions, especially if you select for the pre fixe menu. A little overpriced, and quite loud. Overall experience was that this is a sweet once in a while place."

All three courses were extremely good and the lamb bolognese was a definite do over. The dessert was just right...a piece of pound cake coated with chocolate and a small scoop of delicious ice cream. ClarkLewis is becoming our go to restaurant of choice."

  • "We went with our adult children during Portland Dining Month and loved the food, beginning with an arugula salad. The main dish was supposed to be on pasta, and the server was very willing to suggest options (polenta) so the gluten-free among us could still take advantage of the Portland Dining Month pricing. The braised Cattail Creek lamb Bolognese was superb, perfectly spiced, and possibly even better on the cheesy polenta than with pasta. Two of us had to work to avoid the gluten in the cake surrounded by espresso chocolate mousse, but the rich chocolate was worth it. Portions were perfect; I left feeling satisfied but not stuffed, and the wine complemented the meal. The noise impeded the flow of conversation, though, even on Tuesday."

  • "The open kitchen is a mistake for this restaurant as good food safety practices are very lacking. Salad prep is done with bare hands as well as plating the numerous ingredients. Tasting of ingredients appears to be optional by the person preparing the salad. Cookies are arranged on serving plates with bare hands. Leftovers and extra food is placed on a central counter and left for the kitchen help and servers to eat either by fingers, grabbing a forkful or placing some on a plate. Chefs arrange food with their fingers and feel free to lick them afterwards. Salad ingredients are placed into storage containers at the end of the day with bare fingers.... no gloves or spatula... and it's okay to wipe your nose with the back of your hand."

  • "We headed to Clarklewis for our anniversary upon the recommendation of a longtime Portlander and it was everything it should have been. We were told to choose the tasting menu and it was exactly what I would tell anyone who goes there for the first time to do. The portions were generous, the service was really really good, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The dining area looks like it would be very noisy but with we never felt like it was too loud and we were able to have an intimate dinner without feeling like we were stuck in a library. We enjoyed eating a meal that was fresh and creative without being weird; while each dish was very good, the New York steak and pastas were our favorites of the night. We will definitely return!"

  • "I found clarklewis with a quick google search for farm to table restaurants in Portland. I was so pleased with everything I ordered. I am still dreaming of that lamb shank cooked to perfection. The only reason I gave ambiance 4 stars was because of the cloud of smoke that hit me as I walked in the door. But what can you do when there is an open kitchen plan next to the waiting area. Once seated it was no longer a problem. The waitstaff was knowledgeable and acutely passionate about the dishes when describing the menu. Such a lovely place, I would not hesitate to come back when celebrating in Portland again."
