Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I had a rare opportunity away from the kids. We chose to celebrate it by going to dinner at Bluestem. The atmosphere was very initimate and the service was phenomenal. The food was all about the taste -- it was delicious. Very gourmet setting and fantastic presentation."

  • "Having had brunch here before and having been favorably impressed, I thought it would be nice to celebrate my children's anniversary here (they, too, had had brunch here previously) The server was pleasant enough but I dont think very efficient as some of the food was cold and we had to remind him to bring some of the extras we had ordered. Also I had been called a couple of days before to remind me of my reservation, and was asked if there was a special occasion. I replied that we were celebrating an anniversary. On the day of the brunch, no mention or gesture for the anniversary was made. So why did they even ask? Perhaps after the reconfiguring, things will be better."

  • "Outstanding dining experience. Limited menu. Three and five course. Smaller portions with five course. Excellent preparation for every portion. Sommelier very young and did not appear to be experienced enough for position. Knew what he was serving that was paired with courses, but no depth beyond those particular wines. A venue for special occasions. Difficult to obtain reservations on weekends. Need to plan ahead well in advance."

  • "This was a culinary experience. The food was amazing. This is a restaurant for a true foodie. The meal is an event. We watched the service move like a well oiled machine. It was very impressive. The servers provide excellent attention to details."

  • "Aside from being seated at the table right next to the restroom, everything was impeccable. Next time I make a reservation, I will request to be near the windows."

  • "When I made reservations at Bluestem for my husband's 30th birthday, I had no idea that our experience would be as wonderful as it was. We both chose the five-course menu and my husband ordered the wine pairing with each course. The wait staff was attentive and very well-informed. The food was spectacular; the vegetables and meat were cooked perfectly. The sommelier was spot-on with his wine pairings. My husband chose the cheese course for dessert and he said that the chutney was not his favorite, but he still ate every bite. I would revisit Bluestem without hesitation and I look forward to doing so."

  • "Always a contender for my favorite meal of the year. This time was no exception."

  • "First time at Bluestem. Enjoyed our Sunday brunch there very much. Great selection of three distinct brunch course groups. My wife had cornbread with her meal, and I suggested that "extra" be added to my skillet mixture of eggs, sausage and veggies...and the waiter gave us an extra piece for me although it was not included in the menu. I thought it was a good addition for a "rich" skillet dish. We got there at prime time (Noon) and had to wait for our meals more than customary...but our waiter and the restaurant made up for it in the end. We look forward to taking our grown kids and their friends to this restaurant as well as coming back for a special occasion. We wanted to experience the restaurant before it was remodeled."

  • "We had a great dinner at Bluestem. They are closing for a time to remodel, so we are grateful that they weren't closed yet when we were in KC for the Big 12. I couldn't say enough about the food. We did the five course tasting and it was excellent."

  • "Food, wait staff, everything was perfect! Highly recommend."

  • "Food was fantastic. Wonderful presentation. Good wine list. Only complaint was sat at table that faced the bathroom and into the kitchen. Asked if we could sit at another table and they were full. Seems that if you spend over $250 for dinner that you would not have to be looking into the kitchen and watching the line for the bathroom."

  • "I was really impressed with the brunch. I had French Toast and my wife had the special for the day. I will be back for dinner we moved Bluestem to the top of our list."

  • "I had big expectations for Bluestem, and the restaurant not only lived up to it but far surpassed it. Our waitress was phenomenal, very knowledgable and polite. We did the 5 courses, everything was exceptional. The presentation was so beautiful. One of the best meals I'd ever had. I highly recommend Bluestem for anyone who truly appreciates a fine dining experience."

  • "This was by far the best meal I have ever had. There isn't one bad thing for me to comment on. I would only caution that it makes for an expensive night out but it was worth it. If you are looking for memorable food, top notch service and a chill scene then this is your place. Kudos to Bluestem an everyone that works there!"

  • "Always Love Bluestem but have yet to have their brunch. Got to have it last Sunday and it didn't disappoint, although I will say that I prefer the normal dinner menu over brunch. I will however qualify that we did not have the normal "Time" for a proper dining experience as we had tickets for an event, thus the normal couple hours I like to have was cut to an hour. Will try it again soon. Cheers!"

  • "Optioned for the wine pairings on this dinner. That was a great choice. The wines were matched excellently to each course and was nice to try some that I wouldn't have normally chosen."

  • "Bluestem is my new favorite restaurant! Although pricey enough to be more of a special occasion treat, I am going to have a hard time staying away. Everything we ate was outstanding, and the service was superb. We had the 5 course meal and enjoyed each course more than the next!"
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "The 5 course tasting was fantastic! Innovative yet unpretentious food, fantastic wine pairings and attentive service. Will definitely return, but this time for the 10 courses! We were somewhat worried that the level of food and service would drop with the opening of their new venture, Rye. We were wrong! Well deserved James Beard this year for sure!"

  • "We have been to Bluestem several times and our experience this weekend was probably the best. Everything from the food to the service was outstanding. We did a 5 course tasting and the 2nd course was our favorite (truffle pasta and parsnip soup). The deserts were amazing. My wife is pregnant and your staff worked with us and offered her a faux cocktail. Keep it up. This restaurant is fantastic and every one should try it."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our Wedding Anniversary at the Bluestem recently. The dining experience itself was great and so was the food. My only complaint was the noise level and the lighting coming in the windows from the businesses across the street. We were sitting near the entrance to the kitchen and could hear everything being said including the kitchen noise in general. We would strongly recommend this place for a special occasion."

  • "Always an incredible experience at Bluestem. Celebrated our 37th anniversary and couldn't have picked a better place! Food is spectacular, plating even better."
    Dined on 2/12/2014
  • "The food just wasn't that great, especially for the price! The serving sizes are "extremely" small...we basically left and went to eat again somewhere else later that night."

  • "Even though Cobly and Megan have opened an additional restaurant the Fry, but the excellent quality still resides at the Blue Steam"

  • "We absolutely loved Bluestem. The food was so unique and each bite was a combination of flavors that blew our minds. You could tell the chef was indefinitely an artist by the way everything was presented and the unique combinations. Very impressive. It was very expensive so I am not sure we will be back for a long time, but it was a very memorable experience and we do not regret spending the money for the special occasion."

  • "We had a very nice brunch at Bluestem. Our server was prompt and courteous. Our food was delicious. The restaurant had just opened when we came in, and got progressively busier (but not packed). The service was the best I've had anywhere in KC for brunch."

  • "We were seated next to the kitchen, but it wasn't surprisingly loud as I expected it to be. We ordered the five course meal. The food did not disappoint except our third course. However, my husband liked my third dish, yet I found it to be too strong although it was the milder of the two fish dishes. The parsnip soup was beyond delicious, and both of the main courses were cooked perfectly. The service was spot on. The runner even waited for my husband to return to the table before serving our dessert as he should have. Of course, the prices here are expensive-particularly the drinks. If we return, we'll do the wine pairing which we didn't do this time. It lived up to my expectations! I'd recommend at least trying it."

  • "Though I have always heard the Blue Stem is a little more expensive, it does offer a great bargain for Sunday brunch. They are special omelets, eggs benedict and the normal brunch menu items. They also have a few items that are more for lunch. I was extremely pleased with the desert which was a salted caramel apple crunch that was excellent. The coffee was great and the specialty drink with Campari, which is very sour and similar to grapefruit flavor. It was delicious. I would like to try the restaurant again next year during restaurant week, but remember that the restaurant week menu is not available on Sunday for lunch. It was still a pleasant surprise."

  • "Bluestem never disappoints. The boy and I each had the 5 course menu, plus wine pairings, and tried almost everything on the menu. Best dish of the night: parsnip soup (really!) and the sturgeon. Least favorite (still very good, mind): mackerel (too fishy, but paired with possibly the best wine of the evening)."

  • "Between 4 at the table the food was Devine overall . Soup was superior, salmon was fine/rice potato pilaf was great, banana desert was fair, the s'more like desert was excellent."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "Another Home Run. Bluestem never fails to deliver with it's amazing manipulation of basic ingredients, the flavor of each dish-- usually multifaceted-- thrills, surprises, and astounds the tastebuds. I hate barley. But I could eat Chef Colby's barley with oxtail BY THE GALLON. Cauliflower? Meh. But their cauliflower starter deserves its own star on the hollywood walk of fame. I am usually caught between tears of joy and tears of despair after the amazing dessert course has been heartily consumed. Why must it be over, I ask myself as I lick the plate clean? But after I accept the fact that one of the best dining experiences of my life has ended, I am happy. I am content. And for a moment, all is right in the world. Well, at least in mine."

  • "Attentive, expert waitstaff that moves with precision while dismantling and resetting the table; it was entertaining to watch. We enjoyed the restaurant week fare including a parsnip soup (I was still dreaming of and enjoying this entire meal the next day), a braised short rib, salmon, and an incredible assortment of ice creams and sorbets for dessert. We indulged with the wine pairing, which was an excellent match with the decadent meal. I would highly recommend bluestem for special occasion dining. I also hear there's a great brunch served on the weekend in the bar area and I look forward to trying it!"

  • "Went with my husband to Sunday brunch and had a wonderful meal. Food was excellent... wait staff checked in a little too often... Make sure you make brunch reservations a couple of days in advance, this place is popular!"
    Dined on 1/12/2014
  • "Everything was fabulous! I would not change a thing and will definitely be back! I wasn't sure if Parsnip Soup would be a good choice, but it was perfect - creamy, mild and with a surprise twist from the pomegranate seed topping. The Salmon was some of the best I have ever eaten, and was a delight to look at, as well. Dessert was Banana Walnut, which looked like a pretty pile of kind of random elements, but it was superb! Portion sizes were just right, and the service was friendly and attentive, even though it was very busy. This one is going on my 'Special Occasions' list!"

  • "We visited and selected from the restaurant week menu. Everything was well prepared but lacked the WOW factor that the regular menu has. We would recommend trying Bluestem."

  • "was there for restaurant week - was rushed, but food made up for being rushed out of our table. don't do the pairings- at $30 per diner they are expensive and you don't have time to enjoy them."

  • "We kicked off restaurant week here. Excellent choice. Hope the others can compare. The short ribs were very good. My husband's salmon was a little under cooked for his liking but he still enjoyed it."
