A word from Bluehour
Bluehour means different things to different people. In French literature it describes any time of day "of heightened emotion." In Portland it has come to mean "a great place to dine."

As the premier modern restaurant in the Pearl District, Bluehour opened its doors in 2000, with what Gourmet Magazine describes as, "the most sophisticated, contemporary food in town." Guests choose between the elegant dining room or the casual café and bar.

Simple, delicious and classic describes the Mediterranean cuisine we create in the Bluehour kitchen each night. The menu is printed daily, but Bluehour standards remain, like the pillowy potato gnocchi with black truffle and the perfectly seared, bacon wrapped sea scallops. Our cheese cart is among the finest on the West Coast, featuring regional and international artisan cheeses.

AND they will cater to my husband's need for low salt food -- cooking fish, burgers, french fries etc without any salt. All too many restaurants have everything already so salty and pre-cooked that they cannot be flexible. They always have a couple of fresh fish items on the menu at night, at least one for lunch, several seasonal salads, several pastas that can be appetizers or entrees, yummy desserts. Haven't tried the cheeses because of their salt content but they look fabulous. Expensive but not silly. The other night we shared a delightful burrata salad and each had perfectly cooked black cod with tiny red quinoa. Wonderful."

I had a wonderful salad with strawberries in it and the best duck breast with potatoes croquettes. It was like candy! Others had the lamb and lamb ragout gnocchi. My friends loved the Italian red they drank but I stayed with sparkling water. We were too satisfied for dessert."

  • "We've been going to Bluehour for years. It's remained a hot spot for drinks and / or for dinner. But our recent visit has turned us away... The staff was accommodating we had multiple friends join us through out the evening and each person was welcomed by the staff and service was terrific as usual. However our dinner, the halibut, came out smelling fishy and I wish I hadn't eaten it but I did. I regretted it all night - if you know what I mean. The desserts - truly were awful. I'm not sure if their chef was out on holiday or what has changed but it wasn't the BlueHour we're use to. "

  • "Blue hour is always one of our favorites and go for all occasions. Food is usually and consistently great. However, on this one occasion we all ordered the ribeye steaks (4) medium rare. They all came well done. We returned them and got back rare to almost raw.. Disappointing. Had friends that had never been and wanted to show off one of our favorite places. The service is always excellent and good to see the same people. He was very quick to try to correct the mistake. We understood the fault was with the kitchen. We will of course come back but hope this wouldn't happen again-especially with steak..... Sacralidge."

Our waiter wasn't very prompt (I had to keep on asking for ice tea since I do not drink. But my two companions didn't have any problem getting more wine). Everything took an extremely long time to come out - even simple happy hour bar food (were there over 2 hrs for a simple dinner without drinks). Ordered dinner as well as bar food for appetizers. I had the roasted Lamb (excellent) and my wife had the halibut (also excellent, if small). We shared the roasted cauliflower and arugula salad (excellent).   • "The food was tasty, but where was it on our plates? The scallops were cut so small you could not discern which ones were scallop or gnocchi. Good thing we decided to get the halibut plate to split. The halibut was cooked good but the two strands of leek and a fingerling potato cut into slices were not a dish complete. Thank the food Gods that there was an asparagus or two to munch on. We were surprised and grateful for the free dessert artfully displayed and tasty. Our waiter was exceptional and made our dinner enjoyable."

  • "In spite of it's reputation, I had heard Bluehour was noisy so never went ... until this weekend. We were there on a Fri night and the restaurant was frankly one of the quieter ones I've been to in Portland. It was about 1/2 full and they've done a nice job with curtains to create intimacy. Meanwhile, the cocktails were smooth and delicious, and our meals were excellent. Not cheap, when you have wine, appetizers, cocktails and dessert, but is a nice splurge and we had a lovely time. The service was extremely friendly and accommodating which we also appreciated."

  • "I understand that nice restaurants have smaller portions, but this was ridiculously small. My husband and I both got appetizers and entrees and were both still pretty hungry. I got the pan fried osyters and they were amazing. He got the lamb leg for $31 mind you, and there was less food on his plate than my appetizer. It was delicious food and great service, but there are other French places in the area with more unique food and more bang for your buck."

  • "My husband and I recently moved to the Pearl District and have been to a number of restaurants there. We'd never been to Bluehour, though. So, when we wanted to celebrate a special occasion, we decided to give it a try. For not much more money than most neighborhood restaurants, it turned out to have a much more elegant, special feel. The food was excellent, and it was matched by superb service. I love the variety of restaurants in this part of town, but the quality and service here felt a notch above many. It was lively feeling without being so noisy we couldn't have a conversation."

  • "We started with cocktails, which were very well prepared. For appetizers, we shared a dozen oysters, which were perfect. My colleague had the foie gras, and I had the cauliflower salad. We raved about them. For entrees, we had the black cod and the salmon. Both were cooked perfectly with nice flavor components. Prior to dessert, we had a cheese course of mild cheeses, which were all fantastic. For dessert, we had a sorbet and the creme brulee. Overall, the meal was very satisfying and provided an excellent venue for a business dinner."

On a Thursday evening we found the service to be seriously sub-par for a restaurant that wants to be considered a contender on the Portland fine dining scene. Cocktail glasses remained empty and on the table until we were half way through the entree. After the diner was served no one stopped by to see if everything was to our liking or if there was anything we needed. The food was fine but hardly outstanding. So would we be likely to come again or recommend Bluehour? Probably not. With so many great restaurants in this city why would you settle for just okay when you're hoping for great?"
