A word from Blue Bird Bistro
The idea behind blue bird bistro is a simple one. Actually, it's more an ideal than an idea. An ideal that starts with a passion for organic food and our desire to share its benefits. And a commitment to work closely with local farmers who share in these ideals. The result is an eclectic mix of flavorful, delicious organic fare, ideal for the discerning diner. Diner Reviews
  • "Delicious flavors and fun vibe. An absolute MUST for lunch."

  • "Saw good reviews and was excited to try it. The restaurant didn't open on time. Food was luke warm when served, and not that good. Experienced it once, don't need to go back."

  • "Prices are all over the place and don't reflect the quality or proportions. $8 for decent meatloaf and then $39 for a mediocre at best 6-7 oz. beef tenderloin. Not worth the price at all."

  • "Enjoy paying entree prices for starter-sized serving? This is your spot."

  • "We made a reservation for a special occasion brunch. It took 15 minutes for someone to come to our table and take drink orders, another 15 to take our meal orders and an additional 45 to receive our food. Brunch overall took 2 hours, including 20 minutes to get our bill after I complained to the manager. Servers were rude, we were told several times to "be patient." Many of our orders were incorrect, we were given extra dishes and drinks no one ordered and had to pay for them. The food is very good here but after an experience like that, I won't be taking my business there again."

  • "We had a very tasty brunch- not easily found in KC."

  • "This is like eating with your best friends the menu is unusual but tempting. And the chocolate pie is not to be missed"

  • "I'd eaten here before for breakfast and they had the best French toast I've ever tasted. This time I had a Bison burger with mashed potatoes. It was very tasty although the portions are a little on the small side. I didn't leave with a full stomach, but I'd go here again because the food is so good. My biggest complaint is the menu I was given didn't match what was on their website."

  • "I had heard a number of great reviews about the food, and was excited to finally try it. I was rather unimpressed. I had a BBQ tofu sandwich, and the BBQ sauce was way too sweet and overpowering. The bun was soggy from all of the BBQ sauce. I only had about three bites of my meal before calling it a loss. It is a unique place and would possibly go back...but only for drinks."

  • "I love the Bluebird Cafe! My husband and I found it a few months ago and were excited for the new find and the area in which is surrounds. What a great location! I have had fun introducing it to family and friends for a special lunch."

  • "This was my first visit to the Blue Bird, and I'll definitely plan on returning for a special dinner."

  • "We always liked this bistrro, but hadn't been there for a while. Nothing had changed--great physical plant--beautiful old mosaid tile floor in front room--original with building I think--cozy dining areas. The food remains elegant and delicious. One of our entrees was vegetarian--a baked sweet potato stuffed with sauteed veggies and it was wonerful. We were dining before an event at the Kauffman Center--made early reservations and wanted to finish our dinner by 6:30P. Our arrival was 5:30 P. We had excellent service, excellent meal and all completed in less than the hour we allotted. We think this is one of the best places to eat in KC--dinner, lunch or breakfast."

  • "I had the meatballs...which literally was just 4 small meatballs on a plate. They were actually pretty ok. The only thing it came with was some "greens" which ended up being a pile of what I can only describe as inedible weeds on the plate. Was still starving after our meal! My advice if you go is to have a snack before hand, or order 2 dishes."

  • "Food was sub par for expectations due to ok service and kind of terrible food. The ravioli was one big bowl of soggy mush. The icing on the cake though was when calling the next day after leaving our debit card there- we were told twice 'they would look for it when they had time'. They agreed to call twice but NEVER did- not the next day or even same week. When we asked for the manager we were told 'she's gone'. Will never go back and would not recommend this to anyone as I don't want anyone to do business with issues like this."

  • "Been awhile since I have been to Blue Bird and I have to say that I was disappointed. My pork chop was well cooked, but about 75+% fat and bone and lacked flavor. My wife's steak was a bit better, but nothing stood out. Flavors were all really subdued and under seasoned. The menu might have offered clues to the lack of enthusiasm by stating that a few items came with "cheese", not Appenzeller, or emmentaler, or a manchego, but just "cheese". It was Valentines Day, so maybe they rushed the menu, but twas a flop, especially with my expectations high."

  • "Eclectic feel to this restaurant. Historical overtones with roots in the city with local produce, growers and real attention to the "substance of food." Fun, off-beat area to spend a bit of time in near downtown KC and the Kaufman Performing Arts building."

  • "The Blue Bird for Sunday brunch is simply the best in KC metro area!"

  • "We normally go to Blue Bird Bistro for brunch, which is excellent. But we decided to try it for Valentine's Day dinner. I was excited that they had Boulevard Chocolate Ale on tap. The food however, was a big disappointment. I had the meatballs which were mediocre at best. My husband had the vegan spinach ravioli and it was terrible. It makes me wonder if they had even tasted it before serving it. Their brunches have been so good every time we've gone, but dinner paled in comparison."

  • "Shared two entrees with my wife. She had the bison and I had the green curry. We both liked the bison the best. Food was lukewarm but it was Valentine's and very busy. Waiter was quick but never checked back with us but again he was very busy. I wanted to love this place but it was only average and out of the way for me."

  • "Understaffed for Valentines Day? Food was off the hook. Subtle seasoning. Fresh agreements. Good wine pairings."

  • "I've frequently chosen this restaurant to take out of towners so they can see the Kansas City Farm to Table dining movement. They serve very fresh ingredients and there are usually enough veggies on the plate to make even a vegetable lover like me happy. However, this is the third time that some aspect of the meal was only lukewarm. In this case, it was the sweet potato soup. Usually a great place but I think on big nights (this was Valentine's) the kitchen can get overwhelmed and place things on the plate at various times, making it difficult for everything to be hot at the same time. I could have asked for the soup to be taken back; I'm sure there would have been no problem in doing so. Only one down note. It's still one of my favorites."
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The portions were tasty, but skimpy (I.E. only about 3/4 cup of the soup and 1 small slice of too-hard bread w/ bruschetta) . The building leans a bit too much on the shabby side of shabby chic. The staff was courteous and cordial."

  • "A friend and I took our two daughters (8 years old) here for brunch before a Nutcracker performance and what an experience! The food was amazing (sweet potato and granola pancakes and ciabatta french toast were both wonderful!). This restaurant is in a quaint little neighborhood and a very short distance to the Kauffman Center. We were sat in the back of the restaurant which was so beautiful with brick walls. The service was amazing, especially with our two little giggly girls! We'll definitely be back, especially each year before our annual Nutcracker girls day!"

  • "We did a 3 course lunch and the squash soup was the best I've ever had! I had the meatballs, which seemed a little undercooked for my taste. I want to come back for the sweet potato pancake breakfast. The whole meal was so healthy and full of flavor."

  • "It's great to have an organic dining option with lots of locally-sourced products to choose from. The food was wonderful and the service was smooth despite it being busy. The table was awkward and not the most comfortable for a long leisurely dinner but it fit the charm of the place."

  • "In a city with lots of wonderful dining choices, Blue Bird Bistro stands out. The menu always has several items we would like to order, and ingredients are fresh and locally sourced. This time we ordered from the Restaurant Week menu, and everything we picked was delicious. Our waiter was outstanding, too -- personable, knowledgeable, and helpful."

  • "This past Saturday night was my wife's first time at the restaurant and she absolutely loved it. She raved about the campo lindo chicken dish and my salmon was excellent. The neighborhood is unique and it is great to get out of suburbia for a wonderful dinner. Our server was professional and took good care of us."

  • "Went here for lunch with the family as part of KCRW. We weren't sure what to expect, but it looked interesting so we gave it a try. Everything was nice and flavorful. For a vegetarian restaurant, they really know how to prepare a flavorful and tender cut of meat. The Bahn Mi sandwich is great!"

  • "You don't have to worry about where your food is coming from here. All local organic and seasonal. Great wine list wish a fixed percent markup. Fabulous and friendly staff. Expect a slow paced dinner, very European style."

  • "Meatballs were amazing and so was orange cake. Incredible service"
    Dined on 1/22/2014
  • "Restaurant week selections were nicely varied and well prepared. The gluten free pear cake was my favorite dessert. The flavors were beautifully dense for the season, yet not overpowering. The pasta bowl with sweet potatoes also had just the right portion, seasonings and sauce to fill, but not overly stuff me."

  • "I chose this restaurant because I love the neighborhood setting and the menu. I'd been before, always for lunch/brunch and that was the case this time. I chose three items from the Restaurant Week Menu--the meatball entree was delicious--the marinara sauce especially so. The salmon crostini was a bit tough, but the carrot cake with chocolate sauce a pleasant surprise. My husband had the traditional eggs benedict which was flavorful but mild. The servers were subdued and attentive, The noise level was a bother, however. It was way too loud for easy conversation. Talk is fine; it was the music that reverberated within the stone walls of the room. I chose the Wild Horse Chardonnay--excellent!"

  • "If you are looking for a local, healthy, AND delicious dining experience, stop by Blue Bird. And if you really enjoy your meal, you've just experienced the tip of the iceberg because the menu changes constantly."

  • "I went to the blue bird bistro for the first time during Restaurant Week. I had a squash soup that was just ok, a brisket that was phenomenal, and a sweet potato bread pudding that was lackluster... The ambience was really nice, and our server was great - very attentive (but not overly so) and personable. So overall, it was a good dining experience."

  • "I came here with a friend for restaurant week. We had lunch, and I got the three-course meal, trying the hummus and pita, bahn mi, and sweet potato pancake. The hummus was great, and although I didn't love the bahn mi, it was fun to try. The sweet potato pancake for dessert was delicious. Overall, the ambiance was fun and inviting, and I would definitely come back to try something else on the menu!"

  • "Blue bird has an amazing atmosphere, especially for the Weds night table. The food was magnificent! All locally sourced, well flavored and beautifully presented. Our hosted was the most gracious and personable business owner I’ve met in years. It’s obvious that she loves food, people and wine. They have a great 4 course meal option on Wed nights with vegetarian dishes available all the time—how cool is that? If you care about good food, passionate about the environment or like to talk, this is the place for you."
