A word from BLD

Within its sunny space BLD (breakfast, lunch, dinner) is both a popular neighborhood spot as well as a great destination restaurant. This latest venture of husband and wife team Neal and Amy Knoll Fraser with partner Richard Drapkin, is another successful collaboration of the talented team from Grace Restaurant just down the street. At BLD diners can remain comfortable all day long in a friendly, upscale café atmosphere. The enticing space and the service are approachable from the moment the doors open early in the morning until they finally close late at night. BLD has become the go-to spot for all day gourmet comfort food. House-made pastries, salads, sandwiches, and more feature seasonal ingredients. Over-eager, friendly but fake, too keen to take orders, whip plates away and bring the check - one felt rushed and pressed all the time, as though in canteen, rather than allowed to relax and enjoy the meal. Food was OK. No reason to go back."

  • "I love this restaurant for brunch in particular - You feel like you've left LA when you're here. My only gripe is that the wait is often quite long- even when you have a reservation. I think we waited about 35 minutes on a 5-person reservation we made days in advance. Nonetheless, I am a repeat customer and the waitstaff and management are great and attentive once you're seated. In fairness there was a MOB of walk-in business standing out front on the day that we most recently went, and the hostess was definitely stressing."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to BLD for dinner on a Saturday night around 10 pm and surprisingly, the restaurant wasn't too crowded. Our server Andrew was great in helping us with our food and wine selection. The food itself was quite unique compared to other restaurants. I ordered the lamb burger which came with feta, cucumber yogurt sauce, arugula and red onions. It was delicious! My boyfriend got the lamb on the bone which was so flavorful and tender. I know the restaurant is known for their breakfast food, so if their dinner food was that good, I can't imagine how amazing breakfast must be! We will definitely have to go back!"

  • "We were in the area and liked the look of the menu. The restaurant was nice and unassuming but still hip but note too hip that it was annoying. The noise level was low which was great. Lots of great vegan and meat options. We started with a vegan pate that was sensational; nice and smoky and creamy. My husband built his own with hemp seed encrusted tofu and I had the fried chicken and waffles. Both were delicious. The chicken was crispy but not greasy. The waffle wasn't warm like it should have been but it was still tasty. Brussel sprouts are nicely braised and seasoned. Great yellow layer cake w bittersweet frosting for dessert. With beers and tip around $100 not bad."

  • "Nice looking restaurant, but unprepared for Valentine. Foods ran out, the worst part is the servers. This was my third times come back but I never like the service, servers in this restaurant have so much attitude, you can tell by the way they serve even though they try to polite say thank you etc. I come back because it's a nice looking restaurant and close by my house other than that I wouldn't recommend to my friends."

  • "Disappointment isn't listed on the menu but I assure you, it's in no short supply at BLD. I went for Valentine's Day, excited for a tasting menu and a romantic evening. My first course was a sardine that had so many bones in it, I gave up after about two bites. The main course was an overcooked, chewy steak with the grittiest grits I've had (not an endorsement). Giving credit where it's due, the desert, a salted caramel tart, was delicious. Moving on to the service, empty glasses were not uncommon. We were checked in on maybe once during the entire duration of our meal and I practically had to flag someone down to get our check. For $45 a person, there are plenty of better places to go."

  • "Unlike a lot of other upscale eateries, BLD doesn't gouge you on V Day, instead offering a very reasonable $45 3 course prix fixe dinner with $25 extra for wine pairings. All the food was really well done, but portions were small and I would venture that bigger eaters would probably leave this dinner hungry. In the cuisine arena, BLD always satisfies with high quality, fresh ingredients and innovative choices. Service is not great. When a restaurant is offering wines to go specifically with the dish, the wine needs to arrive at the same time as the plate, not 15 minutes later. That was really a problem. Hence the 2 start service rating."

  • "This was my second visit to BLD and the ricotta blueberry pancake and chorizo egg scramble did not disappoint. the only disAppointment was the service. after getting our food we asked for ketchup three different times to get it to our tAble, asked for refill on the coffee twice but never got it, and asked for extra plates twice before they finally brought it over. The waiters and busboys were both equally bad."

  • "I think what got the most raves were BLD's olive oil drizzled potatoes. I ordered the ricotta and blueberry pancakes, which were pretty disappointing (way too dense, would have been much better with cottage cheese or just straight up with no ricotta, and the blueberries were sour and added nothing). My boyfriend ordered the chorizo potatoes which were oozing grease and had not even the slightest porky tinge (where was the chorizo!?!!?). My friend ordered the wild mushroom omelette and had some things to say about the cheese - mainly that it was "all over everything - and hid the other components of the omelette). Hmm... I will probably not be coming back here, where the hostess is rude and the bathroom way too dark."

  • "I've been wanting to try BLD out for years now and finally decided to give it try on the last day of dine la. My husband and I decided to try their dine la menu. The food was great, but the portions were so small. We both had the chicken breast as our main course and even though we added an extra appetizer of mussels, we were still hungry when we got home. They sat all the party of 2 guests so close together that you can hear conversations from the left and right side of you. I personally do not like that type of seating. Overall, the food and service was great...I would definitely return to try their breakfast."

  • "Out of my four restaurant week experiences this year, BLD was by far the best menu and deal. Our server was knowledgeable and sophisticated, yet accessible and warm. The runner was a bit brusk with one of my guests, but the rest of the staff was gracious and appropriate. The food... is divine. All proteins are cooked to perfection, the balance of flavors and textures is on the exciting side of thoughtful. I savored every bite of that spicy octopus frisee appetizer and light buttery scallop entree. I'm not a dessert person, but the toffee pudding with candied apples kept the ball aloft. Bien fait, BLD! I'll be back."

  • "I went to bld for the first time this week because of their dineLA participation and menu offering. Both my boyfriend and I ventured into the dineLA menu with much success. I enjoyed a very delicious and surprising delicate chard octopus salad with a flavorful romesco sauce for the startestarter. My boyfriend savored the sweet and meaty bacon wrapped dates on a crunchy crostini over delicious walnut pesto. For the main, he had the winner of the evening, the seared scallops were perfectly cooked - allowing for the delicate flavors & textures to come through. I had the tender braised lamb on dense polenta, baby carrots and spinach. We finishedthe meal with a wonderful tart froyo to balance a sticky toffee pudding and caramelized apples."

  • "It's been over a year since I've been to BLD. My reason for going this time was the recent addition to my family a 4 month old puppy (Brando). I remember that BLD was pet friendly so the two of us sat outside under a heater with our dining companion in the fresh January evening's air. Our DineLA treats were served promptly and were delicious. Our waiter was extremely thoughtful and attentive as were the busers."

  • "Had the following courses: 1) Prosciutto Wrapped Dates: I don't really like dates, but I wanted to try it anyways. No regrets! Very yummy, and the right balance of savory and sweet. The baguette was crunchy, and the walnut pesto sauce was very tasty. 2) Braised Lamb: Everything-- the lamb, carrots, and spinach-- except the polenta cake, were good. The lamb could have done a bit better with stronger seasoning or flavor, but it was delicious. However, the polenta cake was ridiculously salty! >:( I ended up leaving most of it uneaten. Hmph. 3) Cinnamon Beignets: Cinnamony goodness :) Tasted a lot like doughnuts, but very good doughnuts. Loved the caramel sauce and fresh cream-- not overly sweet, thank goodness. Left pretty happy :)"

  • "The food here is amazing, I got salmon eggs benedict while my friends got different types of eggs benedict. One of my friends got their fried egg sandwich, and all of the food was just so tasty. The eggs benedict comes with your choice of: home fries, chorizo potatoes, or potatoes. I got the chorizo potatoes and the taste of the chorizo in it made the potatoes. We also ordered a round of coffee for everyone and that was good as well."

Although I ordered from that menu, I did get a peek at their regular menu and I already know that I will be returning very soon. The ambiance is nice, the understated elegance allows you to not feel bad about coming in to dine in your casual clothing. Service was acceptable, establishment was pristine and the food was delicious! If you're in the area, check it out."

  • "This was not my first time trying Peruvian food, but it was my first time trying Peruvian food of this caliber. This Peruvian izakaya accomplishes wondrous magic with the two cultures. The pairings of food were amazingly delicious and I would definitely be back for seconds, thirds and so on. Even the drinks were out of this world!"

  • "The service sucked. The food was a mixed bag. We ordered the apple salad and there were no apples in the salad. I'm not saying there was only a small amount of apples; I'm saying there was not one little sliver of apple anywhere in the salad. We pointed this out to our server and he said in a loud and aggressive voice, "Yeah, what else?" No apology just treating us like we were idiots for expecting apples in what the menu called an "apple salad". Very strange. We had two mains. Braised lamb--very gamey and fatty. And pan seared scallops which were pretty good. One desert was so so but the beignets were pretty good."
