Diner Reviews
  • "There's something about Bishop's which sets it apart from the other outstanding restaurants in Vancouver : It's like having a fabulous dinner at a friend's house. I go three or four times a year and I'm always impressed. The staff is amazing and embrace guests as part of their family. They have a way of perfectly pacing the dinner and making the evening memorable.. The menu and preparation are creative and contemporary. The chef sources the very best local ingredients and creates dishes which delight the palate.. John Bishop has created a true gem of a restaurant and deserves all the kudos received. This is fine dining at it's best."

  • "We enjoyed a fantastic dinner at Bishops for our 10th anniversary. We'd heard of Bishops, but oddly had never found our way there before. The menu features beautiful fresh local seafood and loc produce, exquisitely prepared. Two items I recommend are the warm asparagus salad and anything that includes octopus. The menu was backed by a very good wine list, again featuring many fantastic BC wines to complete the terroir. Service was perfect."

  • "It was great that the waiter took charge of a vegetarian option for one of our guests; however, it would be great if there were more options for guests with truly alternate diets."

  • "Vancouver is so lucky to have Bishop's! The care taken to provide fresh and inventive dishes has stood the test of time."

  • "Bishops was beyond what I imagined. I am a vegetarian, and took my boyfriend here for his birthday. I told the maitre d that I do not eat meat, and he had the chef make the most amazing past I have ever had. It was made with fresh vegetables, and it had a hint of cinnamon and olive oil. The wine list was spectacular. And of course dessert was to die for. We shared two dishes. The Creme Brule - amazing, and the three ice creams - delicious! I would recommend Bishops to everyone I meet."

  • "Bishhop's has been serving great food in a great atmosphere for as long as I can remember, and nothing has changed. This is a small, intimate restaurant with a well chosen menu and consistently great food. I would recommend it to anyone."

  • "Excellent food, service, atmosphere. A great place for a special or intimate occasion."

  • "From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were treated in a personable and respectful manner that was consistent throughout the meal. The food was unique and delicate with a wide range of options and lots of extras. The corn bread and rye breads were deliciously flavoured and textured. The salad, main course, and dessert were all superbly flavoured and cooked to perfection. This restaurant deserves the reputation it has sustained."

  • "We dine at Bishop's roughly once a quarter and it's always a pleasure to return. Quite simply, the delectable food, complete yet subtle service, just-engaging-enough staff, and simple, stylish ambience are consistently first-rate. While trendy, big-name restaurants may come and go, Bishop's endures at a level of refreshingly predictable excellence. For us, it is THE restaurant in Vancouver."

  • "If you have not been to Bishops, you simply need to give it a try. Consistently one of the very best restaurants that Vancouver has to offer, and there are a lot of great choices in this city. We have been going to Bishops on special occasions for over 20 years and the service, food and atmosphere is just as good today as it was back then."

  • "The menu is small, but everything on it is appealing--hard to choose! We were perfectly happy with our choices for all three courses. The flavours were exhilarating, and the presentation imaginative and artistic. The service was perfect, too. All of the servers stopped by and chatted, rather than one waiter being "in charge" of us for the evening. This somehow created a homelike atmosphere and made us feel very comfortable. All of the servers were able to provide detailed information when required, but none were pushy and intrusive. We were celebrating a wedding anniversary, and a hand-decorated edible (and delicious!) scroll saying "Happy Anniversary", mounted in real whipped cream, was a fitting capstone for the evening. "

  • "Owner/host John Bishop offers his own personal greeting to customers - a personal touch which adds to the warmth of the evening. Bishop is also able to well supervise the food offerings having a wealth of experience in this field. Rather expensive but the food is worth it. "

  • "My husband and I went to Bishop's for dinner while visiting Vancouver from the states. I often look to opentable for restaurants in cities I am visiting. I typically opt for the highest rated venue in the location and cuisine category I am looking for. That's how we chose Bishops and words cannot describe just how excellent our experience here was. The establishment is small and intimate which I really enjoy. The waitstaff was very attentive and the owner was on site greeting all guests. The food was absolutely amazing and beautifully prepared. I highly recommend the duck, which my husband had, and the salmon, which was my dish. "

  • "I just spent 10 days in Vancouver and ate in as many good restaurants as I could. But Bishop's was the highlight. Compared to the others, Bishop's credo seems to be simpler. The execution is excellent at Hawksworth but the dishes are on the complicated side. Ditto Blue Water. At Diva each plate is full of blobs and not much substance. At Bishop's the emphasis seems to be on provenance and season. Yet it's hardly home cooking. I was enormously privileged to have several chats with Mr Bishop himself. To my great surprise and joy he cooked me a little interlude between courses (a chip butty!). I was very touched. In two years, when I have forgotten the details of the other meals in Vancouver, I will remember this meal. Just brilliant."

  • "Have always seen great reviews for Bishop's but their menu seemed a little limited so was hesitant to try. Can't believe I waited so long! The oysters were absolutely amazing...and I'm seldom a fan of them. My partner, who's dairy sensitive, is very choosy of any cheese made from cow's milk, but could not stop raving about the 3 year aged cheese he ordered as dessert. My personal favorite was the beet salad. I love beets and often order them and I can easily say that not only was theirs a very healthy serving, but it was definitely within the top 3 beet salads I've ever had. Their staff were all very friendly and provided just the right amount of service without being too under or overly attentive. Absolutely wonderful place."

  • "This restaurant is not inexpensive, but is worth every dollar. The service is outstanding and so is the cuisine. I've visited this restaurant over 30 years and the quality is also the same - the best. Bishop's is perfect for an intimate dinner for two or a sophisticated meal for a group."

  • "Another wonderful meal at Bishop's! John and his associates always deliver a wonderful experience. We haven't been back to Bishop's for a number of years as Vancouver has so many good restaurants, but decided to return for a special occasion. It was brilliant, my wife had the salmon, I had the rack of lamb and both were exquisitely prepared, and flavourful. Thanks again for a spectacular evening."

  • "We enjoyed the evening, very attentive staff, and appreciated the explanation of each course that came out. Presentation was good, and particularly enjoyed the spot prawn appetizer. My rack of lamb was underwhelming, lacking in flavour, and the presentation was poor, lots of very mashed potatoes, and chewy veggie. On the other hand my husband's rock cod is delicious, wish I had that. Desserts were good."

  • "The attention to local produce and enhancing the flavors of the food is outstanding! The raw oysters on the half shell "Little Wings" from Okeover Inlet were particularly sweet with three choices of dipping including raw horseradish - excellent! Will be going back for more! The beet salad a taste extravaganza and the lamb perfectly done!! The service is impeccable - attentive but not intrusive and thank goodness for the tasteful background music - soft enough to allow for conversation!! My new/old latest favourite place for fine dining!!"

  • "We had a fantastic dinner on the 11th of May. Sadly, the service was not equivalent- our main course was over 30+ minutes arriving and not once during that time was a reason given nor an apology! The group that came in after was served before us. As the restaurant was far from full we do not understand what happened. We showed our disappointment by leaving a 12% tip instead of our usual 20+ %. This was unfortunate, as all it took to correct this entire situation was communication."

  • "The best food we've had in Vancouver BC. Food was delicious. the corn bread and the gluten free bread were so good we had two servings"

  • "Bishop's is consistently outstanding. The fresh, locally-sourced food is creatively prepared and presented. The artful plating, combined with the artistic setting of the restaurant combine to make a night at Bishop's truly memorable. The house made desserts are the "icing on the cake." Service is attentive, knowledgeable, and professional from the time you enter the restaurant to the time you leave. Bishop's thinks of everything! "

  • "We really enjoyed our evening at Bishops. The waitstaff were attentive and personable, though not intrusive. They anticipated most of our desires. I don't live in Vancouver and rarely am in the area, but I will put this on my list of places to revisit. We were 5 min. late for our 6 pm reservation. Glad we weren't any later, it filled up fast afterwards."

  • "Small, quaint, and romantic. White linen table cloths with simple beautiful single stem flower in vases. Very elegantly appointed. And to have the food match the ambience was perfection. Thank you, Bishop's for giving these out of town Americans a taste of Canadian culinary brilliance! :)"

  • "Small, cozy with wonderful food and service. The owner visited every table and seemed to know everyone very well. I think the in-the-know locals come here regularly. We visited from out of town and it was everything we could have wanted. Probably more of a special occasion place as the prices were more than average Vancouver restaurants. Worth every penny."

  • "What else can you say... It's Bishops! John Bishop still comes by each and every table to say hi. It was a perfect evening... great place, excellent food and I was with the most beautiful woman in the place... my wife in her pretty little "Lady in Red" dress!"

  • "The restaurant seems to take pride in the quality and the source of its food, along with the warmth of its hospitality. These values are mine, too, so I rate it the highest of any dining experience in the Lower Mainland."

  • "First time here. Food was superb and nicely presented with good variety on the menu. Service was friendly but unobtrusive. Had the crab risotto, kale caesar, and duck. All outstanding. So too the creme brûlée. Loved the intimacy of the restaurant. "

  • "We are from Los Angeles and have eaten at Bishop's several times over the years when we visit Vancouver. It remains an excellent experience: from John Bishop's personal greeting to the excellent food and terrific, reasonably priced wines (we usually order various glasses), it is a first-rate fine dining restaurant in an excellent restaurant city! We recommend it to all of our friends. And the creme brulee (on our last visit, vanilla/apricot) is etherial!"

  • "We haven't traveled to Vancouver before but Bishop's was highly regarded by locals including our tour guide, taxi drivers, and hotel folks. The review from Yelp and other sites backed up those thoughts. We found this to be one of the best dinners we had on our trip and the staff there are very good folks. They provided great service I would regard as being comparable to the best in New York or San Francisco, but casual enough that they are easy to talk to. The food, which is the most important thing, was beyond our expectations. Some say that menu is limited but my whole party found dishes that were great and even dessert was phenomenal."

  • "Although my wife and I have been to Bishop's a few times over the years and always enjoyed it, our recent visit was truly memorable. Despite the fact that the majority of patrons are very well dressed (jacket and tie for most men), our son's arrival in a work shirt and cargo pants caused nary a glance and had no effect on the exceptional service. The shortest apt description I can give is that it was like dining in a fine French restaurant but with an emphasis on local products. We spent over 3 hours and as in France or Italy, dining at the restaurant was an event to be remembered. The dishes are creative without being precious and the wine, a 97 Alsace reisling was just terrific. "

  • "Bishop's knows how to treat you right. Excellent service, delicious food and extremely classy. When I go out for an expensive meal, I want to feel like I got value for my money and I was 100% satisfied with my experience at Bishop's!"

  • "It was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The ambiance is lovely, the service terrific. We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bishop, who is charming and a distinguished gentlemen. The meal was as good as food can be. We were visiting from out of town and accidentally left our left overs as we caught our taxi. I called the restaurant to let them know, so it wouldn't be left there. They insisted that they would have someone drop off the left overs at the hotel for us. The drive was twenty minutes away and in the morning we found our leftovers in the hotel refrigerator. I can't imagine a higher level of service and care for their patrons - Bishops is a wonderful place from start to finish."
