Diner Reviews
  • "The Bali Hai has one of the best views of San Diego Bay, but it's not enough to overcome the irritating noise levels or the disappointing and overly expensive a' la carte menu. The noise was so bad that I could not hear our server or even have a conversation with my wife who was two feet away. I wonder if management is informing the workers in this restaurant about the real dangers of hearing loss from prolonged exposure to this level of noise or if they are providing adequate hearing protection? Great view, but I don't think we'll be back."

  • "We had a great time at Bali Hai. We sat out on the deck--where it was much quieter. Even though we had two children with us, the staff served us with grace and cheer. The food was pretty good. This is a great place for celebrations."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner here before attending a concert at Humphrey's. Our window table gave us a nice view of downtown San Diego across the bay. The food was very good, and reasonably priced. The waitstaff was very attentive, and friendly. We will be back."

  • "Bali Hai has a Pacific island atmosphere with excellent food. We had just arrived back from Maui and found the food comparable to the best restaurants on the island with one important exception, they included local fish on the menu that you won't find in Hawaii. We had fresh sheepshead, a very mild white fish that was prepared just right. You can't beat the atmosphere and the food will not disappoint."

  • "Had a romantic evening out with my husband. Had been to Bali Hai about 20 years ago and the food had changed but was very good. The scenic view of downtown San Diego is breath taking and a must see. If you are looking for a romantic night out with an amazing view, this is the spot."

  • "It's hard to understand, but most restaurants that have great views sacrifice food quality for the great view. You'd think with huge rent that places would hire a great executive chef. I was pleasantly surprised that the Bali Hai has an amazing view and great food. Gorgeous evening, insane, panoramic views of the bay and downtown San Diego and the food was memorable. Their Mai Tais are STRONG and yummy. Highly recommended. I'll be back!"

  • "it was hot and crowded, staff seemed disengaged, food wasn't being replenished to keep up with demand, horrible, will not be back."

  • "Been a customer of the Bali Hai for as many years as I can remember. The cuisine has evolved through the years, however they have maintained a higher than expected level of excellence. The remodel has brought the establishment into the 'modern era', and enhancing the view. Before the interior seemed closed and cramped, now it is more open and airy and inviting to patrons, in my opinion."

  • "Delicious polynesian fare and good service. We enjoyed the Mongolian Lamb which was enough for two to share. We were a bit disappointed in the Peking Duck breast as it was not what we had expected, having experienced this dish in an authentic Chinese restaurant. The Duck Breast was delicious, but the portion size was very small. We will return here again on our next visit to San Diego."

  • "Came here once for a banquet, once for lunch and once for dinner. Each time the food has been spectacular and oh-so delicious. I highly recommend the seafood entrees, you can't go wrong with the coconut shrimp, scallops, halibut, salmon or black cod. And for sides, the garlic noodles are to die for. Be aware that for dinner, sides are separate from the entrees, as entrees only include the main dish, no rice, potatoes or veggies on the side. Over all very romantic atmosphere, great view, nomtastic food, and service was just okay, but you can't blame them when they're just so busy. Highly recommend!"

  • "Cocktails, Apps and View were very good. Entrees not so much. Would stop for Drinks again, how ever would not have dinner."

  • "Arrived early to enjoy happy hour in the bar with appetizers - very nice! However, the waiter asked us to leave 5 minutes after finishing our dinner - ugh! There was a party of 20 who arrived 1/2 hour early and they were impatient to sit down. This ruined out great evening. We were relaxing, just finished dinner & finishing our drink. We had been there 1.5 hrs. If they needed us to relocate because the next party showed up early, they could of offered us a cocktail to relocate to the bar area again. Beware, you are in the "red zone" at 1.5 hours, I would understand it would mean this table was going to be available soon, but never expected to be asked to leave after a $150 dinner."

  • "It took 45 minutes to get dinner, and when it arrived it was lukewarm at best. Scallops were only okay and the ribeye steak was not of the best quality. It was disappointing because we had dined at Bali Hai during the fall and the food was terrific, so we were looking forward to this visit. Unfortunately, I had recently heard from other people that the quality of the food was not up to par and, because of our previous experience, refused to believe it. Without the view our experience would have been worse. But, you can't eat the view. I think if you go to Bali Hai for cocktails it's probably a terrific place, but for food this was a disappointing trip."

  • "As always, dinner here last night was unbelievably perfect. Service was spectacular, ambience relaxing, little noise, and the food was a 10+. The problem was in the lounge area prior to dinner. The musician was very good, the drinks were great, but the service was VERY slow. It took us five minutes to get our drink order aken and then another ten before we got served. Other bales had people at them and they couldn't get a server's attention to clean their table off from the previous guest, let alone order drinks. They just didn't seem to have the staff to cover happy hour. But once we went to dinner at 6:45, from that moment on, everything was perfect!"

  • "Prices are way too high for the average quality of the food. The views are beautiful, that's the only thing I can say good. Our meal was brought out about the same time as our appetizer. My fish was lukewarm. Service was good."

  • "Not a restaurant to enjoy a good steak. I was very disappointed with my food on July 4th. Won't order a steak there again."

  • "The table had a wonderful view which they kindly set us up with as we are from out of town. The server wasn't exactly friendly. Food was really good although some was overpriced once you add on sides (entrees came without any sides). Still, a really nice place."

  • "You pay for the view and prime real estate where this restaurant is located. Side dishes on most menu items are an extra cost option. Dinner for 2 easily tops $100. If you are ready for that, the food is very good, as well as the bar menu. The service is excellent. The view of San Diego Bay is worth every penny. It is a favorite of ours for special occasions."

  • "I am a young 65 years old (Skydiver & Scuba Diver). I has dined at Bali Hai since I was 9 years old with my parents. The restaurant today is better than it has ever been in it's long and notable history. The perfect place to bring out of town guests."

  • "I've been going to the Bali Hai since the early seventies when my parents took me for the first time. The menu has changed since then but still remains good. Best Mai Tai's in the world and great city view"

  • "Best time to be seated, is about 30 minutes before sunset... That way you appreciate the view of downtown, AND when you finish dinner, you see it reflected upon the bay water... Best romantic dinner... Although the ambience is awkward because some people dress up with a suit, while others wear a tee shirt and flip flops..."

  • "We have been here many times and unlike most buffets, the Bali Hai changes their Buffet around....simple little changes that just make it that much better. And dispite the large groups the noise level was still very tolerable."

  • "We´ve been to the Bali Hai for the 3rd time, celebrating our anniversary. We got a nice table with this breathtaking view over the San Diego Skyline at Sunset. It was romantic and also funny, energetic, while all the other guest were celebrating their weddings, birthdays or anniversaries, too. We shared a starter and then I had the fresh Ahi Tuna with Vegetables, two yummie Cocktails and at least our friendly server made a picture of us. Perfect Dinner! Thanks to Bali Hai ;-)"

  • "We live close to this lovely place, and have dined here often. The food is not great, but it's such a nice place. Service is good, but warm poki, cold entrees, just ruin it all. It's a high volume restaurant, and terribly inconsistent. You never know if an adaquate meal is coming, or one that appears pre-cooked."

  • "We have often dined at the Bali Hai for lunch! The menu very nice, service fantastic and noise level acceptable. We decided to take a few out-of-town guests to dinner at Bali Hai...service fantastic, good delicious but the noise level was so outrageous we could not even talk across our table! Admittedly it was a Friday evening...but could't they do something about the noise level??? How about hanging some interesting cloth banners around to soak us some of the noise? We will not go back for dinner until they do something about the noise...and we'll know when because it is still a favorite luncheon destination."

  • "It was our first time at Bali Hai and we had a great time. They were quick to seat us at our reservation time and we got a lovely table on the patio. Great food selection and the champagne they served was good as well. My only wish is that there was a nut free selection of desserts...my son has a peanut allergy and so that didn't allow him to try any of the desserts other than the ice cream. Great food, great service...we will be back :)"

  • "Was recommended this restaurant from a friend. The servers, hostess, and whole crew was so nice and easy going. They have us recommendations. All the food we ordered was delicious. Came from out of town and it really topped our vacation with this place. Definitely will be coming back."

  • "Had a wonderful and fun dinner here many years ago and while I knew they no longer had a floor show I still wanted to return and check it out. The staff was great. While the food was good we would probably not return as we found the choices to be a bit to different for our taste. The biggest problem we found was the noise. The bar area is in the same large open room as the dining tables and we could hardly hear each other at our table."

  • "Bali Hai has a panoramic view of San Diego and the bay. Be there to see the sunset reflected off the city's windows. Our table was ready when we arrived and was right where we had requested. Our waiter, Jeff, was a jewel and gave us good advice on what to order. The food was excellent. Being Friday night, the bar was mobbed, and the noise level was too high. Try another night."

  • "My family and I went to Bali Hai to celebrate my 28th birthday. The service was great and I love the views of the bay in the dining room. The only thing I was disappointed with was the cost of the food. Our meals were good but they weren't great. I don't think they should charge so much for food that doesn't wow their diners."
