  • "Pork chops were delicious! Complimentary champagne for Birthday was also very good! Overall employees, environment, service and food quality were more than we expected!"

  • "Avant, which is now a year old, is located in the charming Rancho Bernardo Inn. It's ten minutes off the I-15 in north San Diego, and worth a visit. The drinks, food and service are exceptional. My wife and I enjoyed a pre-theater meal including separate entrees of duck and scallops. Very good! The ambiance is a bit dark due to the window blinds being shut with the harsh sun bleeding into the restaurant, but it's a nice atmosphere and an interesting mix of local patrons, golfers and hotel guests enjoying this upscale scene. I recommend it. Parking is free in the RBI lot close to the restaurant."

  • "Excellent menu options which did not disappoint our tastebuds."

  • "Nicely redecorated. Poorly seated next to outside door. Charcuterie good, but ham choices limited. Wedge salad excessive dressing. Winter squash soup very excellent. Avoid wine on tap .. Way too cold. Pricey for the quality"

  • "The Avant at Rancho Bernardo Inn is a refreshing addition to quiet suburbia. Meals are fresh & organic with a gourmet touch! Excellent wine list with pairing recommendations. Service is alittle slow. So, not a place to go with kids or if you're in a rush. There is a new Chef in town so I think we can expect some refreshing creativity! This Resturant is beautifully decorated. Tables are too close, so it does not lend itself to intimate conversation. If you're looking for a unique brunch experience this is a place to check out! They offer a built your own Bloody Mary menu at Sunday Brunch! The Avant is a real neighborhood gem! They offer a beautiful view of the Golf Course and great property for a stroll. Valet parking available, too! Enjoy!"

  • "Great job! Excellent service and great food. Everybody needs to try the raspberry sorbet. It really taste like fresh raspberries, where most don't"

  • "had not been to the Rancho Bernardo Inn in a long time - first time since the restaurant was updated to Avant. Definitely different vibe than the old one. More casual - but still excellent food. This was an 88th birthday occasion, and was delightful - not disappointed in any way! Will go back, for sure!"

  • "Really enjoyed the ample portions. Had salad, the duck and brussels sprouts dish. Delicious and filling. I get tired of restaurants where the portions are so small that I leave hungary (and yes, I am thin). However, I am of an age where hearing can be difficult with the background noise. Will return on on a less busy weeknight perhaps. But I will return."

  • "I brought my nieces and my daughter for a "girl's nite out ". We had so much fun, considering it a first for the girls to get together. My husband ended up joining us, which added to the fun. Food was great, wine okay, but company was the best. Our server knows what is good to eat and just brought out the food and wine."

  • "Second visit to Avant- we live in the neighborhood. We heard the menu had changed. What a disappointment to sit down order drinks and not like the sound of a single thing on the menu. The menu has weird combinations, and seems overly pretentious. My husband ordered a steak with a side from another meal, I ordered the lamb. The food was good but not great. I tried the chocolate trio for desert. The chocolate avocado moose was terrible tasting, left a nasty taste in my mouth. I only liked one part of the trio! Again a disappointment. The restaurant is a strange mix of environments, with the sports bar, paper menus / fine ding experience. It seems like it doesn't know what type of restaurant it is. What an expensive disappointment."

  • "We were there on a Sun eve. The service was so poor and so slow. The food over rated. The crab salad was terrific one time and this time poor. We will not go back."

  • "This was our fourth meal at Avant and probably our last. We had high hopes for this place, the location and decor are great, the food not so much. Our crab salads were overpriced and tiny - less than a tablaespoon of over salted crab per plate. So much salt that you crunched on individual grains. The mains were worse so over salted that we sent them back. My daughters flatbread was cold and she thought it tasted like supermarket frozen pizza. Amidst apologies our meals were replaced and our glasses of wine comped but honestly the replacement food wasn't much better. It's a real pity that the food is so poor the place itself is a delight. The menu is pretentious and overpriced - I hope they can fix it!"

  • "Although I marked the service as fair there was some great service there and some terrible service. It's loud to the point that I felt we had to shout at each other to hear. The bar is right next to the dining room and the acoustics aren't great for a cozy dinner. Our waiter was snooty and apparently having a bad night but the hostess and bus boy were both great. I doubt I would ever try this place again. I'm not comparing it to what it use to be. I'm comparing it to the places I do enjoy. The food wasn't anything to write home about. In fact it's not anything to write here about."

  • "First visit to this new restaurant. Kind of pricey, but very good. I would recommend the patio room by the fire, but the night we went it was raining and cold so we sat in the dining room. It looked like the place to be is the bar for the most fun and that's what we'll try next. Hear they have a great happy hour. Nice visit overall."

  • "Elegant presentation of dishes. Casual semi-formal dinning experience made less formal with booths & dimmer lighting. Excellent service by waiter & buss boys. Priced reasonable well but well worth the trouble. Very romantic spot to take a date or wife too."

  • "We invited our good friends to join us for my wife's birthday dinner on January 30th. We enjoyed our cocktails by the fireplace and were primed for our meal, but alas, we then waited for everything -- the drinks, orders to be taken, and longest of all, the meals. Our server made no effort to be pleasant nor offered any information without being asked. We were on the verge of leaving when the meals finally showed up. What saved the evening from being a complete strikeout was the food itself, which was truly creative and delicious. We are granting Avant a mulligan on this one, on the assumption that the interminable delay and the unhappy server was an aberration. We may give it another try someday because the food was such a treat."

  • "Read mixed reviews on this restaurant, but decided to try for ourselves. I had fish, my husband steak, one friend chicken, and the other shrimp. We all liked our meal. The beet salad was fabulous as a starter. Menu a bit confusing the our waiter was knowledgable about all items we questioned. I would return to Avant."

  • "RBI should be proud of their new restaurant and its incredible food and service. I have taken several friends there now and each time we come away impressed with the dishes and how exceptional the wait staff are. Their small plate selection is one of the best I have seen and this time, I asked for a grilled veggie plate and it was so good, I highly recommend that they consider adding it to the menu. This has become one of my favorite restaurants in North County."

  • "Food quality and service were both great. However the food portions are extremely small. I have never encountered a restaurant that offers such small portions and at such high prices. It is really to bad because the food quality is excellent but for me it is just a blatant rip off. Price is not the issue for me. The extremely small portions are in fact insulting = a blatant rip off of their customer. I travel all over the world and eat at 4 & 5 star restaurants in many different countries and have never experienced anything like this before. I wish I could recommend it but I and the people I was with will not be going back."

  • "The food was good, a bit overpriced. The service was nice and friendly but the time it took for us to get our main course was very long. It took over an hour from the time we order till the time it came out. Overall, I would recommend this place to friends; just be patient."

  • "The atmosphere is very comfortable. We started with the chef's special cheese plate and the salami platter, oh my!!! If you love exploding flavors you must try this. Next, came the wedge salad which I was warned was not your run of the mill "wedge." Let me say it was over the top delicious being slightly grilled and served with all the traditional toppings of the wedge.....OUT THIS WORLD GOOD!! Also, we had the beet salad (We love beet salads), this too was something to really RAVE about. The entrees were also fabulous. I think we will return to Rancho Bernardo JUST so we can eat here at Avant!!"

  • "My wife and I recently went to AVANT for her birthday and found it to be a great restaurant right here in our own neighborhood. I would recommend it to anyone that likes fine dining. The menu is a unique take on many standard dishes."

  • "Not being foodies, the menu choices were not great. They did have steak which we had for main course and it was OK but the pureed black stuff under it was so unappealing. Open to try something a little different but this was a little too much Unable to have conversation because of noise. Took 3 hours for dinner (4 courses)"

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and was very impressed. I am a giant fan of good food and thinking out of the box so I have been wanting to try this place for white some time. I was overly impressed by the deconstructed plates and the overall meal. I would say the appetizers and small plates were beyond expectation and really blew me away however the actual entree was pretty normal. I wasn't overly impressed with the pork loin but the prawn and squid in pasta was great. A tad on the salty side bc they used capers and olives in the sauce bit I was none the less impressed. I will definitely go back but I will not be ordering the pork Lin. Oh and Mac n cheese was bland and dry... they brought a new one bit it was still not good."

  • "A truly wonderful evening. THe golf course views are so inviting and peaceful, the decor is upscale and contemporary, very nice server, always smiling and attentive (elle was her name) Food presentation is a work of art. You could eat with your eyes. Delicious. Can't wait to go again."

  • "We had not been to Avant before but were big fans of El Bizcocho which used to be in the same location at Rancho Bernardo Inn. Avant is different. It is not as refined as El Biz was (some called it "stuffy" but we liked the atmosphere.) The food was excellent. I had the Red Quinoa and Avocado salad (amazing) and the NY Strip (excellently prepared). My wife had the salmon and all of the items were delicious! They have a huge wine list but the prices are outrageous for the selection. I am not at all cheap but I won't spend $100 on a $30 bottle of wine. Their wine by the glass selection, however, is abysmal. Only about 5 choices for red. The best part of the meal was definitely dessert. Same room! Overall great place. Recommended."

  • "After eating the salmon dish, makes me not want to eat salmon again cheese cake was awful tasted like goat cheese. I left starving. My salmon was 1 inch 1.5 inches"

  • "Nice but wasn't all that impressed with the food. The chicken which was highly rated wasn't exceptional. Everything was good but I wouldn't hurry back because there are so many other restaurants I want to try. Loved the outdoor patio downstairs when we walked around after dinner. Would return to experience that. Liked that the wine was specially priced for restaurant week."

  • "Was. Good experience. Had to wait a while to get seated and are good. But they where very busy and the server did her best to make it as good as it could be. I wouldn't hold it against her"

  • "Noisy, slow, little ambience, 1 waitress working a large room, asked for bread three times, water only refilled once, crowded. Food was good presentation but not excellently prepared. Overall way below expectation for a highly rated restaurant."

  • "My wife and I took friends here to thank them for helping us with a big project in our yard. The decor was very nice, new and fresh. Stephan gave us friendly, informative and attentive service. The food was very interesting...quite a bit beyond my knowledge of food...but very tasty and delicious! I was pleasantly surprised by the food. All in all, we all had a wonderful time, and I'd love to come back again."

  • "This was our first time at the restaurant, I may be spoiled by the experiences I'd had at the original El Bizcocho. The service at Avant was Fair nothing special, especially compared to what I had experienced at El Biz and our server did not have much knowledge about wine and recommended pairings with the items on the menu. There were several families with small children who were quite active in the restaurant so that made it feel like we were in a Chili's. The food was good, I ordered 2 starters but both were very salty - the roasted beets with truffle oil potato salad and the duck confit shepherds pie."
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "Our overall experience was very very disappointing. The appetizer/ salads had great presentation and were excellent. The service was prompt upon greeting, but the wait time for our food was uncomfortably long. When our entrées came, they were lukewarm. The black potato puree had dried on the plate and looked unappetizing. The cut of the meat did not taste of high quality for 39.00."
