A word from AR Valentien at The Lodge at Torrey Pines
In our signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, Chef Jeff Jackson showcases, fresh market driven seafood, meats, produce and dairy products.
The menu is determined and influenced by what is available at any given time during the various seasons. Certain farms have been commissioned to produce items specific to the Lodge. Local small fish and seafood companies who deal in regional Southern California and Baja "catches" are utilized, as well as other west coast purveyors.
Out of respect for the quality of the foodstuffs available, the cooking is somewhat restrained in order to take advantage of the natural flavors and textures of the ingredients.
Because of this more "hands off" approach and the use of simple seasonings, various olive oils, and intense broths and juices as flavoring mediums, the dishes retain their nutritional integrity as well.

Diner Reviews
  • "First time there celebrating the Wife's birthday. Got there before the sun went down, it was a gorgeous place to be. Menu was varied with something for everyone, even a kid's menu for our 9 year old. Food was exceptionally fresh and beautiful. We were also pleasantly surprised with a couple of tasting items that came as a bonus from the kitchen. Service was perfect."

  • "This is an amazing restaurant. The food is extraordinary. Everything is locally sourced. Each vegetable is unique in its flavor. The food is extremely creative. The chef gets better with each passing year. The wine is amazing. But what I like the most, is the people who staff the restaurant. They are warm, profession, anticipate your every need. After two visits, I feel like family. Paul's knowledge of wine is amazing. All this and a beautiful view of the ocean, humming birds flying above, and the warm evening breeze blowing off the pacific. I travel all over the world and go to many very fancy restaurants, the food and service here tops any other place I have been to. This is an exceptional experience."

  • "This restaurant never disappoints. All our meals were expertly prepared. Our table choices were varied . I had the Halibut. Others had chicken and duck. Importantly, the wine list had a large variety of medium priced wines. This is unusual in a high end restaurant. As is our practice, my wife and I shared a desert. Our pecan pie was dry and chewy and we left 1/2 of it on the plate. Except for desert, the place was great. We have been there before and will certainly return in the future"

  • "We took our 2 and 5 yr old boys out for our last night of our spring break vacation. We sat outside to an impressive view of the Torrey Pines golf course and the ocean. The staff were thoughtful, kind and very patient. Not to mention extremely competent. Wine list was impressive (I'm a big Cab guy) and their staff had excellent recommendations. Quite simply. The. Best. Duck. Ever. Perfected dishes for both taste and texture. Dessert was crazy good (who knew you could significantly improve pecan pie!) and varied. A must for anyone who makes food a priority in their lives!"

  • "This was my fifth time at AR V and probably enjoyed it the most since it was the first non-business dinner. My wife and I hosted her sister and husband who live in the area. The menu is very well thought out and works well with the wine list that is fairly priced. This is a superb restaurant for any occasion but always delivers first class cuisine in a very comfortable setting."

  • "AR Valentien is a hidden gem nestled among the beauty of Torrey Pines. It has all the natural elements to "getaway" and the meal prep, presentation and taste is superb. No other restaurant in San Diego county can be compared to AR Valentien. It is a place that feeds the soul visually and gastronomically. A dining experience surround by architectural beauty, art and a sense of "european" class that is unique and welcomed difference."

  • "AR Valentien is a great gem, wouldn't expect to see a restaurant located in a hotel this good. Food was very good and season which I love. Service was great and it has great view."

  • "We took our 84 year young friend for her Birthday celebration. She loved it and truly enjoyed the most amazing lemon cake that was easily shared by the three of us. We would come back again and recommend to others."

  • "The service was attentive without being intrusive. All of our entrees were very good, as were the results. Dining outside with a view of the Torrey Pines golf course and Pacific Ocean was spectacular. Overall, we had an outstanding experience and I look forward to dining here again."

  • "We LOVE ARV. Wonderful and consistent food, great wine menu, and great atmosphere. We love coming for late lunch and sitting on the deck. We make reservations at other fine dining places but always end up coming back to the Lodge. Cozy and intimate, good service. Good EVERYTHING!"

  • "We stayed at The Lodge for our wedding annivesary so this was a natural fit for dinner. We had a nice cozy booth and our waiter was friendly and attentive. Ther service throughout was very good. Our starters ( Cauliflower soup w/Chorizo & Caeser Salad) were terrific. We also enjoyed the tasty little amuse bouche of hamachi. But our entrees were just "OK." My husband's fish was fishy. I ordered the pork loin which was served with delicious greens and also a tasty wedge of pork belly. But the loin itself was not very remarkable."

  • "The service was gracious and not intrusive. The little extra food items that were offered made the meal more of an experience. But, the birthday dessert (I had alerted the restaurant to the fact that this was a special event) was a little disappointing given the quality of the rest of the food."

  • "We went to AR Valentien for breakfast and the food was wonderful as was the ambiance. The breakfast was terrific that we went back again the same day for dinner. Dinner was disappointing - the service and food. We told our waitress we were on a gluten free diet but we weren't offered any gluten free options. We overheard at the table in front of us from another waiter that the chef could make them gluten free muffins and other offerings. When we asked the waitress about this she told us it was available but that it would take 15-20 minutes to order the muffins and that our food was going to be served now. Although we were given the muffins on the way out, the dinner wasn't that good and the service was lacking. I woudn't go back for dinner."

  • "I had this rated number 1 in San Diego---- despite the hefty price tag--- after two fabulous meals in December. This vista was just ok. Same great service and ambiance but food was just ok, you better be getting excellent at minimum for these prices.Meals of both me and my date were just ok. Perhaps a Chef change has occurred ?"

  • "I dined once again at A. R. Valentien; which has become my favorite restaurant in San Diego. Perfect for both client meals and special family dinners, it is always an event to eat there. The seasonal menu options are superb. Without exception, the many meals I have enjoyed there have been stellar; and the service truly exceptional."

  • "Birthday celebration........what I experienced was not food.........It was an art gallery for the eyes and a circus for the pallet. From the salads, entrees, and desserts this place ROCKED any fine dining establishment I have frequented. Our servers were top notch professionals..........I mean, they were ON, ,,, there for you to enhance your total dining experience. The Chef served extra items for your enjoyment, (not ordered, just because) and after we ordered wonderful desserts, the Pastry Chef sent a plate of warm, fresh, items for us to try. Lodge, meal, service .....Over the Top dining experience....Highly recommended !!! Kudos AR Valentien Staff...Awesome Job !!!!"

  • "We had gone here for lunch (which was delicious), but this trip was for dinner. The restaurant decor is beautiful. We had a nice table with great service! The food was outstanding. Among the 5 of us, we chose the duck, 2 chose the chicken and 2 chose the sablefish. Everyone was 100% satisfied with their food. We also had a couple of delicious desserts - the s'mores (very decadent), the mille fuille (pardon my speling) and they brought a complimentart dessert for our birthday celebrant. Overall we had a wonderful time and are looking forward to returning."

  • "The evening was perfect, from the greeting at the hostess desk to the roses, from my husband, waiting on the table for our arrival. The server was very caring and attentive and offered many alternative suggestions for the meal to avoid certain allergies for my husband. The meal was excellent from start to finish and no allergic reactions! We had a delightful time with a wonderful view and extremely pleasant staff. We will definitely return and let our friends know."

  • "It started well but the waiter seemed to lose interest and thus there was much too much time between courses. On the positive side the waiter was very pleasant."

  • "Our dinner was surprisingly entertaining, with superb food and service. A very large party was dining at the same as my husband and I and they were definitely VIP guests. Despite, and perhaps because of this, we received extra care and attention as well. Really, really great food. Would certainly dine here again. This was the best meal we had in La Jolla during our vacation."

  • "There are very few restaurants where I can say that every single thing was outstanding. There is always something- whether the sides weren't great, or the wine list was poor (or great but too expensive). The wait staff was attentive without being intrusive. Someone was always standing off to the side with his head on a swivel looking to make sure the guests had everything they needed. The wine list appeared to be all California wines, which in my book is a plus. They also had GREAT wines by the glass as well as half bottles. You might balk at a $32 glass of wine, but I thought it was perfect. (I wanted a nice cabernet, but was not going to buy a $130 just to drink a glass or two.) Food was outstanding but I am out of room to type."

  • "It was my 70th b-day, and I pushed my wheelchaired husband to the dining room & graciously greeted. Given seating options, we chose a smaller room. A bit of a struggle, but I got my husband into a booth. 3 men sat 7 ft away & we soon discovered that one was VERY loud. No offer was made to move us during our 2+ hours of dining & I declined to ask, because of my husband. Our hostess was gracious & efficient, providing VG service. Wine selection: Excellent. Food: Onion soup... pureed? & too sweet. Croûtons tasted deep fried/greasy. Steak--outstanding. Potatoes--very disappointing glob. Seabass/shrimp--excellent. Dessert choices were disappointing. Strange: no receipt for the tip -- just for the dinner."

  • "Only minus is that food portion (of main course) is TOO LARGE. Excessive. Portion could be reduced (with a light decrease of price without reducing the profit margin!"

  • "My family and I had dinner here Saturday night to celebrate our daughter's birthday and what a great surprise!!. The steak was the best we've ever had, including San Diego's best steak houses, and the chef even included an extra side dish and non gluten biscuits for those of us requiring non gluten meals! Wine was superb and the wait staff was wonderful. We all would recommend this restaurant for anyone celebrating something special- or just a wonderful dinner!"

  • "The duck entree was excellent and well-priced for lunch. at $18 as I recall. The crisp brussell sprouts were also excellent. The house salad was fairly simple and overpriced at $12. A short history of AR Valentien and the Lodge would be nice on the menu sheet... Rod Kontny"

  • "We took our son on his 20th birthday as it's kind of a tradition to go to the best restaurants in town since he's been growing up. This has to be the best food, service and ambiance in San Diego. The food is creative but not over the top, between the three of us I think we had an amazing variety of tastes! We sampled lobster, veal, beef, shrimp, and scallops between the appetizers, salads and main dishes. The chef prepared a beautiful complimentary dessert for my son. Can't say enough about how delicious everything was. This restaurant does not disappoint for a special occasion!"

  • "So often, "Fine dining" is not so fine. This restaurant is certainly an exception. Four of us who dine out often were very impressed not only with the beautifully prepared and delicious food, but also the friendly, superb service. Will most definitely go again....perhaps during the summer months and enjoy the outdoor dining area. The holiday decorations were beautiful, as well!"

  • "Very disappointed with this restaurant. Food tasted like wedding buffet food. Duck was dry, pate was dry, and the shrimp was very plain with a too sour sauce. The decor was dated with the average age 65. If you are golfing this place would be ok to grab a burger. Beside that stay away!"
