Diner Reviews
  • "Great food and drinks and great service. This isn't just your standard schnitzel, etc. This is a very modern take on German cuisine, and it is wonderful. But, if you're in the mood for for more traditional fare, they offer that too."

  • "currently my favorite restaurant in town ! their three course lunch is an incredible deal. Don't be misled into thinking this is a typical heavy German fare, there is sophistication and restraint in the cooking, and the wines are unusual and delicious."

  • "Both wife and I had seafood entrees that were outstanding. Salad and dessert was also over the top. Service was great as well."

  • "We had dinner with some friends before the Musical Theatre Heritage show at Crown Center. I had the beet salad and the lemon risotto with fresh, grilled seafood, with a flight of the rosé wine tasting the restaurant was offering. The flavors and texture were extraordinary. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "They made our anniversary dinner so special from beginning to end!!"

  • "There weren't very many people in the restaurant over lunch the day we were there and I thought the service could have been a little better. Food was absolutely perfect as always. We both had the trout and it was melt in your mouth deliciousness! Enticing menu and we will be back to try out some of the items we've never had before. Not your typical heavy German food, that's for sure!"

  • "Went to Affare for the first time and was very impressed. We loved the atmosphere, great service and delicious German food. We have already recommended it to our friends and family!"

  • "We had one of the best meals we have every had last Saturday evening. The food was exceptional. We started with a great wine and ordered the Leipziger Alleriei for an appetizer. The vegetable, pretzel dumpling and crawfish dish was like nothing I had ever tasted. The flavor combination was incredible. I would highly recommend this appetizer. We then had Schnitzel and roast pork. Both were cooked to perfection. The wonderful thing about Affare is that the menu is for every taste. I am anxious to try some of the other entrees. Leave room for dessert. The service and attention to detail were beyond expectation. Your wait staff is to be commended. Thank you for a lovely evening. We will definitely return."

  • "Best German food I have had in the Midwest and some of the most authentic flavor I have had since living in Germany. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu."
    Dined on 8/15/2014
  • "We would definitely go again: there were so many tempting items that we feel that we've just skimmed the surface. Service was a little confused but friendly. Certainly not your grandmother's German food; it was delicious and creative."

  • "I have now eaten at this restaurant 3 times in the last 3 months and will be back each month. Service is very good and the food is great."

  • "Affable, attentive servers. An extensive, Austrian/German themed menu ... with some surprisingly good specials each night. Inspired cocktails and killer homemade pastries and desserts. From a foodie perspective, it's everything you could ever want and more. Lunches used to be outrageously expensive, but now they have conveniently priced $10 lunch specials that can't be beat. Chef Martin knows how to create unique fine dining dishes that you won't find anywhere else. Great place to dazzle a date or a client, that's for sure."

  • "Affare is one of the finest restaurants in KC. The food is awesome. Chef Martin is a fabulous chef. Their wine list is the best in town for German and other European varietals."

  • "Fantastic place to experience authentic modern German food. Wonderful experience."

  • "This was our first time at Affare. The lemon risotto with seafood was spectacular! but the serving was rather small. My jagerschnitzel was very good and a hearty serving. The pretzel bread sticks with mustard spread and butternut squash pickles were a lovely touch and very tasty. The deconstructed German chocolate cake was not good, rather dry and definitely not a $14 dessert."

  • "Our evening at Affare was wonderful. I had the salmon with the peach glaze and my husband had the duck. We both would describe them as amazing! Wine... a bit pricey but yummy. We will go back."

  • "It is very hard finding a German restaurant anywhere in the states and I was so excited when we did in Kansas City! And it was excellent! The restaurant was very modern and had amazing artwork. The food was just as excellent! The veal dish with Spätzle and whiskey brown sauce was terrific! And the portions were just the right amount! One thing you MUST order is the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte! (The Black Forest cake!) It tasted authentic! And being from that part of Germany, I know what I'm talking about!! Enjoy!"

  • "I took a client to Affare for lunch. It was a little interesting making our way to the door as there is a lot of construction going on around the venue currently. But once we made it in, everyone commented on how nice the space was. Our waitress, while very friendly, did not explain anything on the menu. Since this is a German restaurant and the food is upscale, we had to wing it when ordering. But I'm glad we did. The lunch items were fabulous, and the pretzel dumpling is to die for. I will visit them again, and hope for a more engaged server."

  • "I had the elk with huckleberry reduction and it was out of this world... complex and healthy! The wine list was not lengthy, but the selection was excellent. The server was very skilled and attentive. We had a wonderful romantic get-away on a Saturday night! I would recommend Affare to anyone for that special occasion. Be prepared to pay for it, though."

  • "We couldn't have spent our twenty-fifth anniversary at a better restaurant. Our server, Tony, was incredibly knowledgable about the menu and wine pairings, plus provided us with a very relaxed setting. My husband chose the fixed menu option, and it was glorious! I had the beet salad and the sauerbraten, which were equally wonderful. We can't wait to go back soon!"

  • "Excellent German/Austrian cuisine, closest to going to europe itself. Food well prepared and owners are very friendly and engaging. Staff was also very attentive to our needs. Highly recommended."

  • "Our dining experiences at Affare have always been excellent. We enjoyed the wine tasting before our meal. The trout entree was delicious as was the apple strudel."

  • "This was voted the best new restaurant in the City when it opened a year or so ago. It appears to still be outstanding."
    Dined on 7/15/2014
  • "We had the golden trout and the wild caught salmon, both were excellent, we started with a house salad and mushroom soup again both were great and we finished with peach pana cotta also a real treat, I ordered from the $19 menu which was a real deal, we also had a bottle of one of the featured Rose wines, ours was from Austria and was not sweet but dry and quite good, I must admit I didn't think any rose wines were not sweet, but this wine was really very good, I was also impressed to see Major Sly James also dining for lunch."

  • "As always, I am always pleased with the food. The service is generally very good as well. This time it was less to be desired. The young man seemed to be very disconnected from our table. He actually took the bill away to run the card, dropped it at the table a few minutes later, only to find he never ran the card. Not sure where his mind was but the rest of the evening was good as usual."

  • "After hearing great things, we changed our anniversary plans to AFFARE. We had a wonderful time and will definitely go back. Have already recommended AFFARE to friends and family. The atmosphere is great. Love the art work on the walls. The staff throughout the evening was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu offerings, and well trained/professional. The attention to detail started with the crisp white tablecloth, the look and wording of the menus (both food and drink) to the thoughtful presentation of each course. Everything was delicious. The skill with which the food was prepared was evident from the correct cooking of the meat to the combination of flavors and textures. In a word, "GO!""

  • "What a great looking room, I only wish the food matched. The chilled cucumber soup was good but the fennel foam on top had no flavor. If molecular gastronomy doesn't add flavor or texture don't go it. The duck with sour cherry was yummy but a horrible presentation. And the chocolate cake was old and bad!! It tasted like a walk in cool smells and for the amount of money I paid it should have been fresh. With so many good places to eat in KC I will go someplace else next time."
