A word from Acme Food & Beverage Co.
The ovens are turned on early. Six o'clock most days. Earlier on Sunday. Within an hour, bread is rising, apples are being sliced. Pecan pies are pulled hot from the oven and left to cool. Ice cream churns in the machine. Cups of coffee steam on the prep table, the baker's cup marked with chocolaty fingerprints. By midmorning, pork shoulder, rubbed with spices the day before, is slowly smoked. And white buckets are filled with sliced onions. Corn is shucked. The stock that cooked all night is taken off the stove and strained. Bags of fresh shrimp are delivered in old grocery store bags. The waiters arrive in groups, shirts and ties on hangers. By then, every burner in the kitchen is being used. Herbs are chopped. Scallops cleaned. Ovens at 500 degrees. All sauces are checked. Bartenders polish their shakers. Silverware is rolled and every surface is wiped down. Music. Lights. Doors are opened. Dinnertime. At Acme. Seven nights a week. Local never tasted so damn good.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We were a party of six, and all of us liked the food. In both the first and second courses, one order arrived significantly later than the rest (as in, the other people at the table were half finished when the final dish arrived), which is poor planning by the kitchen. The restaurant automatically added a 20% gratuity for large parties, which was fine in this instance because the service was good; but I object to being forced to tip at an undeserved rate if the service had been spotty. Despite these issues, I would willingly go back because every dish we had was good."

  • "one word..."phenomenal" You need to try the French Toast Casserole!"

  • "I like the food, but the restaurant was cramped (servers bumped into our chairs about every five minutes), the service was lousy, and the atmosphere was obnoxious. Seemed like another over-rated C+ Triangle restaurant that people go to because there's not much else around."

  • "Have been going to acme for many years, normally have received good good at a fair price with excellent service. First time I was a dissapointed. Took over an hour to get our entrees, the waitress didn't come once while we waited to let us know the kitchen was behind. Once our food got to the table she did comp our last round of drinks but we had to take our food to go. First time I had a bad experience at acme, hope it doesn't continue."

  • "We took some friends were in town visiting on their journey from FL back home to Wash, DC. Previous to visiting with us in ChapelHill they were in Charleston for a couple days, and they were raving about their meals there. When we got to dessert at ACME, our friend's comment to his wife was,'you said Charleston was the best you'd eaten ever - not any more.' Sums it up! Great evening of food, fun, wine and bourbon."

  • "My daughter and I went to Carrboro to see a show at the Cat's Cradle. We were told to go to Acme and were not disappointed. The food was outstanding! We will be back the next time we are in town."

  • "All I have to say is that the deluxe burger with bacon and pimento cheese was phenomenal! The burger and fries were delicious. Definitely would recommend going to Acme overall and trying that burgah. Thank you for the service and great food. PS should have more fresh limes for drinks."

  • "We had a very good meal at Acme on Friday. We were visiting the area, and Acme had been recommended. Will return."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "The Friday night we were there my husband ordered the fresh flounder which came with fresh arugula and some sort of bean. It was perfectly exquisite, not overdone and the ingredients were fresh, fresh, fresh. Acme really came through."

  • "Acme never fails to produce a good time. With a southern food inspired menu that a foodie and a layperson can enjoy, this restaurant brings the best of both worlds, making this a great place to take family or friends out."

  • "look for the specials offered, such as the Hog Island half shelled oysters to be dipped in one of three types of zesty innovative sauces."

  • "We had a delightful brunch full of creative southern cuisine. The doughnuts were amazing! The waitress was helpful and very friendly. We'll be back for sure! Carrboro is a quaint town and ACME is the perfect restaurant for it."

  • "As a vegetarian I wasn't expecting much from a very limited vegetarian menu, however, with a combination of daily specials and a chef willing to make an off the menu entree we had an amazingly good meal. The pimento cheese fritters to start were actually light and full of flavor. The skillet cornbread was moist and delicious. The special succotash entree made me want a second helping. Although we were too full to want a dessert we couldn't resist sharing the dark chocolate with caramel. We left the plate empty. My only regret was that I was unable to try their Mac and Cheese because it was made with beef stock. It was well worth the drive from Cary to Carrboro!"

  • "We went to Acme with friends from out of town. Each of us ordered a different dish and everyone was very pleased with what they ordered. I personally recommend the scallops. I can't wait to go back and try another dish."

  • "I have been coming to Acme for dinner regularly on Tuesday nights ever since the half price entree was offered. I have recommended Acme to other friends as well. All of the dishes are wonderfully prepared. The waiters are friendly and welcoming. I hope that the special price offer will last forever. It is best to have an early reservation time to avoid the noise in the dining room."

  • "As always, a wonderful meal and a good experience. Only wish it were not so noisy! But the crowds on Tuesday nights produce a lot of noise. Shows how popular the place is."

  • "used to be a reliable, go-to spot for years but seems to have fallen off. scallops were halved ("people kept complaining they were underdone"), espresso was given without the offer of sugar, vintage on wine was different from what was stated on the menu, oysters on the half shell (six) had shell in every bite, both waiter and manager simply didn't seem to care as much as in years past. it's also always seemed odd that they don't have a seasonal menu, especially in carrboro with such close proximity to both the farmer's market and weaver street. there are so many other restaurants in the area, and in surrounding pittsboro and durham, on which i'd much prefer to spend my money."

  • "We ate an amazing brunch at Acme, so choosing it for dinner was easy. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful, but not intrusive. The food is simply fantastic. Clearly they make great efforts to source local, fresh ingredients. And the kitchen respects the quality of the ingredients as they transform them into delicious dishes. We will go back again and again. I strongly recommend this for anyone who appreciates fine food."

  • "food and service were great but noise level very very bad. There was a wine pairing dinner going on that contributed. We weren't told of the dinner beforehand. Will not return unless I go late in the evening i.e. after 9."

  • "Acme is a neighborhood gem. Tuesday nights are the best as all entrée are $12.95. The service is always good and we enjoy the ambience of sitting next to the windows and watching people on the street."

  • "My fifth time to Acme and it never disappoints. And you can't beat their Tuesday for $12.95 deals."

  • "Acme is quickly becoming our "go to" restaurant in the Chapel Hill area. The food is interesting and the atmosphere is casual and fun. It suits all kinds of people, and the service is fantastic."

  • "I have enjoyed Acme on many occasions and I thoroughly enjoyed my own food. However, I took a group for a business dinner and was very surprised to see no vegetarian entrees on the menu. No one complained to me but I did notice the vegetarians of the group solely ate small plates to avoid meat. I wish there had been a couples vegetarian options for their sake."

  • "Friends recommended The Acme while staying in Chapel Hill--they especially touted the fried chicken. We ate Sunday lunch there and, of course, had to try the chicken, Crisp, not greasy and covered in real pan gravy...and the butterbeans were the best I've ever eaten. Husband had the crab omelet and was very pleased. Oh, and don't forget the homemade doughnuts--divine. All in all, a little bit of Blue Heaven."

  • "From the start to the finish the service was excellent! The food lived up to the reputation with some wonderful twists thrown in on traditional recipes."

  • "I'm a "regular" at ACME and as my title indicates, it never lets me down. The staff are terrific and the food the same. I enjoy bringing new people with me and introducing them to ACME; they are always happy with the choice."

  • "Food was mediocre and served less than warm. Good waiter."
    Dined on 3/4/2014
  • "I ordered crab cakes, collards and skillet cornbread. Initially the crab cakes were cold and I informed the waiter. He took them back and brought them back and the jambalya rice they were on was dry. I tasted the crab cakes and could only taste breading and no crab meat! I sent it back. I was done. I paid for a Mixed drink, bowl of collards and jalepeno cornbread $23.11 + tip and came home hungry. I will say the Jalepeno cornbread was good."

  • "My wife and I are poor grad students. We save and splurge at Acme as often as possible. We absolutely love the food and recommend Acme as our favorite restaurant in the triangle!"

  • "Acme remains my favorite restaurant in the Triangle. The food is consistently good as well as the service, the staff friendly and accommodating. I can visit this restaurant every week and not get tired of its excellent menu."

  • "I made a reservation online for a Thursday night and the only option was 6.30 or 7.45pm. I made it for 6.30 and when we got there were very few other diners. even after 7 they could have accommodated another 3 4 top reservations. my advice would be to call the restaurant directly for reservations vs. relying on online."

  • "The food is great. Menu is local and not overwhelming and can accommodate all tastes. Service was attentive but not overbearing and friendly. Open on Sunday was a real plus. I really enjoy it here."

  • "We had the most wonderful dinner at Acme and we always do. This is our first choice for a place to have a romantic evening, celebration, group event or even a relaxed weekday meal. The food is always interested and delicious, the service is kind and professional and it is always a great value. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone living in the area or anyone traveling looking for a true Carrboro experience."

  • "Acme has great farm to table fare with interesting souther twists. The skillet cornbread and fried green tomato salad were new takes on old classics. It's not your Mama's cornbread....unless she was a really good cook! Tom our server was awesome. The salted caramel apple berry cobbler ala mode was amazing!"

  • "There aren't too many restaurants where game is on the menu and if you're looking for unique entrees, check out ACME. ACME knows how to bring flavors together in a way that makes every dish outstanding. Great service, great atmosphere. It's always a winner in my book."

  • "Last night we were "educated” on how the restaurant functions & the importance of turning tables and timing while dinning. Our wonderful evening starting taking a turn for the worst when the waiter started to take our unfinished dessert plate informing us that our table was needed. Upset, but still happy, we paid our bill and left more then 20% tip. We were almost out the door when the manager felt the need to seek us out and tell us about how we cannot spend 3.5 hours eating our dinner (for 2 women we ordered 5 drinks, 2 entrees, and an appetizer, dessert and coffee) as they had another party that had a reservation & they were unable to seat them. I was dumbfounded that I was being reprimanded about staying too long at the restaurant."

  • "I come to Carrboro every year and one of my favorite restaurants is ACME... but this was one of the worst experiences I've ever had there. At first, the service was good... attentive and informative. Quick with drink orders and explaining specials. We ordered our meals around 6:25p. The appetizers came out around 6:45p. After that, we didn't get our meals until 7:45p... an hour and 20 mins since we ordered! Instead of asking if we wanted more drinks, they just cleared our glasses... and fill our water glasses until we had to flag down the waiter and ask repeatedly to get some. There's plenty of restaurants in the area and this trip was not worth the price for the service... AND the waiter still got a 20% tip because we had 6 in our group."
