Diner Reviews
  • "I'm sure the steaks are great, but I had the filet medallions which were AMAZING. Their sides are stellar, and come in huge portions. I could have made a meal of just sides (we had brussel sprouts and mac & cheese). Huge wine list, but few options under $75. We brought our own bottle and paid the $25 corkage fee."

  • "While looking around the restaurant after diner we ran into server Todd Zietlow who gave us an unexpected impromptu tour leaving a great impression. My wife is planing using the private rooms for future business meetings and will request Todd."

  • "Best meat I have ever experienced. Interesting sides as well!"

  • "There were very long stretches of time when we saw the waiter, he did not check to confirm if steaks were to our satisfaction, he returned too late to take desert order, bread was not replenished without asking and water only at the end of the meal. The Delmonico steaks, mashed potatoes and asparagus were good, but priced too high."

  • "The food and the service were excellent! The filet mignon was melt in your mouth tender and very flavorful. The side dishes are large enough for 2-3 to share. Half portions are also available. Great for special occasions or if you just want to have a nice dinner."

  • "Outstanding food. Great service. Little pricey but food is second to none so you get what you pay for. It was a little noisy but it was a Friday night so it's to be expected"
    Dined on 8/22/2014
  • "Too noisy. Food was great, but not for $100 per person. Wait staff seemed to work well together. Lobster tail was almost rubbery. There was some pretension."

  • "My third time dining there and it didn't seem as good as the first two."
    Dined on 8/22/2014
  • "The steaks were prepared exactly as ordered and melted in your mouth. The lobster Mac and cheese was terrific with huge pieces of lobster meat. This was an anniversary dinner to remember"
    Dined on 8/22/2014
  • "The food was fantastic and the steaks were cooked to perfection."
    Dined on 8/21/2014
  • "God awful expensive, way out of line. Highest priced wine list we have ever seen in St. Louis. The food was actually very good but the prices take away one's enjoyment."

  • "This is a good place for those who are willing to spend $$$$$. I will probably go there again for a special occasion."

  • "You would have to not like food to not like 801 Chophouse. What a great experience! Our waiter was fantastic, the food (filet mignon and prime rib) was cooked to perfection! What is not to like????"
    Dined on 8/20/2014
  • "Extremely overpriced for the product. Ordered a bone n filet for 80.00. It was not super flavorful like it was described and was overcooked. I could have ordered a regular filet for half the price. The side dishes were good but nothing outstanding. Overrated all around."

  • "Our night out to the restaurant was a gift. We had a wonderful dinner. The prime rib was excellent. The side dishes were great. The servings are quite ample. We could not finish all of our meal so our waiter (Christopher) boxed it all for us to take home. THe whole atmosphere of the restaurant was very relaxing. Our waiter, Christopher was great. He explained the different cuts of meat and seafood being offered that evening and how they were prepared. He answered all our questions and was very attentive and accommodating. He was gracious and took our picture to send to our son. He then brought us dessert as an anniversary gift and a menu signed by the staff. I would definitely recommend 801 Chop House ."

  • "The 801 Chophouse was a very nice place to spend our 42nd anniversary. I had seen a review in the newspaper, and when a Groupon became available, I jumped on it! This is an expensive choice, but for a special occasion it was perfect. The entire staff went out of their way to make our celebration memorable. Our server was knowledgeable and so very pleasant to talk with. The night we were there, they were serving several large parties. The noise level was quite high. I don't know if some acoustic materials would help this or not. This is a large restaurant. As a cane user, I wish there were restrooms at both ends of the dining room. We hope to return to 801 Chophouse in the future."

  • "The food was outstanding. All the courses were fantastic... be aware, you get what you pay for. A few small imperfection from the waiters but we were there very late so I understand that by the end of the night they can get tired too. Definitely not bad enough that would prevent us from coming back. We will visit again."

  • "My BF had wonderful Prime Rib! I had the filet topped with lobster. Mine was not as good as his. However, the side dishes were great. Wonderful, we will be back when they have another groupon. Very pricey."

  • "Our favorite - hands down was the mushroom side dish - the halibut was perfectly prepared - the steak was flavorful but not comparable to other steaks we have had in this price range-- we would return but only for special occasions"
    Dined on 8/16/2014
  • "I don't eat steak out that often but that bone-in filet was some of the best meat I've had ever. Loved the mushroom side."

  • "The service was spectacular. Our server helped us make good pairing decisions. The food was perfect"

  • "I booked reservations for an anniversary dinner with my wife, and mentioned the occasion in a note in my Open Table reservation request - when we arrived, they wished us a happy anniversary, and had sprinkled confetti on the table. In addition, we were given specially printed "Happy Anniversary" menus, and a complimentary dessert - very impressive. The food was excellent; started with lobster corn chowder and the tomato/onion salad, which we were both satisfied with. Our steaks were each perfectly done (medium rare and medium), the Boursin mashed potatoes were spectacular, and our server was energetic and helpful. All in all a very good (if expensive) experience."

  • "While the food was fine, the service was not at all on pace with the quality and price of the food."

  • "This place is the ultimate special occasions restaurant. We loved it in all respects. The steak tartare and mussels were fantastic. We ordered the strip steak, prime rib and seafood small combo and all were over the top. I avoided the prime rib because it is cooked medium and i wanted rare but what a mistake. my son got it and it was great, i mean Kreis' great. The prime strip was solid and prepared as ordered with a great sauce. We ordered huge sides i recommend 1/2 orders. The mac and cheese, brussel sprouts and mushrooms were a highlight too. We brought our wine and got a fair 25 dollar corkage. We will definately return. Expect a really big bill this place is expensive be prepared"

  • "I highly recommend the pistachio & Dijon encrusted Lamb Chops - scrumptious. All the side dishes are delicious too. Manager Ian Rockwell always makes every guest feel special."

  • "We arrived on a Tuesday night for dinner with 2 gift certificates in hand that we had bought at a charity auction. We were told that they were for the sunday night menu and not valid that night......whoa! it was not printed on the certificate nor was it noted at the auction. Personally I think the restaurant should reprint their certificates to indicate that and i think they should have honored it that night....not good customer relations! aside from that our food was great and waiter outstanding.....and of course, pricey!"

  • "We loved everything about it. Colleen was great and knowledgable. Everyone on the staff wished us a happy anniversary and that was kind. Our only complaint is that we were seated in the bar area and it is pretty difficult to have a romantic dinner in the middle of the bar."

  • "But I wouldn't be able to afford to eat there on a regular basis. Amazing food, but prices to match"

  • "801 in Clayton is by far the best steakhouse in St. Louis. I have been waiting for a steakhouse with more seafood, as my wife loves. The Halibut dish was terrific and my prime rib was velvet. The pastry chef delivers desserts, if you are lucky enough to dine while she is working, what a sweetie."

  • "This is a great steakhouse! The food is amazing! I ordered the 16oz NY strip and it was cooked to perfection. My lady ordered the filet medallions, which come in a perfect 6oz portion, and she said they were 'melt in your mouth' good. We ordered 2 of the half portion side orders each which ended up being way too much food. The half portions are still enough to feed two hungry people. The staff was so professional and accommodating. The Moët and cheesecake are musts! My only complaint was we were seated right next to 2 LOUD cocktail parties in a booth by the bar and we waited about 10-15 minutes for a waiter.... BUT once he did realize we were there he & the GM went out of their way to make it up to us. We will be back!"

  • "The steaks were great, the sides we chose were not great lyonnaise potatoes were just large chunks of potatoes with sautéed onion slices, and the brussel sprouts were very large, not flavorful and tough."
    Dined on 8/5/2014
  • "The food was cooked to perfection, the dirty martini's were the smoothest we had, and the service was impeccible! We would recommend 801 to everyone that loves steak."
    Dined on 8/3/2014
  • "While the portions were large so were the prices. A completely ala carte menu with +$10 dollar sides and by the glass wine at +$12 made for a steep night even with the groupon discount. I have had as good or better food at prices lower by a third in other St Louis venues,"
    Dined on 8/2/2014
  • "This was our first time at 801 so we really didn't know much about the menu etc. Our waiter was very helpful and we had an excellent meal. It could become one of our favorite restaurants! A bit pricey, but it was worth every penny! My wife's lamb chops were the best she has ever had, even better than those in New Zealand! And I chose the fillet over the prime rib and was not disappointed!"

  • "Food was delicious. Had the calamari appetizer and it was great different from any I have had before. Grand marnier soufflé was delicious as well and everything else in between."
    Dined on 8/1/2014
  • "Wonderful food but spendy! Wine list extensive but bottles $10-30 more than identical item on other wine lists around town. Our waitress steered us to a decent $40 Malbec so we were somewhat mollified. Special occasion spot; noisy!"
    Dined on 8/1/2014
  • "We went to 801 the other night and got a filet and a strip while we shared two sides. The meat was cooked to our requested temperature meanwhile the sides had won our taste buds over. The Boursin mashed potatoes and the mushroom pan roast, which also had Boursin cheese on them, we're delicious. I think we would go back and just order appetizers and sides."

  • "Great steak and the ambiance was wonderful for a wedding anniversary. The halibut was okay, but my husbands steak was to die for. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for couples that want a romantic dinner!"
