Diner Reviews
  • "I have been wanting to go to 801 for quite a while and just never got around to it. "It's kind of expensive" is the excuse that I used. And it was, however the bone on filet with a side of brussel sprouts and garlic mashed potatoes was quite possible one of the best meals I have had in KC and I have lived here all my life. (And yes I have been to, Ruth Chris (now closed), Herford House, Jess & Jims and all the other steak places.) I can't wait to go back. Oh by the way the service was excellent, they have a great selection of bourbons and a great atmosphere. The only complaint I have is they put too much lemon in the cheesecake but what fun would it be if you couldn’t find at least one thing to complain about"

  • "Excellent except for the Sea Bass was slightly overcooked and lacked flavor."

  • "We have dined at 801 numerous times and without exception each time was excellent. Their appetizers are quite delicious as is the chophouse salad. The steaks are cooked to perfection each and every time. It has become one of our favorite steakhouses in KC."

  • "We went for an anniversary dinner and received special menus with Happy Anniversary written across the top, and the table had fun celebration confetti on it when we arrived. Our waiter was very helpful and humorous."

  • "the food was excellent - everything is a la carte - so be sure to check out the menu first - it is pricey went to celebrate my birthday a bit early and they decorated the table and also gave me a lovely giant piece of cheese cake on a decorated plate!! thank you our steaks were cooked to perfection - which is always great the sides we had were yummy lovely salad and fries be sure to order the onion rings one of the best order of onion rings we have ever had"

  • "I was at the convention center with some friends and we were looking for a good steak place. We were happy to see that they are within walking distance of the convention center. The atmosphere was nicer than most restaurants that I have been to. We had a party of 5 and they gave us a nice private room. Outstanding wait help and wonderful food. My steak had a great flavor... a tiny bit over the temp I requested but sill pretty good. Its a bit pricey but worth it for a once in a long while visit."

  • "This is overall a very good restaurant. I was very hesitant to order the bone in filet. They are very difficult to prepare properly, I asked my server and she assured me it would be done correctly. I ordered medium rare plus which I was told would be a warm-hot red center. When I received it the center was red and below room temperature, actually cold. Very disappointing. The rest of the meal was great, they did not charge me for the steak which was nice. I might come back especially for the wine list, but I would not order a bone in Filet."

  • "801 was a terrific place for our anniversary. The food, service and atmosphere was great. The 36 oz. Ribeye was a monster eith a 24" bone attached. I felt like Fred Flinstone. The meat melted in your mouth. We also had the hashbrowns with cheese and it was delicious as well as the Chocolate Lava Cake with Ice Cream on top. A memeorable evening of fine dining."

  • "My husband and I have ate here twice now and have been impressed both times. Being from NE I am very particular about my prime-rib and have not found any place in KC that I can enjoy a good cut. Until NOW!! Melt in your mouth, perfect! Don't need to add a thing to it. Service was wonderful. Never needed to ask for anything, but you can enjoy your company without being interrupted every 10 minutes. Highly recommend..especially for those special occasions."

  • "We were celebrating our anniversary and it was wonderful. I let them know ahead of time it was a special occasion and they had decorative confetti on the table and the menu was headed with an anniversary greeting. The service was outstanding and the food even better. The sides were generous and our entrees cooked perfectly to order. The only caution is if you are looking for a quiet restaurant be careful not to reserve a table on the same night as an event at the Sprint Center. The restaurant was full and noisy until after 8:00 when the concert began. If you are going to reserve a table for the same night, just make it later in the evening. No matter, the food was great and the drinks superb. We had a wonderful anniversary!"

  • "When you dine at the 801 Chophouse you will be treated with one of the best wine lists in town, the highest quality food (in generous portions) and the very best service. We have never been disappointed in any aspect of our dining experiences."

  • "We go to 801 Chophouse on special occasions. On this occasion, we were celebrating my husband's birthday. Upon arrival, we were shown to our table and it was decorated a bit and the menus were customized in honor of my husband's birthday. They are also very accommodating, as we frequently share meals or salads and they always split it in half in the kitchen, so we don't have to do it at the table."

  • "First time visiting and it was really top drawer. The service was great - Lou knew everything about the menu and she was super helpful regarding the specials. The food was everything you'd expect at a top steakhouse - fresh, cooked perfectly and tasty to the last bite. We'll be back!"

  • "It's a pricey steak house but the 801 prime rib we got was huge and delicious. The sides were good but expected a little bigger portions for the price. Dessert was big and delicious. Restaurant was not busy yet still the waitress was not very attentive."

  • "We were visiting from out of town and wanted to have a nice dinner near the Sprint Center before a show there. 801 is only a block away and is absolutely fantastic. Food, service, and atmosphere were superb. I can't imagine any of the other establishment in that neighborhood surpassing it."

  • "We went for our 15th anniversary and had great service. We went really early so we were probably the only ones in the restaurant at the time. The food was very good. The only down side, for us anyway, is that it is a pricey restaurant. So, this is not a place that we can frequent very often."

  • "The wine list is excellent, the sides teriffic and the steaks cooked to order!"

  • "From the moment we sat down we were treated to probably the best service I've experienced in KC. The staff was extremely attentive and helpful, yet you barely notice them there during most of the meal. And of course the food was fantastic from start to finish. We had great appetizers, great salads, great steaks and fresh fish, great sides, and then great desserts to finish the meal off right! There is a distinct chance you will over indulge and also spend a lot, but totally worth it for a large group or for a special occasion."

  • "After our first trip to 801 the manager contacted me and offered ample reimbursement for our mediocre experience. We decided to go last minute at 10:00 on a Saturday night. The food was great & so was Mark our server. I had the 801 prime rib & it was enormous-I barely ate a quarter of it. My partner had the KC strip with marrow butter & was also very pleased. We shared a small order of brussels sprouts and fried zucchini-also excellent. This time our server offered us a half order of the sides which hadn't been an option before. Even with a half order of each side we still had plenty to take home. We finished with the soufflé, a 20 year tawny and a vintage port. Overall, a much better experience :)"

  • "Being from Chicago I was not impressed with their steak, NY Strip 16 oz - not as tender or flavorful as I expected. Oysters were very small for $3 a piece. Sides were excellent. Ordered manhattan with very light vermouth - mine looked like a coke."

  • "Everything about our dining experience was amazing! The general manager even gave us a tour of the restaurant since it was our first time. Our server was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and personable. And the food was beyond great, especially the gnocchi!"

  • "Food was great, service is what I expected, excellent. Yes, this is not a cheap date. If you wanted a chain restaurant bill and experience, this is not it. Its great steak, service, and atmosphere. Priced accordingly. When in K.C. I'll be back"

  • "My husband and I made a reservation online for 801 Chophouse and mentioned in the notes it would be our Anniversary. The staff welcomed us with warm greetings, the table was preset with confetti and special anniversary menus. The wine and food were delicious and overall the evening was outstanding."

  • "While it is pricey, it is well worth it for special occasions. The food is fabulous! We celebrated our 5th anniversary and arrived to find our table decorated and a special menu that had "Happy Anniversary" on it. we also got a free dessert, which had "Happy Anniversary" spelled out in chocolate on the side of the bowl. For some reason, it took awhile to get our main courses. But this has not been our experience in the past."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Very nice ambiance and service, but extremely expensive for the food that you get. Yes, portions are generous, but there are other steakhouses around where you can get better steaks at much better prices. It is definitely a special-occasion kind of place, but I would still choose to go somewhere else."
