Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant is very expensive, but for a special occasion it cannot be beat. Everything was just outstanding-the food, the bartender (Kay) and the ambiance. We like to eat our dinner at the bar when traveling so we can talk with other travelers and locals. We learn so much about an area this way. Our bartender/waitress was Kay, and she is outstanding. She is very knowledgeable about the menu. I highly recommend the 801Chophouse!"

  • "A bit on the pricey side but delivers value for the money: food meets the standard for such places, excellent service, great atmosphere for a quiet dinner with friends or special occasion. Certainly merits an encore. Will hope to see the 'reasonably affordable' offerings on the wine list expand a bit by then."

  • "We chose an early reservation (5:30pm) because of tickets at the Midland Theater (2 1/2 blocks away). The service was excellent and the food was excellent. They are a "beef" place so we all opted for those choices. I did the prime rib, the others chose fillets or beef medallions. The beef medallions were over cooked, but everything else was correct. The sides are huge!!! They say they could share with two but the broccoli and hash browns could serve three. The desserts were excellent and there is a reasonable wine choice, both by the bottle or by the glass."

  • "Everything about this restaurant was amazing! Except the price. But the food was outstanding. Easily the best steaks I've ever had. The food was absolutely delicious and our waiter was outstanding!"

  • "We make an effort to get to 801 whenever we are in KC. It is always a pleasure from start to finish. Service is great, attentive, but not hovering. The menu has unique sides and appetizers. The food is very tasty and the steaks are always melt-in-your mouth great. The atmosphere is generally relaxing and unassuming. A great choice always!"

  • "A group of us were attending the Big !2 Men's Basketball Tournament. Very convenient for a dinner before the games. Most all had steaks......very good and cooked to perfection for each person. Server was great. We will be back."

  • "Great food & great service. Good place to dine in a city that is covered with good food. Can't miss with this place."

  • "We went to 801 Chophouse for our 29th anniversary. The restaurant was everything I had hoped for - great food, great service, adult eating without being snobbish. I had lamb chops. I assume a restaurant only puts lamb on the menu if they know what to do with it and it was wonderful. My husband was very impressed with his salmon. Everything is ala carte, but side dishes will serve 3 or 4 diners, so choose wisely. Our food was served very quickly - especially when you consider they have a scratch kitchen. We will definately be going back."

  • "Everything was great. Nicholas was our server and he was exceptional. We had a beautiful dinner experience. Thanks to the chef and all the staff for this wonderful experience. Thank you."

  • "Which is what I can complain about. Went to the restaurant for an anniversary and went into this knowing it was going to be expensive to dine here, and I don't generally dine at these establishments. However, I received in return every penny paid. The staff was extremely friendly, explained all questions, helpful in selections and very attentive. I would say that this is one of the best dining experiences I have had. When the oppurtunity comes back up to treat myself, this will be in the forefront of my selection choice."

  • "We have dined at 801 Chop House three times now. Last year we were in a party of 16. Had superb service even with the large party. At this time we discovered the food to excellent! The next visit was my husband and my anniversary. Once again service, food and the atmosphere were super! This last visit was for my husband's birthday. We had a party of 6 and had a table in a semi-private area added to the fun evening and the atmosphere of what we were celebrating. The waiter was great and his attentiveness helped with the celebration. I would recommend this restaurant to ALL!!!!!"

  • "Had the steak tar tar for an appetizer. Not sure it was my thing. I had the 16 oz ribeye with italian herbs. I had mine medium well and it was so flavorful! The herbs did not overpower the meat flavor which is just the way a like my steaks. My steak was $52. My Husband had the most expensive & largest steak- a 24 oz porterhouse with a special morel butter addition ($12). He mentioned that his was extremely tender and juicy. His cost $62. Our waitress told us that the sides were enough to share & not to double up. Boy, she wasn't kidding! Mashed potatoes $10, and asparagus $12 could have served 4 people easily. All items are al e carte which I guess is normal for an upscale restaurant. We're not familiar with these types of restaurants."

  • "Made a last minute change of reservations to 801 Chop House and it was well worth it. Everything from the ambience, service and food was amazing. Highly recommend this to anyone in the KC, P&L district looking for a great meal and everything that should go with it."

  • "Best steaks we've ever had, which is why we continue to go back to 801. It's a little on the pricey side, but well worth it to get great food and service."

  • "Took a business associate to this place in hope of treating him to a good KC prepared steak. Dinner was incredibly underwhelming. Steak not prepared well for multiple guests, desserts below average at best, and overall way Lee's than expected for the large payout at the end."

  • "There are many spots to go to for an expensive intimate dinner in Kansas City, but our dinner at 801 Chophouse was the best dinner experience we have had for a steak, special dinner in a long time. Plenty of servers, varied menu between delicious steaks and seafood and the sides variety were wonderful and plentiful to share for several. No lengthy delays between courses but never rushed. Highly recommend to any looking for a wonderful dinner experience."

  • "After eating at many noteable steakhouses I believe 801 delivered the best steak and overall food experience, better than Ruth's Chris, without a doubt!"

  • "801 Chophouse is the best high end steakhouse in Kansas City. Prime steaks (nice seafood selections too) and great wine . . .perfect for a special occasion or entertaining clients/guests!"

  • "Ate here while staying at the Hilton President just a block or two away. Best steak I've had in the past year, and I go out for steak fairly often. Had a 12 ounce filet and mashed potatoes but I wish I had ordered even more. Colleague had the lobster corn chowder which he really enjoyed. I'm not from KC and I'm sure there are many other great steakhouses there, but this one is definitely worth visiting, especially if you're staying right downtown."

  • "Delicious steak, perfect scallops, surprisingly tasty lobster corn dog and wonderful creme brule"

  • "It was a nice experience overall, the food was great and our Steaks were cooked PERFECT....really fine restaurant. Large wine list with a price range from 30 to 600 for bottles and 9-15 per glass. It was restaurant week in Kansas City and the menu provided for the event was 33 dollars for a three course dinner which was a nice surprise at such a nice restaurant."

  • "I selected from the Restaurant Week menu--potato & leek soup & filet, creme brulee for dessert. My husband got the raw oyster appetizer, veal, and chocolate cake for dessert. The food and service was top notch! I understand the desserts are all made in-house. My husband loved the desserts; I wasn't as impressed as I was with the rest of my meal, but I still gave them 5 stars!"

  • "... not worth the price. Don't get me wrong, the blue cheese dressing on my salad was maybe the best I've ever had, and my steak was so tender it could be cut with a fork, and my martini was delicious, but as an entire meal, I don't think it's worth the price. (We went for Restaurant Week, so we only paid half of what it would have normally cost, and I still didn't think it was worth it.) But, I'd gladly go back for martinis and a salad! (The sides that came with my steak were super boring. Simply as a coincidence, I had made Brussels sprouts for dinner the night before and was told by the people at dinner with me that mine were much better than what the fancy steakhouse was serving. I'm flattered, but that's disappointing for them.)"

  • "My best friend and I went here during restaurant week. The last time I dined here was a few years ago. All I remembered from last time was how juicy and tender the filet mignon was as well as the creaminess of the garlic mashed potatoes. I was not disappointed this time either. We both had the filet mignon with the garlic mashed potatoes and it was delicious! I was very excited for my friend to try it and she loved it. Overall the food was amazing, our servers were friendly and courteous, and the atmosphere was nice and quiet."

  • "The food was great. However our waiter was tired and you could tell he was ready to go home. He did check on us and male sure we had all we needed. Lastly as we were leaving no one was at the front and we had to go in the coat check room to get our coats."

  • "I have eaten at two 801's (KC and Omaha) and neither disappointed. Both are old-school steakhouses - think dark wood and red wine- doing the basics very well. We ate during restaurant week and selected the standards from the limited menu - wedge salad, filet with potatoes, asparagus and bernaise and creme brulee for dessert. All were well prepared and nicely presented. I look forward to returning to try the rest of the menu."

  • "Although my five friends and I were there for Restaurant Week, we were also given the full menu, which looked AMAZING. The low score for food stems from my pork chop being overcooked, my brussels sprouts being burned, and the off-tasting fruit sorbet. My friends who had the filet or the salmon had no complaints, and after tasting their plates, I fully understand why. I'd go back because the mini-private room we had off the bar was a great location, and because the service is outstanding."

  • "The food was generally good but nothing to write home about. Temps on the meat courses did not match what was ordered but our server was delightful and handled everything well. Since this was restaurant week and we had a concert to attend we chose the fixed price limited menu. Hopefully it was not totally representative of the usual offerings at 801. The Wedge salad would have been just a chunk of lettuce without the add-ons of bleu cheese crumbles and bacon. This was a first time to check out 801 and while the food was not inspiring, I think we would both return for at least a 2nd try."

  • "There are a number of decent places to get a steak in Kansas City, but 801 Chophouse (both locations) blows all of the competition away. With amazing sides (I highly recommend the lobster Mac & Cheese) and a great seafood selection 801 doesn't limit itself to meat eaters only (great for groups). That being said the steaks are definitely the highlight of the meal, and in my humble opinion the best in Kansas City. The only problem I have ever encountered was when a fellow diner decided the sauce on his 24oz porterhouse was too rich (after eating about 1/3 of it...) the waiter took it away and brought a completely new steak immediately. 801 always has truly exceptional service to go along with what are always truly exceptional meals."

  • "A group of 6 of us came to 801 Chophouse for Restaurant Week and for my mother-in-law's 60th birthday party. My wife and I had been to 801 Chophouse one other time, but nobody else in the group had ever been before. The service was excellent, catering to a fun loving group yet keeping it a very formal occasion. The food - despite being an absolutely jam-packed restaurant due to Restaurant Week's fabulous fixed-price (at a very low rate) menu - was somehow even better than the service. The soups and salads came out well prepared and flavorful. The steaks, as they were the first time, were the best I've ever had. The desserts were absolutely delightful. Thanks!"

  • "Had the 6 oz filet as part of restaurant week. The food was delicious and the wine list was great. Steak was perfectly cooked, and even though I know I didn't need it...I wish the portions of sides were larger! For dessert, I had the chocolate cake, which was very rich and a good way to end the meal."
