  • "Four of us visited on a Monday evening about 6:45 and as expected at that time, no wait at all. We ate at a peninsula at the oyster bar. Oysters were very good. Our sucker, Jacob, beside being fast and efficient was fun, witty and added a lot to the experience. The character & ambiance was just ordinary. In fact the restaurant in general seemed drab & worn. It was a lot like any other mid priced eatery anywhere. The women's restrooms were clean but a bit in need of refurbishing. Keep the clever quotes. The large entrance planters were absolutely beautiful!"

  • "The selections for restaurant week were solid as were the wine pairings. The service was on point and friendly. It was an enjoyable visit to a Raleigh institution."

  • "Food was excellent, except the key lime pie. It was not the best I have eaten. For a romantic dinner, as listed, it has too much noise and hustle bustle for anything romantic. (Maybe we are too old). Can't imagine what it would be like if the restaurant had been full. Server was great, very personable, helpful and attentive. We wondered why it has been so long since we last ate there. Nice outing!"

  • "One of our favorite get away date night restaurant! Never disappoints! A fun place for a late dinner. We love the oysters and the blackened bacon wrapped scallops. Love it!"

  • "We went for dinner during Downtown Raleigh Restaurant Week. The appetizer (scallops) and the wine were very good, but the rest of the meal was quite a disappointment. I ordered the "Shrimp and Lump Crabmeat with Sauteed Red Bell Pepper served in a roasted poblano cream sauce." What I got was a large lump of creamy pasta (not mentioned in the entree description at all!) with a few small, boring shrimp and a few bits of crab that were about the size of a pencil eraser. The key lime pie was not good at all -- a premade, tasteless graham cracker crust and lime filling that was quite dull. This was our first trip to 42nd Street Oyster Bar (we are relatively new to the area) and it will also be our last. For $100+, we expected much better."

  • "42nd Street had an excellent menu for restaurant week, we enjoyed some popular dishes. Casual dining, but can dress up and appreciated the live music with drinks later that Friday night."

  • "Good selection of raw oysters, and cooked oysters were tasty as well."

  • "We celebrated an anniversary Friday night. The food was fabulous, atmosphere engaging, and our waiter, Darren, was knowledgeable, attentive, and personable."

  • "I made our reservation a week in advance for a party of 8. We got there to find out they plopped us in front of the door, at the oyster bar, in bar stools. For a "fine" dining establishment if you are going to put 50+age women in wobbly bar stools a notification should be made. We expressed our dissatisfaction immediately and was told by the waitress there was nothing they could do. No apology, no nothing! Just embarrassing for me as I had highly recommended the restaurant to my friends. Don't think they'll be back."

  • "We chose the prix fixe menu. I was disappointed that pimento oysters was on the oyster sampler. Too heavy and can't taste the oyster. The cioppino was not the same as I last had. It was not the well seasoned broth I had before, instead it was tomato, onion and green pepper overwhelming the seafood. My husband got the scallops wrapped in bacon but wanted the bacon crisper. He said his swordfish was ok but didn't like the mango salsa."

  • "Our 3rd visit here this year was just as good as the previous two."
    Dined on 8/21/2014
  • "We were very disappointed with the oysters being too small and muddy. The Cioppino was a bad tomato basil soup with undercooked shrimp, some raw. The clam chowder was weak with a chicken stock taste. The swordfish was very dry and bland. The shrimp and crabmeat fettuccine was good, this was enjoyable. Very disappointed in the restaurant, especially for the high price. The wait staff at the oyster bar was wonderful and deserve praise for a good job. We will not come back!"

  • "In general, the food has really gone downhill: went for Restaurant week special menu: baked oysters were uneven--some overdone, some underdone: main courses were very poor: seafood and pasta was cold and the sauce tasted of flour: the piece of swordfish was miniscule and the sauce cold: deserts were excellent and service was attentive"

  • "Wow, so unusual...the shrimp cocktail was soggy/lack luster. The clams weren't super fresh, as they usually were! The oysters were just ok..."

  • "We went for the restaurant week specials and for the price the food was exceedingly ample and delicious. the wine pairings were excellent and the addition of the wine was very reasonable. We will go back, it was that good"

  • "We went for Raleigh Restaurant Week. The restaurant was full of folks that seemed to be having a good time and enjoying their experience. The menu was great. the baked clams appetizer was fantastic and enough for a meal on its own (6 clams, 3 different kinds). we chose the wine paring which was delightful. Our wait staff (sorry the I cannot remember her name) was helpful, courteous and provided just the right about of checking in with us."

  • "Arrived a bit early for our 5:30 reservations to dine with friends during Raleigh restaurant week. Seated immediately at a cozy booth. Selected the 3-course meal with wine pairings. Bacon-wrapped scallops, cioppino (tomato-based stew with shrimp, oysters, mussels, scallops, white fish) and finished off with a delightful wedge of key-lime pie and coffee. Amazing meal at a reasonable price."

  • "If you're a seafood lover, the oyster bar is the place to be. Arrive early or make a reservation to get table-style seating at the oyster bar (seats 4-6). Completely different atmosphere than the main dining room area (informal v. formal) and some menu items are only available at the oyster bar, but both are an amazing dining experience. Staff is personable but professional and the excellent service made our meal that much more enjoyable."

  • "6 of us dined here on a busy Friday night. Service was prompt and efficient from the moment we sat down. Our dishes included sautéed crab cakes, fried scallops, surf and turf, baked grouper. All were delicious and extremely fresh. Martini a and specialty drinks were yummy and there is a decent beer list. We all enjoyed the band that was playing too!"

  • "Been there several times and was disappointed in my food, couple with us liked their meal but mine was not good, very bland even though it said spiced shrimp and my husbands fish was very overdone. Will have to think twice before going back. We each had one drink and that was good."

  • "I had a large party, that changed in size many times, but 42nd Street was so flexible and understanding of our needs. Everyone I spoke to one the phone was so accommodating; all requests were granted. We were taken care of by a few members of the waitstaff team, which was nice as there were many of us. Our food was prompt and delicious! They were also able to make sure the children at the table were able to order and eat their dinner before the adults. Overall, a fantastic experience. After trying to make reservations at many different restaurants in Downtown Raleigh, 42nd Street will now be my go-to for my large party events!"

  • "42nd Street is by far the best place for Seafood in the entire Raleigh NC area. I've tried other places, but we always say "we should have just gone to 42nd Street!""

  • "My parents don't live in Raleigh but when they come to visit, they love going to 42nd Street; they are both from the coast and don't get to visit often so the next best place to get seafood is here. We always since at the raw bar and with out a doubt, get the best service every time! The menu had a great variety, the servers are very knowledgeable and the atmosphere is fantastic. Thank you 42nd Street for always having the best at everything every single time we come!!"

  • "My wife and I have been there a few times and have a very good experience each time. A reservation is a must if you want to plan your evening. The best sea food we have had since moving here from NY. I had the blackened Salmon, with shrimp and scallops all cooked just right and the flavor of the Salmon was wonderful. My wife had the Scallops and they were cooked right on also. We were early so we sat in the bar area. The waitress there was kind and attentive as was our waitress at our table. There were four of us for dinner and we all enjoyed our meals and the atmosphere. We will certainly be back for more."

  • "We were celebrating the 87th birthday of a family member; we had planned ahead with reservations for the evening. Upon arrival we had to wait several minutes for our table to be set up and the bar and lobby area only had "high-top" chairs which were unmanageable for an elderly woman who moves with the assistance of a cane. Then once we were taken to our table we experienced the same problem - "high-top" table and chairs which were inappropriate. We then had to wait another 20 minutes for another table. While the food was great the evening just didn't start off the best for a celebratory evening."

  • "The waitress was great, very nice and personable. Made recommendations and did a fine job. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. It was just okay. I wasn't very impressed. It was on par with Red Lobster. Maybe I was expecting too much."

  • "Excellent restaurant with fabulous, fresh seafood and excellent service. 42nd Street never disappoints. The quality of the food is amazing. Love the ahi tuna that's flown in daily. Also the scallops in brown butter sauce are amazing. Love this place!"

  • "Like fine vintage wines, this place has done the impossible, gotten better through the years. I started eating here when the building was across the street and the food was outstanding. From this small red edifice which catered to the neighborhood types, it has expanded under the tutelage of Mrs. Eure to an establishment that takes second seat to NONE! The seafood is exquisitely prepared, just out of the ocean fresh, and served by a wait-staff that is both engaging and knowledgeable! Life sent me to various parts of the world for many years, now returned to the Raleigh area for good (I hope) My wife Petra and I decided to revisit out old pal this past week. Like Heaven, it was wonderful, better than remembered and pure pleasure!"
