  • "After finding this gem in the RDU airport we were excited to finally make the hour drive to the actual restaurant. I loved the wide selection of local beers and indulged in an IPA. We ordered the calamari for an appetizer and weren't very impressed. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something I'd order again. For entrees, my wife got the traditional shrimp and grits which is what we both got at RDU a year ago. I got the recommended pan seared scallops. The shrimp and grits weren't like we remembered them, but they were still very good. I felt the scallops are tough and probably over-cooked. Overall, maybe our expectations were too high going in, but we left with full bellies; however, unsatisfied with the overall taste of the food"

  • "We came in for a Father's Day dinner and ate at one of the oyster bar tables. Our children are 11 & 8. First, the selection for the kids was great. So nice for it not to just be chicken nuggets and burgers. One had fried shrimp and the other had grilled chicken, both delicious. My husband and I shared steamed oysters and they were fabulous. Our server was engaging, polite and very knowledgeable. It was nice to be able to take my husband out to a nice Father's day dinner, but somewhere young kids were comfortable too. A great balance for our evening."

  • "Great hushpuppies and seafood bisque. Oysters had no flavor and shirmp were fair at best. Ahi tuna on the salad had no flavor. This was the first time in over 8 years we had been back to 42nd street because there are so many more places to get good seafood in Raleigh. We will continue to go elsewhere... I do want to say that the staff was great and very accommodating."

Wife opted for green tomatoes small plate with pimento and ahi (sounds strange but tasted good). Plenty of patrons but service was well timed and friendly. Definitely worth return trip."

  • "Hosted family members from the wine country in California. They were impressed. That says something when your local best-rated restaurant is "The French Laundry." I am from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and was disappointed that you did not have soft shell crabs (June 20). They were listed as a special the week before. IMO, you could have had frozen soft shells on hand. When properly prepared-- which you have served to me there before-- I cannot tell the difference. I had crab cakes, which were very good. But wished they were somewhat larger. Yes, I know, the crab harvest is way down this season on DELMARVA."

  • "Disappointing - food was mediocre for the price. 2 people @ table ordered fried oysters. One of them found several shells in the oysters and had to stop eating them. Waitress forgot our sides; had to be flagged down and requested and then 1 at the table still never got their side item. The 42nd St cheesey potato is good but you got maybe 5 or 6 bites and served out of a small throw-away aluminum pan so you couldn't get much of the potato in the pan anyway. Just expected much more for the prices. For one at our table this was their first visit; after meal said they don't care to go back. Management did comp the meal for the person who found several shells in the fried oysters, so that was good."

I was looking forward to awesome seafood - but when I requested to have my shrimp grilled - I was told that it wasn't possible to have grilled shrimp - only sautéed or fried. The shrimp that I received was grocery store shrimp at best - small and tasteless. Another person at my table ordered the 42nd st platter. I love FL Groper - but this had zero taste. I expected a better experience."

We arrived to see a line waiting for tables, it was a good thing we had reservations. The hostess took us directly to our table with no waiting. It was a pleasant evening and the food was good."

Making and confirming reservations online was easy. We were seated promptly, enjoyed friendly, attentive service, and most importantly great food. My husband delighted in the oyster sampler, my daughter devoured crab legs with the deftness of a pro, and my son hoarded a whole basket of hush puppies. Even I, a coastal SC native, was thoroughly satisfied with the fried oysters I had. We will definitely be back."

  • "I had to rate this based on Father's Day when it was kid-friendly, but I was amazed how the kids at other tables were never were intrusive, just freaking cute. We've also been here for company dinners, 42nd Street Oyster Bar is a classic. my dad usually gets the oysters, but this time he got the raw clams. I tried one for the first time, and I am a convert. Everything was perfect. Yummy dessert too."

  • "We are fans of 42nd Street Oyster Bar and return often. On this night we had grilled chicken, fried flounder, salmon and blackened grouper. All of our meals were very good to excellent. Our server, Darren, was pleasant and always there when needed. The restaurant must have an excellent server training program because the service is consistently excellent. The hush puppies were terrific. On a busy night before Father's Day the restaurant seated us in a back booth promptly at 6:30 pm as promised. They are terrific at honoring their reservations. A long wait could be in store if you don't call in advance."

She said it was amazing. The server was just okay-a smile on her face would have improved our dining experience. We thought it might be because we were two women dining alone. We felt she would have been more responsive if we had a male with us. Othersiwe we really enjoyed our dinner."
