Zuni Caesar salad
Chicken for Two
roasted in the brick oven; warm bread salad with scallions, garlic, frilly mustard greens, dried currants, and pine nuts (approximately 60 minutes)
with Manchego cheese, paprika almonds, and citrus vinaigrette
Didn’t like to be tucked in the small room with all the table busy when the rest of the other area were empty. But the chicken rock as usual! Service was good .
Everything was fantastic and consistent over 25 years
What a treat to be back at Zuni after a long time away! Our Saturday lunch was perfect: a selection of oysters, the kale farro salad, the new potatoes and coppa, and then the juicy burger with small order of addictive shoestring fries. All with pear cider. Our server was training a new person, and we could see the attention to detail and patience. It made us appreciate the careful and thoughtful service always provided at Zuni, which matches the quality of the food in excellence. We never felt rushed or ignored, just happy to be enjoying such a fine meal. A joyful return to a San Francisco classic!
Service is very good but there’s a 25% surcharge to enhance payment to workers. Seems extreme to me
Zuni is consistent. This seems to be my highest praise for a restaurant. The staff is well-trained, service efficient and the kitchen executes dishes very well. The menu is focused and definitely based on local ingredients. The room is always a gorgeous mood of exposed brick and open flame ovens.
Great! Excellent service and ambiance.
The food was great as ever. Unfortunately, Zuni needs a better selection of good affordable wines. They have been relying too long on their wine procurer, who does not seem to understand the zuni clientele. The offerings in the moderate price range are not all that good. There are many California wines that are much better and much more affordable than what Zuni currently offers. I'd even volunteer to help them select a few to include in their list.
First time back inside Zuni, since COVID. Worth the wait, if missed!
The Zuni brunch menu has some unexpected and remarkable combinations, with a "fallback" for the less adventurous to a lovely hamburger.
Service and food great. This is a minor criticism: for an establishment of this level, bar uses glassware more appropriate for a dive bar. Poor quality of drinks. They had 3 people behind the bar and drink ordered required a cocktail shaker, bartender simply poured the alcohol directly into the serving glass and stirred. We went there only for the amazing chicken dish for two. Next time I will stick to drinking water only.
Our first course arrived before the wine, and we had to go looking for the server to track down the wine. And then she delivered something to the table that we hadn’t ordered.
Great food, great service, great cocktails. The chicken absolutely lived up to the hype.
This restaurant always exceeds my expectations. The food is delicious. We had the roast chicken dinner and it is literally the definition of comfort food. Also excellent cocktails.
What a treat - going out to lunch with my sister! From the moment I walked into Zuni, I felt welcomed. From the hostess to the waiter, to the bus people to the bartenders, everyone was warm and friendly. The food was delicious, as were the margaritas and dessert! We walked out very happy and satisfied.
Perfect lunch at Zuni. The food was great and the service was spot on. Sitting outside an watching the passing streetcars was delightful.
Wine was overpriced considering quality: 14$ for about a third of a glass of tepid, sour rose. Other diner sent back chicken dish as under-cooked, but didn't try it myself. Fennel sausage dish seemed as though it had been sitting in the kitchen awhile, maybe waiting for chicken dish to get cooked. Caesar salad a bit soggy, croutons hard and not too tasty. Shoestring potatoes not hot and also a bit tasteless.
Don't understand why it was so hard to make a reservation when so many tables were unoccupied when I was there.
Liked it better when had lunch there October, 2019.
The menu was extremely basic and the food was not good enough. All the prices are sustained in "how organic is the food" but not in its quality.
Micheal was a wonderful guide.
Absolutely outstanding food, drink, and service! We will be back.
A classic SF restaurant. Everything you would want: great food, service, ambiance and character.
First of all, I’m in the hospitality business - I grew up in a restaurant and worked fine dining back of the house for years. I don’t do reviews and have always ignored prompts to do so. We always preached ‘solve the problem while the customer is still there’ - of course to do that someone has to be aware there is an issue. I get it - later seatings can be a different work environment that don’t happen at the beginning of service or during the rush but 9:00 is different from the universally despised party five minutes before closing. Management doing checkout tasks and chefs off the line I understand. I used to work for a chef that said ‘last table as good as the first’ but that is harder than it sounds a lot of the time.
Some dishes aren’t to my taste and I also get that and I can usually tell if my criticism is design or execution. I usually order several appetizers and sides just to try them out. Cost isn’t an issue but perception of value is. Unfortunately my judgement of Zuni is that with the exception of the persimmon appetizer the meal was half assed. The cheese on the anchovy app was quite good and the Caesar the old classic. The sole dish was properly cooked but listless and the duck was just ok (the turnips were great). Cocktails were good.
There it ends. Service was end of shift diner. Our waiter left dirty silverware between courses (I was a little surprised at paper topped tables at that price point) which irked me and no one came to check on anything until a few minutes after we finished our entrees. Wine would have been ordered if anyone bothered to ask. When she got around to clearing plates she told us someone was supposed to take care of us while she was on her break. No desserts. No one asked us how our meal was or thank you or goodnight. Had they done so I would have complained and not written this.
I expected better.
We dislike the forced 25% “service charge.” To then ask for an additional tip is a bit much.
Love that they are spacing diners at every other table due to the pandemic. The ambiance for lunch was relaxed and perfect for talking. Loved the Caesar salad, bread, and of course the roast chicken. The chicken was moist and flavorful! The hot bread salad was tangy and a perfect compliment.
Just a little tip, eat the chicken five hours later at room temperature and it is divine and still so tender! We didn’t think the shoestring fries was all that good- it wasn’t crunchy and needed salt. But everything else was excellent, including our waiter.
great to be back after 25+ years - as god as I remember.
loved our darling waitress.
We’ve been long term customers for two decades but it was very different at Zuni today. Can understand the impact of the pandemic but the usual excellent Zuni hospitality was not there anymore. We were friends with many of the servers and have met with the owners many times before the pandemic.
Today we’ve experienced dismissive and arrogant attitudes from the chef and the server Edward when we tried to offer some compliments and constructive criticism. We waited almost 30 minutes for the main dish and we were told by the server to “wait and enjoy”. Wasn’t sure what to enjoy??? Especially when we were waiting and saw the chef walking a dog outside the restaurant, really??? It was a huge disappointment!
Great hosts, great food, Kevin provided us with a first class service. The crayons were a bonus!!
Zuni has a warm place in my heart. The Ceasar salad, anchovies, heirloom tomatoes, pizza and pan fried petrale sole were all delicious. Our server was gracious. It was a perfect lunch.
Hands down favorite SF restaurant. They were able to accommodate our changing plans. The service is always incredible and the menu, inspired.
The pasta dish I ordered did not seem to be freshly made.
The Pappardelle was dry
Just as amazing as I had heard! The service was good except one thing, I felt a little rushed. Which is hard to imagine since the chicken takes an hour. The chicken is worth every second of waiting! The stuffing, the chicken and salad all together and then the fries! Everything was delicious! This was a must do for me in SF and I'm so glad it met all expectations! Thank you!
Had lunch outdoor. Love that Zuni always has both signature and seasonal dishes on the menu. We shared the halibut ceviche and endive salad. My friend, again had the burger. He continues to think it’s the best burger he has ever had. I had the steak. Services were excellent.
I LOVE Zuni Cafe. Predictably delicious, perfect service and really like being on a 2 hour vacation, which is especially great during a global pandemic.
I’ve been going to Zuni since they opened. I lived nearby. We continue coming back when in SF. It’s consistently awesome with good food and great service. Love their polenta, oysters, Caesar salad, chicken and pot de creme. Always a winner
UGH! Zuni Cafe, what happened to you? Did the pandemic impact you that much? Even during the pandemic, I got take out from you on a monthly basis and loved it; however, our in-person dining last night left me wondering how the bill was justified given the bland imagine-less food. Even though the service was nice and welcoming, I nearly sent back my main meal and the other two people in my party were also dissatisfied with their main course. It pains me to write this review because I've loved dining there for so many years but it was more painful to have to pay the exorbitantly high bill after a disappointing meal.
Service and menu has been thinned out from Zuni’s storied past.
Still lovely, but fading into a nostalgic shadow of its old self.
NOT MANY PEOPLE THERE. ALWAYS FULL FOR LAST 45 YEARS. IS IT 20% TIP
We loved spending our afternoon with you at Zuni!
Always a pleasure to be at the incomparable Zuni…
Amazing food. Love the daily change in menu. Seasonal and local ingredients.
