Yama Sushi & Izakaya
Your accommodations will be met whether you're dining with a loved one or with the family or even just to get together with a few friends.
Our masterful sushi chefs use only the freshest and highest quality ingredients from fish to vegetables, along with the exceptional service you expect. Our menu changes seasonally, and has many varieties to please both fish lovers and vegetarians alike.
There were so many items, entrees and drinks to choose from that it meets everyone needs. If you don't like ramen, you can pick sushi. If you don't want sushi, you can pick many starters items. The one thing I will suggest is to make a reservation if you have a big party or if it is on the weekend.
You will not regret it!
This restaurant was so much fun! They have a tremendous sushi menu and the Izakaya options are extensive with hot and cold options and interesting Ramen preparations. Our server, Alex was phenomenal. He clearly loved his work and knew how every menu item was prepared. The atmosphere is vibrant and well worth visiting.
Excellent first time experience all around. It's a relaxed atmosphere but the sushi is high quality, thick cuts, and delicious. Staff is fun, knowledgeable, and personable. Might have been luck of the fish picking lottery but had the best and most beautiful Toro I've ever had here. Was marbled like waygu beef and fully of flavor. Will certainly come back.
Delicious food, but this time it was served way too fast. We ordered and in less than 10 minutes all of our food was delivered along with our bottle of wine. No first tasting the wine, just get it in the wine glasses and serve it. This was very disappointing because we were celebrating 2 birthdays, which I mentioned in our Open Table reservation. No acknowledgement of birthdays was give. When you are dining out at a nice restaurant, it should feel a bit special, not like a fast food diner. I will come back, but before my party is seated, I will explain to the staff that we want a rather leisurely dinner. And, I will recommend they serve us in the customary fashion, with drinks and small dishes first, followed by a few of our entries at a time.
Great sushi, awesome service always a fantastic place to eat sushi!!!!
The restaurant has a really wide array of speciality rolls. The ramen was super rich and it was nice not having the usual Tonkotsu style you see at places around town. They were great at accommodating us, as we ended up with two more people than the original reservation had.
Yama is our fave spot in PORTLAND. The owner Jay is awesome, our fave waiter Alex makes it such a fun experience and the Sushi is fantastic, fresh and creative rolls! The Salmon Sashimi is RIDCULOUSLY fresh and good. We love it!
Excellent food and nice atmosphere. Service is always very good. High quality sushi. Diners seem to enjoy the fried chicken. Our group generally eats sashimi, rolls and fish collars. All are excellent. Love their Philadelphia roll. Happy hour is fantastic!
Our server didn’t know anything and told us to wait until she came back to unwrap the flaming jack roll.
She never came and I opened it. It was lukewarm. Gross. I had this before and we got to open it ourselves. Not sure what the rule here is. She also didn’t know what Saki to recommend.
The St. Jack roll is a must. Very sweet and attentive server...
Amazing sushi and other small bites. Friendly service, too. In the past the pacing was fine - but lately it all comes out randomly and at once. Why encourage small plates if they’re all on the table at once? Figure out your pacing— because it’s kind of a deal breaker with how it’s gone the last few times...
Love this place. One of our favorite sushi restaurants in Portand.
Great ambience, even better food. This has become a favorite place for us after our other Japanese restaurant let us down. Highly recommend!
We had a large birthday party of 15 people and Yama Sushi accommodated us so beautifully. They let us know up from that we could only split the check 3 ways for debit cards. We were able to make decisions based off of that info and the rest of the evening went so smoothly, it was almost unbelievable how flawless the service was.
Their menu has a great range for all pallets and so incredibly delicious. Every piece of sushi was divine. The octopus was the surprise hit of the night! I would highly recommend Yama Sushi for your next birthday party!
Excellent restaurant. Glad it is in the neighborhood.
Have eaten here during dinner time and happy hour ending at 6. Wasn’t psyched that last visit, the host/owner sternly told a 5-year old and us that Happy Hour wasn’t available at 550pm. Had seen others ordering right up until 6pm on prior visit. With a sushi-loving kid, pricing is a bit more important than previously!
Really good options, I liked the drinks. Donica was amazing
Delicious rolls. Great sake. Beautiful interior. We will return!
My husband and I go here very often. It is always fantastic!
Yama is always great and location is perfect for a fun night out in Portland!
Great food and outstanding service
Friendly staff and wonderful food and drinks!
Great service, great food. Appreciate the attentiveness and kindness.
So delicious and so fresh! Great sushi but steep prices! Special occasion sushi. It was wonderful food, great and friendly service and we had a great time!
Yama Sushi & Izakaya was recommended to me for my mother's birthday, sushi was requested by her. Three of us went. We started with edamame and pickle plate. Good selection to the pickles (jalapeno is a "modern" touch which we declined), very nicely presented. The miso soup was excellent. One of us had bento box tempura, California roll, and teriyaki chicken. Very good, although chicken on the dry side. One had tonkatsu, very good, crisp, large portion (he couldn't finish). My mother had the Rock n Roll sushi plate. The rice for the sushi's and the bowls was very fresh. Presentation of the food was very good and eye appealing. Service was friendly and attentive. The ambiance fresh and clean, very calm. It has the best qualities of a good Japanese restaurant and excellent food.
One of our favorite sushi spots in Portland. Come here once every few months. Great quality fish. Great sushi selection. And customer service is top notch.
First time here, couldn't of been better. It was a very rainy day, so even though I came for the sushi, it was the Ramen that really hit the spot. That being said, the sushi was fresh and yummy...the sashimi sampler came with all our favorites. Am already looking for an excuse to come back again.
Our service was absolutely delightful allowing us to thoroughly enjoy a birthday celebration! The oysters were some of the best I've ever had. The bluefin tuna was also top notch! A great sake selection. They were out of several of the desert selections but the black sesame ice cream worked for us! Actually, the entire experience was world-class!
Excellent neighborhood joint for sushi and ramen! Service was efficient (not particularly friendly, but that’s an individual server thing...) Food was really good, though. Rolls were yummy and ramen was very good. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the neighborhood.
Fabulous sushi. Did not like sitting upstairs as it removes one from the camaraderie of dining with others. The busser came to the table with a full bus tub of dirty dishes to collect one of ours. NO! NEVER! Detracted from the experience. Food always great.
Always a great experience at this restaurant. Inventive cuisine and fresh seafood. Oysters on the half-shell as well. Delicious.
The sushi here is delicious and its worth the drive from Vancouver! The menu is extremely creative and my go-to is the Mardi Gras roll with craw fish; yum!
The volcano roll was hands down the best thing we ordered. We even ordered another. The outdoor seating was nice and I appreciated being able to bring my dog. All of the rolls were top quality and the 55 sake was great too.
We enjoyed the food but service was terrible. We ordered appetizers and the waiter didn’t come back again for at least 45 minutes till long after we’d finished eating the apps. Dinner took a long time to arrive and one roll of sushi was missing. Waters were not refilled. Plates were never cleared. It was just very unfortunate since the food was great.
I went there for my birthday, and the food was amazing! I got the Yama Bento Box and the Yuzu sake wine. Both were amazing and perfectly complimented each other. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a date night, special occasion, or even just for a great lunch! 10/10, would recommend!
Excellent service and the food is way beyond excellent. Have not had a "roll" that was not YUMMY! The sushi and nigiri is fresh and served well ... always a great presentation! Can not say enough good things about YAMA ... repeat customers here and will continue to support them!
