WHITEHALL Ratings and Reviews
Whitehall lives up to all of the hype stated in the excellent reviews that we had read. Hard to believe that anyone had a bad experience in anyway. Services was EXCELLENT, food was EXCELLENT, ambiance was WONDERFUL! From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, the entire dining experiences was 2nd to none. Wish we hadn't waited this long to go!
We weren't sure what to expect and at first the menu gave us some sticker shock until our server let us know it was a sharing menu. He recommended 2 small plates and one large, but being ones for variety we opted for 4 small share plates and it was the right call.
Bread and stilton biscuits were also provided making for a perfect sized 2 person meal. All the dishes were great, my personal favourite is a toss up between the Watercress and barley risotto with salmon and the Salmon salad dish which paired pickled fennel, (non-pickled) beet and creme fraise.
We also tried the Zucchini noodles that came with show-stopping lamb bacon and the Fingerling potatoes au gratin baked in parmesan cream. At a cost of ~40 per person for our food, I think Whitehall gave me a fairly good value for cost - very high quality ingredients, and excellent preparation.
The service was spot on and our waiter was very knowledgeable. Neither of us were drinking wine on this occasion, but he kept our water glasses nicely topped all night.
The restaurant advertises a 2-hour table limit to allow for reservation turnover, but we were not rushed at all as there were still a few open tables and no reservation after us.
The decor is warm and welcoming and the wingback chairs at our table transported me to a truly British experience reminiscent of dining at a grand estate.
I will definitely be bringing more friends here.
Music was loud and odd, old 80's alternative, so it felt like a bar and was difficult to hear our own conversation. The food was good but not fantastic, so I gave it a three star. The cheese souffle was the best. Really liked the decor and the service was very good. All in all it we found it was a good restaurant but not memorable, and very pricey. I don't mind pricey for fantastic food.
We have been to the Whitehall a number of times previously and have highly rated it, but were disappointed with our visit last night. We had a reservation at 8.15pm but weren't seated until 9pm. While waiting at the bar, we weren't given any update as to when our table would be ready. Once seated our server did cover the cost of the drinks we had whilst waiting, but the gesture seemed a little too late.
The biggest disappointment was the recent change in the menu which has changed to a sharing concept. We had expected to be able to order a separate starter and main course each, but now the menu had changed so that the main meat dishes are only done as a sharing option. So instead of each being able to enjoy a separate meat dish, we were left having to get a large sharing dish. We chose the lamb, and although the meat itself was very good, it was served in a dish that wasn't warmed so the food cooled quickly, and the potatoes and zucchini were both slightly undercooked.
On the plus side, the cheese soufflé was as excellent as ever as were the wine selections and the music and atmosphere.
We used to rave to our friends about Whitehall being one of the best restaurants in Calgary, but we left last night not being sure that we would return.
Everything about this restaurant was great except the speed of the service and the portion size. It took 45 mins just to place our order and we ended up settling the bill before dessert arrived as we'd already been waiting 30 mins. I don't mind paying extra for fantastic food, but the portions should be more than a few bites (especially as Whitehall promotes sharing plates).
Received a gift certificate for this restaurant as a gift. Had not heard of the establishment before. Absolutely enjoyed the entire experience. Food was great, decor was great, and service was great. One of our favourite things was the pace of the tasting menu. That was PERFECT!
The service and ambiance are the best features of Whitehall. Servers are friendly, efficient and had an excellent pulse on both the nuances of the menu and the extensive wine list. Our small plates for sharing were tasty and creatively presented. My friend had the souffle and I wish I had done the same for my main. I choose the duck instead which was disappointingly dry. It was also a hot mess to consume as the wraps provided were greasy. I love duck but this dish was sub-par considering the price and it didn't measure up to the rest of the dining experience at Whitehall.
Overall pleasant experience, we personally found the portions a little small for family style sharing as recommended by the waiter. I think if we went back we would have rather ordered two plates of everything and less variety as it felt that we barely got a taste of each plate.
Top three in Calgary!! This is a great place to eat at. The menu offers something different and the complimentary breads and butters are such a treat. From the moment you walk into this restaurant the feel, the design, the servers, the food all compliment each other. Exceptional food, beautiful presentation, something different for the taste buds. It was a hit!
Dropped in for Sunday lunch on a whim. Everything from the food to the location was excellent. The two front of house staff were polite, friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and the history of the building.
The cheese soufflé was amazing as was the chicken pate that my husband ordered. We tried the Beef roast and fish and chips for main and again, both meals were spot on.
Oh and I should mention the pork dripping spread that came with the bread.... amazingly delicious and flavoursome.
The atmosphere was laid back, friendly and welcoming. Would we come here again? Most definitely.
Spectacular food and impeccable service made for a fantastic evening at Whitehall! We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and they even spoiled us with a complimentary glass of Cava. We did the tasting menu and we're blown away with each course. The cocktails were interesting and delicious. Can't wait to go back!!
This was a get together with friends. I have to be gluten free, so as far as the food is concerned I am not the best person for this as I had a hamburger without the bun. GF bun was available, but I have experienced the GF buns aren't very tasty so I didn’t try it. A couple had the fish & chips & this dish seemed to be the best option. Bread was served with 2 types of spreads and GF bread was also served, which I thought was good. I always try to ask if the server tried the GF items and most have not.
The service was good.
The venue is beautiful and impressive. The food however not so much. Tapas style food which DONOT stimulate your taste buds to a standard you would expect from this place. Their wine selection is extremely limited and their cocktails are mostly gin inspired. We left this place feeling like we had just visited a high end restaurant that seeks it's inspiration from pubs. Disappointed.
We celebrated a birthday with family. We brought our 7 month old and the restaurant was very accommodating. Even though I'm not a big fan of lamb, I loved their lamb tartar dish. So good. It's was all very quick and each dish was something unique but comfortable. I just wish I hadn't decided to be DD that night. Everyone loved the cocktails and wine.
All right it wasn't the cheapest dinner we've had but what a feast! great service, super pleasant atmosphere reminded me of the Gregory hotel in New York we stayed in recently. fantastic ambience and our server could mix some mean cocktails. Shared a fantastic evening with my wife and teenage kids and will certainly be back.
Excellent decor in an historic and hip locations. exceptional food. shame it was a business lunch as I would have liked to try something from the extensive wine list. I want to go back and bring my wife next time...she would love it. Nice slant on cool Britania
