West Park Bistro
Tables in the dining room are much more quiet than the one out front, near the bar.
Our waiter was courteous, professional and knowledgeable about the food on the menu. We enjoyed the Grilled Octopus the most, tender and creative.
I wanted to love it but the service was slow/forgetful and more importantly, the menu just feels super dated -- why is there truffle oil on everything? The spaghetti was pretty good, but the steak my husband ordered was not high quality and unfortunately was covered in a berry butter? Also the potatoes were drenched in a blue cheese. Would love to see more attentive service and more fresh/local options, especially since it isn't cheap.
Food & service was UNBELIEVABLE! Hidden gem!
Great wine list, mixed service and food quality.
Good food, but consistently poor service. The waiters are OK (but not better), but the folks who deliver the food to your table are constantly confused, unsure, etc. I ordered an appetizer my dinner companion a salad. When they were brought to the table, the server went out of his way to carefully place them in the middle of the table even though I twice mentioned that the salad was for my companion and the appetizer for me.
Separately, I've been to this restaurant six or seven times. They never recognize me because the greeter has never twice been the same person and the waiters are always new.
So, if you want good food and a quiet restaurant, go here, but be prepared for completely impersonal service by waiters and servers who all seem to have their training wheels still on.
My allergies where partially ignored resulting in me feeling poorly afterwards. My husbands meal was flavorless and he too did not feel well afterwards. Disappointing, since we had a much better dinner experience a couple of month ago, now we are not certain if we should try the place again.
Both the food and service were great. We have been there twice in the last 10 dates. We will be back soon.
Enjoyed sitting at the bar for a drink. Bartender very nice. Food was very good also.
The food was excellent. The service was great too. Definitely glad we gave it a try.
Way too expensive for services and food.
Dinner with a former work associate
The restaurant is relatively new and haven’t yet developed a large following. Though I believe it will. It’s not overcrowded and is rather quiet so you can have a normal conversation at the dinner. Service is good, the menu is not very large but most of what we tried was very tasty. Good place for a dinner out or a casual celebration. I would say it’s one of the better restaurants in San Carlos.
Went in on a quiet Monday for dinner to try this place out. There were 2 large parties taking up half of the dining room, which contributed to most of the noise. Service was great and the staff was very friendly. If we had questions and they didn’t have answers they went to find them out right away. No issues there!
The reason for the overall 3 star rating was due to kitchen management and overpriced entrees. I know the Bay Area is getting outrageously priced, but $36 for a piece of fish with potatoes and mushrooms is a bit crazy in downtown San Carlos. We also waited over an hour to get our dinner (table of 2) because the kitchen clearly wasn’t being expedited efficiently with the large party next to us. I understand some kitchens can’t handle 20 person parties, but that is why you have a policy of no groups bigger than 6 or 8.
We sat down at 8pm and didn’t get our meal until almost 9:15. While the staff apologized multiple times and even offered free dessert, it sadly didn’t get our time back. With so many options in the peninsula I was bummed the experience wasn’t better.
I didn’t walk away angry, just disappointed. I intend to go back and give them another shot at some point but overall there was nothing standout about our experience from our first visit.
We went for brunch on a Sunday. It isn't quite a "brunch" place - not a huge menu, not toast just bread for the table (just examples). But the food we ordered (omelets) were surprisingly good. The coffee was also decent. Several tables outside for outdoor dining.
Enjoyed happy hour so much it extended into dinner! Beautifully crafted apps and delish drinks.
Tables were very small for parties of 4. No space for water glasses and plates!
wonderful service! We were seated in the private wine room for our large group and had an excellent dinner in our own private space. Will surely be back!
Took the extended family here for a graduation party. Surprisingly, we got the beautiful wine room. I think this is the best food in San Carlos bar none! Good portions are large and all of my family’s plates were empty. The roasted chicken had a delicious sauce and the roasted Brussels sprouts were delicious.
I don’t typically rate any restaurant perfect, but this place has it all, including Stella on tap. I love the fact that you can sit in the bar, dine in the bar area or go to the quieter room. When full, it’s noisy but vibrant. Love this place for everyday food, lunch, dinner or special occasions, especially near the wall fireplace. Decor is beautiful and wait staff Kube’, Murat & Onur will do anything for you and customize, if needed. They have a wonderful new children’s menu, which was a great addition.
Love this place and so proud it’s in my hometown!
Excellent and very accommodating
I had requested outside seating and they added a table just for us
Consistent quality of food and service makes this restaurant one of our “Go-To” local places.
We really enjoy this neighborhood restaurant. The service is always friendly and accommodating. The dining rooms are pleasant and not noisy. The menu is always consistent, seasonal and delicious for many tastes. We bring different guests with us and not one has
come away disappointed. I recommend it highly for week-night meal or for special occasion.
Checking the website and reviews, then scheduled a Mother's Day brunch. Get the restaurant, find out they are "10 minutes behind schedule", wait 30 minutes (plus). Sit down, order "bottomless mimosa" only to find out they don't serve them on Mother's Day. I ask, "sorry I did not see that on the website or open table?" Answer: because we don't advertise that we don't serve the regular menu on holidays. Basically, a classic bait and switch, only its Mother's Day and now everything is now sour. Find out regular brunch menu is not valid on holidays, but you only know that after you have arrived on a holiday. The attitude was "suck it up buttercup". We ended up walking out. How hard is to put that menu not valid on holidays? So much for customer matters. This comment is for the owner: I will never eat at your restaurant and will tell everyone in San Carlos/Redwood City (where I live) the same because you have lost my trust.
Overall very disappointing experience. We were seated over 45 minutes late with barely an apology. Service was mediocre and dishes came out without certain things specified on the menu with no explanation or apology. This would have been disappointing on any day, but this was Mother’s Day. Never going back.
We were there for Mother's Day Brunch. The menu had a nice variety of selections, and it was a price-fixed menu of $36.00 for entrée and dessert. We all had a nice time - but felt the $36.00 was a little high for the quality of food we received. Service was good, everyone was happy and in a celebratory mood. They have a nice bar - and the ambiance is very nice.
Mother's Day brunch service managed to be simultaneously slow and brusque: the waiter's first words to us (before we even ordered!) were that they were very busy and wouldn't accept any substitutions. He later rarely showed up even for the basics like water and drinks; when he did show up his manner was curt.
Food was OK but certainly not worth the prix-fixe surcharge.
My "No" recommendation is based on...there are many other restaurants (even in San Carlos) which are superior. That said, the staff was gracious, friendly and hard working. Our meal was Mother's Day brunch. The restaurant was packed, and the wait staff seemed to handle the crowd efficiently. Brunch selections were fairly limited with a choice of entree and dessert for $36; coffee was $3.50 extra. This restaurant might be worth another look for a non-special occasion night, but we will continue to explore other area restaurants rather than return.
West Park Bistro as really stepped up their food game! We love grabbing brunch outside with our dog and people watching. We also love their happy hour, menu is fab!
After the Opera our group had reservations at West Park Bistro. The quality of the appetizers and the drinks to start were outstanding. Everyone had their Chilean sea bass, salmon, and/or Seafood Linguini with generous sweet french bread, still warm. We all shared a couple of wonderful desserts. (Bread pudding and kiwi lime pie). Everyone thought this was a memorable meal. We sat in the main dining area which was well lit, but could have chosen the more private wine cavern area. This restaurant is moderate-expensive in price but the gourmet meal was well worth it!
WPB has really matured over the last couple of years into a really wonderful spot with great ambiance. Plenty of options for seating whether outdoors on a nice night or more elegant in the small wine room area which as a few tables and closed off from the larger dining area.
Now one of my “go to” restaurants on Laurel St.
Quite pricey but good food. Large portions. Service a bit too quick. All in all enjoyable.
The avocado toast was amazing!
The food options were good, the restaurant was nice, however once a crowd gathered at the bar, it got a little noisy in the main dining area. Many customers asked for their tables to be moved. so they weren't bumped by the bar patrons (or staring at rear ends) during their meal. It would be worth trying this restaurant again.
Great food, as always. quick and friendly service.
We were surprised that such world class cuisine was hidden away in San Carlos. I just hit upon it on Open Table. We went because the reviews were great and I liked the menu. The food was phenomenal. The ambiance is nice too -- attractively appointed, straight forward. The waiters were attentive but patient as we took a while to talk before ordering.
We have had an excellent meal each time we dine here. The service is amazing from the minute you walk through the door. A true gem in San Carlos for dining!
Huge props for the martinis--a drink were size means everything.
Our waiter was excellent...engaging yet professional. She moved us into the wine cellar for quiter dining.
The food was good, especially the scallops/risotto and the steak tartare.
The so-called wine steward was a putz. Surly demeanor . When my companion asked a question, the guy completely ignored him. The markup on the wines was a little high, we thought, though the selection was comprehensive.
Loved the combo appetizer plate. Loved my lamb kabob dinner! Great rice. Pita perfect. Will definitely return for more....😊
Nice atmosphere for casual unhurried Sunday brunch. We met friends we hadn't seen in years and we're able to eat and chat without being rushed.
Delicious food, nice professional service, recommended for every body
