American
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

We went last night with three friends. We had a reservation at 8:00 pm. We were seated at 8:20 pm after multiple inquiries. We did not talk to a waiter for another 15 minutes. In the meantime we got a glass of water. The waiter came, gave us the menu and disappeared. We had to ask the bus boys in Spanish if they could could call our waiter to place the order.
The appetizers show up. The food is delicious! There was a long wait between the end of appetizers and the arrival of the entrees. When finally they arrived, only 2 guests had their dishes. Are the other two dishes going to show up? Who knows? Nobody is explaining anything to us. Eventually the other 2 dishes arrive, our friends had started eating to avoid the food getting cold. The waiter never checked on us the whole dinner.

We did not order desserts and coffee because the service was so poor we just wanted to be done with the wait.

This was a $70 per person bill without wine, coffee or dessert. For that price point we expect a much better service. Also the napkins leave lint on a woman’s black skirt.

In fairness, most of the food was good (the salmon, broccolini and salad / raw bar) although I wouldn’t recommend the mac and cheese or creme brûlée. The main issue was service - it was super clear our table was an afterthought despite our reservation, and throughout the meal we had to actively seek the waiter’s attention to both order and then remind them of things we’d ordered. If you’re going on an expense account, it’s great - otherwise I’d honestly steer clear.

Possibly the rudest staff I’ve encountered at a restaurant in SF. The person at the host stand (I think he was the manager on duty) was snide and condescending. We arrived early and asked if it was ok but said we were happy to wait. He said he could seat us outside, and I asked if it would be possible to sit outside—not a problem. I know places are busy and have seating plans for reservations. He rolled his eyes and said the reservation was outside. But then said we could sit inside, and so I said thanks and said anywhere was fine and we appreciated them accommodating us.

When we got to the table, we were ready to shake off the poor welcome and start with a clean slate. However, our server was extremely curt. My partner asked if they had Jasmine tea and she said in a rude (not endearing) way, “We aren’t that fancy here.” Turns out, they actually did have it, so props to the sever for checking. When she told him they had she said, “We actually do have it so that’s what you’re getting,” in a very abrupt tone.

I actually wonder if the host/manager said something to our sever bc I heard them talking about another table. We were seated near their computers so I overheard more than I cared to.

The people who brought our popovers and water were nice at least.

The food was mediocre—under salted fried chicken with mushy skin. It was juicy though. It was pretty bland overall.

I would avoid this place and find somewhere that is polite to guests.

My family and I do a Sat lunch here every December after shopping in Union Square and doing the gingerbread house at the Fairmont.

Food is consistently great, and the service is usually perfect but this year the waitress couldn’t be bothered to request buttered noodles from the kitchen for my 5 yr old. Kids’ options are pretty limited and that’s what he’s had (and loved!) in the past, so he settled for toast this year. Pretty disappointing.

You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the Beef Tartare is one of my favorite dishes anywhere and I always wash it down with a couple very Christmassy Negronis.

We love this tradition and will be back again next year.

Absolutely amazing meal and drinks. The fried chicken is their bread and butter and for good reason. If I could eat it weekly I would! The cocktails were also delicious and the bartender was great at recommending the best spirits for them. Overall amazing service and food and I will definitely be returning.

Wayfare is ALWAYS a pleasant dining experience. I'm happy to see that one of my fave spots has adapted well to "pandemic life." Cleanliness is key and Wayfare has always had that down... since pre-COVID. Ambiance and food are top-tier as usual.

Very slow service-- needed more help for the upstairs staff. Still, even though we waited 20 minutes for our cocktails, and they arrived with our starters, it worked out okay. The restaurant continues to serve quality food, with flare and interest, and overall is an excellent value. We return over and over again.

Food was great. We waited more than 30 minutes after being seated to get drink orders taken. This was after asking the hostess if she could let the server know and then asking a passing server for help. He immediately took our drink order. Service picked up then but with outside seating we asked 3 different times to have the heater for our section turned on and it never was. All other sections had heaters in use. The overall feeing was very unwelcoming. It’s not comparable with the wonderful food we were served.

The chicken and waffles were a nice combo of sweet and savory, delicious. I particularly enjoyed the popovers as the pre-meal treat. Light and airy. The butter had just the right amount of salt which made it the perfect accompaniment. Service was well-functioning considering the issues other places have been experiencing. It was obvious the staff got along and communicated well. Makes a huge difference in higher end establishments. Keep up the good work!

Not the first time we’ve eaten at Wayfare & it won’t be the last. The menu seems to change a few times a year (the fried chicken is the one for sure item) which is cool but is also a bummer.

We chose this restaurant after an episode of great food truck race
The staff were great, the food was terrific. We felt a bit rushed as we did not have time to enjoy our beverage before the food arrived. A very minor issue with such an enjoyable evening but we thought you should be aware.

Recommended by my niece, we gave Wayfare Tavern a try, after taking in a show. The food was top-notch, but the service was another story. I've seen glowing reviews of the service from other customers, so we just happened to catch an off-night. Our server came and took our beverage order, then we didn't see her for about 15-20 minutes. She took our order and the bread came shortly after. Then there was a wait for the salad, then an even longer wait for my wife's fried chicken and my hamburger. A table that arrived after we did actually got served before we did, so that didn't sit well. Finally, we weren't given a dessert menu and it was another long wait for our check to be delivered. With so many good options near our East Bay home, we wouldn't make a special trip to SF for this place. If we had another all-day event in the City, maybe, but I hope the service will be better next time. We had a 5:30 reservation and didn't leave until just before 8 p.m. Most of that was spent waiting for food or the check. At the prices charged, the service should have been absolutely top-notch. This was a miss for this customer.

We came here to celebrate my birthday, what a bummer experience. We were seated pretty promptly at a corner table which was nice. Our waitress (Maria?) greeted our table and immediately asked what we would like to drink and eat after not really having any time to browse the menu. After being rushed to order, our appetizers arrived and were great. Our drinks came after that and mine was wrong. There was a bit of a gap between that and the food. We were not checked on to ask how our food was and after asking for boxes we were brought the check without asking if we would like to see a dessert menu. Kind of rude. Won’t be going back.

Always a solid experience, but definitely not a stand-out anymore in SF. Our party of five all agreed it was a solid 3. Food was good - burger the best by far with brioche bun and caramelized onions (though waitress mixed up the burgers for medium and medium rare among our party), friend chicken moist- with too mushy of a crust though, croque madam bread should have been toasted and more gruyere cheese on top, tater tots were a bit disappointing as we could have gotten same kind from Safeway and added chives and sour cream...no wow factor. The green salad dressing literally just tasted like mayo (and I like mayo, but it was maybe the olive oil kind...or something not quite right)
Service was ok. Cocktails came watered down (not sure if ice melted or too much soda water was added??)- so we returned and just stuck with straight alcohol instead.
Ambience is still cozy.
