Water Grill - San Diego
We had less than attentive service, plates weren’t cleared before the next items were delivered, the Brussel sprouts were woefully undercooked (raw basically), and some of the portions seemed quite ‘skimpy’ for the price. Our server was not around when it was appropriate to mention some of our concerns, or we would have returned some of the items. For the price, there are better options.
Everything we had was delicious. I had Dover Sole; perhaps the best since I was last in an upscale London restaurant. I was going to say Paris restaurant, but then it would be Sole Meuniere. The dessert menu was a bit boring. Our server Matt was attentive with helpful menu suggestions. It was clear that he had pride in the restaurant which I always find a positive sign about a place. We liked the atmosphere. We would unhesitatingly recommend Water Grill to close friends.
Our server, Dawna, was terrific. Helped make the evening fun.
Amazing experience! Jordan went out of his way to make our experience incredible.
Not happy with the food. Left after the appetizers. Raw oysters were fine - fried calamari was almost charred and clam chowder was not great. When you are at a high end restaurant you expect the food to reflect that...maybe just an off night for the restaurant or just those dishes. I had heard good things about the restaurant but I just did not experience it. Restaurant was nice inside and server was good.
Our server Courtney was helpful, kind and patient. She was extremely tentative. Her kindness made our visit pleasant. We also appreciated the help of Andrea, who made herself available for questions in reference to the menu items.
Our only concern was the lobster Mac and cheese was a bit dry. Our server was more than willing to offer more sauce upon our request.
Overall we enjoyed our visit. Thank you
Excellent food and service. They were busy, but our food and drinks were delivered to us at a good pace. The fish was excellent as usual. We had a table between two other tables along the back wall where the noise level was uncomfortable. There were energetic conversations on both sides of us and it sometimes made it difficult to have our own conversation. I'll ask for an outside table next time and see if it is a bit better.
One of our favorite dinners ever! My 12oz filet was epic and they recreated the Mac from a few years ago. Her fish I believe was the sea bass with nochi and she said was her favorite dish ever!
Fresh yummy seafood ...the sea bass was killer. And the black cod with soba noodles was outstanding. Salmon needed some salt but otherwise good. And the warm bread they bring out was incredible! Service was a little slow, especially when we told the waiter we had a show to go to. He could have moved much faster. I kinda wish there was more “wild” rather than “farmed” fish selections also. Overall though great night.
The food was amazing and our server was great. However, they sat us next to the open windows for our 5pm reservation. The high that day was 62° so by 5pm it wasn’t exactly warm. When we expressed to the hostess that it might be too cold, she said that they didn’t have servers for the other areas that were away from the large, fold up windows. We reluctantly sat there, and as the sun went down, it was freezing. We all had jackets but the breeze coming through the windows was very cold. A guest at the table next to us had his hood on. We asked our server if we could please close the windows, and she replied that upper management keeps them open until the temperature drops below 60°. The open windows are great for ambiance in the summer time, but it is not reasonable to have people dining uncomfortably in the winter. We love Water Grill, but I would definitely not go to this location again unless it was a very warm day.
Great food, service was a little slow but got better throughout the night.
Had great drinks at the bar. Bartenders were entertaining and they definitely could make a cocktail. Our waiter was awesome and the food did not disappoint. Everything was perfect.
Second trip here from Chicago and the experience was still fabulous. Will return again 🙏
Ordered the seafood tower. Lobster was BAD. Also ordered the steak which can cold on a cold plate. I would not go back.
Very nice restaurant, food was great. I wish they had let us know that the dining room doesn't open until 5:00 pm. We had to sit in the bar area and would have preferred different seating. Also, the door was stuck and they had to keep opening it to allow entry and we never saw anyone make an effort to
do a simple fix. Otherwise, we had a very pleasant evening and dining experience, the service was great.
TVs everywhere. Might as well have been a sports bar. Food was OK.
Drinks before dinner took 20 minutes to arrive. Ordered another round when dinner arrived and canceled them because we finished our entire dinner and they still had not brought them. I had to get up and look for our waitress to cancel them. I found her at the bar and she told me they were next in line to be made. Told her not to bother because we had to leave for a play. I have no idea why they don’t have more bartenders on a Saturday night. We won’t be back. Plenty of other great restaurants in the area.
Great staff. Andrea and her team are awesome.
Food was fantastic but my entire group wished the service would have been better :(
The waitress didn’t time the appetizers and meal correctly. Everything came out at the same time.
My favorite restaurant in SD. It never disappoints and service is Michelin Star. The Chilean seabass was perfectly cooked and the bread worth any trip.
went there since i saw Stone crab claws on internet...But none to be found that day very disappointed but GM and all staff very nice and accomodating.
Great oyster selection and among the best mussels I’ve ever had. Good choice on wines by the glass. Attentive service. Highly recommended.
Excellent shellfish tower. Waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful.
Olivia was marvelous. Very patient, friendly, and professional. As of right now, she’s moved up to my favorite.
This is the Legend’s go to restaurant for getting together as a group.
We celebrated three birthdays! Delicious seafood, outstanding service! Thank You!!
Oysters and seafood entrees excellent. Our waiter was pleasant but service was slow, especially considering we had an early reservation (5:15 pm). No desserts available except for the rice pudding. Waiter tried to justify that by attributing it to a busy Valentines Day that”cleaned them out.” Not a valid excuse for a high end restaurant.
There was an unexpected delay in getting our food, however our server did everything she could to accommodate us. Everything from the service, food, and atmosphere was top notch!
The Water Grill was recommended to me by a friend, and it did not disappoint. The service was comparable with any top restaurant in the Bay Area. We felt lucky to reserve a table as we found the Gas Lamp District was super busy on a holiday weekend - so, thank you Open Table - and we left it kind of late after being out on the water all day. My husband had oysters - super selection and the presentation was perfect. I had the Wild Shrimp Louis salad, which was chopped for me, and was more than I could eat. Very attentive staff and good food. The bathroom was clean and well-stocked, despite the huge crowd in the upstairs rooms and the full tables on the street level. You pay for what you get, so I'm saying it was priced accordingly.
Great atmosphere and excellent food, service was impeccable. Someone was always filling my water or asking us know if we needed anything, while also letting us enjoy our dinner
Everything was great except big disappointment at the end of our dinner on both of our desserts plates and this was on a special menu for Valentine’s Day.
My suggestion for the management or whoever oversees the kitchen to pay more attention to all the preparation of each plate before brought out to customers. For a beautiful high end restaurant but both of our dessert plates looks like we were being served from Denny restaurant that night and especially on our special night.
Amazing food. Fresh oysters. Steak was cooked to perfection and was very flavorful.
Yes but do not get the special could have had the same thing alacarte for half the price!
Valentine’s Day limited menu. Swordfish came out cold. Sent it back and then watched my wife finish her entree before mine came back out. When a new piece came out it was dried out. And no attempts by the staff to fix it. I won’t be recommending this place.
Set menu for valentines dinner was over priced. Food was average. Fresh warm bread is excellent.
Just had Valentines dinner here and had a great time. Great food and spectacular service.
Mediocre food, bad cocktail with no alcohol (really?). Recommend you come for oysters only
Great service and delicious seafood!! Knowledgeable staff. Just a step above. We loved it.
Ashley provides excellent service! Food is delicious and ambience relaxing and great! Would Lovett have had a vallet service!
Amazing food and location
