Walter Hansel Wine Bistro
"An impressive new Santa Rosa restaurant that's instantly one of our best"
Jeff Cox, renowned Wine Country food critic.
We are a small restaurant and love Open Table diners, please, please notify us as early as possible if your plans change. If you are unable to find the reservation you want, please call us directly at (707) 546-6462. Thank you.
Everything was fantastic! They made our anniversary that much more special!
Meats (pork, chicken) dry and overcooked. Steak was delicious. Potato cold in center. Good Cesar salad and tomato soup. Spotty service
We had a wonderful dinner. The service was spot on and the food excellent. Definitely would go again.
This was our first time to the restaurant and we all enjoyed our meals very much. Our wait staff was great. The food was a little under salted, but that is easily remedied. Much better than over salted. Some portions of the dishes seemed a little undercooked, like it could have used a few more minutes in the oven. Nothing drastic, but there. We would definitely go back to try some of the other dishes.
This has become my special occasion/celebration restaurant. I can't afford to eat there often but each time I do it is a wonderful experience.
Always delightful to be at “Walter’s”. It’s always a lovely experience.
CAME BECAUSE OF EMAIL OF PEACH SPECIAL & MELON SALAD SPECIAL & CORN SOUP! THE BEST!
My husband and I spent one night in Santa Rosa and Walter Hansel Wine Bistro left us wanting to spend more time here. We wanted to try everything! The service was wonderful and the food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend giving this place a try, you will not regret it.
One of our favorite "go-to" restaurants. The food is always excellent, the ambiance is perfect and the service is always great. The chef brings locally grown and sustainable "farm to table" menu items. They have a large vegetable garden onsite that they source most of their produce from. I recommend the specials and our favorite entree is the halibut. Enjoy!
As usual, we had great service. The food was terrific and beautifully presented. Our relatives were impressed with such a fine place in our neighborhood..
The best French restaurant outside of Paris. Fabulous as always.
The team at Walter Hansel is very good and personable. This is a great restaurant
We were there for my friends birthday. The reception was warm and the atmosphere homey. The food choices are excellent and the server so helpful. Our meals, Rib eye steak and Rack of Lamb, were outstanding and a delicious Floating Island dessert. A charming soloist sang for our enjoyment. Lovely dining experience, perfect for a birthday, and one of my favorite restaurants.
We were in from Southern California for the weekend and we received a recommendation to have dinner here. We were not disappointed! Service was impeccable, food & winer were absolutely delicious and ambience was amazing. Best corn chowder we have ever had! There was even an opera singer who performed a few songs throughout our dinner. Would absolutely come back, when we visit Santa Maria/Sonoma again:)
Walter Hansel Bistro never fails to deliver on a magical dining experience. The moment you walk in you are greeted with a welcoming smile, all the staff treat you like you are an old friend. From start to finish you are left feeling that you and your guest are the only people there. our server was a dream, very service oriented and willing to tend to our every need and want. Their food presentation was 5 star, start to finish. we will be back again to have our dining dreams come true. Bravo!!
This was the 4th time dining there. Amazing food each time. Includes amuse-bouche and complimentary dessert drink. They brought divine complimentary chocolate mousse for bd dessert. Not inexpensive but food experience equal to cost.
We always have a fabulous meal and great great service!!
We love this restaurant. Fabulous food, wonderful service. Elegant but not chi-chi.
The ambiance and prices are down-to-earth "bistro" level but the service, food, and drink are high end. The server made extremely well-considered wine pairing recommendations, which made it one of the highlights of our trip.
First visit. We had halibut and scallops. Both dishes were excellent, servings generous and flavorful. Price was fair for a complete dish. Service was attentive considering the large number of diners. This was one of the better dinners we have had since moving to Sonoma County nine years ago. Downside, a bit close and noisy. Part of the charm maybe. We will be back!
Perfect as always! One of our favorite local spots
Outstanding bistro vibe, good wine list, excellent food and superb service!
We always enjoy our visits to Walter Hansel Wine Bistro - absolutely one of our favorite places to dine. The staff are welcoming and gracious, the food is superb.
Great dishes well prepared and presented. I’d recommend the small plates . Chef rj
We went for our Anniversary and, as always, everything was fabulous! My husband and I both had the escargot which is so flavorful and tender. I had the halibut (my favorite thing on their menu lately) and my husband had the chicken cordon bleu which was perfectly cooked with a creamy Dijon sauce...lovely. We love eating here special occasion or not!
An acquaintance had recommended Walter Hansel Bistro is the past, finally we were able to try it and we are so glad we did! Excellent food all the way around - an example of just what quality, locally-sourced ingredients can do to elevate any dish. The chef put together a menu with lots of variety and creativity. The service staff was friendly, and it was nice to see and hear the chef in the kitchen being so calm, cool and collected - no Gordon Ramsey screaming. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone - don't be fooled by the neighborhood look of the outside, the food is terrific, top to bottom.
Great food and service. Lots of choices. Great wine list
We had a very enjoyable evening with friends. The food was wonderful, the service great but the noise level is really loud. Hard to have conversation.
We have had dinner here several times in the last 2 years. I think the food and service is outstanding! Amazing place in a charming rural setting.
My wife and I love WHWB. It's our go to place in Sonoma County. Everything about it is near perfect but my only complaint is that because of the layout of the restaurant, half of the seats are facing a wall, not a window. There are tables near the window and all of those seats can look out a window at vineyards but those tables seemed reserved for 4 or more. I'm not sure anything can be done for the unlucky diners who get seated so their only view is the wall. The food, service and entire experience makes up for that one shortcoming. I highly recommend WHWB.
I wanted to taste Walter Hansel's wines, so that was my main impetus for having dinner at the bistro, which I was aware of but had never eaten there before. The food was fabulous (I had a beet salad and chicken cordon bleu), and I really enjoyed the Pinot the waitress recommended. The place is cozy (less than 20 tables, plus seating at the bar), and it has a nice ambience. They also had a 3-course prix fixe dinner that sounded really good and was reasonably priced for $39, so I'll have to come back and have that.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
We dined here for our wedding anniversary. We were presented with two glasses of champagne as we sat down. From the appetizers, main course, dessert and their extensive wine selection, everything was superb! And, Chef Ruben Gomez is a truly talented chef. We’ve followed him on his culinary journeys for years!
Wonderful restaurant with great knowledgeable staff with fun, open attitudes.
Had the chicken stuffed with prosciutto but poorly paired with bitter, tired asparagus.
One would think that a restaurant with its own organic garden could find a better vegetable pair with this entree. Will return bit no more asparagus unless it’s IN season.
Staff was wonderful from the moment we walked in. We were asked if it was a special occasion. After we told them it was our anniversary, they started us off with a glass of bubbly. After dinner, they gave us a glass of port to end the night. The night was one of the best I’ve ever had.
Heather was an absolute delight to have as our server. Every mouthful was just as amazing as the last! We will be back!
One of our favorite restaurants in Sonoma. Wonderful!
The beet salad is as lovely as it is delicious! Always a great meal.
Loved everything! Great, albeit, rich food. Heather, our server, was the best!
Walter Hansel Wine Bistro is a good choice when you are in the Santa Rosa/Windsor area of California. The staff are well trained and attentive. The wine list is a good one and features some French whites that I seldom see in other restaurants. The food was both interesting and delicious and my date and I had a thoroughly good time at that restaurant. In my opinion, this was the best of the three high-end restaurants at which we dined during our stay near Santa Rosa, California.
One of our favs, and if not for the crazy loud noise level, I would have given a 5 star all around. Mgmt should think about moving tables for 2 to one end of the restaurant and the larger tables to another section. We sat next to 2 tables for 4 (we were 2), and the people were shouting, laughing and cackling so loud that we could not have a conversation at all. It was extremely unpleasant. I had a wonderful gazpacho with scallops, and duck confit with arugula and white bean salad. Absolutely delicious, but the experience was horrible. I hope mgmt will consider reconfiguring the layout of the small vs larger tables.
