We were so happy we could get a reservation for Farther's day. This is one of our favorite Sonoma County restaurants. Before Pandemic the inside dining was warm and cozy but the outside tent has just the right balance of open space and charm. The staff always make us feel at home and the food is fresh - farm to table- and interesting. Despite being there many times we always find something new to try. AND, by far the best Pistachio ice cream I have ever had.
Walter Hansel's Bistro is one of our go to dinner spots. The meals are always delicious, and the extras provided make it a little more special. We love the house wines as well. We recently enjoyed the Halibut and Seafood Pasta with Cuvee Alyce Chardonnay. What a great roadside bistro. Bon Apetit!
Great chef, food, wine flights, samples and relaxing ambiance.
The service was wonderful, the food very tasty and the atmosphere was very pleasant. My husband and I enjoyed ourselves very much
Jesse is part of a great service team. Our Pinot was amazeballs. Keep it going! Looking forward to dropping in again soon.
As always the food was wonderful fresh, seasonal French bistro food. Brought my 88 year old Mother-in Law for her birthday. Service was excellent. Consistent!
One of our favorite Sonoma County restaurants. Never fails to please.
Excellent food and very efficient and courteous servers
Extremely delicious food expertly prepared. A true delight for all the senses.
This restaurant consistently is excellent. I definitely will recommend it
Food was good, especially the salad. The only negative was the brussels sprouts. They were out of season, hard as rock (uncooked on the inside) and charred on the outside. Whole Brussels sprouts should be braised or boiled before pan sauteing. Otherwide a very nice experience.
Excellent food in charming bistro setting. Love this place. Very friendly staff
Consistent and delicious as always! Menu changes regularly, so not the same thing to choose from. Love the special touches of the amuse buche and ports served to us. Elevates the experience!
Good to have the restaurant open for inside dining again. The patio is great too, but the weather is still a little cold and windy for an evening meal outside. There are some changes in staff, but generally it is a great place to eat. Of course, we'll be back often.
35th anniversary celebration (we're regulars enough that staff recognize us). General rule: always try the seasonal dishes, which in my case was a lovely seafood pasta with lobster, tiger prawns, and sole in fettuccine, and the peach tarte tatin for dessert. It was nice to be back to the usual cloth napkins and paper table coverings. This is really just a perfect little restaurant, and I recommend it highly.
We met friends for an outdoor dinner and we were happy with the experience. The servers were lovely and mostly attentive. Food was for the excellent and clearly fresh, high quality ingredients. A few highlights - the tomato and buratta were wonderful. The cheese was fresh and tangy and soft and delicious. The halibut and ribs were also a standout. Perfectly prepared and really tasty. The mesclun salad was delicious though the cheesy toast needed a bit more time to crisp up. The cheese plate and tart tatin were also yummy. The French press coffee was a nice finish.
The downsides - two in our party had French onion soup. The amount of gruyere was a paltry amount - barely there. We all agree onion soup needs a lot of cheese! And the service had some glitches that stilted the experience. They didn’t replace silverware and so we had dishes but no utensils for several long minutes - and there wasn’t a server to ask. This happened twice during the meal. And the chairs - the chairs were extremely uncomfortable. As my dining companion said, I don’t mind paying $30+ for an entree but not in these chairs. They are low and uncomfortable and at the very least need a cushion.
Overall a lovely evening and we will go back - with cushions in hand.
In the past, I had often given good or excellent ratings for this restaurant, both with the quality of food, service and value. I am guessing due to staffing issues coming out of the pandemic (even though they've opened up for outside seating for quite awhile now, and inside for quite a few days), the level of service was subpar, we had to hunt down the servers several times for something as basic as S+P, bread+butter, ordering dessert, etc. The quality of the food was definitely not the same. I had a halibut, and it was mushy in texture, did not taste fresh, the rice with cilantro was soggy. Our friends had the chicken cordon bleu, and the seafood pasta, the chicken was quite dry, the seafood pasta was supposed to come with lobster, but the server came back and said they ran out of lobster and they were replacing with crab. Unfortunately, when the dish was served, there really was not crab to be found in the dish, just a few shrimps and fish. The dishes were all between $30 to $40 for each entree, which in the past would have been acceptable, because the quality was good, unfortunately, this time, everyone was disappointed. I hope management can figure out how to up their game back to the previous standards. I will give them another try in a few months, hopefully they will have figured out all the post pandemic staffing challenges by then.
The food wasn't french. Too expensive for the quality of the food: frozen fries, crab (not in season) instead of lobster. :(
The moment we walk in the vibe was very amazing, the hostess was very helpful and the food and drinks were amazing
Food was way beyond our expectations.
Can't wait to go back
We decided to try somewhere new for our anniversary and we were not disappointed. They brought us champagne to toast our big night to start. The food was wonderful- we had seafood pasta and the short ribs. We were also given some dessert drinks to go along with our peach tart- so warm and lovely. We will be going back soon.
We celebrated our anniversary. Awesome food and service. Highly recommend. Loved the chicken cordon blue and the halibut. Thank you to our wait staff Christina and David for a very enjoyable evening!
So happy to see the same faces at this local treasure!!!!!
We were seated inside. The service was professional and also warm and welcoming. Great staff! We were early diners and didn't realize that we were fortunate to be done before the place filled up because the noise level made conversation difficult. The food was well prepared and each course arrived perfectly. Start with the shared cheese plate. Wonderful!
Great food and excellent service. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.
It’s amazing food, incredible wine list and a great personal.
Food was excellent, staff was so kind and courteous, ambience was so cute.
Very disappointed. I took family here for a birthday celebration because of the high reviews. It is next to a very busy road and traffic noise and exhaust is awful. The food was tepid on arrival. Our waitress was kind and honest. Salad was wilted and over dressed. The fish was dried out on the top and not hot. It was very mediocre French food. I would not go back.
So great to have a fine dining experience indoors again!
We had yet another great meal at Walter Hanzel. Food, wine & service from upbeat Heather was exceptional!
Had the halibut, it was excellent!
We were seated outside, on a cool night, with a heater close by. Great experience, wonderful food, and excellent/attentive service.
We always love Walter Hansel Bistro. Best in French food Sonoma County.
Ate in the outdoor patio. Tables were nicely spread apart. Food was delicious. French fries were crisp and nicely salted. Halibut was the best I've had. And of course the Walter Hansel Chardonnay was excellent. A wonderful meal.
Mothers Day outside dining. Food was very good and good portions. Waiter was rarely seen, ie. checking on us. Thus made service slower than normal. Usually it's very good there. Was a notch below their normal excellent service
Great service. Halibut and Salmon delicious as were lobster bisque and Ceasar’s salad. Start with the baked Brie cheese ... the best. Very nice Mother’s Day dinners.
I have been here many times in the past and it was great. they must have lost their chef during the pandemic
because the menu is very limited now and the food totally different. One of our meals, the fish was delivered to the table only half cooked. Clearly no one was on quality control, very disapointing.
High quality food and service. The wine list is great with very reasonable prices. The food comes out hot and delicious. A great spot for any occasion.
Great evening out!
Very good food, with the exception of an overdressed Ceasar salad with way too much cheese and dressing. Entrees were really good and beautifully prepared.
