Vessel at Kona Kai Resort Ratings and Reviews
A great place for a rendezvous with out-of-town friends. For the benefit of OpenTable and its users, I do have to comment that using an OpenTable dining reward there was quite difficult. I had the award on my mobile phone, but the restaurant insisted on a printed copy. I spent about an hour (of our dinner time) attempting to print it out at the Kona Kai business center and at the front desk; all these attempts failed (the business center is minimally equipped and not user-friendly). Ultimately I emailed the award to the dining room manager, who helpfully printed it out in his office. OpenTable should warn customers to print awards in advance to avoid this kind of snafu, particularly because awards must be assigned to a selected restaurant in advance, so a botched chance to use the award might waste it.
We were staying in San Diego and saw that it was near us and that it was on Open Table. The online menu indicated a wide range of fare, it was late (9:30), and we tried it. We were pleased with the drink, the food, the service, and the live music (not too loud, just right. We will go back some time we are in San Diego.
The food was excellent! Customer service however, was not good. When we first entered the restaurant, the hostess in front just found us a seat but did not even greet us. The man that was serving our table took a long time to serve us. When a larger group of people eventually began to he focus more on that group than me an my wife even though we were here a half hour before. We were interested in ordering more food since we enjoyed it so much but had wait a considerable time to order. Eventually I just asked for the check and left. To top It off, the hostess never thanked us for coming or said goodbye. Although the waiter did apoligize for the service that we were not given and credited my coffee that I had drank, I probably wouldn't go there again as they pretty much revealed how they feel about customers that may not have as much money to give than others.
We celebrate new year eve there , it was very lovely , food was delicious , and portions was big !! Love calamary frite , and tuna tataki , also we like live music , it was really fun . That night , thank you for hat and tiara , to celebrate new year !!! It was surprisingly nice !!!
And its very convenient. Its at the resort , we stay there .
We ate at Vessel on Christmas. It was a prize-fixe menu, only offering 2 or 3 dinner entrees, so you would think they would get it right, but not so. Service was abysmal, food was barely like warm, and the prime rib was mostly fat.
The regular menu did look good, and if we are back in San Diego we will consider trying that, since the manager, David, did seem genuinely upset that we were so unhappy and did everything he could to try to correct the situation. The Kona Kai property is nice and we were able to sit outside, which helped improve the experience.
We went for Christmas dinner. Food was amazing! Menu was prix fix and the selection was good, but we were told they were out of the lobster bisque, which we wanted. We were offered chowder as a substitute. We selected the salad, but the tables around us continued to get the bisque, as well as my son. ???? Service was friendly but slow, which we didn't mind. Cocktails were good too.
Booked Christmas dinner, got a confirmation call for Christmas dinner, got there and they weren't serving the fixed menu for 1.5 hrs, so only bar food. Most of the food was cold. Waiter was nice but very slow and clearly stressed. Also had to send back a basic Moscow Mule.
We dined here for New Years Eve dinner after Mass and it was perfection because we were granted the covered outdoor patio. It was quiet and luckily we finished our meals before the live band started.
If you want to be seated in the more lit up and lively indoor bar, that is an option as well.
I liked the free glass of wine with Yelp check-in and you will love their warm bread!
Went for an early happy hour dinner before watching the "Parade of Lights" on the harbor. We were seated at a comfy window booth overlooking the marina. We did not realize that this place is actually a sports bar - there is a big round bar in the middle of the restaurant and with football on TV, the bar patrons were really whooping it up - yelling and shouting. There isn't much room inside and the noise is very out of character with the chic waterfront dining atmosphere the restaurant is trying to convey. There are tables outside with heaters - which would be a better bet if you want to have a conversation. The food was OK - but my fish & chips was a bit burned. Got a free glass of wine by checking in on Yelp. Glad for the happy hour pricing! Our waitress was awesome, very friendly, attentive, and helpful.
I have said this many times in the past, this is a restaurant with an amazing menu led by Executive Chef Roy Hendrickson. The food is absolutely delicious, plated beautifully. There is always a nice surprise, the Norwegian Trout was crazy good and my favorite dish, the pork chop I think is the best you will ever taste. Our server, Maran, was attentive but not intrusive.
Although the food was good; the service was good, I was unprepared for the 3.5% surcharge at the end of the meal. I will not knowingly patronize any restaurant that charges this surcharge. It is not fair to the server; the restaurant is making enough profit without gouging the public. If food goes up then raise the price. If wages go up then raise the price. Don't take it out on the server. Too bad. Vessels WAS one of my favorite places to go.
Chef Roy Hendrickson continues to amaze with a culinary experience that all San Diegans and visitors to America's finest city need to take time to enjoy his menu. The lobster Mac & Cheese, pork chop and desserts are not to be missed. Peter, our server was there when we needed him and not intrusive into our dining experience. Defiantly on my top places to eat list.
From the cheese plate, lobster mac & cheese, grilled shrimp to a pork chop that can only be described a heavenly to a dessert of German Chocolate Waffle with house made ice cream. Even Chef Roy came out to see how the meal was and let me mention that Peter our server, was attentive, enthusiastic, energetic but not overwhelming. All in all an amzing meal with great views and a fantastic atmosphere.
Went for Sunday Brunch. Great location and views. Enjoyable entertainment (single guitarist). Good food, but nothing to get too excited about. It could be great, but never will be because the service was indifferent at best. Hostess argued with me about whether I had an open table reservation until I showed her the confirmation-then it was all attitude. Waiter disappeared for long stretches, and apparently forgot to order one of our group's entrees Great idea with a bottomless bloody mary bar, but bartender seldom available (waited once for over 10 minutes-despite a $10 tip) for the glass and vodka, and the condiment station was ALWAYS out of celery, bacon and others. Having been in the business, there's a serious management/supervision problem (at least on Sundays).
God overall. However, We were curious about the "service charge" added to our bill. I asked the guy at the front and he said it was a service charge to cover the health insurance he provides for the employees. First time we've ever run into this. Not sure I agree with this added tax on my bill.
The scallops are perfection! Happy Hour choices are delicious and abundant in size. Peter was our server and his cheerful, welcoming attitude will make any meal a special occasion! A sweet reunion took place while I was there with my mom. A couple was celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Apparently they had their first date at Vessel and their friends who had introduced them were there to surprise them. The restaurant's staff was in on the surprise -really nice to see!
Celebrated my mother's 87th birthday at vessel restaurant. Service was wonderful, the fresh fish was amazing, perfectly cooked with perfectly cooked vegetables. The lava cake dessert was delicious. The noise level inside the restaurant was very loud we sat outside which was very bright and we did not have hats, we moved tables several times trying to find the right spot to keep everybody happy;) The view is gorgeous I just wish the restaurant could control the inside noise a little bit better there was no music on that we could hear .
