it just took a while to get out gift certificates we asked for as soon as we sat down
We ate dinner here to get early entry into The National and very much enjoyed it. all around very good experience. Food was delicious. Only problem with food is limited menu, quality was high. Server was great and we were okay to hang around after dinner while waiting for our concert.
Me and my husband really enjoyed ourselves even doe we didn't witness the jazz band. But the food was outstanding. But we will come again and hopes that we will see a jazz band. The waitress was excellent. Overall the restaurant superb. And nowing that you have a band on Thursday nights we will be there too. So now we no where to dine Just for two. Thank you ALICE.
We had a great time at Vagabond and look forward to our next experience. Service was great, food was excellent. Not an issue but worth noting, the noise level was good but business started to pick up close to 7 pm and it rose substantially. Portions were generous and unfortunately we were attending a concert next door so no leftovers.
Best pork chops I’ve ever had! Cheesy grits were also fabulous!
We were practically the first to be seated for dinner Saturday evening. They were already out of deviled eggs and only had enough shrimp for two of three shrimp dishes. Pork chop bites were good, but for $8 kind of expected more than a few pieces of porkchop fried and thrown on a plate like chicken nuggets. Drinks were great.
My son and I had dinner before a concert and they let us know about the time constraints if we wanted early admission. Our server was Brook and she did a superb job of taking care of us. I had the fried catfish with collard greens & Mac and Cheese. Wonderful! Everything was just as a good southern meal should be. My son had the shrimp po' boy with fries. Ate it all and said he would get again. Overall a great evening with delicious food and friendly, professional service.
Staff and service were wonderful! We did early entry for The Wallflowers and it was perfect!
Everyone was super nice! Food great. Drinks great.
Was gong to the National for the Eli Young concert
Food was Not as ordered and cold, service was slow even when not crowded. Very disappointed in experience.
Visited for the early entry program, as I always do when I come to town, and I never expect much from this restaurant. The food was okay, but the drinks are better. The crabcake is not on the menu anymore which bums me out. I'm not sure if they have seasonal menus, but if I had to write this review while they had crabcakes on the menu, I would give 5-stars across the board.
All over the world, the easier any type of enterprise has it in finding customers, the less they do to earn their esteem and trust.
Seems to me this applies to the Vagabond, which is surrounded by huge venues and few eateries.
Saw a guy leave after waiting forever for his food. Our own food took forever.
The poor waitress was very green and didn't really know how to cope. Not her fault, she meant well, even though she was so green she couldn't see that the sparkling wine she brought us was utterly flat. Wine which a presumably knowledgeable bartender poured and sent out.
The hostess utterly failed, allowing in a very visibly shady character who proceed to solicit every table for money before someone came out to encourage them to leave. I took that person to task for what happened, and their indifference was palpable and deep.
The food was edible, undistinguished, and zero effort expended to dress it up.
Desperately needs acoustic tiles.
Food was meh. Menu changed and the good food was gone. The fried pork bites were dry and the fries were too salty. Would not return in the future
Pleasantly surprised by quality and creativity of the food. Unique atmosphere downstairs. Will return frequently.
Went for an early dinner and to take advantage and of early admission to The National...while the service was terrific we found the menu to be a bit limited and definitely a bit expensive for what we got.
My favorite was the Brussel sprout appetizer! Also tried the Cajun blackened Alfredo pasta...not much flavor or spice. Also had a shrimp p’boy which was just ok
Nice beer selection but probably will not be going back unless they offer more options
Fantastic food and drinks. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff
This was an awesome experience for a celebratory dinner for my best friend's birthday. Devin, our waiter provided service that was beyond excellent. He was very hospitable and made our entire party feel welcomed. It was a great experience overall.
Very small menu. Ordered the Deviled Eggs as the appetizer and the Shrimp Po Boy as the Entree. The eggs were good, not great at $1 dollar an egg, probably wouldn't buy them again. The Po Boy came with only 4 Shrimp, while nice sized were overcooked and hard and slightly chewy. The sandwich needed more sauce and a higher meat to bread ratio, as the bread overpowered everything, the bread should simply be a vessel to carry the goodness. Service was fast, friendly and accurate, so no complaints there. Overall would go back to try something else. Will probably go every time before a concert at the National due to the early access feature. All the food was probably $2-3 dollars overpriced, but alas that is Richmond.
The food was very yummy, tasted clean and refreshing on a hot Saturday evening. The service was amazing and the staff is very friendly. The interior of the restaurant is bigger than it appears- and the downstairs is even more of a surprise. Loved the visit!
there was a concert at the National and the place was overloaded, with not enough help to serve - but overall the food was very good and a value for the money - I definitely recommend the place, even if you go when you're going to the concert, just get there early
The Entire Evening Was Perfect! The Food was Hot, Flavorful and a Plenty! Oh Yeah that drink “Silly Rabbit” it was on point too.. For sure I will be back!
If you haven't been please go you wont b upset the customer service is 6 stars the night I went it was storming and the employees where walking people out with umbrellas very impressive food was delicious just amazing.
Good food but disorganized staff. Wrong drinks, didn't check us in under our reservation (so it looked like we didn't go at all)
Portion size was good. We'd still go again, especially since its right next to the music venue
We got the early dine in reservation before a concert at the National theater.
We waited 45 min for over cooked food. Our waiter was great but the delay caused us to rush through dinner to get in early.
We had friends who came and never saw a waiter to order. Also people walked in went downstairs and got in early without spending any extra$$ as a requirement that this restaurant requires for early access. BTW there was no early entrance, we went in at 7 pm like everyone else
Reserved table was waiting for us and set. Wingettes were cooked very well and tasted great. I was going to a show at National so went here so I could get the early entry. Placed order for one salad & 6 appetizers around 550pm. They arrived around 630pm, with 2 items missing. We had to enter for the show at 645pm. They were nice enough to give money back on stuff that never arrived. Drink service was timely.
Advantage of eating there is getting into The National next door early. Food service somewhat disorganized.
The service was slow despite there being many open tables. The waiter was friendly and patient with my elderly grandmother when he greeted her and asked for her order, but he did not check on the table as often as he should have. The appetizers came out with the entrees, which was disappointing. The lighting was extremely dim. The music was at "club/lounge" level. The food was extremely salty and the portions (for some entrees like the catfish sandwich) were NOT generous in fact the piece of bread was bigger than the piece of fish. I'm sorry I took my mother and grandmother here for an early Mother's Day dinner. They deserved better.
The food was excellent. The catfish was flaky and seasoned well. Shrimp and Grits were no longer on the menu but the chef fixed it at my request. It was delicious. I will definitely be back!
This is supposed to be an upscale Mama J’s but it is not! You are better off going to Mama J’s! Collard greens tasted like they came out of a can! Never again.
Great service! Interesting southern inspired food and fantastic cocktails.
Just went there to get in early for Whitesnake. Cheese grits were hard-not done. Bread pudding was pure liquid smoke and fried apples. Had reservations for 5, food didn't come until 5:50. Because of the concert it was beyond packed. Otherwise it was okay. Nothing to be excited about. They really need to clean the whatever off the ceiling and seriously so a good clean on the place.
We dined at Vagabond to take advantage of the early entry option for The National Theater nextdoor. We had never done this before and the wait staff was very helpful in explaining what we needed to do. And they made sure we were served and had our check in plenty of time to make the show.
Wonderful food and ambience!!!! Great live music downstairs and staff is super friendly. Highly recommend!
We have a standing date in the third Tuesday of every month and this time we were three as two were attending a funeral. Vagabond has been in the list I keep of places to try and it didn’t disappoint.
The fried shrimp appetizer were very tasty and a good, light breading that did not overwhelm the flavor.
Entrees consumed were pork chop, mashed potato (no green vegetables) and a muffin. 7/10.
Hamburger with fries, and blackened salmon, and both sandwiches were good, although the fries were a little salty. The salmon was cooked to my liking (not well done) and the burger medium.
That night was apparently open mike night and the downstairs venue looked perfect for entertainment.
A fun place and a fun night.
The food was tasty. Not a large selection but what was provided was great. Waitress accommodated the large party well. Nice atmosphere
Awesome space, food, and customer service! When I looked at the menu I instantly knew grilled pork chops! They did not disappoint, nor did the mashed potatoes, mac-N-cheese, or brussel sprouts!
Came there for dinner and drinks before a show... we had such a good time at Vagabond before the show that after the show we went back for more drinks. Had a blast there, If ever in downtown Richmond again I will make this visit.
I didn’t like that the kitchen closed before 11:00 p.m.. I wanted to order the bread pudding to go.
A solid choice for a downtown meal, especially if you are attending an event at The National. Drinks are pricey but the menu is reasonable. A couple of good vegetarian options. The French fries are delicious! Competent wait staff.
