Chef Tyson Cole, winner of the 2011 James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef Southwest--Thank you Uchi and Uchiko family and friends for your support!
Uchi showcases the culinary talents of executive chef and sushi master Tyson Cole, winner of the "best new chef in America 2005" by Food and Wine magazine. His exciting menu expands on the Japanese tradition with new flavors and influences. Uchi means "house," and like many sushi bars in Japan, Uchi is located in a refurbished old home. Its vibrant design adds a fresh dimension to the neighborhood and has been warmly received by Austin's diverse dining crowd.
Uchi accepts a very limited number of reservations and reserves the majority of the dining room for walk-in availability. Most seating is done on a first-come, first-serve basis. All parties must be complete before being seated.
What Insiders Are Saying
An adventurous Japanese restaurant we love so much we'd consider buying property nearby.
Brian was great. Food was amazing... BUT... Consistently 30 min or more behind. Completely unacceptable and no excuses or provisions even offered. You make a reservation sometimes 2 months in advance and show up early/on time only to wait 30 - 60 min. This restaurant used to be the epitome of service and has completely lost their edge. Now 4 visits in a row with absurd delays. Just go somewhere else.
Fabulous and lovely place - food is out of this world. Highly recommended
Unusual for Uchi, we waited 10 minutes before greeted at our table by our sever. The food is incomparable to any other place. Just exquisite! Another uncommon occurrence was that several of our dishes were paced rather quickly but did not make the experience unpleasant. It is always a delight to dine here!
Our server was outstanding. The details were not missed. She went above and beyond, and it made for a wonderful experience for 3 guys on business from Toronto.
Congratulations on all the accolades. Well deserved.
The service here is always exceptional. As a celiac, it's rare to find a place that is truly confident in creating a safe meal for me. The staff here goes above and beyond, delivering an exceptional and worry-free meal in the process. Love, love, love this place!
Food at Uchi is outstanding. Our only knock on the restaurant is when various servers bring a dish to the table, they quickly and in mumbled fashion explain what it is. None of us were able to hear or understand the descriptions. And that is a shame, because the various ingredients work well together, if we only knew what they were.
If you are a foodie you will love this place. We had Chef’s Omakase, and were pleasantly surprised. Sushi pieces are small but very flavorful. I loved different sauces they use. Very authentic. Hamachi Nabe and baked escolar was incredible. Very happy I chose this place for my husband’s birthday.
This was our 5th trip to Uchi and was by far the best. Mandy was our server and I can honestly say I've never had better service before.
Our server was very informed on each dish, and she came to our table frequently to fill our waters and take our next orders. I will say that the food service was slower, as it was a busy night. However, our server kept us updated on each plate that we ordered, keeping us from getting in a sour mood. I don't remember her name, but she had short hair and a girl named Olivia was shadowing her for training. The food was amazing as always, and it was a really special dinner for my husband's birthday :) The only advice I have is to hire more sushi chefs so that there isn't a long wait for food service. This is the first time we've been to the Austin location, and we haven't encountered slow food service at the other locations before. But other than that, keep it up Uchi! :)
My wife and I had a wonderful evening at Uchi. The staff was very helpful as it was our first time there.
Simply the best eating experience in the state of Texas.
The absolute best dining experience I have ever had. Not only is the food unbelievable, but the service as well. It is a fine dining place for a special occasion or date night. I would recommend to anyone and everyone. The noise level is a bit loud but the place is unbelievable.
Truly one of the best dining experiences I’ve had. The restaurant is very popular. So be sure to book a table or you’ll be waiting at least a couple of hours (and I went on a Wednesday). The staff are wonderful and the food truly mind blowing. I may just move to Austin!
Excellent food and service, Uchi continues to earn it's impeccable reputation.
Great experience. Amazing food. Superior service.
Based on others experiences I think this restaurant was great at one point but is now past its prime. Overall the flavors of the food seemed quite muddled especially compared to the clean sharp experience you normally associate with Japanese food. We got the omakase 10 course which was an ample amount of food however the pacing and progression food seemed haphazzard at best. There were some longer wait periods between dishes and at other times two or three would appear at the same time. We dined on a Sunday which is not a delivery day but even so the fish lacked freshness. I think the best course was the foie nigiri a spin on the classic Unagi. Overall an underwhelming but not unpleasant experience.
I love Uchi. I love it. They are incredible at food and service. I'd recommend them to any and everyone.
Chose the $100/each (2), chef decided 5 course meal. Very little food and only 3 single pieces of actual nigiri each. Other courses were small sashimi samples, one small piece of miso covered cooked fish, one tempura covered fish paste, and small shared desert. Uchi makes a lot of money from this option.
Staff was amazing, friendly, and was the best part of the experience.
SO good. And so conscientious regarding allergies and whatnot.
We enjoyed it all except our server was nasty for some unknown reason. She was nice to the table on either side of us so we somehow offended her as she ignored us, never smiled or even asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. Hostess was excellent and food was very good
Amazing food and service. Best restaurant in Austin!
Best food in Austin. Service was attentive and accommodating. Would recommend 10/10
Honestly, it just didn’t live up to the hype. We had really high expectations going into it, which is reasonable. Although the fish was beautiful, it just wasn’t amazing. None of the dishes blew us away, and we made sure to try all of our waitresses’ recommendations from the different categories. We wouldn’t recommended it
Uchi is a very good restaurant which is quite popular, we made a reservation a few weeks in advance and still had to wait 15 minutes before being seated, our server was very professional and helpful. The room was quite loud and our seats not comfortable enough for the length of the meal. The food was fresh interesting and very enjoyable. We will return
Everything we ate was delicious and the space has a great calm and inviting ambience. Since we had never been there, the waiter gave us some wonderful suggestions and we were pleasantly surprised by everything we ordered.
Again, a wonderful experience!! The food continues to be amazing!! We always request John as our server and he guides us through the menu allowing us to experiment with dishes we ordinarily not select. He is also aware of our favorites and weaves those dishes in. We had a delightful cold sake drink per John's recommendation. Uchi still remains our favorite restaurant anywhere!! And we have been eating there from it's inception when Tyson was working the sushi bar!!!
Very creative and high quality Japanese cuisine. Attention to detail. Very knowledgeable staff.
What a great evening and our server was so helpful in explaining the dishes and guiding us through the experience. Great food and no one left hungry. We will be back!
As always delicious and beyond perfect 🖤 the desert was to die for brioche bread with honey🖤
It was my 26th birthday and had the best meal to start my 26th year
We were there for happy hour and it was great getting to try a bunch of yummy sushi.
Amazing top class international food level. John our waiter best ever!
Great service and as always food was outstanding.
Amazing food!! Service was a bit rushed for turnover but the waiter made excellent suggestions from the menu. Amazing happy hour.
My husband and I have found the best way to experience Uchi is to have our waiter plan our menu and last night Matt did an incredible job pacing our courses and delivering a great experience for our date night. The courses all flowed nicely and we ended on the perfect bite. We will definitely be asking for him the next time we come.
We've wanted to try Uchi for a few years and are glad we finally did! It lived up to the hype. Food was amazing and our service was great.
Our server was very knowledgable of the menu and gave us great recommendations that went beyond our standards.
