Uchi showcases the culinary talents of executive chef and sushi master Tyson Cole, winner of the "best new chef in America 2005" by Food and Wine magazine. His exciting menu expands on the Japanese tradition with new flavors and influences. Uchi means "house," and like many sushi bars in Japan, Uchi is located in a refurbished old home. Its vibrant design adds a fresh dimension to the neighborhood and has been warmly received by Austin's diverse dining crowd. Uchi accepts a very limited number of reservations and reserves the majority of the dining room for walk-in availability. Most seating is done on a first-come, first-serve basis. All parties must be complete before being seated.
What Insiders Are Saying
An adventurous Japanese restaurant we love so much we'd consider buying property nearby.
Lives up to the hype. The staff are si friendky and are genuinely happy to be working there and happy working with each other.
The good: Food was prompt and very good. Service was also very good.
The bad: had to wait until nearly 15 minutes after our scheduled open table reservation to be seated. Seats were awkward and I was bumped every time someone walked by and in the middle of the restaurant. Noise was so high had to practically yell to my wife to be heard. Will not go back as the overall experience vs price paid is not worth it.
Very good great food and good service
I have a gluten allergy (celiac) and they were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I have never really had sushi before outside a couple of cooked rolls. Our server John was excellent and his suggestions were dead on. Will be returning.
Unbelievable experience at Uchi - world-class hospitality and food.
Meal without the kids
Extraordinario. Excelente recomwndacion
French Japenese Sushi. It's awesome and luxury. Thus, it is better for some business case or ceremony of love.
I am from japan and lived in Seattle for over 10 years before moved to Texas. The food was good but it was the smallest sushi I’ve ever eaten and honestly I think it was way overpriced and overrated. You can get much better fresh sushi for better price all over in west coast.
Amazing food, great service, friendly staff and a good vibe. Perfect place for our anniversary and we'll definitely be going back.
World class food and service
Having heard recommendations and reviews of this place I was keen for the reality to match the hype. Uchi prices itself as, and therefore opens itself to direct comparison to, a world-class Asian-fusion restaurant. Our experience was anything but. We were quickly ushered to the back of the aged interior of this Japanese themed hut and reserved our judgment for the food. We ordered the ten course tasting menu which was served, intermittently, over a two hour time frame. A tasting experience in this price range should be expertly paced, but our experience was long periods of waiting and then two dishes hitting the table at once – with no explanation as to why. When questioned, we were told "it's just the nature of how dishes leave the kitchen. Sorry if that wasn't what you expected." Uh huh, thanks, I know how a premium tasting menu works – this isn't it. The quality of food was generally mediocre, steak sashimi was served cold with tough and stringy meat – this I assume was the flagship dish, a supposed contender to Nobu's black cod with miso. A salad was uninspired with an attempt to spruce up some pedestrian grape tomatoes and cilantro with some exotic fruit. There were clear attempts at creativity, the seaweed rolls with tempura crabs were an interesting idea, but appeared to be lacking any vinegar or citrus notes and therefore were either ill-conceived or incorrectly prepared. Neither is acceptable at this price range, which at $104 a head for the tasting menu, isn't for the faint of heart. A poor facsimile of the Asian-fusion experience – save your money and go elsewhere.
We go here once a year to celebrate our anniversary. This year we went early to also celebrate with our friends in town. As always, everything tasted amazing, and we really appreciate Uchi blessing us with a treat to celebrate the day!
Flavor bombs in a series of fabulous combinations. Service and cadence of food prep spot on. Amazing creativity on display.
We visited for a late dinner and were quite pleased. The cocktails and sake were great and the menu very creative. If you're looking for the same old tired California or Philadelphia roll this is not your place. We followed our waiter' s advice and approached the evening tapas style. We ordered a few things at a time, choosing mostly the unique items from the cold and hot menus though we did have a couple of rolls. We stopped ordering just in time to still have room for dessert and were really glad we did. The service was exceptional. When we arrived our table was not quite ready so we were directed to the patio where we started with drinks. We were pleasantly surprised that they simply applied our drinks to the final bill rather than making us pay two separate bills as most restaurants do. Great experience!!! Would definitely go back and recommend.
Amazing food and perfect service
You cannot go wrong at uchi. Never had anything that was outstanding.
I came here with friends visiting from out of town. Our food was delicious and our server was attentive and great. The food is simply something from out of this world. I never realized that there was such a thing as "Good Sushi". But after eating at Uchi, I don't think I can eat sushi/fish any place else - it just doesn't compare. My friends said it was the best meal they'd ever eaten (now that's saying something!). They did the Chef's Tasting (6 courses) and I ordered off the Sake Social menu. All in all, it was a great night and so glad we went there!
Uchi was a really nice place for date night. The happy hour is great value and there are some great items on there. A few of the items really stood out as amazing such as the salmon hand roll, the fois gras and the Thai sausage. The other items we tried were good but not as stand out. The ambience was nice and the service was perfect.
Anniversary dinner - everything was amazzzzing!
First time dining here. Went to celebrate our son’s Birthday. Delicious food. Complex flavors. Excellent service. Great that the items we ordered were brought to the table staggered so we could enjoy one or two things at a time instead of everything at once. Excellent overall experience!!
Our experience at Uchi was fantastic. We couldn’t decide on what to order because everything sounded so appetizing. Luckily our server recommended courses and we were able to sit back, relax and enjoy 7-8 courses of the most delicious food. The service was impeccable and we will be back.
It’s a little different than most sushi restaurants I’ve been to. They take some extra liberties with the fish, whether that’s a little lemon zest or some miso. It’s all tasty, just a little different than I’m used to.
Amazing food highly recommended for anyone who is looking for an amazing meal.
Bill was $172 and gave a $75 gift card and had$27.06 taken off. As a regular I feel I was tried to being taken advantage of. I just got my credit card bill and it’s still wrong.
Simple math - still wrong
Uchi's menu never stops changing and is always full of outrageously delicious creations.
Amazing! Just let it happen...our server did a fantastic job of taking care of us ...we let him pick everything for us and it was one of the best meals we have ever had!
Small, pretentious and not that great. Sake is good but thats it.
Outstanding food and service - can't wait to return.
Fish is good, but Sushi rice is not the best rice, not soft enough and do not have enough acidity.
Very noisy, packed with people.
A decent Sushi place in Austin. good for friend get together and just have some fun.
Waitress was really helpful with guiding our selections and then pacing them out so that we could take our time and enjoy.
Every mouthful was pretty amazing. I think the only thing I didn’t enjoy fully was a dessert special but that is because I was visualizing a lot of nectarines and there were only three tiny slivers.
Very loud and AC was a bit too cold for my taste but that’s why I always have a sweater.
Excellent evening at Uchi! The service was impeccable, and the food was divine! I can't wait for the next Uchi outing!
I'm not sure what happened but it took the kitchen around 2 hours to get 4 rolls, vegetable tempura, and a soup. The food was pretty good when it came out, but nothing that knocked my socks off. The server was attentive.
Uchi went above and beyond for my sisters birthday; they even made her a special treat instead of the traditional desert because she doesn’t have a sweet tooth!
I highly recommend Uchi for any and ALL occasions!
Food was outstanding. All of the fish was so fresh and delicious. Our server was also outstanding!
The food was amazing! We ordered so many different things from the menu and all were fabulous. The cocktail I had was not as good as the food as i felt there wasn't any sake in my strawberry basil drink. I had 3 of them and it was just all juice, but the deliciousnessn of the food made me forget how much the drinks lacked the alcohol. For dessert we had the ice cream sandwiches. All were delicious just very small portions
Don’t go HORRIBLE service.
Amazing! Felipe was outstanding
