Chef Tyson Cole, winner of the 2011 James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef Southwest--Thank you Uchi and Uchiko family and friends for your support!
Uchi showcases the culinary talents of executive chef and sushi master Tyson Cole, winner of the "best new chef in America 2005" by Food and Wine magazine. His exciting menu expands on the Japanese tradition with new flavors and influences. Uchi means "house," and like many sushi bars in Japan, Uchi is located in a refurbished old home. Its vibrant design adds a fresh dimension to the neighborhood and has been warmly received by Austin's diverse dining crowd.
Uchi accepts a very limited number of reservations and reserves the majority of the dining room for walk-in availability. Most seating is done on a first-come, first-serve basis. All parties must be complete before being seated.
What Insiders Are Saying
An adventurous Japanese restaurant we love so much we'd consider buying property nearby.
One of my favorites for Japanese dining in Austin. Always an amazing experience and service is superb.
It was absolutely incredible and our favorite spot in town. We are always floored by the freshness and level of service Uchi has to offer. The only thing that made us angry is that we heard that you’re dropping the peanut butter semifreddo from the menu, which feels criminal. We both have actually, literally dreamed about it and there is goes. Please reconsider. Refreshed dessert menu, be damned!
Otherwise, though, 50 starts out of 5.
Great food, great service, the best restaurant I've been to here in Austin!
Celebrated our 9
Great food, great service. I have the expanded-palate of a candy-crazed toddler, and don't like sushi at all, but still managed to have a fantastic meal.
That said, the staff are great and on the 2-person tasting we had, they insisted on swapping out a plate even though we tried to say it was all good and fine b/c we were served something we didn't quite like (personal preference, the dish was otherwise excellently prepared).
We visited for the first time in years for my wife's birthday, and I can say confidently that we will be back for mine, and more.
Seriously, one of the best restaurants in ATX. Period. Whether local or visiting, make time in advance to visit Uchi.
The food is BEYOND delicious. John S. was our server and was excellent!
Amazing! Best ever!
Innovative and lip-smacking! The staff, Mandy was friendly and had a good taste, giving us couple of promising recommendations.
Uchi was a TOTAL DREAM!
Best vegetarian and vegan sushi
A great restaurant which
I've been to Uchi 50+ times over 15 years and it's one of my favorite restaurants anywhere in the world. This was the first visit with any disappointment....It just felt tired. Some of the fish wasn't as fresh as I would want, and some of the presentation was sloppy. Amazing service and ambiance as always. Hope this was just a glitch that night.
One of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The food was amazing and our server was phenomenal.
Always a great eat and experience
One of the best dining experiences of my life - from the atmosphere to the creativity and quality of the food to the incredible conversation with the sushi chef and servers. I look forward to returning again and again. Sit at the sushi bar. Try multiple different sakes with half-pours, and do the omakase.
We always went to Uchi for anniversaries & I we enjoyed introducing our daughter to Uchi
It was perfect
The first time I dined at Uchi was nothing short of magical. We were seated at the sushi bar where it seemed we had our own personal chef. He asked a few questions about our preferences and then began serving plates. Each one was divine. Pricey but worth every penny. This is how I recommend you experience Uchi.
Our second visit we were seated at a high top near the restrooms. It was so loud we couldn’t hear each other or our server. She was wonderful under the circumstances. Our food was okay but we left feeling underwhelmed.
I highly recommend Uchi and will go back but I won’t set in the main dining room until they fix the noise level. It was atrocious.
Food was outstanding. Our server was THE BEST!!! She totally took care of making sure we had the ebst experience and didn't miss a beat!! We would go back every time we are in Austin.
It's great but it's way too loud. They need to either invest in different materials to deal with sound or expand so there's more room to disperse said sound. We also were seated in a very heavily trafficked area which for a (noted) anniversary dinner it's kind of disappointing. We probably won't be coming back.
It was just awesome!!!!
Always a pleasure!
I absolutely love the original aspect of this restaurant. The flavors you are exposed to are original and fantastic.
The food was wonderful and the service impeccable. Fully enjoyed our experience.
Ye ol' boyfriend and I brought my parents here last weekend. My dad has eaten at quite a few upscale sushi joints in his day (speaking of just US only in this instance, not in Japan), and he rated Uchi pretty much the best overall sushi experience he's had. I can't say that I've eaten at a lot of high-end sushi joints, but I agree that it was pretty amazing. There wasn't a single thing we didn't like - my dad even liked the Brussels sprouts, which he historically has thought are crap. The ambiance is decent and the place is kind of loud/crowded, but not anything crazy to where you can't hear each other speak. We'll say it's a testament to how great the food is and how many people want to eat there. Each dish was outstanding as was the service. Our server was very knowledgeable about absolutely everything (shout-out to the girl with the septum piercing, drank too much and can't remember her name) - the sake, the wine, the food. She knew it all and gave us neat little factoids. Totally worth it, will definitely come back. Seeing as how I live 15 minutes away, I was pretty sad with myself for not making an effort to come sooner. 10/10 would recommend to anyone - but let's leave the children with a babysitter.
Always an incredible sushi experience at Uchi. Wish it weren’t so expensive else we would frequent more often!
Uchi is always and amazing experience, both in food taste and presentation, and in service.
Service and food here is always great. Me and my wife come here a lot never disappointed. Our favorite chef Rudy is great. Makes it fun.
Over rated Asian fusion. The restaurant was busy on a Monday night. We had an 8:45 reservation and arrived 10 minutes early but we’re still not seated for another 20 minutes. The waiter took our order for drinks and apps and then our dinner order when he dropped the drinks off. The dinner arrived before the appetizers and the apps came after and they seemed to have forgot about one and we had to remind the waiter. With the amount of staff the had in the floor the service was slow. I was not impressed disappointed actually. Stick to what works Austin: food trucks.
The portions are very small. However, each item was very well presented and delicious. A little bit too much time between servings - especially sitting around waiting on dessert. I was especially disappointed in our table. I made the reservation almost one month in advance for my twin daughters birthday and they sat us all the way in the back by the bathrooms and the back door that kept opening and blowing in cold outside air. There were at least two other tables open closer to the front. Very disappointed...
Honestly, just another of Austin’s overrated destination restaurants. Food is tasty, but portions sizes are wildly underwhelming. Arriving slightly early, we were told rather abruptly “we will be ready for you at the time of your reservation”, except that it was more than 10 minutes past our reservation when they were actually ready for us. Our server tried to “course out” out selections but that just lead to 15 minutes between there being food on the table...
The food was amazing! Our server was Nolan and he was absolutely the BEST! He was so knowledgeable of the menu, made great suggestions and had great customer service! Will deff be back again!
Loved everything about the experience! Delicious and magical!
First time there and it was very impressive, staff was very friendly and helpful. It was pretty busy as it was the Saturday following Valentine’s Day but the chef had food circulating while we waited.
The food and service has gone down hill in the past two years. We went out for our belated Valentine's meal and were quite disappointed. We always loved Uchi. Now, it will be quite some time before we eat there again. This time, the food was quite underwhelming compared to the price.
Go early. The happy hour is good value. Probably best when mixed with the regular menu.
The food at Uchi is always great, and the service is very good, but it seems to be noisier every time I go. For my last visit I literally had to lean forward across the table and speak in a loud voice to be heard by my date who was sitting 3 feet away. It’s tiresome to have to do that throughout a long dinner. While I would recommend this restaurant for its excellent food, I am likely to choose a different restaurant in the future. And in case you’re thinking that perhaps my hearing is beginning to fail me, I’m 36, and my hearing is just fine.
Amazing restaurante amazing food and attended, awesome drinks I had a great nigh thanks
Amazing food and amazing service. Wait staff was very helpful in navigating the menu and really took care of us.
