Townhouse Bar and Grill

Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor.
1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.
This puts you at a distance of one and 1/2 blocks from the restaurant. You only need to walk one block up 59th, towards the Oakland Hills, to Doyle and make a right. The Townhouse will be on your left under the big Redwood tree.
This was our second time coming here and for my husbands birthday. The food is really good and my husband enjoys the prime rib. The service was great and over all we had a great experience.
Love this restaurant! Prices are reasonable. Service is solicitous. There is something so homey comfortable about dining there. We eat on the deck becausewe bringRobbie. Our golden doodle. We always leavewith a doggie bag as portions are very ample.
Over the years, I have very much enjoyed the Townhouse. The menu is dependable - good mix of grilled meats, pastas, fish. Nice selection - have never had a bad dish. I usually meet two girlfriends here for dinner and the wait staff are attentive yet not overwhelming. It is a comfortable spot for those "in the know". There's a small patio - maybe 8 tables, for outside seating on warm evenings.
The only think I do not like about the Townhouse - is a recent experience. It is extremely difficult to reach the restaurant by phone. Three days in a row. This may be a new or temporary problem, but very annoying nonetheless.
Waitperson was great. Food very good. So noisy inside we had to sit outside and it was a little cool for that.
I have had lunch or dinner at the Townhouse Bar and Grill for about 20 years...maybe been to this restaurant 100 times. That says it all don't you think? The restaurant is a classic neighborhood restaurant... lots of electricity, terrific food, first rate, friendly service, wonderful bar scene, etc. The price is right, too. Fortunately there is valet parking at lunch because the neighborhood is very populated. Unfortunately, for dinner you may have to drive around a bit to find a space.
All in all, an excellent restaurant experience.
Great place to dine. This is a hidden jewel
Food was enjoyable, good but not excellent. Lamb chops fatty. Service great but it took a long time to get our meal. Wouldn't want to wait that long next time.
Consistently great food !
I continue to meet friends from Alameda and Oakland at this gem of a spot .
Relaxed atmosphere and conducive for conversation. Sitting outside is a treat.
Tried the beet salad last time..yum
Service was impeccable.
I always enjoy the food and with a 12:45 reservation, the noise level was down.
As always, Townhouse was terrific. Good food and service, lively atmosphere. This time I was struck by how generous and tasty the cocktails were.
I love Townhouse! I always enjoy their menu. Many times I have a hard time deciding what I want to order because everything is so yummy! Their bread is to die for!
We stumbled upon this gem on OpenTable and had a great time. Food was delicious!!
Always a great meal at Townhouse. Peppercorn steak was excellent as were the scallops and Baby Back ribs my friends enjoyed. The avocado brushetta was incredible as was the fried calamari. Service not as good as in the past but our waiter rallied even with several large tables including one on the patio. Definitely will go back and highly recommend.
One our long time "go to" restaurants in the Oakland/Berkeley area for lunch and dinner. Casual atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable wait staff and, most importantly, well prepared, tasty food.
Excellent lunch and service
I enjoyed a superb dining experience! The service, food, and ambience was superior.
I've experienced a decade of visiting Townhouse with varying regularity, and I hope the next decade sees the same level of excellence and friendliness that the last has.
Enjoy most dishes over time but service is inconsistent. Noisy and loud.
Always good. I just like the atmosphere and great food.
Delicious! Just plain delicious! Given the location, I was unsure of the restaurant. But man o man was I in for a surprise!
Excellent service and very enjoyable!
Don’t let the exterior of this place fool you. TonwHouse is a party on a Friday night. Food is always consistently delicious (beet salad, baby back ribs, the mac and cheese is sinful) and the drink menu is outstanding. I love that they serve wine by the half glass — great wine list.
Outstanding food! Service was excellent! The website photos don't express the warmth and comfort of the dining room.
While we enjoyed the ambiance, the food was disappointing.
I love Townhouse! Unfortunately, this visit ended up being slightly disappointing. We were celebrating my friends' birthday. I made sure to put this in the comments (along with her name) when I made the reservation. I expected a little sweet treat with a candle would arrive for her. Sadly, it did not. This disappointment won't stop me from going to Townhouse. But, I probably won't attempt to go for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary.
I love Townhouse! I usually dine there at lunch time. So, to go at dinner time was a nice treat. The service was wonderful; thanks to our awesome waiter! I asked for salmon instead of grilled chicken skewers with the day's Greek salad special. Delicious! I wish that combination was a staple menu item. The only small complaint... high noise level. But, I equate that to being over 40. :) Thanks!
Townhouse is and hopefully always will be, an awesome neighborhood dining spot. Its friendly, casual to dressy and food is for all occasions. Wait staff is always on point and attentive. Thank you!
Always a great meal. Always consisently good.
This has been one of my most favorite restaurants in the e bay for Decades!! Always great food and good service. Sad to say that the server we had at my last visit was horrible. Ended asking to be given a new server...never had to do that ever, anywhere. What gives, Townhouse? Ended up being an entirely disappointing dinner. Gonna have to think twice about returning:(
Love this place, always a great choice for friends, out of towners, family. Wonderful, friendly, relaxed!
A bit loud due to lunch rush, but great overall experience.
Food and drinks was great service was good as well our waitress was attentive and had a great sense of humor, would definitely go back soon.
As always food is great. I craved for that special pasta again today. Very fresh and tasty cooked perfectly. Although service was a little slow that night . Very busy
I’ve been dining at Townhouse for years and always enjoy my time there. Food, service and overall ambiance is consistently good!! My only minor complaint: The server brings you this delicious warm bread with ROCK HARD, virtually UNSPREADABLE butter! How difficult would it be to set the ramekins out 45-60 minutes prior to service so at a minimum, the butter can be room temperature. Other than that, I love the place!!!
I had to flag down any waiter available for everything from bread to the bill. Once I received the bread it was burnt. My waiter was preoccupied with the bar and patio. It was 2pm on a Thursday not busy at all! This place is wide open with tables stacked on top of you. If you want to have some privacy and be able to talk don't come here during prime time. I booked on Open Table and mentioned it was our anniversary, they did acknowledge it. Food was great.
We hadn't been to Townhouse in a few years and boy have we been missing out. The food was fantastic. We will be back soon.
Great place. Excellent food, very friendly staff. We will definitely be back.
Service was excellent. I had to send my salad back because it was overdressed and our serving person cheerfully accomodated my wish. The dessert (flourless chocolate cake) was out of this world! Portions are very large. It would be possible to share with someone (which offsets the fairly high prices on salads and entrees.)
First time visit - had a great meal, service good too. Dinner salads are huge, enough for a meal. Mains - ribs and pork chop - were both awesome. Wish we had had room for dessert. Highly recommend.
