From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution.
Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor.
1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.

    We have a private lot next to the restaurant with space for 30 cars. Unfortunately the lot can be full and the restaurant is only a third full as many people arrive separately. Street parking is reasonably ample and not metered.
  • Public transit
    The free Emery-go-Round that operates from the MaCarthur BART Station will drop you off at 59th Street and Hollis.This puts you at a distance of one and 1/2 blocks from the restaurant. You only need to walk one block up 59th, towards the Oakland Hills, to Doyle and make a right. The Townhouse will be on your left under the big Redwood tree.

    This was our second time coming here and for my husbands birthday. The food is really good and my husband enjoys the prime rib. The service was great and over all we had a great experience.

    Love this restaurant! Prices are reasonable. Service is solicitous. There is something so homey comfortable about dining there. We eat on the deck becausewe bringRobbie. Our golden doodle. We always leavewith a doggie bag as portions are very ample.

    Over the years, I have very much enjoyed the Townhouse. The menu is dependable - good mix of grilled meats, pastas, fish. Nice selection - have never had a bad dish. I usually meet two girlfriends here for dinner and the wait staff are attentive yet not overwhelming. It is a comfortable spot for those "in the know". There's a small patio - maybe 8 tables, for outside seating on warm evenings. The only think I do not like about the Townhouse - is a recent experience. It is extremely difficult to reach the restaurant by phone. Three days in a row. This may be a new or temporary problem, but very annoying nonetheless.

    Waitperson was great. Food very good. So noisy inside we had to sit outside and it was a little cool for that.

    I have had lunch or dinner at the Townhouse Bar and Grill for about 20 years...maybe been to this restaurant 100 times. That says it all don't you think? The restaurant is a classic neighborhood restaurant... lots of electricity, terrific food, first rate, friendly service, wonderful bar scene, etc. The price is right, too. Fortunately there is valet parking at lunch because the neighborhood is very populated. Unfortunately, for dinner you may have to drive around a bit to find a space. All in all, an excellent restaurant experience.

    Food was enjoyable, good but not excellent. Lamb chops fatty. Service great but it took a long time to get our meal. Wouldn't want to wait that long next time.
