Last time we came there was 20 years ago. You would think the place gets some type of upgrade. Nope. The Tonga Room is located in the basement of a very expensive-looking-used-to-be-gorgeous hotel. Thr carpet and the seating on the main floor were outdated and nasty. But nothing compared to the basement where the restaurant was. That carpet hasn't been in cleaned in probably 80 years, since the Tonga Room opened. The whole entry way smelled like pot. There was absolutely no dress code. People came from working out. Seriously! The food was just ok, but too expensive for the amount given. Not many choices at all. Yet, the most disappointing thing was "the show". I KNOW that in the past the lights were almost turned off with a ton of rain and thunder while the lit up boat was coming to the middle yo perform and then going back for the break. And now just barely some rain and some noise in the background, attempting to perform the thunder. VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Service was AMAZING, our waitress Alex was very nice to us. If wasn’t for him I will leave the place immediately. Food is HORRIBLE!!! We order the coconut curry which has NO TASTE. The Pad Thai just imagine comes with Broccoli. It’s like going to Rain Forest Caffe for a triple of the price! The band music was amazing. Alcohol; No wine list, so imagine that it’s only beer and full of sugar alcoholic options. My recommendation on this place is: if you want something casual with live music and beer Hurricane Bar it’s OK. San Francisco is full of amazing restaurants and I don’t understand how Tonga Room cannot improve the quality of their food.

The menu is unusual and very limited. The noise level is far too loud. Overall, the prices are very high for food that was not good at all.

It was everything I’d expected- service was outstanding. Tenderloin was overcooked but other than that very flavorful.

Band was excellent. Fun kitschy experience. Lots of food, you can skip the appetizer and share an entree. Drinks were excellent and very strong. Really glad we went.

Food (appetizer) was cold, which is disappointing given that it was so expensive. Waiter accommodated with a replacement, which was also tepid and unappealing. Didn't bother ordering a main dish because the appetizer was disappointing. The drinks were expensive ($24 per cocktail), but were tasty and relatively strong. The vibe was good, but I would only go for a drink next time and skip the overpriced and inadequate food.

Great salmon poke. Plantain chips okay. Waiter did a good job overall. Ambiance and atmosphere was classic (have eaten there before). Security guard at entrance with “Stop here” as we were ambling up to check in as one might normally do in a restaurant was startling. Was told we had a two hour limit so we did not have time to buy another drink or dessert. Waiter kept calling my guest my name as I made the reservation (perhaps not use first name unless you know who is who.)

The food wasn't horrible but when you walked in it was very damp and musty. I expected it to be cleaner. This server was disinterested. I just expected it to be a different vibe. There were a bunch of 50-year-old men at the bar looking for a hookup. It was just a weird vibe. I could see if you were 20 and wicked drunk, It being a fun time. But other than that it just smells like a frat house and if you're over 25, it's probably not the situation for you.
