Situated in the heart of Somerset House WC2R, located off the Strand, Tom's Kitchen Somerset House Brasserie opened its doors on the 1st September 2010. In partnership with Compass Group UK & Ireland, Tom Aikens' new restaurant (replacing The Admiralty Restaurant) will feature the same familiar and comforting dishes as Tom's Kitchen Chelsea serving lunch (Mon-Fri)and dinner (Mon-Sat), and brunch on weekends and bank holidays only. Featuring everything from the best breakfast in London (as voted for by Time Out) and classic British fish and chips to one of Tom Aikens' more signature dishes, the 7 hour braised shoulder of lamb - all of which are long-standing favorites with locals and regulars.

A really disappointing experience for us. The atmosphere is cold and empty, this isn't helped by a number of lightbulbs in the restauerant being "out", leaving dark areas. Ordered the Mac 'n' Cheese starter with truffle, there was definitely no truffle. The mains were ok, but nothing your couldn't find in your local gastro pub. The wine list is also really poor, no diversity at all. All in all I would say don't waste your money.

Beautiful restaurant setting, quality food but little atmosphere that evening as so empty where we were seated.

Service was slow, the food was very average and generally the place relies heavily on being in Sometset House to have any atmosphere. The staff were inattentive and some (not all) were a little surly even. I was expecting the food to make up for it but some concern arose in me that quality here was questionable when the waiter insisted the burger my friend ordered as his original choice was unavailable must be well done. All in all this place did not impress which is a real shame given the picturesque location.

It is a warm April Friday evening and we have arrived early for our reservation. In fact the restaurant has not yet opened but we are welcomed by the bar staff and quickly served with much needed thirst quenchers. We don't have to wait long to be shown to our table. Sadly, mussels and rabbit are off but there is still plenty on the menu to tempt. There is delicious home baked bread still warm from the oven to nibble while we wait for our starter. Macaroni cheese, comfort food, arrived for my partner and a wonderful crab cake, crispy on the outside and meltingly creamy within, with a chilli kick, for me. The accompanying salad leaves were good too - a sensibly sized portion subtly dressed. Our mains were terrific. My partner's burger, cooked to taste, was huge but looked and tasted delicious. My shepherds pie came with delightfully cheesy potato atop tender and flavoursome minced lamb. The restaurant, in Somerset House, overlooks a terrace above the Thames. Views of the river are afforded by well placed mirrors and windows. There is cool air but neither fumes nor traffic noise from the Victoria Embankment below. Given its proximity on the North side to the noisy Strand, this is a surprising oasis of quiet. You are hardly aware that you are in the middle of one of London's busier areas. We will surely return for more.

I don't usually give bad reviews but the experience was particularly poor. My friend was left waiting at the bar while the entire time I was sitting at the table waiting, when we pointed this out there was an apology from the waiter (who had nothing to do with the issue) but no escalation to the manager/ actual responsible. We then ordered food and wine, the wine never came until we had our food, the waiter had to go see what had happened to it! No gesture was offered for any of this. Mostly it appeared as though none of the staff were experienced or knew what they were doing, they were not rude but totally clueless about hospitality. When we left we were shown the way out and it was the wrong way... a total disaster! Food was okey but overall experience quite poor

Even without a table actually overlooking the river, this restaurant still has a waterfront feel to it - and you can watch the tickertape at the National, so you could only be in London. it has a nice open feel about it. The food is good and tasty - could nitpic that the fish pie had slightly too much potato, and my brothers's belly pork not quite falling apart enough - but all well presented and overall very satisfying. great chips too! Would definately go again - especially with visitors as Somerset house is such a great building.

I like the relaxed atmosphere and friendly service - would actually go to Tom's Kitchen more often, if it was not for the limited choices on their menu . Of course this is due to their commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients, but right now I'm missing the excellent scallops starter and steak sandwich. On this occasion the Endive Salad and the Burger were as good as expected. Also can highly recommend the Goat Panna Cotta with cherries and sorbet - as well as the Espresso Martini.

We booked Tom's kitchen before going to the exhibition at Somerset House. Although a bit late we were welcomed and the service throughout was excellent. Food was well presented and tasty. Recommend the liver parfait. Comfortable and a pleasant ambience .

Restaurant looked good, but did not feel relaxing. Staff did not offer a childrens menu, this had to be requested. Our son picked the 'beef burger', when it came it was a cheese burger, which our son does not like. It was changed without issue, but it would have been better if it had stated this on the menu so we could have requested it without the cheese to start with. The roasted cod did not have a crispy skin. The 3 of us ordered, a childrens burger, roasted pork belly and roasted cod, the burger and the cod were served but my wife received no food. No explanation was given to my wife about the non appearance of her meal (pork belly), we left it a couple of minutes, my son and I decided to start our meal at which point the waitress said it would be a couple of minutes more for the pork. When the pork arrived it was tasty but it was overcooked (the bottom was very tough). On a positive note, we had the baked alaska for pudding (shared pud) which was nice and the warm bread served at the table was nice. Overall our feeling was that it seemed to promise much (looking at website, reviews and owner's name) but it just didn't quite deliver. Lovely setting for overpriced pub grub.

Very good experience, after theatre show . Plenty of variety, friendly staff and very good service. The choice of meals were excellent, with an assortment of good flavours and delightful presentation. The restaurant is smart, cosy, contemporary and a good venue for all occasions. Will definitely return and recommend to friends. Thank you all for a good experience, rounding off a good show - Beautiful The Carole King Story.
