We had a reservation for 845 but weren’t seated until 915. The food came out really, really slowly; shockingly, since there was only one other seating at our time. The oysters were amazing but that requires little skill or effort. Cocktails are great. The food is really overpriced and sub-par generally. It’s elevated comfort food with fancy menu-speak and local ingredients but the execution is marginal. The food looks pretty but tastes only ok except from the burger which is excellent. Server was awkward and made lame excuses about why the food took so long. The hostess was incredibly sweet, energetic and gracious. The atmosphere as always is super cozy and fun.

Everything we ate was amazing. The oysters are always fresh and excellent. The Fried Chicken and Navy Beans we’re both incredible. We’re already planning another date night to come back.

The hostess ruined my evening. Not only did she not acknowledge us directly, she sat the couple who entered the restaurant after us, before even acknowledging us. Then she sat us next to the only occupied table in the restaurant. Fortunately, they were a civilized couple as we were only inches from them. In my head, I pretended that all the empty booths were already reserved. Turns out that they weren't. Just a very bad front of house. The food was good. Just really hard to focus on the food after such a rough start.

We recently read the write-up in the Willamette Week and thought it would be fun to go to the Woodsman again. We hadn't been in years and remembered having delicious dinners there before. We were sorely disappointed. We had expected something similar to what we experienced before - fresh, delicious country/NW style country cooking. However, this place has changed! It is more like a local joint now. They have a comfort food theme and frankly the menu is quite limited. We liked the cauliflower steak appetizer well enough but it could have been cooked just a little longer. The crab rolls were simply crab salad in a white bread roll and the vegetable crudite was skimpy at best with a poor presentation. The ranch dressing accompanying the crudite was delicious (I later ordered a side for my roasted potatoes) but there was a lack of vegetable variety to make ordering this dish worthwhile. I got the trout which I had ordered and enjoyed previously at the Woodsmen years ago. It was slightly rare, which many people enjoy but was not to my liking, and it had so many small bones I could not even see them in the dim light to remove them in order to eat it. My husband got the burger and liked it well enough but reported it wasn't anything special. The fries and sauce that accompanied it were delicious and we all enjoyed them very much. My father-in-law seemed to enjoy the pork chop too but did comment on the presentation. It was sliced as if it were a pork loin roast or the like. My mother-in-law ordered the shrimp and crab louie and enjoyed it all except the bacon which she felt was too strong for the delicate flavors of the shrimp and crab. Desert pan brownie and pecan pie were good overall, although the pecan pie could have been heavier on the pecans and the brownie was a bit too sweet. Service was slow.
All-in-all, I would recommend the Woodsman only if you were prepared for a mediocre meal.
I myself will likely not be returning.

Another opportunity to Top Chef-stalk. Doug Adams is the chef now at Woodsman Tavern. His fried chicken, a winning dish of his, was phenomenal. Added to that, collard greens, beautifully prepared, and a buttery biscuit and wedge salad, and you are in for a treat of a meal. We had a few of their cocktails as well, for a enjoyable, well-rounded evening.

A great dinner with fantastic fried chicken and sides. My wife had the trout that was cooked to perfection. We shared a couple of side dishes, the mashed potatoes and gravy (just like mom made) and a squash dish that was really yummy. I also had hush puppies, which took me back to times spent in the south, they were that good. I highly recommend going for brunch and having one of the conditioned bloody marys.

We had great service from Michelle at the bar. She was friendly and attentive in spite of being the only bartender in a busy place. The food; both burger and trout were excellent and the cocktails yummy.

Wish we could have been seated in the non-TV section which was quieter. There were empty booths that were still empty when we left!

The bad: It was extremely noisy when the two of us walked in—several notches above “energetic.” We were seated at a two-top and literally could not hear each other talk. Service was very slow...we ordered a glass of red wine and saw it sitting on the bar only five feet away from us for 10 minutes (yes, we timed it) waiting to be served to us. They weren’t exactly packed, there were two empty booths in the room we were in.

The good: We really liked the looks of the place both inside and out, very cozy inside with all of the wood and nice decorations for the holiday. The noise died down A LITTLE while we were there. The food was very good. We had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and a biscuit, all delicious.

We will go back sometime, but will ask for a booth because of the noise. That way we can sit next to each other. Or we will sit at the bar. And hope the service has improved next time.

We were there with friends. We had a cozy booth away from the bar side. A game was on during happy hour, so that side was busy and a bit loud. The food was fantastic, everything was perfect! Great beer and wine selection too. Highly recommend!

Food was very good. Even the hushpuppies were excellent, and I usually hate (not just dislike) hushpuppies. Oysters were plump and tasty with only a little bit of grit, which can throw off my enjoyment of oysters quickly. The plating of the blackened catfish was a little disappointing in that I could hardly see the fish (dark restaurant, dark seat, dark plate, dark fish with lighter colored things atop), but it tasted quite good. I'd say the only real disappointment were the crab rolls. Partially because they were crab on a roll, rather than the expected crab cake like dish, but mainly because the crab, while good, was dry and didn't really incorporate the roll (if that makes sense). Drinks and desserts were excellent.

The food that we had was good. My issue with the menu since the new chef arrived is the variety. It leans pretty heavy and it would be nice to have a few things that aren't fried or coated in maple syrup or cheese.

I’m not sure why this place has the reputation that it does. Everyone in our party agreed that their meals were only so-so, the most compelling item was the seafood tower, but otherwise no one was that impresssed.

I've always been a huge fan of The Woodsman and now that Doug Adams is at the helm (even if it's just for a brief period of time) this is my favorite joint in PDX. Killer fried chicken and I loved the Dungeness crab salad and hushpuppies. We also had the whiskey flights and tried the spotlight cocktail which was smooth and delicious, just the right amount of sweet.

Food was great. Servers were friendly and helpful with menu suggestions. The music was spot on. I had the seasonal drink and it was really good! The only downside was the draft every time the front door opened - it was cold! and the server forgot to bring us a beer that we ordered. Otherwise, we liked this place too much, we will be back!

We have 2 kids who love to eat (they even have a blog and had their birthday dinner at Nodoguro) They never order off the child’s menu. They are very well behaved. We did not appreciate the eye roll from the hostess when we came in with two 9 year olds. But after that the service was awesome and the boys had a blast! They can’t wait to go back!

The Woodsman is a great option for anyone who doesn't want to stand on a line waiting for brunch. Brunch options were more than sufficient for all of the different diets and tastes at our table, and ranged from the classic "Eggs, bacon and toast" to Shrimp and grits or fried chicken. All of the food was well prepared, and we even got to take home leftovers, which made for a great breakfast the following day!

Wonderful tavern ambience, with the typical PDX high noise level. Restaurant designers don't seem to be very interested in acoustics.

It takes a while for things to happen. I'd describe the service as attentive, yet leisurely. The double burger was good, but why not include a single-patty option on the menu?

The french fries were amazing. Crispy on the outside, soft and pillowy on the inside, like they used to be before frying in animal fat became the cause of certain death of Western civilization.

A little overpriced, pretty noisy, leisurely service, decent food. Sounds like a perfect hipster hideaway, but not someplace I'll frequent.

The food at Woodsman truly is good. Our experience tonight just lets us know that good food in a foodie city like Portland just isn’t enough.
Despite arriving just prior to our reservation time, we were given the worst table in the house. You all which one this could be.
I requested to the hostess multiple other options which would have been preferred for my birthday dinner with my wife. I was told I could wait 45 minutes while at least 8 tables were open and most remained open for over an hour. Yes, they remained vacant nearly the whole time.
Bottom line, good food or not, a bad hostess ruined the experience and we’ll never go back. Ever. Don’t recommend it to anyone.
