The room is magnificent and grand. The food is good the service is OK. Come for the rich history and grand dining room!
Memories of the Walnut Room have changed. The venue now is extremely dull and lifeless.
Super service! Made my day extra special!
My server, Stephanie, was charming and highly efficient. I have not eaten at The Walnut Room in a while and was more than pleasantly surprised at the updated menu and how wonderful the food tasted. Looking forward to returning again soon.
The Walnut Room on holidays and Sundays is a must go. But I can never understand why more people don’t go there for regular dining. The food is very good, the wait staff friendly and efficient, and you can actually converse with others at your table without shouting. And the view’s not bad either!
Our waiter, Miguel, was very personable, professional, and knowledgeable of the menu.
Superb as always. I love the Walnut Roo--espeially the wonderful salads. Yesterday I had a great clam chowder there.
I brought my 10-year old great niece to lunch since she enjoys the Walnut Room. However, I did not realize they were only serving Brunch. Although she was originally disappointed, she decided to give it a chance, and was glad she did. She ate everything and was clapping during the live music performance. She thoroughly enjoyed herself, as did I! We will be back!
We went on a Sunday where they only do the brunch buffet. This was our first time in Chicago and I was recommend this place from a friend who lives here. There was a variety of food at the buffet (breakfast and non-breakfast) and it was all very good! Also, nice quiet live jazz trio.
Risotto was under-cooked but otherwise very good.
The Walnut Room is a classic. As child I came here with my mother in the 50’s and 60’s. Went on my own in the 70’s and 80’s but haven’t been back until now. I took my daughter and granddaughter before a show at the Chicago Theater. Loved that it is consistently the same but new items with a modern twist. Everything was delicious and well prepared. It was a grand building. Sad to see the deterioration of Macy’s.
The food is consistently delicious and iris a beautiful , quiet dining room off season ( not between Thanksgiving and New Years)
We love the Walnut Room and always come here to celebrate special occasions. The food and the view of the city are great.
To mark the 100th birthday of my wife's Mom, our family celebrated with lunch at one of her favorite downtown restaurants. Long considered a Chicago institution, The Walnut Room did not disappoint! Although not every table was filled with diners on this mid-winter weekday, our server was charming and attentive. His recommendations were spot-on, and he frequently inquired whether we needed more wine, water, or a dessert list. The Walnut Room classics, chicken pot pie and meatloaf, were excellent. Ditto for the side dishes, mashed potatoes, etc. And with an unobstructed view of the historic Chicago skyline from our table, our meal was all that we could hope for. Yes, we'll be back!
We waited 15 min for the hostess to check us in, was not at her station. Then waited another 20 min for waiter to come, he never did. Bartender cane as we were about to leave and he took care of us because waiter was too busy. Aside from the kind bartender worst experience ever anywhere.
For me, a trip back in history. For my friend, a new experience. We both enjoyed the setting, the service and the food. Today's hit, the ever popular and extremely tasty Mrs. Hering's Chicken Pot Pie. The very hot creamy filling under the crisp crust arrived just ready to eat and savor. On the plate was a fresh pile of crisp greens, perfectly dressed, and a nice balance with the pot pie. Ended this treat of a meal by sharing a slice of Frango Mint Ice Cream Pie. OH. MY. The meal took me back to my childhood. I have been enjoying The Walnut Room for, I cannot believe I'm going to say this, over 70 years. That it is still delish is a wonder and a pleasure. The room remains a lovely setting. A small and welcome bonus is that my soft drink was refilled at no extra charge. The wait staff was excellent. There were regular check-ins that did not interfere with our enjoyment, only added to it. Thanks that this restaurant has not been allowed to diminish over time.
This place is fabulous! The walnut room is of great historic value and is absolutely gorgeous. The staff is friendly, accommodating and on top of every detail. The prices are actually cheap for a high end delicious lunch in downtown Chicago. I will definitely be back. 5 stars all around!
I had a cheeseburger with fruit side, and it was very good. The ambiance is lovely. It is a beautiful room.
But I was there a week or so before and chose the cod which was quite overbaked by bread crumbs - had to kind of peel them off to enjoy the fish. Nice combo otherwise of coleslaw etc
The Walnut Room Salad was very delish! The Asiago Chicken was authentic German snitzel Cuisine and pared well with a Riesling wine.
I’m going back😋
Brunch was delicious! Everything was tasty, great variety, nice complimentary Mimosa (that was not too strong, as I requested). The staff were helpful, polite, personable, attentive. I love the room and its views. There was a trio providing lovely music - pretty vocals, not too loud, just great background. The only challenge the Walnut Room faces is the sound system from the rest of the store, can still be heard in the background when the performers were playing. The music piped in for shoppers cannot be silenced in the Walnut Room. The staff were awesome in trying, but it is a whole-house issue. Despite that, it was a lovely brunch!!!
An elegant place to experience a wide variety of dishes. Three of us ordered all different items, and all were delicious. Service is impeccable.
Nostalgic experience for is as we used to go there as little children in the 50’s. Food was great, but it’s a little sad to see that it lost its former splendor.
beautiful, historic setting and delicious food. Also quiet.
Wonderful Brunch Buffet on Sunday. Great place to visit before Broadway show!!!!
We went for Sunday Brunch. Genevieve was a wonderful server. Food was great. We will return!
Brunch on Sundays never disappoints. Good selection of food and always warm and fresh. Our servers have been fantastic even when they are very busy.
It is sad to see the once elegant Walnut Room continue to deteriorate to a dining room with worn carpets, scraped and scarred wood paneled walls, and a state of general disrepair. Macy's ownership has not been kind. That being said the bar area, chandeliers and fountain still impress. The menu is excellent; a very good value for the money! Everything was served with a smile and a helpful attitude. They really tried to impart a spirit of the great service that was part of the Marshall Fields' tradition. We were not rushed out, so we could really visit. We ordered the chicken pot pie, meat loaf and a entree salad. All were delicious. Warm chocolate bread pudding to die for. The noise level of the room allowed us to carry on a decent conversation because we sat near the windows. Unfortunately due to the construction on the 8th and 9th floors in the rest of the area construction noise could be a problem.
Go to the Walnut Room before it disappears, have a drink and meal in memory of the late great Marshall Fields Department Store.
The food was delicious the service was great. Staff was friendly but not too friendly.
And the ambience was just lovely.
We sat near one of the huge windows and looked out over the city. I would definitely recommend the Walnut Room to a friend.
As a matter of fact,
I already have. 😊
I took my daughter there for a very memorable experience as I can went there as a child. The hostess was not at the host stand and finally showed up after 5 minutes. She seemed very dishevelled and not dressed appropriately for the job. She brought me to a table where my daughter and I waited 18 minutes. Nobody came to serve us. I flagged down the hostess again and asked for a server. We waited another 10 minutes. In that 30 minute time I told my daughter the importance of the restaurant to me and was very excited that she and I could have dinner here. I was very disappointed to have to leave as a result of no service. The waiters seemed to be disheveled also and running around. I flagged several and they ignored me. One particular woman behind me ran and back-and-forth and apologize profusely for the food not coming out on time to the next table. I tried to flag her down also and she said she "was busy".
Waiting 35 minutes is unacceptable. Lack of busboys and staff is unacceptable. I have been here 4 times in the past 4 years and same experience EVERY time. Lack of management in the restaurant, unkempt tables, no service, and just complete waste of my time. Very sad for what this restaurant was and what it is now are disturbing. Will not return ever again. Went to Latincity instead.
We walked into the Walnut Room and were met by a very welcoming hostess. She accommodated our request for a window seat and the view was fantastic. The decor warm, rich and clean. Our server was attentive, relaxed and very pleasant. The water was quickly refilled, and ordered drinks timely. Our food arrived with little wait. The soup and quiche flavorful, warm and appropriately seasoned. The BLT avocado had crispy bacon, ripe tomatoes, fresh sliced avocado and perfectly toasted bread. The buttermilk chicken salad, was crisp, right amount of dressing and the chicken cooked perfectly. We had a wonderful experience and a chance to walk down memory lane at the Walnut Room. I highly recommend it.
Wonderful food & excellent service!! Not many there when we first arrived so noise level was null.
It was a very good experience for all 21 students and faculty.
